The safest way to clean everything in and around your home is to use a repeatable sequence: declutter, clean from high to low and from cleaner to dirtier areas, then sanitize or disinfect only when the situation requires it. Match every product to the surface, keep surfaces wet for the label’s required contact time, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for materials, electronics, fabrics, toys, and appliances.
Routine cleaning removes dirt and most germs in most homes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states: “In most situations, cleaning alone is enough to prevent the spread of germs.” Sanitizing and disinfecting are additional steps for specific circumstances, not automatically better versions of everyday cleaning.

Cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting are different jobs
Choosing the right level prevents both under-cleaning and unnecessary chemical exposure. The CDC separates household hygiene into three steps:

Always clean before sanitizing or disinfecting. Soil and grease can shield germs and interfere with a chemical’s action. A shiny surface is not proof that it has been sanitized or disinfected, especially glass and mirrors.

Set up an efficient whole-home workflow
1. Declutter before applying a cleaner
Put away objects, remove rubbish, and clear floors and countertops. Cleaning around clutter spreads dust and leaves hidden areas untreated. Gather reusable cloths, a vacuum, surface-appropriate cleaners, detergent, gloves, and any eye protection or other equipment required by a product label.
2. Use a consistent direction
Work from high surfaces downward so loosened dust lands on areas you have not cleaned yet. Move from cleaner areas to dirtier ones, finishing with toilets, floors, waste containers, and other heavily soiled zones. Use separate cloths for kitchens, bathrooms, and visibly contaminated areas so you do not transfer soil or germs.
3. Clean, then decide whether extra treatment is needed
Wash or wipe the surface with the appropriate cleaner first. After it is visibly clean, assess whether sanitizing or disinfecting is warranted because of illness, a high-risk household member, a recalled food, or another known contamination concern. Do not disinfect every surface by default.
4. Follow dwell and contact-time directions
For a disinfectant to work, the surface must remain visibly wet for the full contact time on the label. Reapply if it dries too soon. Do not substitute a shorter time because the surface looks clean, and do not mix products to try to make them stronger.
5. Finish the cleanup safely
Launder reusable cloths and mop heads as appropriate, empty the vacuum without releasing collected dirt back into the room, wash your hands, and return chemicals to secure storage away from children and pets.

Kitchen counters, sinks, and food-contact surfaces
Clean counters with hot, soapy water, paying attention to seams, handles, faucet bases, and the areas around appliances. Use a cleaner that the countertop material permits; natural stone, finished wood, laminate, and metal can have different restrictions. Rinse or wipe away residue when the product directions call for it.

Sanitize a food-contact surface when the circumstances call for it, such as after a recalled food item or a known contamination event. Select a product labeled for that surface and for food-contact use, and follow its directions for dilution, contact time, and whether a potable-water rinse is required. Do not assume that a general bathroom disinfectant is suitable for a counter where food is prepared.
Bathrooms and other hard surfaces
For tile, sealed floors, sinks, tubs, toilets, doorknobs, light switches, handles, and other hard surfaces, use soap and water or a cleaner approved for the material. Remove visible soil first. Give extra attention to high-touch points: toilet flush handles, faucet levers, cabinet pulls, shower controls, and door hardware.
Disinfect only after cleaning when illness, elevated household risk, or a specific contamination concern makes it appropriate. Keep the surface wet for the label’s full contact time, ventilate the room, and use the gloves or eye protection specified by the label.

Use a product intended for glass and follow its directions. Apply it to a cloth rather than flooding frames, seals, switches, or electronics near the glass. A clear, streak-free finish indicates that visible soil was removed; it does not establish that disease-causing germs are absent. If a window or mirror has a contamination concern, verify that the product is approved for that material before considering sanitizing or disinfecting.
Carpets and rugs
Vacuum carpets and rugs regularly, moving slowly enough to collect embedded dirt. Use a carpet product designed for the fiber and backing, and follow its instructions for dilution, extraction, drying, and ventilation. Dispose of collected dirt safely so it is not blown back into the room. Spot-test a hidden area before using a new liquid product, and keep the carpet from being used until it is completely dry when the product requires that precaution.
Laundry, towels, linens, and cloth toys
Launder clothing, towels, bedding, and washable cloth toys with detergent at the recommended temperature, then dry them completely. Follow care labels for heat-sensitive fabrics and stuffed items. Wash the hamper or basket as appropriate for its material.

CDC guidance says laundry from a sick person can be washed with other household laundry. Handle dirty items without shaking them, place them directly in the hamper or washer, and wash your hands after handling them. Use a separate laundering process only when a care label, product label, or healthcare instruction requires it.

Phones, tablets, touchscreens, keyboards, and remotes
Electronics require the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions. Power down and disconnect equipment when the instructions call for it, use only an approved cloth or wipe, and keep liquid away from ports, speakers, seams, and vents. Never spray cleaner directly onto a screen or keyboard unless the manufacturer specifically permits it.
A wipeable cover can make routine cleaning easier, but the cover itself must be compatible with the device and cleaned according to its instructions. Do not use a household disinfectant on electronics merely because it is effective on hard bathroom surfaces.
Toys and infant-feeding items
Use the manufacturer-approved method for toys, bottles, nipples, breast-pump parts, and other infant-feeding equipment. Depending on the item, approved options can include boiling, steaming, a weakened bleach solution, or a dishwasher sanitizing cycle. Compatibility matters: heat, chemicals, and dishwasher pressure can damage some plastics, finishes, electronics, or adhesives.
After washing or sanitizing, let items air-dry thoroughly. Store them only when fully dry, and keep diluted solutions and cleaning products inaccessible to children.
Entryways and areas around the home
Apply the same material-first approach to exterior-facing doors, porch or patio furniture, railings, trash-container handles, and other hard surfaces around the home. Remove loose dirt first, then use a cleaner approved for the finish. Avoid allowing runoff from a chemical product to reach plants, soil, storm drains, pets, or children; the product label controls outdoor use and disposal.

Choose a method by surface and risk

The decisive comparison is not which cleaner is marketed as strongest. Check surface compatibility, whether the task calls for cleaning or disinfection, required contact time, ventilation and protective equipment, whether the item can be laundered or vacuumed, manufacturer restrictions, and safe storage.
How to disinfect safely
Use an approved product on a compatible surface
For hard surfaces that tolerate it, choose an EPA-registered disinfectant and follow its label. An appropriately diluted bleach solution is another option only for compatible hard surfaces and only when prepared exactly as directed. The label determines the organisms addressed, dilution, application method, contact time, ventilation, protective equipment, and disposal.
Pre-clean visible dirt
Remove grease, food, dust, and other soil with soap and water or the cleaner approved for the material. Disinfectant is not a substitute for cleaning. After pre-cleaning, apply the disinfectant so the entire target area remains wet for the required contact time.
Control exposure while the product works
- Provide the ventilation required by the label.
- Wear gloves and eye protection when specified.
- Use room-temperature water for dilution unless the label says otherwise.
- Label any diluted solution with its contents and preparation information.
- Keep children and pets away from wet treated surfaces and stored chemicals.
- Wash hands after removing gloves and completing the task.
Never combine chemicals
CDC’s safety instruction is direct: “Do not mix products or chemicals with each other.” Combining bleach with ammonia, acids, detergents, or another disinfectant can create dangerous gases or reactions. Never transfer a chemical into an unlabeled bottle, and never use a food or drink container for storage.
Disinfectants are not medicines or personal-care products. Never ingest, inhale, inject, or apply them to skin, people, animals, or pets. If exposure occurs, follow the product’s first-aid directions and contact appropriate emergency or poison-control services.

High-touch surfaces
Clean light switches, doorknobs, handles, countertops, faucets, sinks, toilets, and frequently handled electronics regularly and after visitors. “Regularly” is deliberately conditional: household traffic, visible soil, shared use, and the presence of illness determine how often the task is needed.

Lower-touch surfaces
Clean other surfaces when visibly dirty or as needed. There is no universal household timetable that fits every material, climate, occupancy level, and activity. A written rotation can help, but it should respond to actual use rather than create unnecessary chemical exposure.

Illness or elevated health risk
When someone is sick, or when someone at higher risk is in the household, increase attention to high-touch surfaces and disinfect after cleaning where the product and material are compatible. Follow healthcare advice for a particular infection; ordinary household guidance does not replace condition-specific instructions.
Known contamination
Use the event itself to choose the response. A recalled food may justify sanitizing a food-contact surface after cleaning. A spill of bodily fluid or another specific contaminant may require a labeled disinfectant, protective equipment, and disposal steps. If the label does not address the surface or contaminant, do not improvise a stronger mixture.
Care for cleaning tools and prevent cross-contamination
- Use clean, reusable cloths and launder them after use; do not return a cloth used on a toilet to a kitchen counter.
- Wash mop heads according to their care instructions and let them dry before storage.
- Empty a vacuum in a way that prevents collected dust from dispersing; follow the vacuum manufacturer’s filter and bag instructions.
- Clean hampers, baskets, buckets, and caddies when their materials permit.
- Keep chemicals in their original labeled containers or in clearly labeled, approved dilution containers.
- Store products upright, closed, and away from heat, children, and pets.
- Wash hands after cleaning, after handling dirty laundry, and after removing gloves.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Disinfecting before cleaning
Problem: Dirt and grease block chemical contact. Correction: Wash or wipe first, then apply disinfectant and maintain the label’s wet contact time.
Using one “universal” cleaner everywhere
Problem: A product safe for glazed tile may damage a screen, stone, wood finish, or food-contact surface. Correction: Read both the product label and the material manufacturer’s instructions before use.
Wiping a disinfectant dry immediately
Problem: The chemical may not have remained wet long enough to work. Correction: Reapply as needed to keep the surface visibly wet for the complete contact time.
Assuming appearance equals hygiene
Problem: A polished mirror or spotless counter can still carry germs. Correction: Decide whether sanitizing or disinfecting is indicated by the situation, not by shine alone.
Mixing products or making stronger bleach
Problem: Mixing can release toxic gases, and an incorrect concentration can injure people or damage surfaces. Correction: Use one labeled product at a time and prepare bleach only at the label’s specified dilution with the specified water.
Ignoring drying
Problem: Damp laundry, toys, carpets, and feeding items can remain unsuitable for use or storage. Correction: Dry completely before putting them away or returning them to service.
