The reliable way to choose decorative products is to prove two things separately, then evaluate them together: the product must meet the room’s functional demands, and its sustainability claims must apply to the exact model, material, market, and project requirement. Start with traffic, moisture, sunlight, cleaning, safety, maintenance, and expected service life. Then compare emissions, material health, lifecycle impacts, sourcing, durability, repair, and end-of-life evidence.

No single “green” label answers every question. A third-party environmental product declaration (EPD), an indoor-air emissions test, a material-health disclosure, and a responsible-sourcing certification each cover different attributes. The framework below helps you build a defensible shortlist for paint, finishes, furniture, textiles, lighting, and decorative accessories without sacrificing performance or design.
1. Define the use case before you compare sustainability claims
Write the performance brief first. A product that is excellent in a low-traffic bedroom may fail in a restaurant corridor, healthcare waiting area, humid bathroom, or sun-exposed storefront. Sustainability evidence is useful only after the product is suitable for its intended service.

Record the exposure conditions
- Traffic and impact: note expected footfall, rolling loads, abrasion, knocks, and whether the product is for residential or commercial use.
- Moisture: identify splash zones, condensation, wash-down cleaning, outdoor exposure, and seasonal humidity.
- Sunlight and heat: document direct ultraviolet exposure, heat near glazing or luminaires, and the risk of fading, yellowing, warping, or adhesive failure.
- Cleaning: specify chemicals, disinfectants, scrubbing frequency, stain resistance, and whether maintenance staff will follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Safety: include slip resistance, flammability, structural stability, tip-over protection, electrical requirements, and accessibility where relevant.
- Service life: set a realistic replacement interval and identify whether a shorter-lived decorative item is acceptable for the project.
- Appearance: define color, gloss, texture, pattern, light output, dimensions, and acceptable variation before sustainability comparisons begin.
- Market and timing: state the country, applicable code or specification, delivery date, and whether replacement parts must remain available locally.
Turn each requirement into a pass/fail criterion. Do not allow an attractive sustainability credential to compensate for a product that cannot survive the use conditions.
2. Use a comparison matrix instead of a single “green score”
Score products by evidence category, but keep the categories separate. Combining unrelated attributes into one number can hide a serious weakness, such as excellent recycled content paired with poor durability or verified low emissions paired with no repair route.
| Decision axis | Questions to ask | Evidence to request |
|---|---|---|
| Fit-for-use performance | Does the product meet the applicable safety, wear, moisture, light, acoustic, or electrical requirement? | Technical data sheet, test report, standard, warranty, installation instructions, and maintenance schedule. |
| Indoor-air emissions and material health | What is emitted during use, and what ingredients or substances are disclosed or restricted? | Product-specific emissions report, material-health disclosure, ingredient restrictions, and current certificate. |
| Lifecycle impact | Are manufacturing, transport, use, and end-of-life impacts quantified? | Third-party verified EPD, global-warming-potential (GWP) data, or a lifecycle assessment with defined scope and life-cycle assumptions. |
| Provenance and sourcing | Where did the material come from, and are labor or forest claims independently checked? | Chain-of-custody record, sourcing policy, and certification covering the actual material or component. |
| Durability and maintenance | How long should the product last, how is it cleaned, and which parts wear out first? | Durability test, expected service life, cleaning instructions, repair manual, and replacement-part list. |
| Repair, reuse, and end of life | Can the product be repaired, disassembled, reused, recycled, or safely disposed of? | Disassembly information, take-back or reuse plan, material separation guidance, and packaging details. |
| Cost and availability | Is it obtainable in the project market at the required quantity and lead time? | Current quotation, lead time, minimum order, spare-part availability, and regional documentation. |
Record “not stated” when a comparable value is not disclosed. That is more useful than guessing or treating silence as proof of poor performance.
3. Understand what each sustainability document actually covers
Environmental product declarations (EPDs)
An EPD reports quantified lifecycle impacts for a defined product, declared unit, manufacturing period, and set of assumptions. It is especially useful when a project requires GWP or another lifecycle metric. An EPD does not automatically establish low emissions, healthy ingredients, ethical sourcing, or superior durability. Check the product name, model, manufacturing site, validity dates, PCR (product category rule), declared unit, and whether the EPD is third-party verified.
Where a project specification requires an EPD or GWP disclosure, a multi-attribute label does not necessarily replace it. Gensler’s Product Sustainability Standards 2.0 FAQ makes this distinction explicitly: an applicable EPD remains necessary where the requirement calls for one, even when another certification satisfies different criteria.
Indoor-air emissions testing
Emissions tests measure substances released into indoor air under a defined protocol. Gensler lists acceptable methodologies including CDPH Standard Method v1.2 or later, ANSI/BIFMA M7.1-2016 or later, AgBB, EN 16516, EN 717-1:2004 or later, and ISO 16000. Confirm which method, chamber conditions, product age, and pass criteria apply to your project.

A “low-VOC” marketing phrase is not itself a test result. Ask for the report or current certification for the finished product, not merely a raw-material declaration or a supplier’s general policy.

Material-health documentation addresses ingredients, substances of concern, and disclosure thresholds. It answers a different question from an EPD, which focuses on lifecycle impacts. Check whether the disclosure covers the complete finished product or only a component, adhesive, coating, textile, or substrate. Review version, expiration, disclosure percentage, and any exclusions.
Single-attribute and multi-attribute certifications
Monmade distinguishes single-attribute evidence, such as a forest-sourcing certification for wood or paper, from broader evidence such as an EPD, health product declaration (HPD), or lifecycle analysis. A single-attribute certification can be valuable without proving every other sustainability characteristic. Conversely, a multi-attribute program still has a defined scope and may not cover every component.
Always ask five scope questions:
- Is the credential for the ingredient, raw material, component, fabric, or complete finished product?
- Does it identify the exact model, colorway, finish, or size being specified?
- Which country, factory, and market does it cover?
- What standard, version, validity period, and verification body apply?
- Are accessories, backing, hardware, packaging, and installation materials included or excluded?
4. Compare performance and evidence by product category
Paints, primers, varnishes, and coatings
Begin with substrate compatibility, coverage, washability, gloss, color retention, drying time, and resistance to the project’s cleaning and moisture conditions. A coating that needs extra coats, frequent touch-ups, or early replacement can have a larger practical footprint than a more durable product with a higher purchase price.
For European projects, Commission Decision (EU) 2025/2607, adopted 17 December 2025, establishes EU Ecolabel criteria for decorative paints, varnishes, related products, performance coatings, and water-based aerosol spray paints. The decorative-paint group includes indoor and outdoor paints, varnishes, woodstains, and primers whose primary purpose is decorative characteristics for buildings and associated structures. The criteria address lifecycle impacts, material- and energy-efficient production, emissions to water and air during manufacture, volatile compounds during application, hazardous substances, product-use efficiency, and handling of unused product.

The European Commission states in recital 8: “the revised EU Ecolabel criteria for decorative paints, varnishes, and related products, performance coatings and related products, and water-based aerosol spray paints should aim to promote products that have limited environmental impact throughout their life cycle, which are produced using material-efficient and energy-efficient processes.”

- COASTERS with HOLDER SET: 6 pcs acacia wood coasters and a black metal coaster holder that keep the coasters easily available and organized
- ABSORBENT & LIP DESIGN: The lip design prevents liquid run off, while raised edges keep any water from overflowing onto the table surface
- ACACIA WOOD COASTERS: 0.6 inches thick construction provides exceptional durability and craftsmanship with excellent absorbent qualities
- VERSATILE SIZE: 4 inch diameter round table coasters accommodate most mugs, cups, glasses, and drinking containers
- DECORATIVE COASTERS: These farmhouse wooden coasters not only look great, but they sure keep your furniture dry and safe. They sure do decorate up your furniture, great as coffee table decor, dining table accessories, coffee table centerpiece, or rustic home decorations.
Do not turn that policy into a blanket claim that every low-VOC paint is safe or sustainable. Verify the exact label, technical data sheet, current certificate, coverage rate, preparation requirements, and suitability for the surface and exposure. EU criteria are not a universal standard for projects in the United States or Canada; check the rules and specification for the actual market.
Furniture
Separate structural and user safety from environmental credentials. For commercial furniture, ANSI/BIFMA tests address safety, durability, and performance. BIFMA LEVEL evaluates environmental and social impacts, including energy, materials, and human and ecosystem health. Confirm the test level, product configuration, and whether the certificate covers the complete item or only a family or component.
Inspect the construction before comparing labels: can upholstery covers, cushions, casters, glides, handles, hinges, power modules, or lamps be replaced? Are common fasteners used instead of permanent composites? Can a damaged panel be changed without discarding the frame? Ask for cleaning instructions and replacement-part pricing, because maintainability often determines real service life.
Textiles, rugs, wallpaper, and acoustic surfaces
Check abrasion, pilling, seam strength, colorfastness to light and cleaning, dimensional stability, and flame-performance requirements. A textile certification may apply to the fabric only, not the upholstered chair, foam, backing, adhesive, or completed panel. Room & Board’s standards explainer uses this kind of scope distinction; confirm details with the program owner and the manufacturer’s current certificate.
For wallcoverings and acoustic products, request installation-adhesive information, removal method, substrate compatibility, and whether layers can be separated at renovation. A recyclable face fabric is not equivalent to a recyclable composite assembly.
Lighting and decorative accessories
Evaluate electrical safety, heat management, ingress protection, glare, color quality, driver life, and replacement options before sustainability claims. Ask whether the light source, driver, cord, shade, diffuser, or mounting hardware can be replaced independently. For decorative objects, document breakage risk, repairability, packaging, and whether materials can be separated for reuse or recycling.
5. Check durability, maintenance, and circularity as one system
Monmade’s circularity framework includes durability and an end-of-life plan. Apply that logic to every product, not just furniture. A durable item that cannot be repaired may still become waste after one failed component; a modular item with a short-lived finish may need frequent replacement.
Ask the supplier these practical questions
- What component is most likely to fail first?
- Are replacement covers, cushions, drivers, hinges, hardware, or touch-up materials stocked?
- For how many years will parts and technical support be available?
- Can local technicians repair the item, or must it be shipped to the manufacturer?
- What cleaning products, dilution, temperature, and frequency are permitted?
- Can the item be refinished, reupholstered, rewired, or recoated?
- Can materials be separated with ordinary tools at the end of use?
- Is there a documented take-back, resale, donation, recycling, or refurbishment route in the project region?
Keep written answers with the submittal. An informal promise that a part “should be available” is not the same as a published replacement-part policy.
6. Verify a claim before it enters the specification
- Identify the exact product. Record manufacturer, model, finish, color, size, factory, and intended market. Do not rely on a product-family name when variants use different materials.
- Collect current documents. Request the technical data sheet, safety data sheet where relevant, emissions report, EPD, health disclosure, certificate, installation guide, cleaning instructions, warranty, and end-of-life information.
- Match scope. Check whether each document covers the finished product, a component, or a raw material. Note exclusions such as packaging, adhesive, hardware, backing, or optional accessories.
- Check dates and versions. Record issue date, expiration date, standard edition, verification body, and manufacturing site. Replace expired certificates before approval.
- Check the project requirement. Compare the evidence with the jurisdiction, client standard, rating-system credit, fire or electrical code, and procurement rules. Gensler says its GPS Standards v2.0 went live in specifications in June 2025 and currently covers the United States, Canada, the European Union, and the United Kingdom; projects elsewhere need their own applicable requirements.
- Verify the listing. UL SPOT is a searchable directory of products, components, and materials with UL sustainability certifications, including GREENGUARD, ECOLOGO, EPD, environmental-claim validation, and product-carbon-footprint verification listings. Use its filters by standard, manufacturer, and product to discover candidates, then open the current listing and certificate.
- Document unresolved gaps. Mark missing values as “not stated,” assign an owner, and set a decision deadline. Do not convert an unverified claim into a specification requirement.
7. Use directories and artisan collections for discovery, not automatic approval
Directories shorten the search, but they do not replace product-level verification. A listing can change, expire, or cover only one configuration. Save the certificate and product page used for approval, and recheck them before purchase if the project has a long procurement period.
Monmade presents an artisan collection for the built environment spanning lighting, furniture and hardware, textiles and wallpaper, art systems and prints, and tableware and barware. Its stated criteria touch local sourcing, recycled, reclaimed, or bio-based materials, health, circularity, and third-party verified claims. Treat the collection as a sourcing lead: request evidence for the exact item, confirm quantities and lead times, and determine whether custom work changes the documented materials or performance.
8. Balance price, availability, and lifecycle value
Compare delivered and maintained cost, not just purchase price. Include preparation, installation, extra coats, replacement parts, cleaning labor, expected downtime, shipping, packaging, and disposal. A product with a higher initial price may be preferable when its service life, repair route, or coverage efficiency reduces replacement and labor.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Availability is part of sustainability. A product that cannot be supplied in the project region may require air freight, substitutions, or a late-stage redesign. Ask for regional stock, minimum order quantities, lead time, spare-part location, and the validity of quoted documentation. If a custom finish or artisan product is selected, require a production sample and confirm that the final batch will use the same documented materials.

9. Paint-specific decision path for a 2026 specification
- Define the surface and exposure: plaster, gypsum board, wood, metal, masonry, exterior cladding, wet area, or high-touch zone.
- Set performance thresholds: coverage, opacity, scrub resistance, sheen, adhesion, stain resistance, drying time, and color retention.
- Check emissions and substances: obtain the finished-product emissions evidence and review hazardous-substance restrictions relevant to the market.
- Calculate efficient use: compare stated coverage and number of coats under the same substrate-preparation assumptions.
- Plan unused product: specify return, donation, reuse, or compliant disposal for leftover paint; do not pour it into drains.
- Confirm the applicable label: if using EU Ecolabel criteria, verify the current certificate for the exact product. For US or Canadian work, check the project’s required emissions method and local rules separately.
This process prevents a common error: selecting a product because its marketing copy says “eco” or “low VOC” while overlooking coverage, surface compatibility, hazardous-substance rules, or disposal.
10. Understand the 2026 policy direction without overstating it
The European Commission’s 2026 staff working document describes the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) as a framework that can set product-specific requirements for durability, reusability, resource use, and better sustainability information. Its 2025–2030 working-plan priorities include furniture and textiles/apparel.
That is a policy priority, not proof that every furniture or textile product already has an ESPR product rule in force. For a current specification, rely on the rule, delegated act, or certificate that actually applies to the product and date in question.
11. Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Choosing the label first: correct this by writing performance requirements before reviewing credentials.
- Assuming low VOC means harmless: request the actual emissions method, result, and scope; review other ingredients and use conditions.
- Using a component certificate for a finished product: identify every excluded layer, adhesive, backing, and accessory.
- Accepting an old certificate: check validity, model identity, factory, and standard version at submittal and before purchase.
- Treating an EPD as a health certificate: use EPDs for lifecycle impacts and separate documents for emissions and material health.
- Ignoring maintenance: compare cleaning chemicals, labor, touch-up requirements, and replacement parts.
- Specifying a product with no end-of-life route: require disassembly, take-back, reuse, or material-separation information.
- Assuming a directory listing is permanent: save the current certificate and reverify it when the order is placed.
- Inventing a score when data are missing: write “not stated,” ask the supplier, and make the uncertainty visible to the project team.
12. A ready-to-use submittal checklist
For each candidate, keep one record containing:
- Exact manufacturer, model, variant, color, size, factory, and market.
- Intended location and exposure conditions.
- Applicable performance standard and test result.
- Installation, preparation, coverage, cleaning, and maintenance instructions.
- Indoor-air emissions method and report, where required.
- Material-health disclosure and hazardous-substance information.
- EPD, GWP, or lifecycle data when required by the project.
- Responsible-sourcing evidence for relevant materials.
- Durability, warranty, expected service life, repair instructions, and replacement-part policy.
- Reuse, recycling, take-back, packaging, and disposal information.
- Certificate issuer, standard version, issue date, expiration date, and verification status.
- Current price, lead time, minimum order, regional availability, and documentation owner.
Approve a product only when the evidence is sufficient for the project’s actual requirements. If one attribute remains unresolved, record the gap and decide whether it is a tolerable risk, a procurement condition, or a reason to reject the product.
13. The practical selection rule
Choose the product that passes the use-case requirements, has evidence matched to its exact scope, and offers the strongest combination of service life, maintenance, repairability, and end-of-life options within the project’s budget and market. Use labels to verify specific claims, never as a substitute for performance testing or product documentation.
