An STL file is a 3D mesh, not a ready-made 2D laser-cut profile. In Autodesk Fusion, choose the contour you need, derive it from the mesh with a section sketch, fit usable sketch curves, then export that sketch as a DXF. Confirm the plane and units, and check with your laser-control software or fabrication provider whether the resulting file suits your workflow.

What the conversion involves
An STL describes a 3D surface as a mesh. A DXF for laser cutting is produced from sketch geometry, so conversion means deriving the intended 2D contour from the mesh and exporting that sketch—not simply changing the file extension.
The mesh section tool creates a sketch section line where a chosen plane intersects the mesh body. The section plane determines the contour, so position it to match the profile you intend to cut. Autodesk describes this workflow as a way to reverse-engineer a mesh.

Fusion workflow: STL mesh to DXF
- Insert the STL as a mesh body. In Fusion, use the mesh tools to insert the STL. The starting point is a mesh body; do not assume the STL has already become editable sketch or solid geometry.
- Choose the section plane. Decide which planar contour you want, then position a plane so its intersection with the mesh represents that outline.
- Create a mesh section sketch. In the Design workspace, use the Mesh tab’s Create Mesh Section Sketch tool. Select the mesh body and section plane, position the section, and confirm. Fusion creates the section line in a sketch, which you can edit.
- Fit sketch curves to the section. Edit the section sketch and use Fit Curves To Mesh Section to create sketch profiles matching the section line. Inspect the fitted curves and keep the intended contour; fitting does not guarantee that every result is suitable for every laser workflow.
- Export the sketch as DXF. In the browser, right-click the sketch and choose Export DXF or Save As DXF. In the export dialog, define the units and visible geometry, then save.
- Check the DXF in its receiving workflow. Confirm that it contains the intended outline and the expected units. Check machine or fabrication-provider requirements separately; a successful export does not establish compatibility with every cutter or controller.
When to use Project/Include instead
If the contour you need is available as projectable model geometry, Fusion also supports creating a sketch on a suitable plane and using Create > Project/Include > Project to project desired 2D geometry. Finish the sketch and save it as DXF. Autodesk notes that a sketch on the top or bottom face can project that face’s edges for a laser-cut body.
Use mesh section plus fitted curves when the intended contour must be derived from the STL mesh. Use Project/Include when the desired contour is available as projectable model geometry; do not assume that a mesh section can always be projected like solid edges.

Before using the exported file
- Check that the selected section or projected contour is the one you intend to cut.
- Set and verify export units against a known dimension.
- Inspect the visible geometry included in the DXF.
- Confirm the receiving laser software or fabrication provider accepts the file and its geometry.
- Ask the machine provider about any machine-specific settings or preparation requirements.
Autodesk’s reviewed guidance covers creating and exporting sketch geometry, but does not prescribe kerf compensation, material settings, nesting, or compatibility with every machine. Confirm those production details with the intended machine or fabrication provider.

Can I export an STL directly as a laser-cut DXF?
The documented Fusion workflow derives sketch geometry from the mesh and exports the sketch as DXF. Choose the section or projectable contour you need rather than treating the STL itself as a finished 2D cut profile.

What does a mesh section sketch represent?
It contains a section line where a selected plane intersects a mesh body. Moving or changing the plane changes the contour, so choose a plane that produces the outline you intend.
When should I use Project/Include instead of a mesh section?
Use Project/Include when the desired contour is available as projectable model geometry, such as edges on a suitable body face. Use a mesh section when the contour needs to come from the intersection of a plane and the STL mesh.
Does exporting a DXF mean it will work with my laser cutter?
Not necessarily. Exporting establishes a DXF file from the sketch, but machine and controller requirements vary. Confirm acceptance and preparation requirements with your laser-control software documentation or fabrication provider.
The bottom line
Choose the intended contour and plane, insert the STL as a mesh, create and inspect a mesh section sketch, fit usable curves, then export that sketch as DXF with the right units and visible geometry. Check the result against the requirements of the laser workflow that will receive it.
