To convert a photo into clip art, simplify its colors and shapes, then either trace it into editable vector artwork or create a stylized raster image. Illustrator Image Trace and Inkscape bitmap tracing follow features in the source photo; Illustrator Concept to Vector instead generates a stylized interpretation. Choose based on whether you need faithful editable shapes or a more reimagined look, and plan to refine the result manually.
Choose the kind of clip art you want first
Clip art can mean a simplified pixel-based illustration or vector artwork made from editable shapes. A trace converts information in the photo into vector objects; a generative method may reinterpret the image rather than follow its features exactly.

A raster image remains pixel-based; a vector master is the appropriate choice when you need editable shapes that can scale. The best method and settings depend on the photo and intended style—there is no universally optimal preset or color count.

Start with a clear source photo
Crop around the subject and remove distracting background elements or visual noise when they interfere with the result. Dust, scratches, and colored backgrounds can make tracing harder, so address them before tracing if they obscure important edges.
- Choose a photo with a recognizable main subject and clear edges.
- Crop tightly enough to reduce irrelevant background information.
- Clean up distractions such as dust, scratches, or background colors when they interfere with the subject.
- Decide whether you want simplified color shapes, a black-and-white result, or a generative stylization.
Method 1: Trace the photo in Illustrator
Illustrator Image Trace turns a placed raster image into vector artwork. Use it when you want editable shapes that follow the source image, then inspect and refine the result rather than assuming the automatic trace is finished artwork.

- Choose File > Place and add the photo to the Illustrator document.
- Open Window > Image Trace, select a starting preset, and adjust the available tracing controls for the image and intended style.
- Review the resulting shapes. Remove unwanted regions and adjust the artwork until the silhouette and important details remain legible at the intended display size.
- Keep an editable vector master if you need scalable shapes, and export a raster copy if the destination requires a pixel image.
Tracing speed depends on image resolution. If you want to return to the source image, Illustrator’s Image Trace workflow includes an option to release the trace. Simplifying the photo before tracing can reduce distracting detail, but do not assume that a particular preset or color count will suit every image.
Method 2: Trace the photo in Inkscape
Inkscape provides bitmap tracing as an alternative for creating vector artwork. Its documented tracing workflow includes color-based tracing and path simplification to reduce nodes. As with Illustrator, treat the trace as a starting point and check whether the important shapes read clearly.

- Import the photo and keep the original available while working.
- Open Path > Trace Bitmap and choose a tracing approach that suits the image, such as color tracing for colored artwork.
- Apply the trace and inspect the resulting paths against the source.
- Remove unwanted regions, simplify paths where appropriate, and check that simplification has not damaged important contours.
- Keep the vector artwork for uses that require scalable shapes; export a raster copy if needed for the destination.
Method 3: Generate a stylized interpretation in Illustrator
Illustrator Concept to Vector offers a generative route from a photo to stylized vector artwork. Unlike Image Trace, which follows source-image features, Concept to Vector may reinterpret or alter the image. Choose it when that creative transformation is desirable rather than when you need a close trace of the photo.
Review the generated result for recognizable shapes and details, then refine it for the intended use. Do not treat the generated artwork as a faithful conversion of every source feature.

Make the result look like clip art
A clip-art look generally depends on simpler, more legible shapes than a photograph contains. Illustrator’s documented color vectorization options include a posterized appearance and a control for color count; the available controls vary by product interface, so do not assume desktop and iPad controls are identical.
- Simplify color and shape. Remove detail that does not help identify the subject.
- Prioritize the silhouette. Make sure the outer shape remains recognizable at the intended size.
- Inspect and clean up. Delete unwanted regions and adjust shapes that make the subject hard to read.
- Test at the intended size. A trace that looks detailed when enlarged may not be legible when used small.
