To center one layer on a Photoshop document, select the layer, select the entire canvas with Ctrl+A (Windows) or Command+A (macOS), press V for the Move tool, then click Horizontal Centers and/or Vertical Centers in the Options bar. Press Ctrl+D or Command+D when finished. Selecting the full canvas makes its edges the alignment reference instead of another layer or a smaller active selection.
The fastest way to center a layer on the canvas
- In the Layers panel, click the layer you want to move. Select the artwork layer itself, not a mask, group, or background by mistake.
- Press Ctrl+A on Windows or Command+A on macOS. Marching ants around the document indicate that the entire canvas is selected.
- Press V to activate the Move tool. Adobe places its alignment controls in the Move tool’s Options bar: Move tool documentation.
- Click Horizontal Centers to center the layer from left to right.
- Click Vertical Centers to center it from top to bottom.
- Press Ctrl+D (Windows) or Command+D (macOS) to deselect.
The layer’s center is aligned to the center of the selected canvas area. The layer can still extend beyond the canvas if it is larger than the document; that is expected.
Center a layer horizontally only
With the target layer selected and the full canvas selected, click Horizontal Centers. Photoshop moves the layer left or right until its horizontal center matches the horizontal midpoint of the canvas. Its vertical position is unchanged.

Center a layer vertically only
Use the same setup, then click Vertical Centers. The layer moves up or down until its vertical center matches the canvas midpoint. Its horizontal position is unchanged.

Center a layer in both directions
Click both center controls: Horizontal Centers and Vertical Centers. For a normal, unrotated layer, either order produces the same geometric result.
What the alignment controls mean
| Control | Effect |

Adobe documents these controls for aligning layers or groups to edges, centers, and a selection border: Align content of layers and groups. Labels and icon placement can vary by Photoshop version, workspace, and language.
Canvas, layers, groups, and artboards: what is the reference?

If you skip the full-canvas selection, Photoshop may use the bounds of selected layers or another current reference. For multiple layers, the menu route is Layer > Align, followed by Horizontal Centers or Vertical Centers.

Artboards have independent width, height, X, and Y properties and contain their own layers and groups. Confirm the intended artboard before aligning: Adobe’s artboard properties guide.
Center several layers without separating them
Group first
- Select the layers in the Layers panel.
- Choose Layer > Group Layers (or use the group icon).
- Select the new group.
- Press Ctrl/Command+A, press V, and click the two center controls.
This treats the group as one object. Uneven empty space inside the group can still affect its apparent center.
Select layers together
Select multiple layers and use Layer > Align when the goal is to put their center lines or edges together. This is different from centering the whole composition: individual layers may move relative to one another.

Center a text layer correctly
Moving a text layer with Horizontal Centers and Vertical Centers positions the text layer’s bounds on the canvas. It does not center the lines inside a paragraph box.
To center paragraph text within its container, select the text and choose the center paragraph-alignment control in the Paragraph panel. Paragraph formatting is a separate operation from layer positioning: Adobe’s paragraph-formatting guide. Point text and paragraph text can behave differently; point text can be converted through Type > Convert to Paragraph Text.
Why a mathematically centered layer can look off-center
Transparent padding
Photoshop centers the layer’s bounds, which may include transparent pixels surrounding a logo, cutout, or exported image. Trim unnecessary transparency with Layer > Trim when appropriate, or place the visible artwork in a tighter layer or group. Check the bounds before removing margins that are intentional.

Optical balance
Irregular shapes, faces, shadows, and letters can look better with a small optical adjustment after geometric centering. Use guides as a visual check rather than assuming the software can judge optical balance.
Rotation, transforms, and Smart Objects
Rotated, skewed, or perspective-transformed content is aligned by its transformed bounds or center, not by an optical reading of the shape. Center first when possible, then transform and recheck. A Smart Object is positioned as one layer, but internal whitespace can still shift its apparent center.

Troubleshooting
The alignment buttons are missing
- Press V and look in the Move tool’s Options bar, not the Layers panel.
- Make sure the Options bar is visible through Window > Options.
- Interface labels can differ between releases and localizations; older tutorials may show wording such as Align Layers to Selection.
The wrong object moves
- Click the intended layer directly in the Layers panel.
- Do not click artwork on the canvas to choose the target when Move tool auto-select is enabled.
- Lock or hide distracting layers only if they are interfering with selection.
The layer aligns to a small area
- Press Ctrl/Command+D to remove the active selection.
- Press Ctrl/Command+A to select the entire canvas.
- Apply the center commands again, then deselect.
The layer is locked
Select the layer you intend to move. A locked background does not need to be unlocked when you are centering another layer. Unlock the target only if Photoshop prevents that target from moving.

There are multiple artboards
Identify the target artboard and its contents first. A document-wide selection or another selected object can produce a result that looks centered in the wrong area.
Manual centering with guides
Use guides when you need an optical adjustment or when automatic alignment is unavailable:
- Turn on rulers with View > Rulers.
- Drag a vertical guide to the canvas midpoint and a horizontal guide to the midpoint.
- With the Move tool active, move the layer until its visual center meets the guide intersection.
Guides are non-printing layout aids and can be moved with the Move tool. Photoshop also lets you edit a selected guide numerically through View > Guides > Edit Selected Guides: Move and edit guides. Manual dragging is more vulnerable to zoom, snapping settings, transparency, and visual judgment than the full-canvas alignment method.

Align versus distribute
Align places edges or centers on a common reference. Distribute spaces three or more layers or groups evenly; it is not a one-layer centering command. Adobe’s distribution controls are described here: Distribute layers and groups evenly.
