Make a bold Frankenstein face with a broad forehead, heavy brow, squared eyes, a short flat nose, a stitched mouth and two side bolts. Keep the connecting strips of pumpkin thick so the design stays intact, and use a battery-operated LED light to show it off safely after dark.
Choose a design that will hold together
Use a medium-to-large pumpkin with a relatively flat front. Sketch the face or use a Frankenstein pumpkin stencil; a blocky outline with large features reads more clearly from the sidewalk than a design crowded with small details.
- Forehead and brow: Make the forehead broad and the brow heavy, but leave a sturdy strip between the brow and eyes.
- Eyes and nose: Use squared eyes and a short, flat nose. Keep the bridges between the eyes and nose wide enough not to break.
- Mouth and bolts: A straight or stitched-line mouth is easy to recognize. Keep the side bolts broad, and leave pumpkin connecting them to the face.
For a beginner-friendly face, cut the eyes and mouth all the way through. To add shading, scrape away the green-orange skin and a shallow layer of flesh without cutting through the pumpkin. Large openings create stronger shadows and are easier to see at night; fine stitches and narrow bridges take more care and are more fragile.

Gather the tools and prepare the pumpkin
- A pumpkin carving kit with a saw, poker and scoop. Disney advises using a pumpkin carving kit rather than kitchen knives: Disney pumpkin-carving instructions.
- A printed stencil or pencil/marker sketch, plus tape and a poker tool for transferring the design.
- A battery-operated LED tea light or pumpkin light.
- Optional toothpicks, in case a cut-out piece needs to be reattached.
- Wash and dry the pumpkin, then place it on a non-slip surface so it cannot roll while you work.
- Using the kit saw, cut around the stem to make a lid. Angle the saw slightly inward; this helps keep the lid from falling into the pumpkin.
- Lift out the lid and remove seeds and stringy pulp with the scoop.
- Scrape the inside of the pumpkin’s back wall smooth. Reynolds Brands says a smooth interior surface helps the light reflect more brightly: Reynolds Brands’ pumpkin-carving tips.
Transfer and carve the Frankenstein face
- Tape the stencil to the flattest part of the pumpkin. Disney suggests crumpling and smoothing the paper first so it conforms to the curved surface.
- Use the poker to prick through the stencil’s dotted lines, then remove the paper. Redraw any marks that are hard to see.
- Cut the smallest interior shapes first, followed by the larger openings. Work carefully and avoid pressing on areas you have already carved; Disney recommends this order to help prevent damage.
- As you cut the eyes, mouth and bolts, preserve the bridges that connect the features. If a piece comes loose accidentally, Disney suggests reattaching it with a toothpick pushed through the flesh side.
- Wipe away scraps, place a battery-operated LED light low and stable inside, then replace the lid.
Keep carving and display safe
Leave cutting and carving to adults. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says, “Leave pumpkin carving to the adults.” Children can draw the design, tape the stencil in place, scoop pulp and seeds, or help clean up. The American Academy of Pediatrics’ HealthyChildren guidance also recommends that adults handle carving and suggests a battery-operated flameless candle, flashlight or glow stick.
Choose a battery-operated LED tea light or pumpkin light rather than an exposed flame. Keep the finished pumpkin away from curtains, dry plants and costume fabric. If you use a candle, place it where visitors cannot brush against it, keep combustibles away and extinguish it before leaving the area or going to bed; never leave an open flame unattended.

The CPSC reported that 55% of the injuries discussed in its 2023 Halloween safety guidance were related to pumpkin carving. It also reported annual averages of 5,600 candle-associated fires and 1,600 electrical-cord/plug-associated fires for 2017–2019.
