You can make a clean, paint-ready bathroom cabinet door from a plywood panel and applied trim without a router, jointer, or other specialist cabinetmaking machine. The method behind Kristi Linauer’s Bathroom Makeover Day 3 tutorial still uses a circular saw, a miter saw, a brad nailer, glue, and nails. “Without special tools” means ordinary workshop equipment, not a hand-tool-only build.

The result is a flat plywood front whose face and edges are covered with trim. It is a practical approach for a painted vanity, provided you measure the existing cabinet and verify the hinges before cutting anything.

The tutorial was first published January 23, 2013 and updated February 14, 2025. Its promise is narrower than the headline can sound: you do not need a router, jointer, or dedicated cabinetmaking setup, but you do need powered saws and a nailer.

- Circular saw: cuts the plywood panel.
- Miter saw: cuts the face and edge trim and makes the corner miters.
- Brad nailer: drives the short brads that hold the face trim while the glue cures.
- Glue and nails: wood glue and 3/4-inch brads secure the face trim; 3/4-inch finishing nails secure the small edge trim.
- Preparation supplies: filler and sandpaper are used to hide nail holes and small gaps before painting.
A straightedge guide for a circular saw can make long, accurate panel cuts easier. It is an accessory for the saw, not a substitute for the saw itself.
Why the original project made new fronts
Linauer was remodeling a bathroom vanity whose existing doors and drawer fronts were 3/4 inch thick. Their beveled edges acted as pulls. Adding decorative trim directly to those pieces would have made the fronts too thick, so she chose to build new fronts instead. That decision is important: the applied-trim method is not automatically a way to refurbish every existing door. If your current fronts already fit correctly and have enough flat area, adding trim may be possible; if trim would interfere with hinges, drawer clearances, or the front’s thickness, new panels are the safer starting point.
The applied-trim plywood method, step by step
-
Establish the finished size
Decide the finished width and height from the cabinet opening, the existing door, or the layout you are replacing. The tutorial’s panel is intentionally smaller than the finished front so the trim can bring it to the target size. For a door intended to finish at about 19 3/4 by 19 3/4 inches, the plywood was cut to 19 1/2 by 19 1/2 inches. The quarter-inch reduction is the author’s example, not a universal overlay or inset rule; your cabinet and trim profile determine the correct allowance.

Cut the plywood core
Use 1/2-inch plywood for the core and cut it to the calculated panel dimensions with a circular saw. Support the sheet so the cut does not pinch the blade, and use a straightedge guide if you need a reliable reference for a long cut. Check the panel for square before moving on. A panel that is out of square will make the trim appear to have uneven widths even when the trim pieces are cut accurately.

Cut and attach the face trim
Cut the cabinet trim to run around the front face of the plywood. Dry-fit the pieces first so you can see how the profile meets at each corner. Apply wood glue, position the trim flush with the intended finished edges, and pin it with 3/4-inch brads from a brad nailer. The brads act as clamps while the adhesive sets; place them where later filler and paint can hide them.
-
Cover the exposed plywood edge
The plywood edge remains visible where the face trim meets it. Add a small edge-trim strip around that perimeter, mitering the corners so the pieces meet cleanly. Glue the strip and attach it with 3/4-inch finishing nails. This second trim layer is what conceals the plywood edge rather than leaving the layered sheet exposed from the side.
-
Fill and sand
After the adhesive has set, fill the nail holes and any small gaps at the miters. Sand the repairs and the transition between plywood and trim until the front feels continuous to the touch. The 2025 update reports that the fronts were completed but still unpainted, so the tutorial does not establish a tested primer, paint, or topcoat system.

Fit the hardware only after the front is sized
Choose pulls for doors and drawers according to your layout and preference. The tutorial identifies pulls as the hardware choice but does not establish a universal handle position. Hinges are a separate fit decision and should be transferred from the existing door or selected to operate in the same manner before you drill.

Measure a replacement door before cutting
If you are replacing an existing door or drawer front rather than designing a new overlay, use the cabinet as your reference. Lowe’s replacement-door guide recommends recording the dimensions of the existing door and drawer panels, the spacing between adjacent assemblies, and the distance from the cabinet edges. Those measurements help you reproduce the current fit instead of assuming that a nominal opening size will work.
Decide whether the existing hinges are serviceable. If they are damaged, choose replacements that operate in the same manner as the originals. Small differences in hinge geometry can change how far a door sits from the cabinet and how it swings. European-style concealed hinges require additional care: the position of the cup hole affects how much width remains for the door stiles.
There is no single overlay or inset allowance established by these sources. Measure your actual cabinet, account for the trim you intend to add, and verify the hinge location before committing to the plywood cut.
What the retailer’s alternate build does differently
Lowe’s describes a distinct replacement-door process using 1/2-inch MDF cut on a table saw, with stiles and rails added afterward. That guide drills a hinge cup hole, typically 35 millimeters wide, with a Forstner bit; it transfers the existing hinge locations, matches the hole depth to the hinge cup, and uses a self-centering bit for pilot holes. Those steps are useful when you are reproducing concealed-hinge hardware, but they are not part of the circular-saw, miter-saw, and brad-nailer method described in the bathroom makeover tutorial.

Common-tool alternatives and what changes
Two other tutorials show that “no special tools” can describe more than one construction strategy. They are alternatives, not interchangeable instructions for the applied-trim door.
| Method | Appearance | Materials and joinery | Tools named by the source | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Applied-trim plywood | Flat plywood face with a raised applied border and covered edges | Plywood, cabinet trim, edge trim, glue, brads, and finishing nails | Circular saw, miter saw, and brad nailer | The panel is cut below the target finished size so the trim establishes the final dimensions. |
| Beadboard frame | Beadboard center with poplar rails and stiles, often finished with cove molding | Beadboard, poplar, glue, pocket screws, and brad or pin nails | Miter saw, drill, pocket-hole jig, and a saw for the panel; circular-saw guides such as a Rip-Cut or Accu-Cut are mentioned as options | The author says a router table and table saw are not required, but the frame uses different joinery and has a different texture. |
| Frame-and-panel plan | Framed plywood-panel look | 1/2-inch hardwood plywood and a 1×3 frame joined with pocket holes | Pocket-hole setup and saws capable of making precise, square cuts | The approach is presented as especially suitable for paint-grade work or situations where the back is hidden. |
The beadboard option is described in Saws on Skates’ cabinet-door tutorial. The pocket-hole frame approach appears in Ana White’s Easy Frame and Panel Doors plan. Their material choices, joinery, and appearance should not be used to infer that the applied-trim method has the same strength or visual result.

The applied trim creates several transitions that will be visible under paint: the plywood-to-trim seam, the miter joints, and every nail hole. Spend preparation time where the eye will land. Press filler into the brad holes and small corner gaps, let it harden, and sand until the surface is level. Check the edge in raking light; a side light reveals ridges that are easy to miss when looking straight at the face.

Fit and finishing checks before installation
- Confirm the finished envelope: Lay the trimmed front over the cabinet opening and check the intended gaps before drilling hinge holes or attaching pulls.
- Check thickness at every edge: The reason for building new fronts in the original project was that adding trim to 3/4-inch fronts would have made them too thick. Make sure your trim does not interfere with neighboring doors, drawers, or the cabinet face.
- Inspect corner miters: Small openings can be filled, but a large mismatch usually indicates that a piece was cut to the wrong reference or that the panel is not square.
- Keep nail heads below the surface: A proud brad or finishing nail will remain visible after paint and can catch sanding paper.
- Transfer hinge locations carefully: Use the existing door as the drilling reference when reusing hardware. Match the hinge’s operating direction and verify the cup position before removing material.
- Test one front first: Install a single door or drawer front and open it through its full travel. This catches an overlay, thickness, or hinge-position error before you repeat it across the vanity.
Troubleshooting the most likely problems
The finished front is too large
Do not assume the trim can simply be sanded away. First identify whether the plywood panel was cut to the wrong target, whether the trim profile adds more width than expected, or whether you measured the cabinet opening instead of the existing front. Recalculate the finished dimensions from the actual cabinet and make a new panel when removing material would destroy the trim proportions.
The plywood edge still shows
Check the edge trim from the side and at each corner. A narrow exposed line means the strip did not cover the full edge or the face trim was positioned inconsistently. Refit the edge piece, miter the corner again if necessary, and fill the remaining seam before sanding.
Miter joints open after nailing
An open miter can result from an inaccurate angle, a piece referenced from the wrong end, or a panel that is not square. Dry-fit all four pieces around the panel before applying glue. If the gap is minor, filler and sanding can hide it; if the trim is visibly out of alignment, recut the affected piece rather than relying on filler alone.
The door rubs or sits incorrectly
Recheck the recorded door dimensions, the spacing from cabinet edges, and the hinge type. A concealed hinge’s cup position and the hinge’s geometry both affect the door’s final position. Transfer the original locations and use the hinge manufacturer’s dimensions for drilling; the reviewed sources do not support a universal hinge offset.
The surface looks uneven after sanding
Unevenness usually appears at the plywood-to-trim transition or where filler was spread beyond the hole. Sand the repair flush without rounding the trim profile, then inspect under side lighting. A smooth transition matters more than removing every visible grain variation from the plywood, because the coating system will determine the final sheen.
A practical supply checklist
- 1/2-inch plywood for the panel
- Cabinet trim and small edge trim
- Wood glue
- 3/4-inch brads and a brad nailer
- 3/4-inch finishing nails
- Circular saw and, if useful, a straightedge guide for it
- Miter saw
- Filler and sandpaper
- Compatible hinges or the existing hinges in usable condition
- Pulls for doors and drawers, selected after the front layout is confirmed
Which approach fits your vanity?
Choose the applied-trim plywood method when you want a flat, paintable front and already have access to a circular saw, miter saw, and brad nailer. Choose the beadboard frame when the beadboard texture and poplar frame are the design objective and you are comfortable with pocket-hole joinery. Choose the frame-and-panel plan when a framed plywood panel and hidden-back, paint-grade construction suit the cabinet. Whichever route you take, treat the existing cabinet and hinges—not a generic dimension—as the final authority for fit.
