The right Sherwin-Williams interior wall paint depends on three decisions: how much washing and wear the room receives, what kind of appearance you want, and whether a specific feature such as stain blocking, moisture resistance or odor reduction matters. The four lines most clearly differentiated in Sherwin-Williams’ own guides are Emerald, Duration Home, SuperPaint and Cashmere.
Start by matching the line to the room’s demands, then choose a sheen offered for that line and test the color in the actual room with a tinted sample. Sherwin-Williams’ descriptions are manufacturer positioning, not independent head-to-head test results, so the most defensible choice is the one whose stated features fit your walls rather than a universal “best” label.

Quick answer: which line fits your walls?
Use this as a starting point, not a ranking:
- Emerald Interior Acrylic Latex is the feature-rich option when washability, coverage, stain resistance and resistance to water spotting are central concerns. Sherwin-Williams describes it as paint and primer in one and lists flat, matte, satin and semi-gloss sheens.
- Duration Home is aimed at walls where stain blocking and moisture resistance are useful. The cited room-by-room guide lists flat, matte, satin and semi-gloss.
- Cashmere emphasizes smooth application and a silky-looking finish. Sherwin-Williams says its surface is scrubbable; the guide lists flat, pearl, low lustre and medium lustre.
- SuperPaint is positioned as a smooth, durable interior finish. The separate SuperPaint Interior Acrylic with Air Purifying Technology variant makes additional manufacturer claims about reducing some VOC levels and common household odors; its listed sheens are flat, satin and semi-gloss.
Those descriptions do not establish that one line wins every room or that the products perform identically on every substrate. Cleaning frequency, existing wall condition, lighting and the exact sheen can change the practical result.
What each Sherwin-Williams line is designed to do
Emerald Interior Acrylic Latex
Emerald is the logical line to investigate when a wall must tolerate regular wiping or when you want several performance features in one product. Sherwin-Williams describes washability, coverage, stain resistance, resistance to water spotting and a paint-and-primer formulation. Those are manufacturer-stated attributes; the available material does not provide independent test numbers comparing Emerald with the other lines.

The cited product page lists flat, matte, satin and semi-gloss. That range lets you select a less reflective wall appearance or move toward a more cleanable, lustrous finish without changing product families. Confirm the current label and technical data for the color and package you intend to buy, because product menus can change.
Sherwin-Williams’ product page also contains this qualified statement: “This interior paint and primer in one contains anti-microbial agents* that inhibit the growth of mold and mildew on the paint surface and transforms walls with a beautiful finish that speaks for itself.” The asterisk is part of the statement; read the associated footnote on the current product page before treating it as a claim about your room’s overall mold control. Paint does not replace moisture diagnosis, ventilation or remediation.

Duration Home
Duration Home is presented as an interior paint with stain-blocking and moisture-resistant features. That positioning makes it worth comparing with Emerald for rooms where marks, splashes or damp cleaning are more important than achieving the softest visual finish.
The room-selection guide lists flat, matte, satin and semi-gloss for Duration Home. Because the line offers both low-reflectance and glossier choices, decide separately whether the wall needs to hide minor irregularities or withstand frequent cleaning. The guide does not supply a measured moisture limit or a comparative stain-removal score, so do not interpret “moisture resistant” as waterproofing.
SuperPaint and the Air Purifying Technology variant
Regular SuperPaint is described as providing a smooth, durable finish. If the main goal is a conventional, durable wall coating without choosing a specialty feature, it belongs in the comparison with Emerald, Duration Home and Cashmere.
SuperPaint with Air Purifying Technology is a distinct variant, not a synonym for every SuperPaint product. Sherwin-Williams says this version can reduce some VOC levels and common household odors. Those are product claims with limits: they are not a promise to remove all indoor pollutants, eliminate every odor, or substitute for source control and ventilation. The cited product page lists flat, satin and semi-gloss for this variant.

Cashmere
Cashmere is positioned around smooth application and a silky finish. Sherwin-Williams also describes the surface as scrubbable. This combination can appeal in living spaces, bedrooms or other areas where the visual feel of the finish matters and cleaning is occasional rather than constant.
The cited guide lists flat, pearl, low lustre and medium lustre for Cashmere. These names are not interchangeable with every other line’s labels. A Cashmere “pearl” or “low lustre” should be evaluated as the sheen offered for that product, not assumed to match another brand’s or line’s satin.
Side-by-side comparison
| Line | Manufacturer-stated positioning | Sheens listed in the cited guide | Most relevant selection question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Emerald Interior Acrylic Latex | Washability, coverage, stain resistance, water-spotting resistance; paint and primer | Flat, matte, satin, semi-gloss | Will the walls need frequent wiping or broad resistance to marks and water spots? |
| Duration Home | Stain-blocking and moisture-resistant features | Flat, matte, satin, semi-gloss | Are stains and moisture the dominant concern? |
| SuperPaint | Smooth, durable finish | Not stated for regular SuperPaint in the cited comparison | Do you want a conventional smooth, durable interior finish? |
| SuperPaint with Air Purifying Technology | Claims reduced levels of some VOCs and common household odors | Flat, satin, semi-gloss | Is the qualified odor/VOC feature important enough to verify the exact variant? |
| Cashmere | Smooth application, silky finish, scrubbable surface | Flat, pearl, low lustre, medium lustre | Is a soft-looking finish and smooth application more important than maximum feature breadth? |
The table summarizes how Sherwin-Williams presents the lines. It is not an independent performance test, and it does not establish a universal order from best to worst. Current prices and local stock were not established in the cited material, so compare the actual in-store or online price for the color, size and formulation you need.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMatch the line to the room’s real demands
High-touch hallways, entries and family spaces
Begin with the cleaning question: will fingerprints, scuffs and hand marks be wiped often? Compare Emerald and Duration Home first because their stated washability, stain and moisture-related features address that use case most directly. Cashmere can still be considered if its smooth, silky appearance is the priority and the cleaning schedule is moderate. Choose the sheen only after deciding how much wall reflection you can tolerate.
Kitchens, laundry areas and rooms exposed to splashes
Moisture and stain concerns deserve more weight here than a purely decorative finish. Duration Home’s stated moisture-resistant and stain-blocking positioning and Emerald’s stated resistance to water spotting and stains are the relevant manufacturer claims to compare. Neither description makes the coating a substitute for a functioning exhaust fan, leak repair or waterproof construction.
Bedrooms, dining rooms and low-traffic areas
Where walls are touched less often, appearance may be the deciding factor. Cashmere’s smooth-application and silky-finish positioning can make it a candidate, as can Emerald, Duration Home or SuperPaint in a lower-reflectance sheen. Look at a sample on the actual wall before choosing between flat, matte, pearl or another low-lustre option.
Rooms where odor is a specific concern
If reducing some VOC levels or common household odors is a priority, investigate only the SuperPaint Air Purifying Technology variant and repeat the claim accurately. It is not evidence that all indoor air contaminants will be removed. Identify odor sources, ventilate appropriately and confirm the product label before purchase.

Choose the sheen separately from the paint line
Sheen changes both the way a color looks and how practical the wall is to clean. Sherwin-Williams’ sheen guide describes the basic trade-off:
| Sheen description | Visual effect | When to consider it | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flat | Non-reflective; tends to draw less attention to minor surface imperfections | You want a quiet, low-reflectance wall appearance | It may be less suitable where walls are washed frequently; confirm the selected line’s cleaning guidance |
| Matte | Low sheen with more softness than a glossy finish | You want subdued reflectance while retaining the product line’s available matte option | Not every line offers matte, and labels can define sheen differently |
| Satin | Slightly glossy | You need a balance between a restrained appearance and easier routine cleaning | Light can reveal patching or uneven texture more readily than flat paint |
| Semi-gloss | Lustrous and generally selected for durability and frequent cleaning | Walls face repeated wiping or you want a noticeable reflective finish | Its reflectance can emphasize surface flaws |
| Pearl, low lustre, medium lustre | Cashmere-specific labels in the cited guide, ranging from softer to more reflective | You are choosing Cashmere and want to compare its own sheen vocabulary | Do not assume these names map exactly to another line’s satin or semi-gloss |
Always check the sheen list for the exact product. Emerald and Duration Home list flat, matte, satin and semi-gloss; Cashmere lists flat, pearl, low lustre and medium lustre; the Air Purifying Technology variant lists flat, satin and semi-gloss. A color may look different as sheen changes because reflected light changes the apparent depth and intensity.
Use a sample before buying full-size paint
Sherwin-Williams promotes tinted Color To Go samples that can be applied directly to the surface. Sampling is especially important for interior walls because daylight, LED color temperature, window direction, nearby furnishings and the existing wall color can all alter perception.
- Choose the candidate line and sheen first. A color in flat paint will not necessarily look like the same color in satin or semi-gloss.
- Obtain a tinted Color To Go sample. Confirm that the sample is tinted to the intended color and belongs to the product family you plan to use.
- Apply it in the actual room. Put the sample on a representative wall or a movable sample surface with the same preparation and texture as the wall. Avoid judging only from a small store chip.
- View it at different times. Check morning, afternoon and evening conditions, and turn on the room’s normal artificial lighting.
- Compare it beside fixed elements. Look at trim, flooring, cabinets and upholstery rather than viewing the color in isolation.
- Inspect coverage and undertone. The reviewed sources do not establish that one sample predicts every lighting or substrate condition, so treat it as a decision aid, not a guarantee of the final result.
- Record the exact formula. Keep the product name, sheen and color information so a second purchase matches the first.
A practical selection process
- Describe the room’s exposure. Note traffic, hand contact, splash risk, likely stains and how often you expect to wipe the walls.
- Set the appearance goal. Decide whether you want a non-reflective surface, a soft low-lustre look, a silky finish or a more noticeable luster.
- Shortlist two lines. Use Emerald and Duration Home when washability, stain or moisture concerns dominate; include Cashmere when smooth application and a silky finish lead; include SuperPaint when a smooth, durable finish is the main requirement.
- Check for a specialty requirement. If odor or VOC reduction matters, separate the Air Purifying Technology variant from regular SuperPaint and preserve the qualification that the claims concern some VOC levels and common household odors.
- Confirm available sheens. Remove any line that does not offer the sheen you want, rather than assuming a similarly named sheen exists.
- Inspect the wall before choosing a low-sheen finish. Flat and other low-reflectance options can be useful for hiding minor imperfections, while glossier choices can make texture and patching more visible.
- Test the color in place. Use a tinted sample and evaluate it under the room’s actual lighting before calculating the full quantity.
- Verify the current package and local stock. Product names, available sizes, prices and retailer inventory can vary by location and change over time.
How to weigh cleaning, appearance and claims
When two products appear suitable, assign priority rather than trying to maximize every attribute at once. A wall in a busy corridor may justify placing washability and stain resistance ahead of the softest appearance. A formal room with little contact may justify a lower-reflectance or silky finish. A damp-prone area requires attention to moisture sources as well as the paint description.

Remember that “scrubbable,” “washable,” “stain-blocking” and “moisture-resistant” are not interchangeable terms. They describe different manufacturer positions, and the available sources do not provide a common test method or measured score that lets you convert them into a single durability ranking. Read the current technical information for the exact formulation and follow its surface-preparation and cleaning instructions.

Buy enough paint for the project without treating a broad coverage claim as a guaranteed one-coat result. Coverage depends on the existing color, porosity, texture, repairs, application method and number of coats. Emerald is described as offering coverage, but that statement is not a quantified promise for every wall. A sample and a discussion with the retailer can help you estimate the quantity more responsibly.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Choosing by product name alone
Problem: Selecting the line that sounds most premium without identifying the room’s cleaning or moisture needs.
Recommended Free Tools
Correction: Start with exposure and maintenance, then use the manufacturer’s stated features to narrow the choice.
Confusing regular SuperPaint with the air-purifying variant
Problem: Expecting odor or VOC-related claims from every SuperPaint can.
Correction: Verify the exact “Air Purifying Technology” formulation and describe its claims as limited reductions in some VOC levels and common household odors.
Assuming sheen names are universal
Problem: Treating Cashmere’s pearl or low lustre as an exact match for another line’s satin.
Correction: Compare the actual sample and confirm the sheen menu for the selected line.
Skipping the in-room sample
Problem: Buying a full container from a paper chip or online image.

Decision examples
A hallway with frequent scuffs
Prioritize cleanability and resistance to marks. Compare Emerald and Duration Home, select a sheen that fits the desired reflectance, and test the color where the hallway’s lighting changes. Cashmere remains an option if its finish is more important and wiping is less frequent than expected.
A bedroom where a soft appearance matters
Start with Cashmere’s smooth-application and silky-finish positioning, then compare its flat, pearl or low-lustre choices with a low-sheen option from another line. Use a sample to check whether the undertone works with the room’s flooring and lighting.
A laundry room with splash risk
Give moisture and staining more weight. Compare Duration Home’s stated moisture-resistant and stain-blocking features with Emerald’s stated water-spotting and stain resistance, then choose among the sheens offered for the selected line. Investigate ventilation and leak control separately.
A room where household odor is the concern
Verify the SuperPaint Air Purifying Technology label, understand that the claim is limited to some VOC levels and common household odors, and address the odor source. Do not treat the paint as an all-purpose air cleaner.
Quick Recap
Final checklist before purchase
- Have you identified how often the walls will be cleaned?
- Are stains, splashes or moisture more important than finish appearance?
- Did you distinguish regular SuperPaint from the Air Purifying Technology variant?
