To remove everyday dust from skirting boards without crouching, cover a vacuum’s brush attachment with a dryer sheet, secure it, and run the tool along the boards from top to bottom. The sheet catches particles while suction holds them in place. If you follow the reported tip, use only a small amount of floor cleaner on the sheet; the cleaner should make the sheet lightly damp, never wet.
This is a practical cleaning hack, not a proven long-term dust-control treatment. Better Homes & Gardens Australia reported an informal tryout by Livia Gamble in 2026 in which the dust adhered to the sheet almost immediately and all the skirting boards were cleaned in about five minutes with a long vacuum attachment. There is no controlled test showing how much dust the method removes compared with other tools or how long any dust-repelling effect lasts.

What the dryer-sheet method is good for
Skirting boards collect loose household dust at floor level, where a conventional cloth often means kneeling, bending or repeatedly moving furniture. The dryer-sheet attachment is designed for that first, dry-removal pass. The vacuum supplies airflow, the brush loosens particles and the sheet provides a disposable surface for dust to stick to.
Care Cleaning, quoted by Better Homes & Gardens Australia in 2026, says: “It creates a light barrier that helps repel dust… so your baseboards stay cleaner for so much longer.” Treat that as the cleaner’s explanation of the social-media tip, rather than as an established scientific result. The available report does not measure a dust-repelling period, compare treated and untreated boards under the same conditions, or establish a quantified removal rate.

The technique will not replace wet cleaning when the paint has greasy fingerprints, dried splashes or ground-in grime. Use the sheet-and-vacuum pass to remove loose material, then choose a damp cloth, mop or targeted scuff treatment for what remains.
What you need before starting
- A vacuum with a brush attachment. A long tube or wand lets you stand upright.
- One clean, dry dryer sheet that covers the brush opening.
- A way to secure the sheet, such as a band or tape that does not obstruct the vacuum airway.
- Optional: a small amount of floor cleaner for the reported version of the tip.
- A clean cloth or flat microfibre mop for wet grime.
- Warm water, plus a little white vinegar or dish soap if the boards need more cleaning than water alone.
- A melamine eraser sponge for isolated scuff marks.
- A bin or bag for the used sheet.
Check the vacuum manufacturer’s attachment instructions before covering an accessory. The sheet belongs over the brush head, not over the vacuum’s main intake, filter or motor housing. Keep liquid away from the machine.

- Clear the route. Move shoes, toys and small furniture far enough away that the brush can travel continuously. Close doors or windows if a strong draft would blow dust back onto the boards.
- Fit the sheet. Pull the dryer sheet over the vacuum brush attachment so it spans the bristles and opening. Secure the edges firmly enough that the sheet cannot be sucked into the tube, while leaving the airflow path open.
- Add cleaner only if you are following the reported tip. Put a small amount of floor cleaner on the sheet. Do not saturate it; a wet sheet can smear paint, drip onto flooring or send moisture toward the vacuum.
- Start at the highest point. Place the brush at the top edge of one section of skirting board and work downward. This lets loosened particles fall onto the sheet or floor rather than onto an area you have already finished.
- Use slow, overlapping passes. Keep the brush in contact with the board and move along its length. Give extra passes to the top ledge, corners and the groove where the board meets the wall, because those areas collect visible dust.
- Watch the sheet. Stop if it becomes overloaded, tears or blocks suction. Replace it before moving to another dusty room if the surface is visibly coated.
- Finish the room before removing the sheet. Turn off the vacuum, detach the brush and fold the dusty sheet inward before placing it in the bin. Do not shake it indoors.
In Gamble’s 2026 informal tryout, a long Dyson attachment stayed fitted while she cleaned all the skirting boards in about five minutes. That time is an individual report, not a guaranteed result; room size, furniture and dust load will change the duration.

When dry dusting is not enough
Inspect the board after the vacuum pass under ordinary room light. Select the lightest treatment that matches the mark instead of wetting every section.

White vinegar and dish soap are alternatives mentioned for a damp follow-up, not ingredients to combine. Never mix vinegar with bleach or other chlorine products. If you do not know the paint or coating, test any cleaner on a hidden section and wait for it to dry before treating a visible area.
How to clean skirting boards without bending
Use the vacuum’s longest stable reach
A long wand or crevice attachment lets you keep your back upright while the brush follows the board. Choose the brush head rather than a narrow crevice nozzle for painted surfaces; the bristles distribute contact and are less likely to dig into a soft finish. Keep the tube at a comfortable angle and work in short sections so you do not twist your wrist.

Switch to an extendable wet-cleaning tool
For boards that need a damp wipe, an extendable skirting board cleaner or an extendable mop can provide reach without kneeling. The same type of tool can be useful on windows, ceilings and a shower recess, according to the practical recommendation accompanying the tip. Use a washable microfibre head when possible, wring it thoroughly and keep water off electrical outlets and floor edges.
Work in manageable zones
Divide the room by wall rather than trying to clean the entire perimeter in one pass. Finish the dry work on one wall, check corners and then move the furniture back. This reduces repeated bending and makes it easier to notice sections that need a second treatment.

How often to repeat the routine
The practical recommendation attached to the tip is to clean skirting boards every one to two weeks. That interval is intended to prevent dust and grime becoming a harder-to-remove build-up. Shorten it for rooms with heavy foot traffic, open windows, pets or renovation dust; extend it only when the boards remain visibly clean.
Use a simple two-stage routine:
- Every one to two weeks: vacuum the boards with the sheet-covered brush, starting at the top and working down.
- When inspection finds residue: wipe only the affected sections with a barely damp cloth or mop.
- When a mark remains: spot-test a melamine sponge or the mild cleaning option suitable for the finish.
- After wet cleaning: dry the board and the floor edge so moisture does not sit in the joint.

Troubleshooting common failures
The sheet is pulled into the attachment
Turn off the vacuum and refit the sheet so it is stretched across the brush rather than hanging into the opening. Use a secure edge fastener, but do not cover vents or restrict airflow. Dust falls back onto the board
Check that you are moving from top to bottom and that the sheet still has clean surface area. Slow down at the upper ledge and corners. A second dry pass or a damp microfibre follow-up may be more effective than continuing with a saturated sheet.
The cleaner leaves a streak
The sheet may contain too much floor cleaner, or the product may not suit the coating. Stop, wipe the area with a clean cloth dampened with plain warm water, dry it and test a different method on an inconspicuous spot. Do not add more product to hide the streak.

Scuffs do not come off
Use a barely damp melamine sponge on a tiny test area and rub lightly. If the mark remains or the paint begins to change, stop rather than increasing pressure. The scuff may be embedded in the coating and need touch-up painting instead of stronger household chemicals.
You cannot reach behind furniture
Use the longest safe vacuum attachment or an extendable cleaner, and move only the furniture that can be moved without injury. Do not overreach while twisting; clean the accessible edge, then reposition yourself or the item.
