To change an existing Canva design’s dimensions, open it and choose Resize & Magic Switch in the editor toolbar. Pick a preset or Custom Size, enter the new width and height, then choose Copy & Resize if you want to keep the original intact. The resized layout is a starting point: check every page and adjust the design before downloading.
Resize an existing Canva design on desktop
- Open the design in Canva.
- In the editor toolbar, select Resize & Magic Switch. Depending on the editor version or design type, the control may appear as Resize or in a menu.
- Choose a suggested format, or select Custom Size.
- Enter the target width and height. If a unit selector is available, choose pixels, inches, centimeters, or millimeters as appropriate.
- If Canva offers a page or section selection, check which pages the change will affect.
- Choose Resize to change the current design, or Copy & Resize to create a separate version.
- Open the result and inspect its pages, then correct any layout problems before exporting.
Canva describes its resize workflow as supporting presets and custom dimensions, with an option to resize the current design or create a copy. The exact labels and controls can vary by account, editor version, design type, and device. See Canva’s resize feature overview and its Help Center.
Resize or Copy & Resize?
- Resize changes the current design. Use it when you are comfortable modifying that version and have a backup if needed.
- Copy & Resize preserves the original and makes a separate version for the new format. It is usually the safer option for client work, reusable templates, and designs you may need again.
Choose custom dimensions and orientation
Page size means the dimensions of the canvas. It is different from the size of an individual text box or image, the pixel dimensions of an exported image, and a printed item’s physical size. Aspect ratio describes the relationship between width and height—for example, 1:1 is square, while 16:9 is wider than it is tall.

In Custom Size, enter a width and height and choose the unit shown in the editor. To switch orientation, swap the values: 1080 × 1920 px becomes 1920 × 1080 px; 8.5 × 11 in becomes 11 × 8.5 in; and 210 × 297 mm becomes 297 × 210 mm. The new canvas does not guarantee a balanced composition, especially when changing from portrait to landscape or vice versa.

These are common example sizes, not a guarantee of current platform or printer specifications. Confirm the destination’s requirements before exporting. Changing the unit or canvas dimensions does not create detail in a low-resolution source image.
Can you resize just one page?
Do not assume that pages in one Canva design can all have independent canvas dimensions. Canva’s documented resize API applies a resize to all pages of a multi-page design; its documentation also distinguishes section-level resizing in the user interface. The available page or section controls can depend on the design and current editor. Check the scope shown before you confirm. The API behavior is described in Canva’s resize API documentation; it is not a complete guide to every editor control.

If the editor does not offer the page-specific change you need, use a separate design:
- Duplicate the original design so you retain a safe copy.
- Create a new design at the required dimensions.
- Copy the relevant page’s elements into it, then arrange them for the new canvas.
- Keep the new design separate if you need different page sizes in the final files.
If one PDF must contain pages of different physical dimensions, do not assume a standard Canva export will produce that result. Use a workflow that explicitly supports mixed page sizes and confirm the printer or recipient accepts it.
Can you change page size in Canva for free?
Creating a new custom-size design and resizing an existing design are different actions. Canva’s existing-design resize feature may require premium access or be limited by the feature availability on your account. Canva’s API documentation describes premium-plan access for that API capability and a limited Free trial, but API entitlements do not establish the exact rules for every Canva editor account. Check the control shown in your account rather than relying on a blanket claim that all resizing is free—or that no free resizing is possible.

If the resize option is unavailable, you can usually use the manual route: create a new design at the target dimensions and copy over the old design’s elements. That takes more adjustment but can be enough for a one-off change. If you are considering a subscription just for resizing, check Canva’s current, region-specific pricing and weigh it against this workaround; a fixed price may vary by location and billing terms.
Change page size in the Canva mobile app
Open the design in the Canva app and check the More or three-dot menu for Resize, Resize & Magic Switch, or a related design option. If available, choose a preset or custom dimensions and select whether to change the design or make a copy. Menu names and availability may differ between iOS and Android, app versions, accounts, and design types. If you cannot find the control, create a new custom-size design and copy the contents across, or finish the resize on desktop.
What changes when you resize?
Resizing changes the canvas and may adapt the layout, but it is not a guaranteed redesign. Depending on the new ratio and the content, you may need to fix:

- Text: line breaks, text-box height, font size, and spacing can change; narrow canvases may cut off or wrap headings.
- Images: crops and positions may shift. Backgrounds can leave gaps or stop lining up with the page.
- Alignment: logos, icons, decorative elements, and grouped objects may need to move.
- Print layout: margins, trim and bleed areas may need separate attention; changing the page size does not by itself make a design print-ready.
A small square-to-portrait adjustment may need little cleanup; a vertical-to-horizontal conversion can require a substantial rearrangement. Enlarging a design for print also does not add resolution to small raster images. Replace blurry or undersized source images rather than expecting a dimension change to restore detail.

Resize is missing or unavailable
Check the editor toolbar and its More menu, then consider whether the account includes the feature and whether the design type supports it. Canva documents restrictions for some resize workflows, including certain Docs, email, Canva Code, responsive, or controlled-page cases; support depends on the workflow. If the option remains unavailable, create a custom-size design and copy the content into it.
The new layout looks wrong
If you changed the original and the result is poor, undo the change if possible or return to your backup. For another attempt, use Copy & Resize so the source stays untouched. Inspect every page, reposition elements, and consider rebuilding the layout in a new design when the aspect ratio is very different.

Text is cut off
Expand the text box, adjust line spacing, or reflow and shorten the copy. Reduce the font size only if that still suits the design. Check the text at the intended export size, not just while zoomed in on the editor.
Images look blurry
Replace low-resolution or heavily compressed images with larger, sharper source files. A change in units or canvas size cannot add missing image detail; avoid enlarging small raster assets for large-format print.
The wrong pages changed
Before confirming a resize in a multi-page design, check any page or section selection offered by the editor. If there is no suitable page-specific control, stop and use a separate custom-size design for the page that needs a different format.

- Verify that the design has the intended dimensions and units using the resize controls or design information available in your editor.
- Review every page at a useful zoom level for clipped text, awkward crops, gaps, and alignment issues.
- For print, check the printer’s required dimensions, margins, bleed, color and export settings. Do not assume resizing supplied them automatically.
- Download a test file and inspect it at its intended use size before delivering or printing it.
For precise PDF page-box edits, mixed-size PDF pages, or production requirements such as controlled bleed and trim, a dedicated PDF or professional layout workflow may be more appropriate than resizing an editable Canva design.
