Clean hardwood floors in two stages: remove dry grit first, then lightly mist a cleaner made for your floor’s finish and wipe it immediately with microfiber. Keep water, vinegar, steam and unapproved shine products away from the wood. If the floor is clean but still dull, test a manufacturer-approved polish or refresher; scratches, worn finish and persistent cloudiness require recoating or refinishing rather than more cleaning.

Identify what your floor can tolerate before cleaning

“Hardwood” describes the material, not one universal finish. A modern prefinished board may have a factory-applied polyurethane or aluminum-oxide coating; an older floor may have site-applied varnish, lacquer, penetrating oil or wax. The same cleaner can be appropriate for one finish and damaging to another.

Look for installation records, the flooring manufacturer’s care sheet or the product label on a leftover box. If you cannot identify the finish, use the least-moist routine described below and ask the flooring manufacturer or an experienced wood-floor professional before applying polish, oil soap, wax or a restorative coating. Recommendations for oiled, waxed, lacquered, prefinished and unusually old floors can differ substantially.

  • Film-forming finishes: Polyurethane, varnish and lacquer generally tolerate a small amount of pH-neutral, residue-free cleaner when it is removed promptly.
  • Penetrating oil finishes: These often need a finish-specific soap or maintenance oil. A generic cleaner or polish can leave uneven sheen or interfere with future maintenance.
  • Waxed floors: Wax may be part of the intended maintenance system, but wax should not be spread over a non-waxed finish. Confirm the original system first.
  • Unfinished or heavily worn wood: Water can darken or distort exposed fibers. Cleaning alone will not substitute for sealing or refinishing.

The low-moisture cleaning method

This sequence removes the abrasive particles that scratch a finish, then deals with soil without soaking boards or seams. Work in manageable sections so the cleaner never dries into a film.

  1. Clear the room. Pick up small objects and use felt pads or clean towels under furniture legs while moving them. Grit trapped under a chair can abrade the finish as the chair shifts.
  2. Remove loose dirt dry. Sweep with a soft-bristled broom or use a dry microfiber dust mop. The National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) describes sweeping, dust mopping or vacuuming on the bare-floor setting as routine cleaning because it removes dust and dirt without dragging them across the finish.
  3. Vacuum carefully. Select the vacuum’s bare-floor or hard-floor setting and disable a rotating beater bar. Use a soft attachment around baseboards and in the gaps where grit collects. Empty a full canister or replace a clogged bag so suction remains steady.
  4. Choose a compatible cleaner. Read the flooring and cleaner labels together. A hardwood cleaner described as pH neutral, water based, residue free and fast drying is designed for low-moisture use, but the floor manufacturer’s instructions take priority.
  5. Apply sparingly. Lightly mist a small area of the floor or the microfiber pad, not a bucketful of solution across the room. The surface should be damp enough to lift soil, never wet enough to form puddles or run into joints.
  6. Wipe with microfiber. Move with the grain where practical. Turn or rinse the pad when it becomes dirty; a saturated pad redistributes grit and leaves residue. Keep a second dry pad available for any damp streaks.
  7. Dry and inspect. The floor should dry quickly with no visible film. Improve ventilation if needed, but do not use high heat that could stress boards. Re-clean a missed spot with a small amount of fresh solution rather than flooding the entire area.

For example, Bona describes its Hardwood Floor Cleaner as pH neutral, water based, residue free and fast drying, and recommends pairing it with a Microfiber Mop and Cleaning Pad. Those specifications explain why a small, controlled application is preferable to a wet bucket mop; they do not override instructions for a different finish.

How often to clean hardwood floors

Frequency should follow traffic and soil, not a rigid calendar. Dry dust removal can be daily in an entryway and less frequent in a spare room. Vacuum high-traffic paths several times a week, then use a lightly damp microfiber pass when the surface has actual soil or footprints. Clean spills as soon as they occur.

  • Every day or as needed: Sweep or dust-mop around exterior doors, kitchens and pet-feeding areas.
  • Several times a week: Bare-floor vacuuming in rooms that receive regular foot traffic.
  • When soiled: Use the low-moisture cleaner method on footprints, food residue and tracked-in grime.
  • Seasonally: Check felt pads, entry mats and areas near sinks or exterior doors for trapped grit or moisture.

Use walk-off mats at entrances, but choose mats with breathable, non-staining backings. Avoid rubber or latex backings unless the flooring manufacturer specifically approves them; they can trap moisture or discolor some finishes. Never slide furniture, and replace worn felt pads that have collected grit.

Why a hardwood floor looks dull

Dullness has more than one cause, and the remedy depends on which one you have. Surface dust, cleaner residue and greasy soil can make an intact finish look cloudy. Incompatible chemicals can etch or soften the finish. Scratches, worn traffic lanes and exposed wood remain visible after cleaning because a cleaner cannot rebuild a missing coating.

What you see Likely cause Appropriate response
Gray or cloudy film that changes as you wipe Dust, grime or cleaner residue Dry-remove grit, then use a small amount of compatible residue-free cleaner and a clean microfiber pad.
Even sheen loss with no deep scratches Minor surface wear or a maintenance layer that has aged After cleaning, test a manufacturer-approved polish or refresher in a hidden area.
White water marks, raised edges or dark seams Moisture intrusion or finish damage Stop adding liquid, dry the area and obtain finish-specific advice; sanding or board repair may be needed.
Linear scratches, worn paths or bare-looking patches Finish abrasion or loss Have a flooring professional assess a maintenance coat, recoating or refinishing.
Sticky or streaky surface after a product Residue, over-application or an incompatible product Do not layer another “shine” product. Follow the product maker’s removal guidance or seek professional advice.

Making a clean floor shine again

Test before applying polish or refresher

Polish and refresher products are maintenance coatings, not cleaners. Bona’s guide suggests polish every two to four months as desired, after testing a small area first. That interval is a product-guide suggestion, not a requirement for every floor. Traffic, finish type and the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule control the decision.

  1. Clean and dry the floor completely.
  2. Choose a polish or refresher explicitly approved for the exact finish.
  3. Apply it to a hidden corner or under furniture using the stated amount and applicator.
  4. Allow the test area to cure for the label’s stated time and view it in daylight from several angles.
  5. Proceed only if the sheen, color and texture match the surrounding floor and the product does not leave tackiness or visible edges.

Use one product system at a time. Repeated DIY chemical layering can create a thicker, uneven film that eventually needs removal before a professional can recoat the floor.

When polishing will not help

Deep scratches, finish worn through to wood, peeling, widespread grayness, cupping or recurring dullness after proper cleaning indicate a finish or substrate problem. A professional may recommend a screening and maintenance coat, a full recoat, localized board repair or sanding and refinishing. Bona’s guide suggests considering refinishing every three to five years, but actual timing depends on finish condition, traffic and the flooring professional’s assessment. Do not use that range as a promise that every floor needs refinishing on that schedule.

An NWFA-certified flooring professional can evaluate moisture, finish compatibility and board movement. A Bona Certified Craftsman is another finish-specific service category; verify current certification and local availability before hiring. Request a written scope that identifies preparation, coating type, drying or curing time, odor controls, furniture-return rules and whether pets or occupants must leave the area.

Products and tools that support safe cleaning

  • Soft broom or dry microfiber dust mop: Removes loose grit without hard bristles scraping the finish.
  • Vacuum with bare-floor setting: Prevents a rotating brush from abrading the coating. A crevice tool helps at baseboards and between boards.
  • Microfiber mop and spare pads: Apply very little liquid and let you change dirty pads before they spread grit.
  • Finish-compatible hardwood cleaner: Look for the floor maker’s approval and, where stated, pH-neutral, water-based, residue-free and fast-drying characteristics.
  • Approved polish or refresher: Use only when the finish maker permits it and only after a hidden-area test.

Bona lists a Cedar Wood cleaner with 95% USDA-certified biobased content and Safer Choice Certification. Those environmental and formulation claims describe that specific product; they are not evidence that every cleaner labeled “wood” is safe for every floor.

What not to use on hardwood floors

Vinegar and acidic homemade mixtures

NWFA technical guidance published in 2019 warns that vinegar can degrade finishes. Its popularity as a household cleaner does not make it a finish-safe choice. Do not increase the concentration when a diluted mixture seems ineffective; that raises the risk without repairing wear.

  • FAST DRYING: Formula is fast drying and does NOT require rinsing. Spray and wipe surface with dry mop or towel
  • For use on: varnish, acrylic and polyurethane-finished wood and laminate floors, baseboards, cabinet doors and crown molding
  • Not for use on: tile or floors with grout, oil finished wood floors and floors that require waxing
  • FORMULA CAN BE USED WITH MOST REFILLABLE SPRAY MOPS

Steam mops

The same NWFA guidance warns that steam vapor can penetrate wood and cause irreversible damage. Heat and pressure can drive moisture into seams, soften a finish or contribute to board movement. A “hard-floor” setting on a steam device does not guarantee compatibility with your installation.

Excess water and traditional wet mops

Standing water and saturated mop heads can cause cracking, splitting, cupping, warping and finish degradation. If a spill occurs, blot it immediately with an absorbent cloth, clean any remaining residue with a barely damp finish-compatible pad, then dry the area.

Wax, oil soap and generic shine products

Wax can make a non-waxed finish slippery or difficult to recoat. Oil soap may leave a film or conflict with the finish unless the manufacturer approves it. Products marketed as “shine,” “restore” or “rejuvenate” are not interchangeable; an acrylic or polymer layer can yellow, streak or require stripping. Never use one merely because it worked on a different house’s floor.

Spill, stain and streak troubleshooting

Fresh liquid spill

Blot from the outside toward the center with a dry, absorbent cloth. Do not scrub aggressively, which can spread liquid and abrade the finish. Once the area is dry, remove any remaining residue with a small amount of approved cleaner on microfiber.

Sticky food or grease

Lift solid material with a plastic scraper held nearly flat, then use the least amount of compatible cleaner needed to remove the film. Change pads as soon as they become greasy. If the spot remains dark after cleaning and drying, it may have entered damaged finish or wood and needs an assessment rather than stronger chemicals.

Streaks after mopping

Streaks usually indicate too much product, a dirty or saturated pad, incompatible residue or incomplete drying. Stop adding solution, vacuum or dust-mop loose grit, then make a small test pass with a clean, barely damp microfiber pad and the approved cleaner. If the film persists, follow the product manufacturer’s removal instructions or call a flooring professional; do not cover it with another polish.

Black marks from shoes

Try a dry microfiber pass first. For a mark that remains, use a tiny amount of approved cleaner on the pad rather than an abrasive eraser or scouring sponge. Abrasives can remove the sheen around the mark and make the repair more visible.

Preventing the next loss of shine

  • Place breathable walk-off mats at entrances and clean them so they do not become grit reservoirs.
  • Keep pet nails trimmed and use rugs only when their backings are approved for wood flooring.
  • Lift furniture instead of dragging it; install clean felt glides and inspect them regularly.
  • Keep indoor humidity within the range recommended by the flooring manufacturer to reduce seasonal gaps and movement.
  • Wipe water near sinks, dishwashers and exterior doors immediately.
  • Use curtains or blinds where strong sunlight is causing uneven color change, recognizing that natural aging cannot be reversed by cleaner.

A practical decision guide

Floor condition Do this Avoid
Dust and grit Soft broom, dry microfiber dusting and bare-floor vacuuming. Dragging abrasive debris across the boards.
Light soil on an intact finish Lightly mist finish-compatible cleaner and wipe promptly with microfiber. Wet bucket mopping or standing water.
Minor surface dullness after cleaning Test an approved polish or refresher in a hidden area, then follow its label. Unapproved acrylic, wax or “shine” products.
Scratches, worn finish or persistent dullness Obtain an assessment for a maintenance coat, recoating, repair or refinishing. Repeated DIY chemical layers.

The safest rule is simple: remove grit dry, use minimal moisture for soil, and treat loss of finish as a maintenance or restoration issue rather than a cleaning failure.
