How to choose the right Dulux paint finish for each room

The right Dulux finish depends on two separate decisions: the look you want and the performance the surface needs. Choose the sheen—how much light the dried paint reflects—then choose a formulation suited to the wall, ceiling or woodwork and to the room’s exposure to marks, grease, splashes, steam and moisture. A matt finish may be ideal for a calm living-room wall, while a kitchen or bathroom usually needs a specialist product rather than simply a shinier paint. Dulux’s own guidance is to consider the surface, where it is and the result you want (Dulux guidance on choosing paint).

Start with two decisions: appearance and performance

“Matt”, “silk”, “eggshell” and “gloss” describe appearance and, in broad terms, reflection. They do not by themselves guarantee that a paint will withstand scrubbing, resist grease or cope with bathroom steam. Those properties come from the specific formulation and its approved uses.

For example, a washable matt made for busy hallways can be more practical than an ordinary silk, while Dulux Easycare Bathroom is designed for moisture, steam and mould even though Dulux lists it as a soft-sheen finish. Read the current tin label and surface instructions before buying: product names, formulations, guarantees and availability can change.

What each Dulux finish looks like

Finish Appearance and reflection Typical use What to watch for
Matt Low reflection with a soft, velvety appearance. Interior walls and ceilings where you want a quiet, even colour. Ordinary matt is not automatically the most washable option. Select a durable matt formulation where frequent cleaning is expected.
Flat matt Even less reflective than standard matt. Surfaces where minimising glare is the priority. Its very low sheen can be less forgiving of heavy scuffing or repeated washing unless the product specifically says it is washable.
Silk Mid-sheen wall finish that reflects noticeably more light than matt. Walls where wipeability and a brighter, more reflective look are wanted. Reflected light can make bumps, roller marks and other preparation defects easier to see.
Eggshell Lower sheen than silk or satin, with a restrained finish. Interior woodwork when you want a classic look without a high gloss. Confirm that the selected product is intended for the particular wood or previously painted surface.
Satinwood or satin Softer sheen than gloss and more reflection than eggshell. Doors, skirtings, architraves and other interior woodwork. The word “satin” describes sheen, not a universal durability level; use the product’s own application and cleaning instructions.
Gloss Shiny and highly reflective. Woodwork when a bright, practical-looking surface is desired. It highlights uneven filling, dents and sanding scratches, so preparation has a major effect on the result.

Dulux describes matt as “smooth, velvety” and useful for hiding imperfections on less-than-perfect walls. Its finish guide also associates silk with walls and satin with woodwork (Dulux finish explanations). These are qualitative descriptions, not a universal numerical sheen scale.

Room-by-room starting points

Room or surface Useful Dulux starting point Why it fits Check before purchase
Living-room or bedroom walls in good condition Matt Low reflection gives a soft appearance and can make minor wall flaws less conspicuous. If the room receives frequent marks, compare an ordinary matt with a washable matt formulation.
Hallway, children’s room or other high-traffic wall Dulux Easycare Washable & Tough Matt Dulux describes it as stain-repellent and wipe-clean for heavily used spaces. Its “20 times tougher” statement is a Dulux product comparison, not an independent test result.
Kitchen walls Dulux Easycare Kitchen Matt Dulux presents it as wipeable and grease-resistant for everyday cooking marks. Deal with leaks, damp or failing plaster separately; paint cannot repair a substrate problem.
Bathroom walls Dulux Easycare Bathroom Soft Sheen Dulux describes this formulation as resistant to moisture, steam and mould. Match the tin’s instructions to the wall material, ventilation and actual moisture conditions.
Interior doors, skirtings and other woodwork Eggshell, satinwood or gloss Choose among lower, softer or higher sheen according to the look you want and the product’s suitability for the substrate. Gloss reflects the most light and therefore demands the smoothest preparation.
Ceilings A suitable matt or flat-matt ceiling product Low reflection helps avoid glare across a large surface. Use a product labelled for ceilings and check whether the ceiling has stains, condensation or a damaged coating that needs treatment first.

These are practical starting points based on Dulux’s UK product guidance, not rules that apply to every building. The room name alone is not enough: a rarely used kitchen, a poorly ventilated shower room and a busy family hallway have different demands.

Choose the formulation for the room’s exposure

Living rooms and bedrooms

Use matt when the main priorities are a muted appearance and reduced emphasis on small wall irregularities. Dulux notes that matt can make colours appear more similar under differing light conditions, which can help a colour read consistently as daylight changes (Dulux’s finish guide). For a room where children, pets or furniture regularly mark the walls, look for a washable or durable matt rather than assuming any matt will tolerate repeated wiping.

Hallways, stairs and children’s rooms

These areas commonly suffer hand marks, bags rubbing against walls and repeated cleaning. Dulux identifies Easycare Washable & Tough Matt for high-traffic rooms and describes it as wipe-clean and stain-repellent (Dulux Easycare range). Dulux’s product page claims it is “20 times tougher than standard Dulux Matt”; keep that wording as a manufacturer comparison, not as a laboratory result that applies to every wall, colour or cleaning method.

Kitchens

Cooking introduces grease as well as ordinary scuffs. Dulux presents Easycare Kitchen Matt as wipeable and grease-resistant (Dulux kitchen-paint guidance; Easycare range). A matt appearance can therefore be paired with a specialist kitchen formulation; you do not have to choose a glossy wall merely to obtain a cleanable surface. Follow the label’s drying and cleaning instructions, and improve extraction or ventilation if condensation and cooking vapour are the underlying issue.

Bathrooms and shower rooms

Dulux lists Easycare Bathroom as a soft-sheen product and describes it as resistant to moisture, steam and mould (Easycare Bathroom information; Dulux bathroom guidance). The product page also claims up to five years’ protection against mould, guaranteed. “Up to” and the guarantee conditions matter: they are Dulux’s terms, not a promise that every bathroom will remain mould-free regardless of ventilation, leaks or surface preparation. Do not use paint to conceal active damp, failed sealant or water ingress.

Woodwork

For skirtings, door frames, doors and other interior woodwork, the usual appearance choice is eggshell, satinwood or gloss. Eggshell gives a lower-sheen, understated result; satin provides a softer sheen; gloss is the most reflective and can look crisp when the underlying surface is smooth. Dulux associates satin with woodwork and describes gloss as reflective and practical (Dulux finish guide).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Woodwork exposes preparation more than a broad matt wall. Fill dents, sand ridges, remove dust and use the correct primer where the tin requires one. A high-sheen coating cannot level a damaged door or hide brush marks; it will often make them more visible.

How to decide, step by step

  1. Identify the substrate. Decide whether you are painting plasterboard or plaster, a ceiling, previously painted masonry, bare wood, varnished wood or an existing coated surface. Do not assume a wall emulsion is suitable for woodwork.
  2. Describe the exposure. Note traffic, children, pets, furniture rubbing, cooking grease, splashes, steam, condensation and how often you expect to wipe the surface.
  3. Set the appearance first. Pick low-reflection matt or flat matt, mid-sheen silk, or a woodwork sheen such as eggshell, satinwood or gloss. Remember that increasing sheen can increase the visibility of surface defects.
  4. Select a formulation with the required performance. For a busy wall, look for washable or tough; for kitchen grease, use a product identified for kitchens; for bathroom moisture and steam, use a bathroom formulation. Do not substitute a generic finish name for a stated performance feature.
  5. Inspect and prepare the surface. Repair cracks, flaking paint, dents, grease and powdery areas. Resolve damp, condensation, mould growth or leaks before decorating.
  6. Read the exact tin. Check permitted surfaces, primer requirements, coverage information, recoating time, cleaning instructions, ventilation advice and any limitations. Product pages and guarantees can change.
  7. Test the colour and sheen in the room. Dulux’s interior listing includes colour testers and peel-and-stick samples as options for checking a colour before committing (Dulux interior products). View the sample in daylight and artificial light, and on the actual wall where possible.
  8. Apply under suitable conditions. Work with the room ventilated as directed, respect drying times and avoid heavy cleaning until the coating has fully cured according to the label.

Preparation rules that matter more as sheen increases

  • Clean contamination: remove grease in kitchens and hand oils around doors before sanding or painting. A coating cannot adhere reliably to a dirty surface.
  • Repair defects: fill holes and cracks, allow repairs to dry, then sand them flush. Gloss and satin reflect raking light across every ridge.
  • Remove loose coatings: scrape and feather flaking paint rather than sealing it beneath a new coat.
  • Control dust: vacuum or wipe down after sanding and let the surface dry. Dust trapped in a sheen finish is especially obvious.
  • Prime where specified: bare wood, stains, porous repairs and certain existing finishes may need a primer or problem-surface treatment. The correct choice depends on the product label.
  • Protect adjacent surfaces: mask carefully, remove hardware where practical and use the recommended tools. A clean edge is part of the finish quality.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Choosing by sheen alone

A shinier paint is not automatically moisture-resistant or more durable. Replace the assumption with the product’s stated use: Easycare Kitchen Matt is the relevant Dulux example for grease-prone kitchen walls, while Easycare Bathroom addresses moisture, steam and mould.

Using ordinary matt in a scrub-prone area

Repeated wiping can mark or burnish a standard low-sheen coating. If a hallway or children’s room needs regular cleaning, choose a washable matt formulation and follow its cleaning limits.

Using silk to hide a rough wall

Silk reflects more light than matt, so uneven plaster, patching and roller texture may stand out. Improve the surface or choose a lower-reflection finish if disguising minor defects is the priority.

Applying gloss over poor preparation

Gloss magnifies dents, sanding scratches and brush marks. Strip back unstable paint, fill and sand carefully, remove dust and use the specified primer before applying the topcoat.

Painting over a moisture problem

Bathroom paint can provide the performance stated on its label, but it cannot cure a leaking pipe, failed sealant, rising damp or persistent condensation. Fix the source, dry the substrate and treat existing mould safely before repainting.

Assuming products with similar names are interchangeable

“Matt”, “silk” and “satin” are finish descriptions, while “Kitchen”, “Bathroom” and “Washable & Tough” identify performance-oriented ranges. Check the whole product name and the current label rather than selecting by one word.

How to balance colour, light and practical wear

Low-sheen finishes absorb more light and generally produce a calmer, less reflective appearance. Silk, satin and gloss reflect progressively more light, which can make a room feel brighter but can also create glare or reveal preparation defects. Dulux describes these differences qualitatively rather than with a standardised gloss measurement, so compare actual samples instead of relying on a number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Lighting changes the apparent result. A wall beside a large window may show more variation than the same colour on a shaded wall; artificial downlights can emphasise ridges and patchiness. Test a sample on more than one wall and inspect it at different times of day before buying all the paint.

For woodwork, decide whether you want the trim to recede (eggshell), provide a soft highlight (satinwood) or create a strong reflective contrast (gloss). The choice is aesthetic only after the substrate and product suitability have been confirmed.

What Dulux’s performance claims do—and do not—tell you

  • Dulux claims Easycare Washable & Tough Matt is 20 times tougher than standard Dulux Matt. The searched product information does not identify an independent test, universal cleaning protocol or publication year for that comparison.
  • Dulux claims Easycare Bathroom offers up to five years’ protection against mould, guaranteed. The word “up to” and the guarantee’s conditions apply; the result depends on the product being used as directed and on the room’s condition.
  • The finish descriptions explain appearance and typical associations, not a universal ranking in which every gloss is tougher than every matt. Formulation, substrate, preparation and use determine real-world performance.

A compact decision checklist

  • Is the surface a wall, ceiling or woodwork?
  • Is it sound, clean and dry, or does it need repair or treatment first?
  • How often will it be touched, marked or wiped?
  • Will it encounter cooking grease, splashes, steam or persistent moisture?
  • Do you want a low-reflection, mid-sheen or highly reflective appearance?
  • Would reflected light make existing imperfections more obvious?
  • Does the exact Dulux product label approve the surface and state the performance you need?
  • Have you tested the colour and viewed it in the room’s actual lighting?

Use matt for a soft, forgiving look on many living spaces, specialist washable matt for heavily used walls, Easycare Kitchen Matt for grease-prone kitchen walls, Easycare Bathroom Soft Sheen for bathroom exposure, and eggshell, satinwood or gloss for interior woodwork according to the desired sheen and the product instructions. That approach keeps appearance and performance separate—the key to choosing a Dulux finish that suits both the room and the surface.
