Illustrator has several different “background” controls. Use Artboard Fill to change what you see while working, a transparency grid to inspect transparent areas, and a filled rectangle when the color must appear in a print or exported file.
For the fastest on-screen change, select the Artboard tool (Shift + O), select the artboard, then choose Properties > Artboards > Fill > Artboard Color Swatch. Choose a color and select OK.
Choose the right background method

Change an artboard’s visible color
- Select the Artboard tool in the toolbar, or press Shift + O.
- Click the artboard you want to change.
- Open the Properties panel. If it is hidden, choose Window > Properties.
- Under Artboards, open Fill.
- Select Artboard Color Swatch, choose a color, and select OK.
This changes the selected artboard’s display color, which is useful for checking white artwork, improving contrast, or organizing a document. Adobe documents this as an individual artboard setting, so different artboards can have different preview colors. See Adobe’s artboard background-color instructions.

Important: Treat this as a preview and organization setting. If the color must reliably appear in a PDF, SVG, print, or other exported artwork, add a real background object instead. This control changes the artboard, not the surrounding pasteboard.
Add a background that prints and exports
A filled rectangle is the safest method when the background is part of the design.
- Press M to select the Rectangle tool.
- Draw a rectangle covering the artboard.
- Set its Fill using the Fill control, Swatches panel, Color panel, or Color Picker.
- Set Stroke to None unless you want an outline.
- Choose Object > Arrange > Send to Back, or move the rectangle to the bottom of a dedicated layer.
- Rename the layer Background and lock it if you do not want to select it accidentally.
Use this approach for printed designs, PDFs, SVGs, EPS handoffs, social graphics, and files that must look the same in other applications. Confirm the rectangle fully covers the artboard and is visible before printing or exporting.
Make the rectangle match the artboard
For precise output, select the artboard with the Artboard tool and note its dimensions in the Properties panel. Give the rectangle the same width and height, then align it to the artboard’s edges. This avoids gaps caused by drawing it slightly too small.

Change the transparency-grid color
Use the transparency grid when you want to see whether empty areas are transparent or when white artwork disappears against a white artboard.
- Choose View > Show Transparency Grid.
- Choose File > Document Setup.
- Adjust Grid Size if needed.
- Choose a preset under Grid Colors, or select the two color boxes to choose custom colors.
- Close the dialog while leaving the transparency grid enabled.
The two color boxes control the alternating squares. Choosing the same color for both can make the canvas look like a solid custom color, but it is still only a viewing aid. It does not add a background to the artwork or export.

Preview artwork on colored paper
To simulate how colors may interact with colored stock, use Simulate Colored Paper in File > Document Setup. This is different from placing a colored rectangle behind the artwork. It simulates a substrate, so the perceived color of objects can change—for example, a blue object over simulated yellow paper may appear green.

Adobe notes that the simulation operates when the transparency grid is not displayed. Use it as a print-preview aid, not as a replacement for a background object in the final file. Read more about viewing artwork and colored-paper simulation.
Export a PNG with a background color
- Choose File > Export > Export As.
- Choose PNG as the format and select Export.
- In the PNG options, find Background Color.
- Choose Transparent, White, or Black. A custom option may be available in some Illustrator releases.
- Set the resolution and anti-aliasing options, then confirm the export.
This setting affects the rasterized PNG only. It does not create a reusable background in the Illustrator document. Adobe’s export documentation also includes Use Artboards, which lets you export all artboards or a specified range.
Export with a transparent background
For a logo, icon, sticker, or other transparent graphic:
- Do not add a visible background rectangle.
- Choose File > Export > Export As and select PNG.
- Choose Transparent under Background Color.
- Check the result in a browser or image viewer that supports transparency.
A viewer may show transparent pixels as white. That does not necessarily mean the file contains a white background. Turn on Illustrator’s transparency grid before exporting if you need to inspect the empty areas.

Working with multiple artboards
Artboard Fill applies to the currently selected artboard. Select each artboard and repeat the process if you want different preview colors. Do not assume one change applies to every artboard in your release.
If the colors must export, create a correctly sized background rectangle for each artboard, place each rectangle behind its corresponding design, and use Use Artboards during export. A single rectangle that does not cover every artboard may leave some exported files transparent or white.

The Properties panel or Fill control is missing
Choose Window > Properties, activate the Artboard tool, and click an artboard. The Artboards controls may not appear when an ordinary object or another tool is selected. Illustrator’s panel organization can vary between releases, so use the current desktop version’s Artboard and Properties controls.
The exported file is still white
- Open Window > Layers and hide any white rectangle or background layer.
- Turn on View > Show Transparency Grid.
- Export again and choose Transparent for PNG Background Color.
- Open the result in a transparency-aware viewer.
Also check whether the white area is built into a placed image. Changing Illustrator’s artboard color cannot remove white pixels that already exist inside an imported raster image. For suitable image objects, Illustrator includes a Remove Background feature; otherwise edit the image in a raster editor.

White artwork is difficult to see
Temporarily change the artboard’s Fill color or use a dark transparency-grid color. This does not recolor the white artwork. If its appearance genuinely changes, inspect the object’s Fill, opacity, blending mode, Transparency settings, and possible overprint behavior.
The background rectangle is selected or prints unexpectedly
Put it on a named Background layer, send it to the back, and lock the layer. For a transparent version, hide or delete the rectangle before export. If printing or saving to a format that handles transparency differently, review the output for flattening or appearance changes; Adobe discusses these considerations in its guide to printing and saving transparent artwork.
Quick method chooser
- Only need a darker working canvas? Use Artboard Fill.
- Need to inspect transparency? Use the Transparency Grid.
- Need the color in print, PDF, SVG, or EPS? Add a filled rectangle.
- Need a one-off PNG background? Set PNG Background Color during export.
- Need a transparent PNG? Remove or hide background artwork and choose Transparent.
- Need to preview colored paper? Use Simulate Colored Paper.
FAQ
How do I change the artboard color in Illustrator?
Select the Artboard tool (Shift + O), select the artboard, then choose Properties > Artboards > Fill > Artboard Color Swatch. Pick a color and select OK.
Will the artboard color appear when I export?
Treat Artboard Fill as a display and preview setting. For a background that reliably appears in print or exported artwork, add a filled rectangle behind the design. For a PNG, you can also choose a Background Color in the export options.

The Artboard Fill setting changes the selected artboard, not the surrounding pasteboard. For a colored final image, add a background rectangle or choose a PNG export background color.
How do I export a transparent PNG?
Hide or remove any background rectangle, export as PNG, and choose Transparent under Background Color. Verify the file in a viewer that supports transparency.
