For a beginner, a sound soapstone block is a practical choice for carving a small bowl by hand: it is relatively soft, and archaeological sources document bowls made from it. Shape the outside first, then hollow the center gradually with controlled scraping or chiseling. Work cautiously around chips and stone dust, and don’t treat the finished bowl as food-safe unless the exact stone and finish have been verified for food contact.
What stone is easiest to carve into a bowl?
Soapstone, also called steatite, is a talc-rich metamorphic rock that is relatively easy to carve. The North Carolina Office of State Archaeology describes it as easily carved into bowl form and documents its use for regional carved bowls (Blue Rock Soapstone Quarry). The Museum of Stone Tools gives soapstone a general hardness of about 2 on the Mohs scale; that is an attributed description, not a guarantee that every commercial block has the same hardness (Soapstone Bowl).
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Cracks or weak spots can make shaping and handling less predictable. There is no source-backed standard bowl template or set of dimensions here, so size the design to the block rather than assuming a particular wall thickness will work for every piece.

What tools do you need to carve soapstone?
For a small hand-carved bowl, consider hand chisels and scraping tools suited to the block’s hardness and the scale of the work. The National Park Service’s museum handbook describes point tools for roughing out and toothed chisels for further definition; it also distinguishes heavier tools used on hard igneous stone from tools appropriate to softer stone (NPS Museum Handbook, Appendix P). In a regional archaeological context, the North Carolina source notes smaller stone, antler, bone, or wood tools used to scrape bowls.
- For the outer profile: use a hand tool that removes material in controlled amounts rather than taking large, unpredictable bites.
- For the hollow: use a chisel or scraper that fits the opening and lets you work progressively.
- For finishing: have wet-sanding abrasives in a progression from coarser to finer grits.
Tool demands change with stone hardness. If your block is harder or behaves differently than expected, stop and reassess the tool and technique rather than forcing a tool through the material.

How do you hollow out a stone bowl?
Shape the exterior before hollowing the center. Working in that order gives you a defined outside form before you remove material from the opening, and gradual scraping or chiseling lets you monitor the remaining walls and base. Archaeological examples include scraping marks inside bowls, but this does not mean there was one universal historical method.
- Plan the form. Mark the outside profile and the intended opening on a sound block. Keep enough material for the bowl wall and a solid base; the block determines the workable dimensions.
- Rough-shape the outside. Remove material gradually to establish the bowl’s exterior. Keep hand tools directed away from your body and maintain a stable hold on the work.
- Open the center. Start the hollow within the marked opening, then remove material in controlled increments with a chisel or scraper appropriate to the stone.
- Check as you go. Pay attention to the remaining wall and base while hollowing. Avoid undercutting the base or making the walls so thin that the bowl becomes risky to handle.
- Refine and smooth. Once the form is established, use progressively finer abrasives with wet sanding to smooth the surface.
How do you manage stone chips and dust?
Chipping can send fragments toward your eyes, and airborne stone dust can be an inhalation hazard. The University of Chicago Environmental Health and Safety studio policy recommends safety goggles when chipping stone, warns about stone-dust hazards, and advises directing hand tools away from the body (Art Studio Safety Policy).

- Keep tools pointed away from your body and work in a stable position.
- Control dust so it does not accumulate or become airborne; follow the supplier’s safety information for the particular stone.
- Do not assume soapstone dust is harmless. Stone composition matters, and the cited policy does not establish a blanket safety claim for every soapstone.
How should you finish the bowl?
Wet sanding with abrasives that move from coarse to finer grits can smooth the carved surface. The practical instructions from Teacher’s Pet recommend allowing the piece to dry before optional oiling for appearance and surface protection (
Optional oiling is a surface treatment, not proof that a bowl is suitable for food contact. The cited instructions do not certify the stone or finish as food-safe, so do not use the bowl for serving or storing food unless reliable information establishes that the specific stone and finish are appropriate for that use.
