GECA-certified furniture is furniture assessed against an applicable Good Environmental Choice Australia (GECA) standard for environmental impacts, human health, social conditions and fit-for-purpose performance. In Australia, the current furniture standards are Furniture, Fittings, Foam & Mattresses Level A (FFFM-A GEN 3.0) and Furniture & Fittings Level B (FF-B GEN 3.0). The label applies to the exact certified product or model, not automatically to every item sold by a certified supplier.

What GECA certification means for furniture
GECA is an Australian ecolabel used to assess products against published criteria rather than relying on a supplier’s unverified “green” description. For furniture, the criteria consider impacts across relevant life stages: raw-material extraction, constituent materials, manufacturing, the use phase and disposal. They can cover coatings, textiles, adhesives, hazardous treatments, and energy and water management during production.
The assessment is broader than recycled content. Depending on the applicable standard and product type, it can address material selection, chemical restrictions, indoor-air emissions, supply-chain practices, social conditions and whether the finished item performs as claimed. A certificate therefore gives you a defined set of verified claims, but it does not mean that every environmental attribute is maximised or that the product is suitable for every project.
GECA’s Furniture & Fittings Level B page describes its assurance this way: “When a product is certified against GECA’s Furniture and Fittings (Level B) standard, consumers can be sure that the product has been assessed to meet environmental, human health and social impact criteria, while also proving that it performs as promised.” The statement applies to products certified against that standard, not to a whole brand or an unlisted range.

Which GECA furniture standards are current?
GECA’s standards index lists two current furniture-related standards. They are separate scopes, so the name and version on a certificate matter when you compare products.

| Standard | Scope indicated by GECA | How to use it when comparing products |
|---|---|---|
| FFFM-A GEN 3.0 Furniture, Fittings, Foam & Mattresses Level A |
Level A furniture and fittings, with foam and mattress products included within the stated scope. | Record the exact standard and GEN 3.0 version shown for the model. GECA’s update announcement reports revised fabric and adhesive requirements, supply-chain and human-rights criteria, and stricter emissions requirements, especially for formaldehyde in Level A. |
| FF-B GEN 3.0 Furniture & Fittings Level B |
Furniture and fittings covered by the Level B criteria. | Check that the model is certified to FF-B GEN 3.0 rather than assuming a Level A claim. The Level B aims include recovery, reuse, recycling and responsible disposal, hazardous-material controls, supply-chain conditions and emissions limits. |
“Level A” and “Level B” are names of GECA standards, not a simple good-to-better consumer ranking. A product’s appropriate level depends on its category, construction and the certification route used. Compare like with like and read the operative standard for the product rather than inferring performance from the level name alone.
Furniture categories covered by GECA
The standards index identifies a wide range of residential, commercial and institutional furniture. The category tells you where to look; it does not certify every product in that category.
| Category listed under the furniture standards | Typical examples to verify |
|---|---|
| Chairs and stools | Home, visitor, task, dining and commercial seating |
| Desks and tables | Work desks, meeting tables, dining tables and shared-use surfaces |
| Educational, school and library furniture | Student seating, study tables, shelving and library fittings |
| Foam and mattresses | Mattress and foam components within the relevant Level A scope |
| Lounges, sofas and beds | Residential and commercial upholstered seating and sleeping furniture |
| Office furniture | Workplace desks, chairs, storage and associated fittings |
| Outdoor furniture | Exterior chairs, tables and other outdoor-use items |
| Partitions | Space-dividing systems used in offices or institutional interiors |
| Shelving and storage | Bookcases, cupboards, filing and general storage units |
| Workstation systems | Modular desks, screens and integrated workstation ranges |
A listing for “office furniture” or “chairs” is a category description, not evidence that a particular model carries a certificate. Certification is product-specific, so retain the model name, configuration and certificate details that you checked.

Materials, coatings and adhesives
Furniture can contain wood or fibre panels, metal, plastics, foams, fabrics, coatings and glues. GECA’s criteria address the potential impacts of those inputs and the treatments used on them. The exact thresholds and documentation depend on the standard and product construction. A certified chair, for example, may be assessed differently from a solid-wood table or a mattress.

Human health and indoor-air emissions
Emissions from furniture materials can affect indoor environments, especially in tightly sealed rooms. The standards include restrictions on formaldehyde and particulate emissions to air. GECA’s announcement of the GEN 3.0 updates specifically notes stricter emissions requirements, with particular emphasis on formaldehyde in FFFM-A. Do not transfer a requirement from one standard or product type to another; use the certificate and current criteria for the item you are buying.
Hazardous substances and heavy metals
Level B’s stated aims include preventing specified hazardous materials and heavy metals. This is a controlled-chemicals requirement, not a promise that a product contains no chemicals at all. Ask for the relevant declaration if a project has additional restrictions, such as healthcare, childcare or allergy-sensitive requirements.
Supply chains and social conditions
GECA’s current updates include supply-chain and human-rights criteria. The Level B aims refer to fair pay, equal opportunity and safe working conditions through supply chains, as well as avoiding illegally harvested wood and fibre. These provisions matter when a product’s environmental story depends on timber, fibres or complex subcontracting.

Resource use and end of life
The standards consider manufacturing inputs such as energy and water management. Level B also aims to encourage recovery, reuse, recycling and responsible disposal of unwanted products and packaging. Those aims do not guarantee that a local recycler accepts every material. Confirm the manufacturer’s take-back, disassembly or repair arrangements and your council or contractor’s actual capabilities.

Performance and durability
Environmental information is useful only if the furniture works in its intended setting. GECA’s certification approach includes fit-for-purpose performance. Compare load ratings, dimensions, ergonomics, outdoor exposure limits, cleaning instructions and expected use with your specification. A lower-impact product that fails early can create replacement impacts and costs.
How to verify a GECA-certified product
Use GECA’s live product directory as a starting point, then verify the purchase details. Directory entries are leads to named products, not a complete market survey or a substitute for checking the certificate.
- Write down the exact identity. Capture the manufacturer, product or range name, model code, size, finish, upholstery and configuration. A workstation range may contain several materially different models.
- Open the current GECA directory entry. Search the directory for the exact model rather than a broad category such as “chair” or “desk.” Examples that appear in the directory include NOHO MOVE CHAIR, Khyn Chair, Vox Chair and Life Chair, along with workstation and table ranges; their presence is a prompt to inspect the individual entry.
- Check the standard and version. Record whether the entry cites FFFM-A GEN 3.0 or FF-B GEN 3.0, and read the stated product scope. Do not treat an older version, a different standard or a supplier-level statement as interchangeable.
- Confirm certification status. Check that the certificate or directory status is current at the time you order. If the entry is unclear, ask the supplier for the current certificate covering the exact model and configuration.
- Match the sales listing to the certified item. Retail listings can use collection names, aliases or bundles. Compare photographs, dimensions, materials and model codes so you do not attach a certificate to a similar-looking but different product.
- Save evidence for your records. Keep the directory page or certificate reference, the date checked, the model code and the supplier quotation. This is particularly important for commercial fit-outs, leases and projects that require documentation.
Certification can change when a model, factory, materials or certificate period changes. Recheck the entry before repeating a GECA claim in a specification, tender or marketing statement.

Once both products are verified, the label is the beginning of the comparison rather than the end. Use a written matrix so a lower price or attractive finish does not hide a mismatch with the project.

| Decision factor | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Standard and scope | Which of FFFM-A GEN 3.0 or FF-B GEN 3.0 applies? Does the certificate cover this exact model and configuration? |
| Setting and fit | Is it for a home, office, school, library, hospitality venue or outdoors? Are dimensions, clearances, ergonomics and load ratings suitable? |
| Materials and finishes | What timber, board, metal, foam, fabric, coating and adhesive systems are used? Are cleaning or moisture requirements compatible with the space? |
| Health criteria | What emissions and hazardous-material requirements apply under the operative standard? Are additional project limits needed? |
| Supply chain | Does the applicable standard address the timber or fibre source, labour conditions and other supply-chain risks relevant to your procurement policy? |
| Durability and repair | Can covers, casters, hinges or other wear parts be replaced? What warranty period and repair service are offered? |
| End of life | Can the item be disassembled, reused or recycled locally? Does the supplier provide take-back or disposal guidance? |
| Availability and price | Is the exact certified model in stock, and what is the delivered price in your location? GECA’s sources do not establish a universal price or availability. |
Warranty details deserve special attention. GECA’s update announcement notes changes to warranty-period requirements in Level A, so do not quote a generic warranty number without checking the operative standard and the supplier’s current terms.
Using GECA in Australian projects and procurement
The Australian Government Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water supplier guidance identifies GECA as a relevant ecolabel for furniture, fittings and equipment. Its examples include office desks and chairs, lighting, shelving, storage units and beds. This is procurement context: it indicates that buyers may seek third-party certification when increasing the sustainability of supplied goods.
The guidance is not a universal government endorsement, a requirement that every buyer use GECA, or proof that every product in one of those categories is certified. A tender should state the evidence required, the accepted standard and version, and whether equivalent third-party schemes are allowed. For a GECA requirement, request the certificate for each specified model and define how substitutions will be approved.

- Assuming a certified supplier certifies its whole catalogue. Verify the model, not just the company name.
- Using a category page as proof. “Outdoor furniture” or “office chair” describes scope; it is not a certificate.
- Ignoring the version. GEN 3.0 requirements should not be silently replaced with an older or different standard.
- Calling a product “non-toxic” or “zero impact.” GECA assesses defined criteria; it does not support unlimited environmental or health claims.
- Confusing certification with recycled content. A GECA certificate does not by itself state that a fixed percentage of the product is recycled.
- Forgetting the configuration. Fabric, foam, finish, frame and size changes can affect what is covered.
- Skipping the use phase. Check cleaning, maintenance, exposure and load requirements so the item remains serviceable.
- Assuming recycling is automatic. Ask who will separate and accept the materials when the furniture is removed.
A practical checklist before you order
- Define the room, users, exposure, dimensions and performance requirements.
- Shortlist products in the relevant GECA category.
- Find each exact model in the current GECA directory.
- Record the certificate status, standard and version.
- Match the certificate to the quoted configuration and finish.
- Request material, emissions, warranty, repair and end-of-life information where your project needs it.
- Compare delivered cost and availability; neither is established by GECA certification.
- Save the evidence and recheck it if the supplier proposes a substitution.
Bottom line: what a GECA label can and cannot tell you
For Australian furniture, GECA certification is a useful, product-level signal that defined environmental, human-health, social and performance criteria have been assessed under a named standard. The most reliable buying decision combines that evidence with a check of the exact model, current certificate, intended use, durability, repair options, price, availability and local end-of-life pathway. Treat the directory as a verification tool, not as permission to generalise a certification claim across an entire range.
