The IKEA BILLY built-in hack turns separate bookcases into a wall-to-wall installation by fitting the cases carefully, securing them to the wall, then hiding seams and uneven gaps with baseboard, filler strips, moulding and, when desired, paint. The bookcases provide the storage core; the professional-looking result comes from accurate measuring, safe anchoring and trim fitted to the actual room.

There is no universal cut list for this project. Wall width, ceiling height, baseboards, outlets, floor variation and the exact BILLY configuration determine how many cases fit and how wide each filler must be. Plan around the units you will actually buy, not a generic room diagram.

Understand what makes a BILLY look built in

A freestanding BILLY has visible sides, seams between cases and a gap where the top meets the ceiling. A built-in installation changes that visual language. Multiple cases are aligned and joined, the side gaps are closed with filler, the bottom is integrated with a plinth or existing baseboard, and a top cornice or coving bridges the cases and the room. Front moulding can cover the vertical joints or create a more furniture-like face frame.

IRONCK Bookshelves and Bookcases Floor Standing 6 Tier Display Storage Shelves 70in Tall Bookcase Home Decor Furniture for Home Office, Living Room, Bed Room
  • Sturdy Material --- Built with durable MDF particleboard, each shelf can hold 22 lb to keep your books in safe hands
  • Stable Construction --- With strengthen screws and the tipover resistance device, the bookcase is more stable
  • Chic Rustic Design --- A 6-tier bookcase standing at 23.82"W* 9.25"D * 70.87"H, with the clean lines, is ideal for almost any space in your home
  • Clear Instruction --- With clear instructions and labeled parts, you’ll set it up in no time to pore over the pages for hours on end
  • Large Storage Space --- This bookshelf unit provides storage space for books, photographs, or decorative boxes

The underlying bookcase remains a manufactured cabinet. Trim does not increase the unit’s rated capacity, correct an unstable installation or make a wall perfectly square. Treat the project as furniture installation followed by finish carpentry, not as a structural wall alteration.

Choose the exact BILLY configuration before measuring the layout

Standard white BILLY

IKEA’s cited U.S. white BILLY listing measures 15 3/4 inches wide, 11 inches deep and 79 1/2 inches high. Use the dimensions for the current listing in your market when calculating the number of cases. Product revisions and regional assortments can differ, so measure the cartons or assembled product if a tight fit matters.

BILLY with a height extension

A separate white combination listed by IKEA, including a height extension, measures 47 1/4 inches wide, 11 inches deep and 93 1/4 inches high. That is a particular combination, not a universal dimension for every BILLY arrangement. Confirm the width, height and extension parts for the exact configuration you intend to purchase.

White BILLY combination with height extension 47 1/4 in 11 in 93 1/4 in 31 lb maximum shelf load for this cited combination

The 31-pound maximum belongs to the cited height-extension combination. Do not transfer it to standard shelves, another width, another market or a later product revision. Check the current local listing and assembly manual for the model in hand.

Check the wall before committing to a tall layout

  • Measure the wall at the floor, at shelf height and near the ceiling. Walls and floors can taper or bow.
  • Record ceiling height, crown moulding, existing baseboards, heating registers, outlets, switches and door or window casings.
  • Allow the clearance needed to assemble the cases and reach the wall-attachment points. IKEA specifically requires enough space above the furniture to anchor it to the wall.
  • Decide whether the cases will stop below the ceiling or use extensions. A tall configuration that cannot be tipped, positioned or anchored safely is the wrong configuration, even if its finished height looks ideal.

Plan the finished width and the gaps

Draw the wall to scale using the actual case width. Add the widths of all bookcases, then reserve space for a filler at each wall end and at any unavoidable obstruction. Do not assume the remaining space will divide evenly. A narrow scribe strip on one side may be less noticeable than two tiny strips, or you may choose a centered layout with equal fillers.

Mark the location of every baseboard and note its thickness. You can remove a section of baseboard behind the cases, notch the case-side filler, or build the installation forward so the existing trim remains. Each choice changes the finished depth and the way the side moulding returns to the wall.

Use a level to identify the highest point of the floor and the most prominent wall bulge. If the floor is out of level, level the base or plinth first; otherwise the top line will magnify the error across the whole wall. If the wall is out of plumb, leave a deliberate scribe gap for a filler rather than forcing the bookcases against it.

Tools and materials

Gather materials only after the layout is known. Quantities and dimensions depend on the gaps you measure after positioning the cases.

  • BILLY cases and, if selected, matching height-extension parts.
  • Tape measure, pencil, long level and a straightedge.
  • Drill/driver and bits appropriate to the supplied fasteners and your wall.
  • Shims or a leveling base, if the floor requires correction.
  • Filler strips or panels for wall-side and ceiling-side gaps.
  • Baseboard or plinth material, plus crown, coving or cornice trim for the top.
  • Wood or MDF moulding for visible front edges and vertical seams.
  • Mitre box and saw for the documented hand-cut trim method; a power saw is optional, not mandatory.
  • Clamps, screws or joining hardware suitable for the case construction, used according to the product instructions.
  • Primer and paint only if you are changing the finish, along with caulk, filler and sanding supplies for the chosen surfaces.

Wall fasteners are not universal. Stud spacing, masonry, plasterboard, concrete and the condition of the wall determine the appropriate anchor. Use the current IKEA assembly instructions for your product and select fasteners for the actual substrate; if the wall cannot reliably support the attachment, stop and obtain qualified advice.

Install the built-in safely, step by step

1. Assemble and inspect every case

  1. Assemble each BILLY exactly as its manual specifies. Check that shelves, back panels and hardware are seated correctly.
  2. Inspect for shipping damage, twisted sides or a bowed back before bringing the cases into the final layout.
  3. Keep the wall-attachment hardware and instructions with the corresponding unit. Do not substitute a generic attachment method without considering the model and wall.

2. Establish a level, repeatable base

  1. Mark the finished front line on the floor and wall.
  2. Use a level to find the high point of the floor.
  3. Install a level plinth or use appropriate shims beneath the cases. Support must be continuous and stable; do not leave a loaded case balanced on a few loose wedges.
  4. Recheck the level from end to end before setting the first bookcase.

3. Dry-fit the entire run

  1. Place the cases in their intended order without final trim.
  2. Check the total width, side gaps, outlet access, door swings and the clearance required above the cases for wall attachment.
  3. Use temporary spacers to keep the planned reveals consistent. Measure every gap; walls rarely produce identical openings.
  4. Confirm that shelves and doors, if any, can be removed later for maintenance.

4. Align and join adjacent cases

  1. Bring adjoining fronts into the same plane and clamp or hold them while checking the vertical edges.
  2. Join cases only where the product construction and instructions permit. Keep screw heads clear of shelf tracks and other hardware.
  3. Check level and plumb again after each connection. A small error at the first case can become a large error at the last.

5. Anchor the run to the wall

  1. With the cases in their final position, locate suitable wall structure or approved anchors.
  2. Leave enough overhead access to install the attachment as IKEA directs; a case pushed tight to the ceiling before anchoring may be impossible to secure correctly.
  3. Attach every unit or the assembled run as required by the current manual. The attachment prevents tipping; it is not optional trim hardware.
  4. Test for movement before loading shelves. If the wall surface crumbles, the fastener spins or the case rocks, correct the installation before proceeding.

6. Fit wall-side fillers

  1. Measure the gap at several heights because a wall may not be straight.
  2. Transfer the largest required dimension to the filler, then scribe or plane the edge to follow the wall.
  3. Fasten the filler to the case framing or a separate support cleat without blocking shelf adjustment or the wall attachment.
  4. Leave a small caulkable joint where the filler meets the wall rather than forcing a brittle, perfectly tight cut.

7. Add the base and top treatment

  1. Install the plinth or baseboard so it runs continuously across the installation. Return or terminate it neatly at the side walls.
  2. Measure the actual ceiling gap after the cases are level and anchored.
  3. Install coving, crown or another top moulding to bridge that gap. A documented makeover used top coving; its dimensions should not be copied without measuring your room.
  4. Use a mitre box and saw if you are following a hand-cut trim route. Dry-fit every joint before applying adhesive or fasteners.

8. Cover front seams and finish the edges

  1. Decide whether the vertical joints should disappear or remain as intentional reveals.
  2. Cut front moulding to cover exposed edges and transitions, allowing for the actual case spacing.
  3. Check that trim sits flush. The documented makeover reported difficulty achieving a perfectly flush fit, so expect to adjust, shim or scribe rather than assuming the first cut will work.
  4. Fill nail holes and small joints, sand only as appropriate for the material, then caulk paintable wall joints.

Choose between the original finish and paint

Keep the factory finish

Leaving the BILLY finish intact is the fastest route and avoids coating-compatibility questions. Match the trim as closely as possible, or use contrasting painted moulding as a deliberate design choice. The seams and fillers still need careful fitting because unpainted surfaces make uneven joints easy to see.

Paint the installation

A documented makeover primed the cases, joined them and then painted the installation. That sequence is an example, not a universal specification. Confirm that the primer adheres to the exact foil, laminate or painted surface on your cases, and follow the primer and paint manufacturer’s preparation and curing directions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Remove shelves and hardware that should not be coated.
  2. Clean and lightly prepare surfaces as directed for the material.
  3. Prime compatible surfaces, including new MDF or wood trim, with products suited to each substrate.
  4. Sand or de-nib only when the product instructions call for it, then remove dust.
  5. Apply thin, even finish coats and respect recoat and cure times before replacing books.

Painting before installation can make individual parts easier to handle, but joining and trimming afterward may expose unpainted edges. Painting after the cases are installed gives a unified color but requires careful masking and ventilation. Choose the sequence that matches your room, finish and ability to protect floors and walls.

Common problems and practical fixes

Symptom Likely cause Fix
The top trim waves across the wall Cases were installed out of level or the ceiling is uneven Correct the base level first, then scribe the trim to the ceiling rather than forcing a straight piece against it.
A side filler is tight at one end and wide at the other The wall is not square or plumb Measure at multiple heights and scribe the wall edge; use a caulkable joint at the wall.
Cases move when pushed Missing, unsuitable or loose wall attachment Unload the cases and install the specified attachment with fasteners appropriate to the substrate.
Adjacent fronts do not align Uneven floor, twisted case or inconsistent spacing Recheck the level base, inspect the case and reset the spacing before adding trim.
Paint scratches or remains tacky Incompatible preparation, heavy coats or insufficient cure time Follow the coating system’s surface-preparation and curing requirements; do not reload shelves prematurely.
Trim will not sit flush Case edges, fillers or moulding are not on the same plane Shim, scribe or adjust the substrate before fastening the trim. A documented makeover encountered this issue, so plan for fitting work.

Before loading the shelves

  • Verify every required wall attachment is installed and tight.
  • Check that the entire run remains level, plumb and stable after trim is added.
  • Confirm that no filler, moulding or paint blocks shelf supports, ventilation openings or electrical access.
  • Respect the load limit published for your exact BILLY configuration; the cited 31-pound figure applies only to the specified height-extension combination.
  • Distribute heavy books rather than concentrating them on one shelf, and inspect the installation periodically for movement or loosening.

Is the BILLY hack right for your wall?

This approach makes sense when you want modular storage and are comfortable doing finish carpentry around manufactured cases. It is especially practical when the wall width can be divided into the available unit widths and when you can provide safe anchoring clearance. It is less suitable when the ceiling is too low to assemble or anchor the chosen height, the wall cannot accept a reliable attachment, or the room requires a custom depth that 11-inch cases cannot provide.

The deciding work happens before the first cut: verify the current local dimensions, resolve the base and ceiling conditions, dry-fit the full run, and measure every gap after the cases are positioned. Once the cases are level, joined and anchored, trim and paint can make the installation read as one continuous built-in wall.
