Uni-Brace is Uni-Pier Australia’s adjustable, telescopic system for bracing construction sub-floors. It is intended as an alternative to threaded rod with turnbuckles or 50 × 50 angle, and its telescoping members let installers fit a range of diagonal spans without cutting members to length. The current product range covers nominal sizes from 900 mm to 1,800 mm, with maximum extensions from 2,100 mm to 5,700 mm.
The important limitation is that a product size is not a structural design by itself. Uni-Pier’s selection tables are bounded by stated building height, stump spacing, wind, roof and floor-load assumptions. Use them only within that scope, confirm the current manufacturer documentation, and obtain project-specific engineering advice for large point loads, unusual geometry or uncertainty about wind classification.

What Uni-Brace is designed to do
Uni-Brace is a prefabricated cross-bracing assembly for construction sub-floors. The assembly telescopes to suit the measured diagonal between supports, then is screw-fixed to the structure and locked by tightening the centre assembly. Uni-Pier describes it as suitable for bracing its own steel posts and for bracing non-Uni-Pier steel posts and timber.
The system is designed to provide both compression and tension bracing. Its adjustable layout can accommodate non-symmetrical arrangements, which is useful where posts, stumps or ground conditions do not create identical bays. The brochure also describes a galvanised finish and a design that avoids cutting members on site. Those features can simplify installation, but they do not remove the need to verify the bracing layout and connections for the actual building.
Uni-Brace is generally presented for residential roof and floor loads. A building with concentrated reactions, unusual framing, non-residential loading or other atypical conditions should be referred to a registered practising structural engineer rather than being forced into a standard selection-table result.

The current Uni-Pier product page lists four sizes. “Nominal length” identifies the product designation; the usable installation range is given by the minimum and maximum extension.
| Type | Nominal length | Minimum extension | Maximum extension | Listed corrosion zone |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 900BR | 900 mm | 1,640 mm | 2,100 mm | C3 |
| 1200BR | 1,200 mm | 1,940 mm | 3,300 mm | C3 |
| 1500BR | 1,500 mm | 2,240 mm | 4,500 mm | C3 |
| 1800BR | 1,800 mm | 2,540 mm | 5,700 mm | C3 |
These are manufacturer-published product dimensions, not a guarantee that every span in the range is acceptable for every building. A brace must be selected from the applicable table and checked against the project’s support spacing, height, wind classification, loads and connection conditions.
How to decide whether the selection guide applies
Before measuring for a brace, establish whether the project falls within the brochure’s stated selection-guide scope. The guide covers cross-bracing between stumps, including Uni-Pier and steel posts, up to 3.6 m high and with a maximum spacing of 4.8 m. Its quantity table assumes a single-storey house with a maximum roof pitch of 35 degrees.

Check the physical limits
- Post or stump height: no more than 3.6 m under the guide’s stated assumptions.
- Maximum spacing between supports: 4.8 m.
- Building height assumption: no more than 5.5 m from ground-floor level to the highest point of the roof.
- Roof pitch: no more than 35 degrees for the quantity-table assumption.
If the proposed structure exceeds one of these limits, the table is not automatically transferable. A designer must determine the required bracing arrangement and connections for the actual geometry.
Identify the correct wind classification
The guide instructs the user to select the table for the site’s wind classification. Wind classification is a project-specific location and building-design matter, not a value to guess from the product name. If it is unknown, the brochure advises consulting a registered structural engineer. Do this before ordering quantities or fixing braces.
Understand the load assumptions
The brochure lists the following design assumptions:
| Design item | Assumed value in the brochure |
|---|---|
| Maximum post or stump height | 3.6 m |
| Maximum from ground-floor level to roof high point | 5.5 m |
| Floor dead load | 0.5 kPa |
| Internal floor live load | 1.5 kPa |
| External floor live load | 3.0 kPa |
| Roof live load | 0.25 kPa |
| Maximum roof pitch | 35 degrees |
These figures describe the basis of that manufacturer guide. They are not universal values for every Australian project and should not be substituted for calculations where the building has heavier finishes, unusual occupancy, concentrated loads, different geometry or another structural system.
Measuring the diagonal and choosing a brace
- Measure the proposed bay. Determine the diagonal distance between the connection locations, accounting for the actual post or stump positions and any uneven ground or differing support heights.
- Allow for overlap at the posts. The brochure’s procedure says to include the required post overlap when determining the brace length. Do not treat the clear diagonal between post faces as the complete assembly dimension.
- Compare the result with the span table. Select the Uni-Brace type whose permitted extension covers the measured requirement and whose use is allowed by the applicable wind and loading table.
- Check the layout, not just the length. Confirm that the brace can be installed with the intended upper and lower connections, that the diagonals can be aligned, and that the substrate accepts the specified fasteners.
- Check quantity and direction. Use the guide’s quantity information only when the stated single-storey, roof-pitch, height, spacing and load assumptions apply. The number of braces is a design decision; do not infer it from the availability of a suitably long product.
If the measured diagonal falls outside the listed extension range, do not cut, weld or otherwise modify a brace as an improvised solution. Recheck the measurement and obtain a design solution for the geometry.

1. Prepare the work area and tools
The manufacturer identifies a drill with suitable driver bits and clamps as required tools. Confirm that the support surfaces are accessible, sound and ready to receive the specified screws. Keep the assembly supported while it is being positioned; do not rely on partly driven screws to carry an unsecured brace.
2. Open and position the assembly
Extend the telescopic members to the measured span, including the required overlap at the posts. Place the assembly in the planned diagonal position. The diagonals should be arranged so they can be brought as straight as possible without forcing the posts out of alignment.
3. Temporarily fix the upper arms
The brochure’s sequence starts with temporary fixing of the upper arms. Use this stage to hold the assembly in its intended location while you confirm the lower connections and the overall line of the diagonals.
4. Temporarily fix the lower arms
With the upper arms held, position and temporarily fix the lower arms. Check that the assembly bears against the intended connection areas and that the telescopic members have not shifted from the selected span.
5. Adjust the centre assembly
Adjust the centre assembly until the diagonals are as straight as possible. Avoid leaving a pronounced bow or slack condition. Alignment is part of the installation, not merely a cosmetic adjustment, because the connection and bracing arrangement must match the selected design detail.
6. Install the specified screws
The brochure gives substrate-specific fastener guidance:

| Substrate | Specified fastener in the July 2015 brochure |
|---|---|
| Steel | 14-20 × 22 AS3566 Class 4 screws |
| Timber | Type 17, 14-10 × 65 AS3566 Class 4 screws |
| Where treatment is required | Use treated screws as required for the application |
Fastener selection depends on the substrate and the current approved connection detail. Because the brochure is dated July 2015 and says its technical information may be revised, verify the current manufacturer instructions before reproducing or relying on these specifications. Do not substitute a convenient screw solely because it has a similar diameter or length.

7. Fully tighten the centre bolts
After the diagonals and posts are fastened, fully tighten the M8 bolts in the centre plate. The product page and brochure both require mechanical tightening of the bolts and screws. Use the current installation documentation for any torque or tightening procedure that applies to the supplied assembly.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Connection and substrate checks
A telescopic brace only performs as intended when its end connections and centre assembly are installed as specified. Before final tightening, check:
- Each upper and lower arm is fixed to the intended structural member rather than cladding or a non-structural lining.
- The support material matches the connection detail: steel and timber use different specified screws.
- Fasteners are fully seated and mechanically tightened, with no damaged heads, stripped threads or visibly loose members.
- The diagonal members remain straight and the centre assembly is secure after final tightening.
- The selected brace and quantity correspond to the correct wind-classification and loading table.
If a post is damaged, inaccessible, undersized or not in the position assumed by the design, stop and resolve the connection detail before continuing. A longer brace cannot compensate for an inadequate support or an unverified screw connection.
When engineering advice is required
The brochure states that Uni-Brace is generally designed for residential applications, including roof and floor loads, and directs buildings with large point loads or unusual structural designs to a registered practising structural engineer. Seek that advice where any of the following apply:
- The project is more than a typical single-storey residential arrangement.
- Post or stump height, spacing, building height or roof pitch exceeds the guide’s assumptions.
- Wind classification is unknown, disputed or outside the table being used.
- There are concentrated reactions from beams, posts, masonry, heavy cladding, tanks or other point loads.
- The support geometry is irregular, the ground is significantly uneven or the intended layout differs from the guide’s cross-bracing arrangement.
- The project requires a different substrate, non-standard fasteners or a connection not shown in current documentation.
The brochure includes a certification statement attributed to Trevor Hall, FIE Aust. CPEng rpeq 5081, of Kneebone, Beretta & Hall Pty. Ltd. It is a statement printed in the July 2015 manufacturer brochure. It should not be presented as current regulatory approval or as an independent assessment of a particular building. Obtain current project-specific documentation where compliance depends on it.

How Uni-Brace compares with other bracing approaches
Uni-Pier describes Uni-Brace as an alternative to threaded rod with turnbuckles or 50 × 50 angle. The available product material does not establish a universal performance ranking between those approaches. A responsible comparison should examine the actual project rather than treating one method as automatically superior.
| Comparison question | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Span and adjustment | Whether the system covers the measured diagonal and how much adjustment remains after installation. |
| Substrate and connections | Which screws, bolts, plates and support materials are approved for the connection. |
| Site geometry | Whether uneven ground, different post heights or a non-symmetrical bay can be detailed safely. |
| Wind and structural loads | Which classification and load assumptions govern the design. |
| Corrosion exposure | Whether the specified finish and listed corrosion zone suit the site conditions. |
| Installation | Required drilling, clamping, alignment, temporary fixing and mechanical tightening. |
| Design evidence | Current tables, engineering details, compliance documents and warranty terms available for the project. |
This comparison prevents a common error: choosing a system because it is fast to install while overlooking whether its design evidence and connections address the building’s actual loads.
Warranty, compliance and document currency
The current product page claims a 25-year warranty and compliance with the Building Code of Australia and National Construction Code. Those are manufacturer claims. Confirm the current warranty wording, exclusions, installation conditions, applicable edition of the technical documentation and the project’s own compliance requirements before relying on them.

Practical installation checklist
- Confirm the project is within the guide’s height, spacing, roof-pitch and loading assumptions.
- Establish the correct wind classification before using a selection table.
- Measure the diagonal and include post overlap.
- Choose 900BR, 1200BR, 1500BR or 1800BR only when its extension range and design table suit the bay.
- Verify the current substrate-specific screw specification.
- Have a drill, suitable driver bits and clamps ready.
- Temporarily fix upper and lower arms before final alignment.
- Adjust the centre assembly so the diagonals are as straight as possible.
- Mechanically tighten all specified screws and the M8 centre-plate bolts.
- Stop for structural-engineer advice when loads, geometry or wind conditions are outside the guide.
The Bottom Line
Uni-Brace can make sub-floor bracing faster to measure and install because its telescopic members cover several span ranges without cutting. Select it from the current manufacturer tables, install the specified connections for the actual substrate, and treat the brochure’s residential assumptions as boundaries—not as a substitute for project-specific structural design.
