To chain-piece an entire quilt block, sew its cut pieces together row by row, feeding each new pair under the presser foot without clipping the connecting thread between pairs. Once the rows are complete, join them in order, matching the seam intersections. This machine-sewing workflow is useful for grid-based blocks with pieces arranged in horizontal rows.

Arrange the cut pieces for one block beside your sewing machine in the order they belong. Use the dimensions and seam allowance specified by your pattern; the tutorial does not prescribe a universal allowance, machine setup, needle, thread, or stitch length. Keep the pattern’s pressing directions handy, too, because pressing direction depends on the project.
The American Patchwork & Quilting Editors’ tutorial, published March 3, 2022, demonstrates the sequence in an approximately three-minute video and illustrated instructions: How to Chain-Piece an Entire Quilt Block.
#1 Best Overall
- Use this foot when pivoting, topstitching, or for 1/4" seams.
- Reference markings on the side of the foot for visibility and accuracy.
- Flat bottom ensures that the material will make good contact with the feed dogs.
- Guide on foot makes it easy to obtain a 1/4" seam allowance. Place the edge of the fabric against the guide while you sew.
- This 1/4 inch snap-on foot is compatible with most low shank machines (adapter may be required).
Chain-piece the pieces into rows
- Take the first two pieces of each horizontal row and place them right sides together, aligning the edge you will sew.
- Sew the first pair. Without cutting the thread, feed the first pair for the next row under the presser foot and sew it.
- Continue with the first pairs in the block, leaving the short thread links between sewn pairs intact.
- To extend the rows, place the next piece for each row right sides together with that row’s growing unit. Sew each addition in order, moving from row to row without clipping the connecting threads between pieces.
- Repeat until every row contains all its pieces. Press each completed row as the pattern directs; the tutorial does not require clipping the links between row pieces before pressing.
Working this way avoids stopping to clip after each pair. The tutorial presents that as a time-saving workflow, but does not quantify how much time it saves.
Join the rows and match the intersections
- Place the top two completed rows right sides together, matching their edges and the seam lines where pieces meet.
- Sew the rows together. Clip the thread chain after joining them, as in the tutorial.
- Place the next row right sides together with the joined section, align its seam intersections, and sew. Continue until all rows are joined.
- Press the completed block according to the pattern.
When two adjoining seam allowances are pressed in opposite directions, they can nest at a crossing. C&T Publishing’s seam-nesting guidance recommends matching the seam lines and arranging adjoining allowances on alternate sides of the crossing. If needed, place a pin close to the crossing on the far side of the seam to help keep the top fabric from shifting as the presser foot crosses the thicker area. Stitch just beyond the seam line before removing the pin.

Check the seam allowance if intersections won’t line up
A seam allowance that varies can make pieces or intersections harder to match. In a separate, undated lesson, quilting author Debby Kratovil advises checking for a true quarter-inch seam rather than assuming the edge of the presser foot gives one; masking tape on the machine’s throat plate can serve as a guide. This is supplementary advice, not a measurement specified by the block tutorial. Follow your pattern’s seam allowance. Read Kratovil’s chain-piecing lesson.
When to use webbing instead
In ordinary row-by-row chain piecing, pieces are connected by thread while they are sewn; rows are joined after they are assembled. Webbing is a related approach that deliberately leaves units linked as a grid is assembled. Those links can help keep pieces in order and make seam directions easier to see when nesting them, as explained in HollyAnne Knight’s webbing tutorial.

| Approach | Useful when | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Chain-piece rows | You can keep the cut pieces organized in their row order and want to sew each row before joining rows. | Press the completed rows as the pattern directs, then align their intersections when joining. |
| Web the units | Keeping grid pieces tethered would help you preserve their order or track seam directions during assembly. | It is a different assembly workflow; arrange and press seams as required by the pattern. |
Neither method is established as universally better. Choose the workflow that makes it easiest to keep your particular block in order and follow its pressing directions.

After assembling the rows for multiple blocks, you can chain-piece the top two rows of successive blocks together before clipping the thread chain, as the American Patchwork & Quilting tutorial describes. Keep each block’s remaining rows identifiable so you can join the correct rows together.
