Clean the removable air filter about every two weeks when the air conditioner is in frequent use. That interval keeps dust from restricting airflow and may reduce the dust and odour buildup that can make a unit smell musty. It does not guarantee that mould cannot grow inside the whole appliance. Cooling leaves condensation on internal surfaces, so drying the indoor unit after use—through Fan mode or Auto Dry when your model supports it—is an equally important part of moisture control.
Use your model’s manual as the final authority. Filter construction, access panels, washability, drying instructions, reminders and available drying modes vary by brand, model and region.

What the two-week rule actually covers
The two-week recommendation is principally about the removable air filter, not every component inside the air conditioner. Daikin Global says, “Cleaning the filter once every two weeks is recommended.” LG USA recommends cleaning every two weeks during periods of heavy summer use, while Samsung Philippines advises every two weeks or whenever the filter-cleaning reminder appears. Panasonic’s Myanmar guidance uses the same interval for units used daily in a dusty environment.
These are manufacturer maintenance instructions, not independent mould-prevention trials or a public-health guarantee. The right interval depends on how often the unit runs and what enters the room air. A lightly used bedroom unit in a clean environment may accumulate dust more slowly than a daily-use unit exposed to pets, cooking particles, construction dust or open windows. Conversely, a reminder light or visibly dirty filter is a reason to clean sooner than two weeks.

Do not turn any one manufacturer’s wording into a universal schedule for coils, drain pans, fans or internal heat exchangers. Those parts need model-specific inspection and, often, professional service.
Why a clean, dry unit matters for mould and odour
In cooling mode, warm room air passes over a cold indoor heat exchanger. Water vapour condenses on that exchanger and drains away. LG explains that condensation is normal, but a heat exchanger that remains wet can trap odours and create conditions in which mould may grow. Dust on the filter can restrict airflow, allowing more residue to collect and making the unit harder to dry.
Filter cleaning removes one source of dust; it does not sterilise the coil, fan barrel, drain pan or insulation. Drying the indoor unit after cooling addresses the other contributing condition—leftover moisture. If your model offers Auto Dry, follow the manual’s instructions. If it does not, LG USA suggests running Fan mode for about 30 minutes after Cool mode. The fan-only period and the feature name can differ by model, so do not assume every unit has the same control.

How to clean the filter safely every two weeks
- Switch the unit off. Stop operation with the remote, then isolate power according to the manual before opening the indoor unit. Never reach into a moving fan or remove covers that the owner’s instructions do not identify as removable.
- Read the model-specific removal instructions. Locate the filter access panel and note its orientation. Some filters slide out; others lift or fold down. If the manual says a filter is disposable or non-washable, replace it with the specified part instead of rinsing it.
- Inspect before washing. Look for a layer of dust, pet hair, grease, damage, warping or a persistent dark or musty residue. A soft-bristle brush or vacuum cleaner can lift loose dust; Samsung’s cleaning guidance names both as suitable options. Keep suction gentle enough not to tear the mesh.
- Wash only if the manufacturer permits it. A gentle rinse is common guidance. For a very dirty Daikin filter, the cited instructions allow lukewarm water and neutral detergent. Do not use hot water, abrasive powder or a stiff brush unless your manual explicitly allows it.
- Rinse away detergent. Residue left in the mesh can attract dust or produce odour. Shake off excess water without twisting the frame.
- Dry it completely in shade. Daikin advises drying washed filters in shade; Samsung says to air-dry away from direct sunlight. Use a clean, ventilated place and wait until the frame and mesh are fully dry. Do not reinstall a damp filter, use a heater to accelerate drying, or leave the filter where it can collect outdoor dust.
- Reinstall in the original direction. Seat the filter fully so air cannot bypass its edges. Close the panel and restore power only after everything is dry and secure.
- Reset the reminder if required. Some models have a filter-cleaning indicator that must be reset through a remote-control button sequence. Use the manual’s exact procedure; resetting a light does not clean the filter.
If you cannot identify the filter, access panel or approved cleaning method, stop and obtain the manual for the exact model. Forcing a panel can break clips or expose electrical parts.
Dry the indoor unit after every cooling session
Make moisture removal part of the routine rather than waiting for a smell. Near the end of cooling, select Fan mode for the period specified by your manual. LG USA’s guidance is approximately 30 minutes after Cool mode. On models with Auto Dry, enable that function if the manual recommends it; the unit may run its fan automatically to evaporate residual water.
Drying mode is not a substitute for filter cleaning. A blocked filter can reduce airflow, while a dirty coil or drain system can retain contamination that fan-only operation cannot remove. Keep the indoor unit’s air outlet and surrounding wall clear so air can circulate during the drying cycle. Do not switch off power immediately if your model’s instructions require an automatic drying sequence to finish.

Choose a shorter or longer interval based on conditions
Two weeks is a practical inspection point during regular use, not a promise that every filter will need exactly the same treatment. Check more often when any of these conditions apply:
- Daily or near-continuous cooling, especially in a hot season.
- Visible dust, pet hair, smoke, cooking residue or renovation debris.
- Open windows near traffic, fields or unsealed soil.
- A household member notices weaker airflow or a dusty smell.
- The unit’s filter reminder appears before the planned date.
If the filter remains visibly clean after light use, follow the manual’s minimum interval rather than abandoning maintenance entirely. Record the cleaning date on a calendar or maintenance log, and inspect before the first heavy-use period.
Filter maintenance is different from internal cleaning
| Part | What you can generally do | When to escalate |
|---|---|---|
| Removable air filter | Inspect, vacuum or gently rinse when the manual permits; dry fully in shade | Mesh is damaged, cannot be removed safely, or remains odorous after cleaning |
| Indoor heat exchanger or coil | Keep the accessible area unobstructed; follow only model-approved care | Visible buildup, persistent smell or suspected mould |
| Cross-flow fan or blower | Do not reach inside or scrub through the grille | Daikin advises contacting a distributor when dirt is noticeable on the cooling fan or heat exchanger |
| Drain pan and hose | Check for unusual water around the unit without opening sealed sections | Leaks, standing water, repeated dripping or a blocked drain indication |
Internal components often require partial disassembly, electrical isolation and controlled cleaning. A filter that looks clean does not prove the fan barrel, coil or drain pan is clean.

- Warm Reminder: Since we are vacuum packaging, we recommend that you disassemble the foam pad pre filter and leave it for 2-3 days until it fully rebounds before using it. We recommend replacing the carbon filter every 1 to 2 months for a better purification effect.
What not to spray inside the air conditioner
Do not improvise with bleach, vinegar, disinfectant, fragrance, insecticide or a generic coil-cleaning spray inside the indoor unit. Daikin Malaysia warns that ordinary commercial cleaners can adversely affect resin and other internal parts and may contribute to problems such as leaks. A chemical that is safe on a bathroom surface may attack plastics, coatings, seals or electrical insulation in an air conditioner.

Use only a product and application method expressly approved for your model. If the manual does not describe spraying an internal part, keep liquids out of the housing and arrange qualified service instead. Never mix cleaning chemicals, and never spray through the outlet grille toward the fan or electronics.
When a musty smell needs professional attention
A brief dusty odour after a long shutdown can come from accumulated residue, but a smell that returns after filter cleaning and proper drying points to areas you cannot safely reach. LG USA says professional cleaning may be needed when odour persists because internal components may need to be disassembled and cleaned. Daikin advises contacting a distributor when dirt is noticeable on the cooling fan or heat exchanger.

Arrange service promptly if you notice:
- Musty or sour odour that remains after a clean, dry filter and a drying cycle.
- Visible dark, slimy or caked buildup on the fan, coil or drain area.
- Water leaking from the indoor unit, repeated dripping or a blocked-drain warning.
- Weak airflow despite a clean, correctly installed filter.
- Unusual noise, burning smell, electrical fault or a panel that will not close securely.
Tell the technician the model number, when the smell began, how often the unit runs and when the filter was last cleaned. Stop using the unit if there is an electrical burning smell or active leakage near wiring, and follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions.
A practical two-week maintenance checklist
- Check the filter condition, not just the calendar.
- Turn off the unit and follow the exact removal path in the manual.
- Vacuum or gently rinse only with an approved method.
- Use lukewarm water and neutral detergent only where the manufacturer permits it.
- Air-dry the filter completely in a shaded, ventilated place.
- Reinstall it in the correct orientation and reset any reminder.
- After cooling, run the model’s approved Fan or Auto Dry cycle; LG’s cited example is about 30 minutes of Fan mode.
- Check for odour, leaks and unusual airflow without opening sealed internal sections.
- Book professional cleaning when internal dirt is visible or odour persists.
Before leaving the unit unused
For a planned shutdown, clean and dry the filter, then follow the manual’s instructions for drying the indoor unit and isolating power. Panasonic’s guidance specifically stresses cleaning in dusty daily-use conditions and drying internal parts before extended non-use. Do not cover or seal a damp indoor unit; trapped moisture can preserve the very conditions you are trying to remove.

The bottom line on mould prevention
Inspect and clean the removable filter every two weeks during frequent use, adjusting sooner for dust, pets or heavy operation. Always dry a washed filter fully before reinstalling it, and use Fan mode or Auto Dry after cooling when your model supports that function. This routine reduces dust and residual moisture—two plausible contributors to odour and mould—but it cannot guarantee a mould-free air conditioner. Persistent smell, visible internal buildup or leakage calls for model-qualified professional service, not an unapproved spray.
