Choose a cake topper to suit the occasion and cake design, then check its dimensions, material, personalization and placement instructions. A topper described as acrylic, wood or “food-safe” is not automatically suitable for direct food contact. If it is not edible, remove it before serving.
Start with the occasion and cake design
Birthday, wedding and other celebration toppers range from personalized names, ages or short phrases to ready-made designs. Pick a style that fits the occasion and remains legible against the cake: consider contrast, lettering and how much of the cake’s decoration the topper will cover. Personalized toppers are one common option, but a ready-made design may be simpler when you do not need custom wording.

Commercial listings commonly describe toppers made from acrylic, wood, cardstock, fondant or wafer paper. These are examples of products on the market, not a complete or standardized list. Judge the finish and intended use from the specific product listing rather than assuming that every item in a material category looks or performs the same way. Check the size and how it stands
Compare the listed width and height with the cake and the display around it. Make sure the wording or design will be visible without overwhelming the cake, and check how the support is intended to sit. A product photo alone may not reveal the topper’s actual scale or support arrangement.

There is no universal topper-to-cake size ratio established by the available guidance. Measure the cake you plan to use and confirm the product’s actual dimensions and placement instructions before ordering. If the topper is personalized, verify the spelling and any proofing details with the seller; lead times and whether an item arrives ready to place can vary by product.
Choose edible or non-edible for the right reason
Edible toppers, such as some fondant or wafer-paper designs, are intended to be eaten when the specific product is made and sold for that use. Non-edible toppers are decorative items or keepsakes, not food. Do not infer that a topper is edible—or safe for direct food contact—from its material name or a general claim on a listing.

The FDA’s guidance focuses specifically on glitter and dust marketed for food decoration: these should be manufactured to be edible before they are used directly on food. Check the ingredient list. “Non-toxic” or “for decorative purposes only” without an ingredient list does not establish that a product is edible. The FDA also says that non-edible decorations should be removed before food is served. Read the FDA’s guidance on non-edible food decorations.
For materials that may contact food, the FDA’s food-contact information concerns particular substances, uses and conditions; it is not a blanket approval of every finished topper made from a broadly named material. Check the individual product’s instructions and any specific substantiation the seller provides. The FDA inventory lists food-contact substances authorized in 21 CFR, and its consumer information explains the food-contact framework.

Follow the specific product’s instructions
Storage and placement directions differ between edible products. For example, the caker says to keep its own icing-sheet toppers sealed until use, not refrigerate or freeze them, and dampen the cake icing rather than the topper. Those directions apply to that seller’s products, not to every edible topper. Check the caker’s FAQs or follow the instructions supplied with the topper you buy.
