An open toy storage basket or canvas bin can keep a baby’s toys organized and accessible. For a nursery, prioritize an easy-to-reach opening and avoid hazardous lids; then compare the basket’s size, stability, material, cleaning needs and handles against your room and the toys you need to store.
Why choose an open toy storage basket?
The Public Health Agency of Canada recommends open storage, including baskets or canvas bins, for organizing a baby’s toys. An open top also avoids the lid-related risks that can come with enclosed bins: the agency warns that a lid could fall on a baby or trap a child inside a toy bin.

What to compare before buying
Dimensions and capacity
Check the basket’s internal dimensions against the toys you plan to put in it, as well as the space available in the room. Capacity alone may not tell you whether a particular toy will fit or whether the basket will be convenient to use.

Opening and access
Consider whether a child or caregiver can reach into the basket easily. For a nursery, an open, accessible design is a more relevant priority than decorative features.

Think about how the basket sits when it is partly filled, not only when it is empty or packed full. Stability is a practical comparison point; there is no standardized rating or test result established here for baskets as a category.

Handles may be useful if you expect to move the basket between rooms. Check how they are attached and whether they suit the basket’s intended load; no particular handle design or load limit is established for the category.

Why lids and toy chests need extra care
Enclosed storage can introduce hazards that an open basket avoids. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) identifies pinching, crushing, laceration and suffocation hazards associated with toy chests. Its general guidance for a toy chest is to use a lid that stays open at any raised position, provide ventilation, and check for sharp edges and pinching hinges.
In its February 2012 publication For Kids’ Sake: Think Toy Safety (Publication 281), the CPSC advises: “Use a toy chest that has a lid that will stay open in any position to which it is raised, and will not fall unexpectedly on a child.” This is general advice for toy chests, not evidence that a particular chest or basket has been tested or certified.

Does toy-safety regulation certify a storage basket?
Not automatically. The CPSC says ASTM F963 is a mandatory toy safety standard under 16 C.F.R. part 1250 and identifies ASTM F963-23 for toys manufactured after April 20, 2024. Its guidance concerns covered children’s toys and related certification duties. Whether a particular storage item is a children’s product or toy depends on its design, intended use, presentation and the applicable rules. Do not assume a basket is certified just because toy-safety standards exist.
The CPSC’s small-parts ban applies to certain products intended for children under three when small parts present a choking, aspiration or ingestion hazard. Keeping small pieces together in a basket does not establish that the basket prevents choking or makes a hazardous toy compliant.
