How to Clean a Garbage Disposal: Three Fast, Safe Methods That Work

Use baking soda and a splash-guard scrub for trapped grime, ice and salt for light abrasion, or citrus peel for quick deodorizing. This guide explains safe power-off steps, model-specific quantities, cold-water flushing and what never to put in a garbage disposal.

The quickest reliable approach is to match the method to the problem: use baking soda and a splash-guard scrub for trapped grime, ice and rock or kosher salt for light mechanical abrasion, and citrus peel when the disposal mainly needs freshening. Purpose-made cleaning pods are a convenient fourth option. Always disconnect power before putting a hand, brush or cloth near the opening, and use cold water whenever the disposer is running.

Safety rules before cleaning

A garbage disposal can start unexpectedly if its wall switch is bumped or if power returns after a breaker reset. Before any manual cleaning, switch off the wall control and disconnect the plug or turn off the circuit breaker. Whirlpool and GE both direct users to remove power before reaching through the sink opening. A wall switch alone is not enough protection if someone else can turn it on.

  • Keep hands out of the grind chamber. Use a cloth, long-handled brush or a tool specified by your owner’s manual rather than fingers.
  • Remove loose objects first. Take out utensils, glass, bottle caps and other visible items with pliers only after power is disconnected.
  • Restore power only for steps that require grinding. Check that the opening is clear, replace the splash guard, stand to the side and keep your face away from the opening.
  • Use cold water while grinding. Hot water can soften grease and move it farther into the drain. Cold water helps keep fats more solid so the grinding and flushing action can carry particles away.
  • Stop if the unit leaks, hums without spinning, trips the breaker repeatedly or smells electrical. Cleaning will not repair a failed seal, seized motor or wiring fault.

If your model manual gives different quantities or prohibits a particular material, follow that manual. Disposals differ in chamber design, splash-guard construction and approved cleaners.

Which cleaning method should you use?

Method Odor control Mechanical scrubbing Manual effort Supplies Compatibility note
Baking soda plus splash-guard scrub Strong when food and grease are trapped under the baffle Targeted scrubbing of accessible surfaces Highest Cloth or scouring pad, baking soda, warm water; vinegar only where the manual permits Use the owner’s quantities; Whirlpool and GE publish different formulas
Ice and rock or kosher salt Moderate; removes residue but is not a deodorizer by itself Quick abrasion as ice breaks apart Low Ice plus salt and cold water Published doses vary; examples are not universal
Citrus peel Good short-term freshening Minimal Low Small pieces of lemon, lime or orange peel Do not treat it as a substitute for removing buildup
Cleaning pods Formulated for odor and buildup Foaming action rather than hand scrubbing Lowest A compatible garbage-disposal cleaner pod Check the current label and your model’s instructions

For a persistent smell, start with the splash guard and upper lip of the chamber; odor commonly comes from food and grease held there. Use ice and salt when the surfaces look clean but feel coated. Choose citrus for a quick refresh after routine use.

Method 1: Baking soda and a splash-guard scrub

This is the most targeted method because the rubber splash guard and the upper rim are the parts you can clean directly. It addresses the buildup that a quick citrus rinse can leave behind.

Step 1: Isolate the power

  1. Turn off the disposer switch.
  2. Unplug the unit if it has an accessible plug, or switch off the correct circuit breaker.
  3. Test the wall switch once, without reaching into the sink, to verify that the motor does not start.

Step 2: Clean the splash guard and rim

  1. Lift or wipe the rubber splash guard, working around each flap. Do not pull hard enough to tear it.
  2. Use a damp cloth or nonmetal scouring pad to wipe the underside of the baffle and the upper lip of the grind chamber. Whirlpool specifically identifies these areas for scrubbing.
  3. Use a flashlight to check for stuck labels, vegetable fibers or hard fragments. Remove them with pliers, not your hand.

Step 3: Choose the manufacturer-specific baking-soda treatment

Whirlpool’s documented procedure uses a stopper, warm water and 1/4 cup of baking soda:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Put the stopper in the drain opening and fill the sink halfway with warm water.
  2. Mix 1/4 cup baking soda into the water.
  3. Reconnect power only after the opening is clear and the splash guard is in place.
  4. Turn on the disposer, then remove the stopper so the water and baking-soda mixture carries loosened particles through the unit.
  5. Run cold water and continue flushing for at least 15 seconds after the mixture has drained.

GE describes a different household variation: 1/2 cup baking soda followed by 1 cup white vinegar, left for about 10–15 minutes before flushing. The quantities and materials are not interchangeable across every model. If your manual does not approve vinegar, use the plain baking-soda procedure or a product it lists instead.

What this method can and cannot do

Scrubbing removes accessible organic film and grease from the splash guard, while the flowing mixture carries loosened particles away. It will not free a jammed flywheel, repair a leak or remove an object lodged below the visible opening. If the odor returns immediately, repeat the power-off inspection rather than adding more chemical cleaner.

Method 2: Ice and rock or kosher salt

Ice provides a temporary abrasive action as it fractures, and coarse salt helps scour residue from surfaces that are difficult to reach. This method is for light buildup and routine maintenance, not for sharpening blades or fixing a jam.

Step 1: Prepare a safe load

  1. Confirm that the splash guard and sink opening are clear.
  2. Restore power and position yourself away from the opening.
  3. Turn on cold water before adding anything.

Step 2: Add ice and salt gradually

Published instructions give different amounts. GE suggests a handful of ice cubes plus 1 tablespoon of rock salt. CLR’s disposal-pod guidance gives an example of about 2 cups of ice plus 1 cup of kosher or rock salt. These are examples, not a universal dose; use the quantity your model’s manual allows.

  1. Drop in a small portion of the ice and salt while cold water runs.
  2. Start the disposer and let it grind until that portion is shredded.
  3. Add the remainder gradually rather than forcing a packed load into the chamber.
  4. Keep hands, spoons and tongs out of the opening while the motor runs.
  5. After the ice is gone, continue cold-water flushing for at least 15 seconds; a 15–30-second flush is the KitchenAid recommendation.

Does ice sharpen disposal blades?

No. Household disposals generally use blunt impellers or lugs that tear food against a stationary grind ring; they are not kitchen knives that become sharpened by ice. Ice can dislodge soft residue and provide light abrasion, but it cannot restore a worn grind ring or damaged impeller. A disposal that still leaves large pieces, hums or vibrates after cleaning needs diagnosis, not more ice.

When to skip this method

Do not use an ice-and-salt load to force a stalled unit. If the motor only hums, switch off power and follow the manual’s jam-clearing procedure, which may involve a wrench socket at the bottom of the unit. A leak, cracked housing or repeated breaker trip also calls for repair or replacement rather than abrasive cleaning.

Method 3: Citrus peel for a quick freshen

Lemon, lime and orange peel release aromatic oils that make the drain smell cleaner for a short time. Whirlpool, GE, KitchenAid and InSinkErator all describe citrus peel as a deodorizing or freshening step. It is the simplest method, but it does not remove the film hidden beneath the splash guard.

  1. Cut the peel into small pieces. Large sections can bridge the opening or overload a small chamber.
  2. Turn on cold water before feeding any peel.
  3. With the disposer running, add a few pieces at a time. Wait for each portion to clear before adding more.
  4. Keep the water running while the peel is ground and for at least 15 seconds afterward.
  5. Wipe the splash guard separately if the smell returns quickly.

Avoid treating citrus as a cure for a clog. Pith and peel are organic solids; a large batch can contribute to a blockage, especially in a narrow drain line. Freshen in small portions and use the baking-soda scrub when odor is persistent.

Optional convenience: garbage-disposal cleaner pods

Purpose-made pods provide a measured, foaming cleaning step with less manual work. Whirlpool names affresh Disposer Cleaner (product W10135699) as a dedicated option. CLR sells Garbage Disposal Cleaner Pods described for buildup, mineral deposits and odors. Search for “garbage disposal cleaner pods,” then verify the current package directions, pack size and compatibility before buying.

  1. Disconnect power if the label requires manual placement or if you must lift the splash guard.
  2. Read the label for the required water temperature, pod count and whether the disposer must run.
  3. Place the pod exactly as directed; do not combine it with vinegar, bleach, baking soda or drain opener unless the label explicitly says to do so.
  4. Run cold water and the disposer for the stated time, then complete the label’s flush.

A pod is a convenience choice, not proof that a stronger chemical is safer. Never substitute a dishwasher tablet, laundry product or homemade mixture for a product specifically labeled for garbage disposals.

Cold-water technique that prevents repeat odors

Insufficient flow during and after grinding allows grease and food particles to remain in the chamber and drain. Whirlpool describes this as a common reason for disposer odor. Use this sequence whenever you operate the unit:

  1. Turn on a steady stream of cold water before adding food.
  2. Feed scraps in small batches so the motor can maintain speed.
  3. Let the disposer run until the grinding sound changes and the pieces have cleared.
  4. Keep cold water running for at least 15 seconds after grinding. KitchenAid specifies 15–30 seconds after use.
  5. Turn off the disposer first, then the water, unless your manual specifies another sequence.

Do not use a weak trickle. The point of the final flush is to move ground particles through the trap and branch drain rather than leaving them to settle.

Foods that commonly cause jams, clogs or odor

Cleaning is easier when less problematic material enters the chamber. KitchenAid and GE advise limiting or avoiding these items unless your model manual explicitly permits them:

  • Fibrous scraps: celery strings, corn husks, onion skins and similar fibers can wrap around moving parts or remain in the drain.
  • Grease and oil: liquid fat can cool downstream and coat the trap and drain line.
  • Coffee grounds: fine particles can settle into sludge rather than flushing cleanly.
  • Large bones: they can overload the motor or damage the grind components.
  • Heavy starch loads: pasta, rice, potato peels and similar foods can swell and form a dense mass.

Use the disposer for small, cold-water-fed portions of appropriate scraps, and compost or bin the rest according to local rules.

Weekly and periodic maintenance

  • Weekly: Wash the removable stopper and wipe the splash guard with dish soap and water. Whirlpool recommends this schedule for the stopper and splashguard.
  • After messy loads: Inspect the underside of the baffle for grease or food particles while power is disconnected.
  • Periodically: Run the disposer with cold water even when you are not grinding food, if your manual permits it, to move settled particles through the drain.
  • After cleaning: Check beneath the sink for drips at the flange, dishwasher inlet and discharge elbow. A clean chamber does not correct a plumbing leak.

What not to put down a garbage disposal

Never run lye or chemical drain cleaners through the unit. GE warns that these products may corrode metal parts, and Whirlpool advises avoiding harsh chemical drain cleaners. If a clog is present, use the manufacturer’s mechanical clearing procedure or call a plumber; mixing drain chemicals with another cleaner can create dangerous fumes or heat.

Do not pour bleach, solvents, oven cleaner or concentrated descaler into the chamber unless the appliance maker specifically approves that product. Do not combine vinegar with a commercial cleaner. “Natural” does not automatically mean compatible with seals, metal components or downstream plumbing.

Troubleshooting after cleaning

The smell remains

Disconnect power and inspect the underside of the splash guard, the upper lip and the sink flange. Remove trapped food with a cloth or brush. If the odor persists after those areas are clean, check the dishwasher drain hose and the sink trap for buildup; the source may be outside the disposer.

The disposer hums but does not grind

Turn off the switch and breaker. Do not keep cycling the motor. Follow the model manual’s jam-release instructions, usually using the supplied wrench point or an approved tool from below. Never use your hand to search for the obstruction.

The disposer leaks

Stop using it and dry the cabinet. Identify whether water comes from the sink flange, dishwasher connection, discharge elbow or disposer body. Tightening the wrong connection can worsen a failed gasket; replace the seal or have a technician evaluate it.

The breaker trips

Leave power off. Repeated trips can indicate a jam, overloaded circuit, shorted wiring or failing motor. Resetting the breaker over and over is unsafe and will not clean the unit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The sink drains slowly after cleaning

The blockage may be in the trap or branch drain rather than the disposal. Do not add chemical opener. Clear the plumbing mechanically or contact a plumber, especially if other fixtures drain slowly too.

Bottom line: choose the least aggressive method that solves the problem

Start with a power-off splash-guard scrub when odor comes from visible buildup. Use ice and salt for light residue when the unit operates normally, and use a few citrus pieces when you only need short-term freshness. Pods are useful when you want a measured, low-effort product. In every case, cold water, a 15–30-second final flush and careful food choices do more for long-term cleanliness than harsh chemicals or oversized loads.
