You can carve a small hinged pair of novelty pliers from one piece of soft wood using a series of precise angled cuts. Make’s 2016 demonstration uses basswood and describes ten cuts; the finished hinge moves, but the wooden tool is not suitable for gripping or other real-world plier work.
What this carving makes—and what it does not
The project frees two arms from a single wooden blank while leaving them connected at a working hinge. David Warther demonstrates the technique in the video embedded in Make’s article. The hinge moves, but the result is a small novelty carving, not a functional substitute for metal pliers.
Choose the wood and blade
- Wood: Use a small piece of soft wood. The featured demonstration uses basswood, a suitable starting point to follow that example.
- Blade: Make reports Warther’s recommendation for a short, very sharp carving blade. A sharp edge and a manageable blade length help with controlled cuts; the article does not identify a specific retail knife.
Warther developed a special knife for carving these pliers, according to Make, but no model or specifications are given. Treat the short-blade advice as general guidance, not an endorsement of a particular tool.
How the ten-cut method works
Make describes the carving as ten precise, angled cuts. The cuts separate and shape the two arms while preserving the wood that forms their hinge. The sides to cut, angle, and depth all matter, and the article warns that keeping them straight can be confusing.

Use the visual demonstration in Make’s project video to follow the geometry. The accompanying text does not establish a complete cut-by-cut layout, dimensions, or sequence, so a written description alone is not enough to specify where every cut should go. Do not guess at the angles or depth.
Work carefully with the carving knife
This project involves sharp-tool work and precise cuts. Make notes the risk of cuts and the need for practice, but does not provide a complete safety procedure. Follow established woodcarving safety guidance, keep the work controlled, and avoid attempting cuts whose direction or depth you cannot clearly see in the demonstration.

Where the technique comes from
Make identifies the demonstrator, David Warther, as the son of Ernest “Mooney” Warther, a carver known for wooden pliers. The article attributes the origin story to David’s account: his father received an example from an itinerant man he met while traveling. That is an attributed family story, not independently established history.
Make also reports that the wooden pliers became Mooney Warther’s calling card and that the museum allegedly gives novelty pairs to visiting children. The article does not establish whether that practice continues today.

A different wooden-pliers method
An older woodworking excerpt describes a separate approach using soft, corky white pine and a pointed knife or small chisel. It is not the same as Warther’s ten-cut basswood demonstration, so its material and tool details should not be mixed into instructions for this project.
