How to Choose and Use Plywood: 13 Essentials Every DIYer Needs to Know

Choose plywood confidently by separating appearance grades from structural ratings, understanding what CDX and Exposure 1 mean, matching panels to moisture and support conditions, and preparing, cutting and fastening sheets without avoidable damage.

Choose plywood by matching four things to the job: the face appearance you need, the structural rating and support spacing, the moisture exposure, and the finish you plan to apply. A sheet marked “CDX” is commonly Exposure 1—not Exterior—so it is not a permanent-weather panel. The sections below show how to read the stamp, select a suitable panel, cut and fasten it, and avoid common failures.

1. Plywood is a laminated veneer product

Plywood is made by bonding thin wood veneers under heat and pressure. Adjacent veneer plies are generally arranged with their grain at right angles. That cross-lamination balances strength and helps the panel remain more dimensionally stable in both directions than a single solid-wood board of the same size. It does not make every sheet flat or immune to moisture movement: panels can still expand, contract, cup or warp as their moisture content changes.

For painting projects, this layered construction explains why an exposed edge shows alternating grain directions and why a damaged face can sometimes reveal a thin veneer rather than solid stock. It also means sanding through the face veneer can permanently expose a less attractive layer.

2. Face and back letters describe appearance, not the whole panel

Letter grades on the face and back primarily describe veneer appearance and surface defects. A higher-looking face is appropriate when the plywood will remain visible under paint, stain or clear finish; an unsanded structural sheet is intended for locations where the surface will be covered or appearance is secondary. Grade names alone do not tell you the panel’s allowable span, load capacity or moisture classification.

When the face matters, inspect the actual sheet. Veneer repairs, patches, open defects and color variation can differ between sheets carrying the same general grade. Confirm that the specific panel can accept your planned primer, paint, laminate or edge treatment rather than assuming every plywood surface behaves alike.

3. Appearance grade never replaces a structural rating

Structural plywood and sheathing use markings that communicate performance beyond face quality. A panel may look smooth yet be unsuitable for a floor, roof or wall span, while a rough-looking sheathing panel may be fully appropriate for that structural use when its rating and installation match the design.

For load-bearing work, use the applicable design tables, installation schedule and local building code. Support spacing, design loads, panel orientation, fastener schedule and the exact product trademark all affect the result. This guide helps you identify those factors; it is not a structural design.

4. Read the complete panel stamp

Look for the APA trademark and read every part of the mark rather than relying on a store description. APA identifies the information that can include panel grade or use, span rating, exposure classification, performance category (the code-linked nominal thickness designation), and other product details. APA’s plywood overview explains how these markings work: APA plywood guidance.

For structural plywood manufactured under the U.S. voluntary standard, the applicable document is Voluntary Product Standard PS 1-22, Structural Plywood, revised October 2, 2023: PS 1-22 from APA. Compare the stamp with the plans or code requirements before buying; two sheets that look alike can carry different designations.

5. Span rating is tied to support spacing and orientation

A span rating is not a universal promise that a panel can carry any load. It is tied to the spacing of the supports and to the strength axis assumed by the rating. Install the sheet in the orientation shown by the product mark or design guidance, and make sure joist, rafter or stud spacing matches the stated condition.

Do not substitute a thicker-looking or cosmetically better sheet without checking its rating. For floors, roofs and other structural assemblies, verify the design load, deflection limits, edge support and fastening requirements together; changing one component can change the assembly’s performance.

6. Performance category is the code-linked thickness designation

Nominal thickness language can be confusing because the number used in casual conversation is not always the designation used by current building-code tables. APA describes performance category as the primary, code-linked nominal-thickness designation. Read the performance category on the stamp and compare it with the project’s specified thickness and actual requirements.

Do not infer structural capacity from a tape-measured thickness alone. Manufacturing tolerances, panel construction and the marked performance category all matter, so retain the product information if an inspector or engineer needs to verify the installation.

7. Exposure 1 and Exterior mean different moisture service

Exposure 1 panels are made to tolerate limited moisture, such as rain during a normal construction delay, before the assembly is enclosed. They are not intended for repeated wetting and drying or for a surface that remains exposed to weather.

Exterior classification is intended for repeated wetting and drying or long-term exposure. Select it when the panel’s service conditions call for that level of bond durability. Neither classification, by itself, makes plywood decay-proof: drainage, flashing, ventilation, edge protection, coating, detailing and maintenance determine whether wood remains dry enough to avoid decay.

For a painted outdoor project, classify the exposure first, then design the assembly so water can drain and the finish system can be maintained. A weather-resistant label cannot compensate for trapped water or unprotected end grain.

8. “CDX” is not a synonym for exterior plywood

In common trade usage, CDX usually identifies an Exposure 1 plywood panel. The “C” and “D” refer to the face and back veneer grades, while the “X” is commonly used in the trade name; it does not change the exposure classification. APA states: “Panels commonly referred to as ‘CDX’ are Exposure 1, not Exterior, and should only be used where long-term weather exposure is not expected.” See APA’s FAQ for the classification explanation: APA frequently asked questions.

That makes CDX useful for many sheathing applications protected by the completed building, but a poor default for a permanently exposed sign, shed wall, outdoor cabinet or other weather-facing surface. Check the actual stamp because trade terminology is less reliable than the manufacturer’s marked classification.

9. Bond classification is not a decay-resistance rating

The adhesive bond classification tells you about the bond’s intended durability under specified moisture conditions; it does not certify that the wood is decay-resistant. Decay protection depends on the whole design: keeping water out, allowing wet components to dry, protecting cuts and edges, and maintaining coatings and joints.

Even an Exterior-bonded panel can deteriorate if it is installed where water is trapped. Conversely, an Exposure 1 sheet may perform appropriately when it is kept within its intended, protected service condition.

10. Match the surface to the project and finish

Use unsanded sheathing where the panel will be covered or where appearance is not critical. Sanded plywood provides a smoother face for visible painted work, while overlaid panels add a manufactured surface intended for particular durability or finish needs. These categories are not interchangeable: a smooth face does not automatically provide the structural rating or exposure classification your project requires.

Panel choice Surface and likely role Checks before purchase
Unsanded structural sheathing Rougher face for covered construction or locations where appearance is secondary APA trademark, span rating, performance category, exposure classification and support spacing
Sanded plywood Smoother face for visible cabinetry, furniture or painted surfaces Face/back grade, actual veneer quality, structural rating if the panel carries load, and finish compatibility
Overlaid plywood Manufactured face for a smoother or more durable surface requirement Specified overlay, bond/exposure classification, edge treatment and the finish system approved for that surface

When painting, plan for the face and the edges separately. The edge exposes end grain and veneer layers, so it may need a compatible sealer and additional preparation specified by the coating manufacturer. Avoid sanding aggressively enough to cut through a thin face veneer.

11. Cut with a sharp blade and a stable setup

A suitable, sharp saw blade and well-supported sheet reduce vibration and veneer breakout. Support the panel close to the cut, keep the saw base flat, and lay out the cut so the blade exits on the side where minor chipping is least visible for your tool and setup.

Scoring the cut line or applying tape over it can help reduce veneer chipping. These methods improve the odds of a clean edge but do not guarantee one, and the available guidance does not establish a universally best tooth count or blade model. Make a test cut in scrap from the same sheet when the edge will be visible.

  • Works with Latex Paint, Oil-Based Paint & Stains – Premium synthetic filaments hold more paint, reduce streaks, and provide a clean finish with latex paints, oil coatings, and wood stains.

Follow the saw manufacturer’s operating instructions and authoritative safety guidance for cutting engineered wood. The correct dust and eye protection, guarding and work-holding procedure depend on the tool and task.

12. Fasten carefully near edges and follow the structural schedule

Plywood edges can split or delaminate when fasteners are driven too close, oversized or at an awkward angle. In woodworking situations where the source guidance calls for it, drill a pilot hole before driving the fastener and keep the hole aligned with the panel. Clamp or support the work so the sheet does not flex while you fasten it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Structural fastening is different from cabinet assembly. Use the project’s specified fastener type, diameter, spacing, penetration and edge distances; do not replace an engineered schedule with a convenient nail or screw pattern. Seal or protect cut edges only when the specified coating and assembly require it, because an incompatible treatment can interfere with the finish or bond.

13. Store and handle plywood to limit moisture movement

Cross-lamination improves dimensional stability, but it cannot prevent movement when one face absorbs moisture faster than the other. Carry large sheets with enough support to avoid flexing, and keep them protected from rain, standing water and ground moisture while they acclimate to the job conditions.

Use the manufacturer’s handling and storage instructions for the particular panel. Keep stacks supported and as evenly loaded as practical, and avoid leaving a sheet in a position that permanently stresses it. Before installation, reject panels with delamination, severe warp or damage that compromises the marked use; do not assume paint will restore structural integrity.

How to choose a sheet for common DIY projects

Painted interior cabinet or furniture panel

  1. Decide which face will be visible and select a sanded or overlaid surface appropriate to the finish.
  2. Check the face and back grades on the sheet and inspect for repairs or defects that will show through paint.
  3. Confirm the performance category and structural rating if shelves, seats or other parts carry a load.
  4. Prepare edges and apply primer and paint according to the coating manufacturer’s system.

Wall, roof or floor sheathing

  1. Start with the plans, local code and required support spacing.
  2. Choose a panel whose span rating and strength-axis orientation match those supports.
  3. Verify the APA trademark, performance category, exposure classification and fastening schedule on the actual sheet.
  4. Use Exposure 1 only where the completed assembly will not receive long-term weather; select Exterior when the design calls for sustained exposure.

Permanently exposed outdoor panel

  1. Specify an Exterior-classified panel rather than assuming a product called CDX is weatherproof.
  2. Design drainage, flashing, ventilation and edge protection so water is not trapped.
  3. Confirm that the face accepts the planned paint, stain or overlay and that the coating system covers vulnerable edges as required.
  4. Inspect and maintain the finish and joints; bond classification alone is not decay protection.

A final buying checklist

  • What will be visible: an unsanded structural face, a sanded face or an overlaid surface?
  • What loads and support spacing apply, and which way must the strength axis run?
  • What performance category or thickness does the code, plan or manufacturer require?
  • Will the panel see only a construction delay, or repeated wetting and drying?
  • Does the stamp say Exposure 1 or Exterior, and is that classification suitable?
  • What fasteners, edge distances and installation schedule are specified?
  • Can the face and edges accept the selected paint or other finish?
  • Are the sheets flat enough and free from delamination or damage for the intended use?
