There is no single batting that is best for every quilt or sewing project. Choose based on the project’s purpose, desired loft and drape, quilting method, laundering needs, fabric, and finished appearance, then follow the exact product’s care and quilting-distance instructions.
Compare fiber, loft, warmth, softness, drape, ease of needling, washability, and resistance to fiber migration or bearding. The package matters: products made from similar fibers can have different construction, care requirements, and quilting limits.
Batting choices at a glance
| Project goal | Option to consider | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Lightweight quilt or baby quilt | Low-loft polyester | Care instructions and quilting distance |
| Fuller, puffier appearance | High-loft polyester | Whether the loft suits your quilting method and design |
| Natural-fiber feel and post-wash texture | Cotton or wool batting | Product-specific shrinkage and washing instructions |
| General-purpose cotton-poly blend | 80/20 cotton-polyester | Loft, drape, and quilting distance; these vary by product |
| Machine quilting | A product with suitable stability, such as a scrim-backed option | Manufacturer guidance for the specific batting |
| Clothing | Breathable cotton, wool, or cotton-poly blend | Drape, breathability, and care instructions |
These are starting points, not universal rules. Fairfield’s product guidance, for example, describes its own Quilter’s 80/20 as low loft and smooth draping, while its Poly-Fil Hi-Loft is intended for a fuller look. Check the specifications of the product you plan to buy.

1. Start with the project and finished look
Consider how the finished item will be used and washed, whether you will hand quilt, machine quilt, or tie it, the quilt’s size and fabric, and the appearance you want. Also compare warmth, softness, drape, ease of needling, washability, and resistance to fiber migration or bearding. Fairfield recommends weighing these factors when selecting batting.
#1 Best Overall
- 1. 4 Size Options: 47"x36" (1 Yard), 47"x72" (2 Yards), 47"x108" (3 Yards), 47"x144" (4 Yards) Available in four practical sizes to meet different project needs. Pre-cut and vacuum-packed for convenience, suitable for everything from small crafts to full-size quilts. Easy to handle and store during sewing or quilting workflows
- 2. 100% Natural Cotton Material – Safe and Breathable Crafted from unbleached, chemical-free cotton. This natural material is soft, low-irritation, and allows air to circulate easily, helping maintain comfort and insulation in handmade textile projects such as quilts, cushions, or bags
- 3. Lightweight, Breathable and Easy to Work With This batting fabric features a low-loft profile that is easy to cut, shape, and layer. The material is odorless and breathable, offering a balance of structure and softness. Supports both hand-sewing and machine quilting techniques
- 4. Versatile Application for DIY and Handmade Projects Can be used in quilting, sewing, stuffing, craft padding, potholders, placemats, bags, wall hangings, and more. Also compatible with crib size, twin size, and king size quilting formats, providing consistent texture and flexibility in use
- 5. Important Usage Note Due to vacuum packaging, the batting may appear compressed upon arrival. Allow at least 48 hours to regain full loft; gentle patting or shaking can help accelerate recovery. Do not pre-wash before quilting. Machine washable after quilting is completed
Everyday, frequently washed, and baby quilts
Choose a product whose care instructions suit the intended laundering routine. Low-loft polyester, cotton, and cotton-poly blends are options to compare, but construction and care differ by product. For a lightweight quilt or baby quilt, Fairfield describes its Poly-Fil Low-Loft polyester as a suitable option; verify its instructions before use.
Decorative, wall, and show quilts
Decide whether the piecing or quilting should stand out. Compare the batting’s loft and drape with the look you want, and consider how your quilting design will secure it. The manufacturer’s recommended quilting distance applies to the specific batting you choose.
Clothing, totes, and home décor
For clothing, prioritize breathability and drape. Fairfield recommends breathable natural fibers such as cotton or wool, or cotton-polyester blends, for clothing, and describes its Quilter’s 80/20 as suitable for that use. Check that the specific product’s loft and care instructions work for your project.
2. Compare fibers and specific products
Cotton
Cotton can provide a natural-fiber feel and a rumpled surface after washing. Shrinkage and care instructions vary by product, so do not treat one cotton batting’s directions as universal.
For example, Quilters Select describes its Perfect Cotton as 100% long-staple cotton with a light scrim. Its directions say to hand prewash if prewashing is desired, not to machine wash or dry the batting before quilting, and to expect up to 3–5% shrinkage. The product’s stated quilting distance is up to 8½ inches. Those details apply to Perfect Cotton specifically.

- 【Washing Instructions】- Avoid pre-washing the batting before quilting. After finishing your quilt, wash it in a large washing machine with cold water and a small amount of liquid soap. You can quilt at this stage or pat the batting to restore its fluffy and soft appearance.

- 【Ease of Use】 - Our cotton batting is designed for easy cutting and layering. The flat and even texture allows you to cut it to your desired size without worrying about uneven tearing or poor distribution.
Cotton-polyester blends
An 80/20 blend may be a useful option to compare for a balance of cotton and polyester, but products in this category are not interchangeable. Quilters Select describes its Soft Blend as an 80/20 cotton-polyester product suitable for hand or machine quilting; its directions state up to 3–5% shrinkage and quilting up to 8½ inches.
Fairfield’s Quilter’s 80/20 is a separate product. Fairfield describes it as low loft, easy to needle, and smooth draping, with a quilting distance of 2–4 inches. This difference shows why you should check the exact package rather than assume that all 80/20 products share the same specifications.

Polyester
Polyester products are available in different lofts and constructions. Fairfield describes its Poly-Fil Low-Loft as retaining loft through washing and drying quickly, and its Poly-Fil Hi-Loft as creating a fuller appearance. Fairfield lists a quilting distance of 2–4 inches for both products. Follow the care and method recommendations for the specific product.
Wool and bamboo blends
Wool and bamboo are available as natural-fiber batting categories, but the reviewed guidance does not establish that all products in either category behave the same way. Fairfield includes Nature-Fil, a bamboo and certified-organic-cotton blend, among products it discusses for machine quilting. Check the chosen product’s care and quilting instructions.
3. Match the batting to your quilting method
Quilting distance and construction affect how batting behaves during stitching and handling. Fairfield recommends checking the package because quilting-distance guidance varies. Its FAQ describes scrim-backed products as suited to machine quilting, and needlepunched or bonded polyester products as favored by many hand quilters.

Hand quilting
Compare ease of needling and loft, and look for manufacturer guidance for hand quilting. Fairfield describes its Quilter’s 80/20 as easy to needle, while its FAQ notes that many hand quilters favor needlepunched or bonded polyester products. Test the actual batting and follow its specified quilting distance.

For machine quilting, check the product’s construction and method recommendations. Fairfield describes its Machine 60/40 as 60% cotton and 40% special-blend polyester, with a thin scrim for added strength. The company says the cotton holds fabric securely and the polyester helps the needle glide and prevents underside “pops.” These are manufacturer descriptions of that product, not guarantees about other batting.
Clothing and other sewing projects
For clothing, prioritize breathability and drape, and select batting with care instructions suited to the finished item. Fairfield recommends breathable natural fibers, cotton-poly blends, or wool for clothing. For other projects, compare the intended use with the batting’s loft, construction, and care directions.
4. Check quilting distance and prevent shifting
Use the maximum quilting distance printed on the package. Products differ even when their fiber content is similar: Fairfield lists 2–4 inches for its Quilter’s 80/20, while Quilters Select lists up to 8½ inches for its Soft Blend. These are product-specific manufacturer instructions, not general limits for all 80/20 batting.
Fairfield explains that batting can bunch or migrate if it is not quilted closely enough to secure it. Follow the package’s spacing guidance, baste securely, and quilt from the center outward. If the package is unavailable, Fairfield’s FAQ offers 2–4 inches as a general assumption; using the actual product instructions is preferable.

5. Plan for washing and shrinkage
Fairfield says natural-fiber batting such as cotton or wool may shrink 2–3% in the first wash and develop a rumpled surface. Quilters Select states that its Perfect Cotton and Soft Blend products can shrink up to 3–5%. These figures come from manufacturer guidance and should not be applied to every batting.
Fairfield’s general FAQ guidance for finished quilts recommends lukewarm water, a delicate cycle, and mild phosphate-free soap, with separate guidance for wool. Check the specific product bag or manufacturer instructions before laundering. Fairfield also warns that machine agitation can distort or damage unquilted batting; do not machine-wash loose batting unless the manufacturer explicitly directs you to do so.
6. Reduce bearding and fiber migration
Fairfield recommends quality fabric with a high thread count, appropriate batting, and a new sharp needle to help reduce bearding. It notes that bonded battings lock fibers together. Follow the batting’s quilting-distance guidance and baste securely to help limit fiber migration.
