The practical choice is between a fully custom chair and a monogram-only service: confirm the chair dimensions, upholstery or leather, finish, embroidery design, thread colour, placement, who supplies the material or furniture, and what care and delivery terms apply before you order.

What “embroidered” and “monogrammed” dining chairs mean
A monogram combines initials into a decorative symbol. J. Wilkinson Chair Company defines a monogram as “a decorative design made by overlapping and intertwining letters to form a new symbol.” On a dining chair, those initials can be stitched into the upholstered back, a removable chairback, or another agreed panel.

The two terms are not interchangeable when you are specifying a piece. A monogram is lettering arranged as a symbol; a decorative embroidery is an image or pattern. Decide which you want before discussing dimensions, because a large motif and a small set of initials need different usable areas and visual spacing.
Choose between a new custom chair and a chair you already own

J. Wilkinson’s “Start Here” guide describes a new-chair process in which you select a collection and style, then customize the finish, fabric, monogram, thread and initials. The guide says you can share the design or place an order, with an order confirmation expected within 24 hours; verify that workflow because web policies and timelines can change.
The same maker separately advertises a “monogram only” service for existing chairs but says it does not provide upholstery services for those products. That means “we can monogram your chair” does not necessarily mean “we can rebuild, re-cover or repair it.” Ask for a written scope covering the exact chair, upholstery panel and fabric.

Specify the chair before you specify the initials
Side chair, armchair or carver
A side chair has no arms and usually presents a narrower back. An armchair or carver occupies more table width and changes the sightline to the embroidery when people are seated. Give the maker the overall height, width, depth, seat height and arm height, not just a collection name. If replacing chairs around an existing table, measure the clearance between legs and the underside of the tabletop as well.

Inside back versus outside back
J. Wilkinson uses “inside back” for the front-facing upholstered side of the chair—the surface diners see when seated. The “outside back” is the rear-facing side visible from behind the chair. Put the intended side in the order paperwork and mark a photograph if necessary. A phrase such as “back placement” is ambiguous in a dining room where chairs are viewed from both directions.
Panel shape and usable embroidery area
Provide a front and rear photograph, a side view, and measurements of the flat area where the design will sit. Curves, seams, welting, buttons, pleats and openings can limit the stitching field. Ask for a scale drawing or digital proof showing the design’s outside dimensions, distance from the top edge and relationship to seams before production.
Choose fabric, leather, finish and thread together
Upholstery and leather
Custom makers may let you select upholstery fabric or leather and, in some cases, supply your own material. J. Wilkinson calls customer’s own material “COM” and says it is happy to use a customer’s fabric. Confirm the required yardage, shipping address, labeling, testing and what happens if the material is unsuitable or arrives damaged.
Leather, velvet, linen, performance textiles and patterned cloth behave differently under a needle. Ask whether the chosen material needs a stabilizer, whether a nap or repeat must be aligned, and whether seams or backing prevent hooping. A provider’s approval of a fabric is not an independent durability certification.
Performance claims
J. Wilkinson defines “performance fabric” as fabric that is “extremely durable, easy to clean, and can withstand the wear and tear of daily use.” That is the maker’s definition, not a comparative laboratory result. Request the fabric’s actual cleaning code, abrasion or stain-testing information if available, and any restrictions around solvent cleaners, bleach, heat or wet extraction.

Wood finish and thread colour
Thread can match, contrast or deliberately echo the wood finish and surrounding textile. Request physical or photographed samples in the room’s lighting; a screen preview cannot reliably show metallic, tonal or highly saturated thread. Keep the approved thread reference with the order, especially when adding chairs later.

Monogrammed initials
Specify the letters exactly as they should appear, including order, punctuation, capitalization and any middle initial. Ask whether the maker uses a traditional three-letter arrangement or a straight line, and approve the type style and finished height. A proof should show the letters at actual size on the selected panel, not merely as a small screen icon.
Decorative embroidery
For a motif, define the reference artwork, orientation, repeat (if any), finished width and height, and whether the design should be centered or offset. Beaumont & Fletcher’s Elvira example demonstrates that a hand-embroidered Art Deco design can be resized for a dining chair and offered in different colours and background materials. “Adaptable” does not mean every detail remains identical at every scale, so ask which line weights or details will change.
Front, inside-back or outside-back placement
Front-facing embroidery is the most immediately visible to the diner. Outside-back embroidery is read by people entering or leaving the room and can create a coordinated view across a table. Some chairbacks can carry a design on both sides, but that adds material, labor and alignment questions. Have the maker label each view in the proof and confirm whether the quoted price covers one side or two.
How to order a custom embroidered chair
- Record the room constraints. Measure table height, available width per place, doorway and stair access, and the clearance needed for arms. Note whether chairs must stack, slide fully under the table or tolerate daily family use.
- Select a chair style. Choose a side chair, armchair or another collection model, then request the manufacturer’s current dimensions and construction details.
- Choose the finish and cover. Approve wood finish, upholstery or leather, pattern direction, and whether you will provide COM material. Get written material requirements before shipping anything.
- Define the embroidery. Supply initials or artwork, desired thread colours, finished size, and front/inside-back/outside-back placement. Ask for a scale proof with seam and edge clearances.
- Confirm the production scope. For a new chair, ask what is included in upholstery, embroidery, packaging and delivery. For an existing chair, identify whether the provider needs the whole chair, a removable panel or only fabric.
- Request the current quote and schedule. Have the quote state quantity, currency, taxes or shipping assumptions, lead time, deposit, balance timing and what can trigger a change order.
- Approve the final specification in writing. Attach the drawing, dimensions, fabric reference, thread reference, letter order and placement. Keep the confirmation and any agreed tolerances.
- Inspect on delivery. Check that the chair count, dimensions, finish, fabric orientation, initials and placement match the approved specification. Photograph packaging and any transit damage before signing a delivery receipt if the carrier permits exceptions.
J. Wilkinson’s Baker collection page states that orders for more than six chairs require a custom quote. When that page was crawled, it displayed starting prices of $3,348 for a Baker Arm and $3,117 for a Baker Side. Those are collection-specific, maker-published starting prices—not a market average—and can change; obtain a current quote before budgeting.

Questions to ask when personalizing a chair you own
- Can you embroider this exact fabric, leather or removable panel, and have you worked on a comparable weave or nap?
- Do you need the complete chair, a seat/back panel, or a separate piece of customer-supplied material?
- Is upholstery removal, re-covering, foam replacement or repair included? If not, who performs it?
- What minimum flat area, seam clearance and backing support does the design require?
- Will the embroidery be centered from the chair frame, the visible panel or the table-facing sightline?
- How will you match an existing thread, fabric dye lot or wood finish, and what variation should I expect?
- What happens if the fabric cannot be hooped, the panel is damaged during removal, or the design proof is rejected?
- Who pays for transport, insurance and return shipping, and how is damage documented?
Custom furniture naturally varies. J. Wilkinson’s FAQ notes that slight differences in wood grain, finish, fabric colour and texture, monograms, dimensions, placement and composition are characteristic of custom work. Treat the approved specification as a target with stated tolerances rather than assuming factory-identical repetition.
Care, cleaning and expected wear
There is no universal cleaning method for embroidered dining chairs. The correct routine depends on the fabric or leather, thread, backing and finish. Obtain fabric-specific instructions at handover and keep them with the chair records.
- Blot spills promptly with the method approved for the cover; do not assume water or a household spray is safe.
- Vacuum using the maker-approved attachment and low suction, avoiding snagging raised stitches, fringe or loose threads.
- Do not apply bleach, solvents, heat or steam unless the written care instructions expressly permit them.
- Ask how to treat a pulled stitch, dye transfer, grease mark or food residue before attempting a repair.
- Use place settings, chair pads or protective covers only if they do not rub the embroidery or compress the design.
The available maker pages do not establish comparative tests for stain resistance, abrasion, embroidery life span or cleaning performance. A “performance” label should therefore be read alongside the supplier’s documented test information and care limitations, not as a guarantee of a particular number of years.

Compare like with like: a quote for one embroidered front panel is not equivalent to one covering two sides, and a new chair is not equivalent to embroidery on a customer-owned frame. If a provider will not state what is included, ask for a revised itemization before committing.

Common pitfalls and practical fixes
The design is beautiful but unreadable
Fine lettering can disappear into a patterned fabric or become crowded near a seam. Increase contrast, simplify the artwork or move it to a flatter panel. Approve an actual-size proof viewed from the normal seated distance.

The “back” was embroidered on the wrong side
Use the terms inside back (front-facing) and outside back (rear-facing), add a labeled photograph and state whether one or both sides are included.
The existing chair cannot be accepted as delivered
Send photographs and measurements before transport. Confirm whether the maker needs a removable panel, whether upholstery removal is your responsibility and who bears risk in transit.
Additional chairs do not match the first order
Keep fabric, thread, finish and embroidery files or proofs from the original order. Ask whether a later batch will use the same dye lot and whether the maker can reproduce the placement within the original tolerance.

Ask which events trigger a change—material substitution, artwork revision, extra embroidery sides, repairs or delivery access—and require written approval for any additional charge.
A concise specification checklist
- Chair type, collection and final dimensions.
- Wood species or finish and acceptable natural variation.
- Upholstery fabric or leather, pattern direction and COM responsibility.
- Initials or motif artwork, type style or design reference, and finished size.
- Thread colours and whether embroidery is on the front, inside back, outside back or both.
- Scale drawing showing seams, edges, buttons and clearances.
- Care instructions for the exact cover and thread combination.
- Quantity, current itemized price, taxes, shipping, deposit, lead time and confirmation timing.
- Custom-order cancellation, return, damage and variation terms.
Use this checklist whether you are commissioning a single statement chair or outfitting a full dining table. It turns a visual idea into a specification a maker can quote and you can inspect.
