Inspect the brush before every use. In bright light, examine the entire brush head and where the bristles attach. If even one bristle is loose or broken, do not use the brush: discard it and replace it. Before putting food on the grill, inspect the cooking grate for detached bristles and wipe it with a damp cloth or paper towel. Also check the brush’s brand and model against current U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recalls; a recalled brush is unsafe to use even when it looks intact.
Why a loose grill-brush bristle is a food-safety hazard
Wire bristles can break away from a brush, remain on the cooking grate and end up in food. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA FSIS) says reported injuries have occurred when people unintentionally swallowed wire grill-brush bristles. Its guidance explains the risk and suggests considering other cleaning methods or products: USDA FSIS guidance on wire grill brushes.

A visual inspection reduces the chance of using a visibly damaged brush, but it cannot guarantee that a brush will never shed a bristle. That is why you need two checks: inspect the brush before cleaning and inspect the grate before cooking. CPSC Acting Chairman Peter A. Feldman summarized the second check in a February 26, 2026 statement: “Before grilling, inspect the grill surface for any detached bristles and examine food closely.”
The risk is not limited to a brush that looks obviously worn out. A single short wire can be hard to spot against a dark grate, and a brush can be covered by a recall before a visible failure appears. Treat the inspection as a routine barrier, not as proof that the tool is permanently safe.

How to inspect the brush before each use
Make this inspection part of your normal grill setup, before the brush touches the grate. The official discard threshold is simple: any loose or broken bristle means the brush should not be used.
1. Examine the whole bristle field in good light
Hold the brush so you can see the bristle field from more than one angle. Look across the surface rather than only at the end of the brush. You are looking for:
- Gaps where bristles appear to be missing.
- Individual wires that stand out, move independently or no longer sit firmly with the rest of the bristles.
- Bristles that are bent, shortened or visibly broken.
- Rust, deformation or other damage that makes the bristle field look uneven.
These are visual checks, not a certified strength or laboratory test. Do not treat a brush as safe merely because it passes a quick glance. Rotate the head and inspect both the working face and the sides; a damaged wire may be hidden when you view the brush straight on. If the bristles are dirty, clean the tool according to its manufacturer’s directions before inspecting it, so residue does not conceal a gap or broken end.
2. Check the bristle attachment point
Inspect the area where the bristles enter or join the brush head. Look for movement, cracks, separation, missing material or a section that is pulling away from the head. A brush can shed from its attachment area even when most of the visible bristles look normal.
Pay particular attention to corners and the ends of rows. Compare one section with the neighboring sections for an uneven line or an empty pocket. Do not create your own pass/fail test by pulling hard on the wires: the official guidance establishes a visual discard threshold, not a validated tug test. If you can see a bristle moving independently, stop there and discard the brush.

Look at the brush head, any scraper or other integrated part, and the connection to the handle. Damage that allows the head to flex or separate can put extra stress on the bristle attachment. If any part is visibly damaged, do not keep using the brush in the hope that it will last through one more cleaning.
Check for a loose handle, cracked plastic, a bent metal frame or a fastener that has shifted. These conditions do not require a separate repair decision: when damage could affect how the bristles stay attached, retiring the brush is the safer choice.

4. Apply the discard rule immediately
Weber’s safety instructions say not to use a grill brush with a loose or broken bristle and to discard it immediately. Do not trim a suspect wire, glue it back, bend it into place or attempt another repair; the cited safety guidance provides no repair method that makes a damaged brush safe. The instruction is to stop using and replace it. See Weber’s product safety instructions for Part No. 6493: Weber Grill Brush safety instructions.
5. Check the product identity before deciding to keep it
Find the brand and model number on the handle, packaging or product label. A brush can be subject to a safety recall even when your inspection finds no loose wire. Check the exact model against the current CPSC notice and follow the remedy if it matches.

Record the full model number, including dashes or suffixes, rather than relying on a brand name alone. A notice can cover only specific models, or it can expand later. If the label is missing and you cannot identify the product, do not assume that an unmarked wire brush is cleared; continue the condition checks and consider a non-wire replacement.
How to check the cooking grate for detached bristles
Inspect the grate after cleaning and again before cooking. A detached wire can be difficult to see, especially on a dark or heavily seasoned grate, so use a deliberate check instead of assuming that heating the grill will remove it.
- Let the grate reach a condition where you can inspect it safely. Avoid touching a hot surface. Follow your grill manufacturer’s handling instructions for removing or examining the grate.
- Look over the entire cooking surface. Check between bars, along edges and around areas where food will sit. Look for short, shiny wires or anything that does not belong on the grate.
- Wipe the grate. Weber recommends wiping the cooking grate with a damp cloth or paper towel to reduce the chance of leftover bristles. The wipe is a risk-reduction step, not proof that every bristle has been removed. Weber describes the issue here: Loose bristles on the cooking grate.
- Examine food as you transfer and serve it. CPSC specifically advises inspecting the grill surface and examining food closely before grilling.
Use the same sequence if you cleaned the grate earlier in the day. Vibration, moving the grate or handling utensils can shift a small wire into a different position. Inspect the spaces between bars, the perimeter and any grease channel where a bristle could lodge. A light-colored cloth can make a shiny wire easier to notice, but the cited guidance does not establish a particular cloth, lighting level or magnification method as a guarantee.
If you find a wire on the grate, remove it safely, inspect the brush that produced it and do not resume cleaning with that brush. A single detached bristle is evidence that the brush has failed the safety check.
Check for a current recall by brand and model
Recall status takes precedence over appearance. The notices below are U.S. CPSC recalls identified through August 2026; they are not an exhaustive worldwide list. Covered models, remedies and available stock can change, so open the current notice and follow its instructions rather than relying on an old summary.

| Weber, February 26, 2026 | About 3.2 million metal wire-bristle brushes; models 6277, 6278, 6463, 6464, 6493 and 6494 only. | CPSC says small metal bristles can detach, stick to the grill or food and create an ingestion hazard with a risk of serious internal injury. The notice reports at least 38 reports and reviews of detached bristles, including four reports of people who swallowed bristles and sought medical treatment. | Immediately stop using a covered brush, contact Weber, discard it and obtain the listed cold-cleaning nylon-bristle replacement through Weber’s remedy. |
| Nexgrill, March 26, 2026; remedy updated June 23, 2026 | About 10.2 million brushes; models 530-0024, 530-0024G, 530-0034, 530-0039, 530-0041 and 530-0042. | The page reports at least 68 detachment reports and reviews, including five reports of people who swallowed bristles and sought medical treatment. | Stop using the covered model, contact Nexgrill for the refund remedy and follow the company’s directions for disposal. |
| Cuisinart/Conair, recall expansion August 27, 2026 | 1,905,805 additional brushes, bringing the stated total to 3,625,800. The notice includes all Cuisinart-brand wire-bristle grill brushes, including additional individually sold and set brushes sold before 2020, across the models listed in the notice. | The page reports at least 54 detachment reports and reviews, including three reports of people seeking medical treatment after swallowing bristles. | Stop using a covered brush, contact Conair for its refund or credit remedy and discard it as instructed. |
The report counts in these notices are counts of reports and reviews, not population-level injury rates or probabilities. Do not combine them into a single risk percentage. If your brush is not one of the listed models, that does not prove that every other wire brush is safe; continue the pre-use and grate inspections and check the current CPSC recall database for your product and location.
When checking a notice, match both the brand and the model. Read the remedy section completely: one company may provide a replacement, while another may require a refund, credit or a particular disposal process. Keep the notice open while you contact the company so you use the current phone number, form or instructions. Do not put a recalled brush back into service while waiting for a response.
What to do when you find a loose, broken or missing bristle
Stop using the brush
Set it aside immediately. Do not finish the grate, test it on another surface or use it only for a quick touch-up. Once a bristle is loose or broken, the brush has reached the discard threshold in Weber’s safety instructions.

Trimming a wire can leave a smaller sharp fragment, while glue or a replacement wire has not been validated by the cited sources. There is no supported home repair that restores the brush’s safety. Discard the brush according to local waste rules and any instructions in a recall notice.
Inspect the grill before cooking
Check the grate for any wire that may have detached during the failed cleaning. Use the damp-cloth or paper-towel wipe recommended by Weber, then examine the surface and food closely. If you cannot confidently remove a suspected wire, do not place food on that surface until it has been safely cleaned according to the grill manufacturer’s instructions.
Follow the recall remedy if the model is covered
Do not substitute your own disposal or replacement plan for the company’s instructions. The 2026 notices differ: Weber identifies a nylon replacement, Nexgrill specifies a refund and disposal directions, and Conair specifies a refund or credit and disposal instructions. Use the notice for your exact model.
Choosing a replacement cleaning method
A non-wire tool is a relevant replacement path when you are retiring a damaged or recalled wire brush. USDA FSIS advises considering other methods or products, and the Weber recall remedy identifies a nylon-bristle replacement. These sources support switching away from wire, but they do not establish that nylon, wooden scrapers, coil tools or any other category cleans better or lasts longer than another.

Before buying or using a replacement, evaluate it against the same safety questions:
- Is the construction non-wire, or does it contain any metal bristles that can detach?
- Can you easily see whether the cleaning material is loose, broken or worn?
- Is it compatible with the material and care instructions for your grill grate?
- Does the exact product have a current recall?
- Does the manufacturer provide instructions for cleaning, storage and replacement?
Whatever tool you choose, inspect it before each use and inspect the grate before cooking. Changing tool types does not remove the need for those checks.
Do not choose a replacement solely because it is labeled “safe” or because it looks different from a wire brush. Confirm its construction, read the grill maker’s care instructions and check the exact product for recalls. A replacement is not a reason to skip the final grate and food inspection.

- Brush identity: Brand and model are known and checked against current recall notices.
- Bristle field: No missing-looking spaces, independently moving bristles, bent wires or broken ends are visible.
- Attachment: The bristles and brush head are secure, with no separation or cracking.
- Decision: Any loose or broken bristle means immediate discard; there is no repair step.
- Grate: The complete cooking surface has been inspected for detached wires.
- Wipe: A damp cloth or paper towel has been used as a risk-reduction step where appropriate.
- Food: Food is examined closely before serving.
Run through the list every time, even if the brush was used only once or stored cleanly. The check takes less time than investigating a missing wire after food has been served, and it catches both condition problems and recall matches.

Inspection is practical prevention, not a guarantee. A brush that looks intact can still be included in a recall, and a small detached wire can be difficult to see on a grate. That is why the safest routine combines condition checks, model-specific recall checks and a final grate inspection. If a recall notice covers your brush, stop using it regardless of how clean or undamaged it appears.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my grill brush is shedding bristles?
Before every use, inspect the bristle field and attachment point in good light from more than one angle. Missing-looking gaps, independently moving wires, bent or broken ends, separation or cracks indicate that the brush should not be used. This visual check reduces risk but cannot guarantee that a brush will never shed a bristle.
Should I throw away a grill brush if one bristle is loose?
Yes. Weber’s safety instructions say not to use a brush with any loose or broken bristle and to discard it immediately. Do not trim, glue, bend or replace an individual wire; the cited guidance provides no validated repair method.

Can I keep using a brush that looks intact if it is recalled?
No. Recall status takes precedence over appearance. Stop using the exact recalled model and follow the current company and CPSC remedy, which may involve a replacement, refund, credit and specified disposal steps.
How often should I inspect the cooking grate?
Inspect it after cleaning and again before cooking. Look between bars, along edges and over the full food-contact surface. Weber also recommends wiping the grate with a damp cloth or paper towel as a risk-reduction step, then examining food closely.
Are these recall numbers probabilities of injury?
No. The CPSC figures are counts of reports and reviews on individual recall notices, including some reports of people seeking medical treatment. They are not population-level rates and should not be combined into a single percentage.
What should I do if I find a wire on the grate?
Remove it safely, stop using the brush that may have shed it and inspect the entire grate again. Use the manufacturer-recommended cleaning procedure; if you cannot confidently remove a suspected wire, do not put food on that surface.
Is a nylon or non-wire tool automatically safe?
Non-wire tools are a supported replacement path, and the Weber remedy identifies a nylon-bristle replacement. However, inspect any tool for loose or worn material, confirm compatibility with your grate and check the exact product for recalls. No source here ranks nylon, wooden scrapers, coils or other tools by cleaning performance or durability.
Which models are included in the 2026 recalls listed here?
The Weber notice covers models 6277, 6278, 6463, 6464, 6493 and 6494. Nexgrill covers 530-0024, 530-0024G, 530-0034, 530-0039, 530-0041 and 530-0042. The expanded Cuisinart/Conair notice includes all Cuisinart-brand wire-bristle brushes described in its model list, including additional individually sold and set brushes sold before 2020. Check the live notice for the complete details.
The Bottom Line
Before every use, inspect the brush head, bristle attachments and model number. Any loose or broken bristle means immediate discard—never repair it. Before cooking, inspect and wipe the grate, examine food closely and check current CPSC recalls. A recalled brush must be removed from service even if it looks undamaged.
