Yes—many clip-on earrings can be converted to pierced earrings by removing the clip and attaching a pierced-ear post with a flat pad. For light, structurally sound pieces, you can make the change with jewelry pliers, a suitable post, and jewelry adhesive. Valuable, plated, hollow, curved, fragile, or heavy earrings should go to a professional jeweler for a soldered or welded conversion.
Check whether the earring is suitable
Turn the earring over and inspect the area where the clip is attached. A post needs a reasonably flat, solid surface. Do not begin if the back is badly curved, hollow, cracked, loose, or too small to support a pad.
- Photograph valuable, antique, or sentimental earrings before altering them.
- Consider the earring’s balance as well as its size. A glued post is a light-duty option; a heavy or dangling design may need a soldered post.
- Stop if the metal cracks, plating starts to lift, or the piece becomes unusually hot or discolored during removal.
Materials and tools
- Jewelry pliers or needle-nose pliers
- Flush cutters if the clip must be cut away
- Replacement earring posts with flat pads, earring backs, or a premade post-conversion kit
- Jewelry adhesive or a two-part epoxy made for metal jewelry
- Rubbing alcohol or another appropriate degreaser
- A small file or fine sandpaper
- A stable jig, third-hand tool, or removable putty to hold the post while it cures
Jewelry-making references commonly cite Devcon two-part epoxy and E6000 as examples for attaching components. Follow the product label for surface preparation, ventilation, handling, and cure time; the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions take precedence over general advice.

Remove the clip mechanism
Protect the decorative front and work from the back. Use jewelry pliers to unscrew, unclasp, or bend away the clip. If it cannot be removed intact, cut the clip portion slowly with flush cutters. Thriftanista’s method specifically uses cutters for clip hardware that will not come off another way.

File the remaining metal
After removal, smooth every sharp remnant with a small file or fine sandpaper. A clean, level surface helps the pad sit flat and prevents edges from catching skin or weakening the joint.

Clean and dry the attachment area
Wipe the back with rubbing alcohol, then let it dry completely. Oil, dust, and moisture can prevent the adhesive from bonding.

Choose the post and pad
Select a post and pad that fit the available space. A flat pad usually provides more adhesive contact than a tiny base. Match the post metal to the earring when possible, and consider a professional’s advice if you have sensitive ears or do not know what the metal contains.

Apply adhesive sparingly
Put a small, controlled amount of jewelry adhesive or two-part epoxy on the prepared back or on the pad, as directed by the product. Excess glue can spread onto the visible finish or leave a brittle ridge.

Align the post
Set the post in the center of the pad and hold it straight—ideally at a true 90-degree angle to the earring’s back. Centering affects both comfort and how the earring hangs. Jewelry Style Radar recommends maintaining that right angle while epoxy cures.

Support it during curing
Use a jig, third-hand tool, or putty support so the post cannot rotate or slide. Leave the earring completely undisturbed for the adhesive’s full cure time. Trendolla Jewelry specifies 24 hours for its described method; a product that states a longer cure time requires the longer period.

Inspect before wearing
Once cured, gently check that the post does not rock, the adhesive is hard rather than tacky, and no sharp residue remains. Do not test the joint by pulling forcefully or wear the pair if the post shifts.

What glue should you use?
Use an adhesive intended for jewelry or a two-part epoxy rated for bonding metal components. Jewelry glue is convenient for small, light pieces; epoxy can provide a more substantial bond when mixed and applied correctly. Neither choice makes a glued joint equivalent to a soldered or welded post, especially on a heavy earring.
- Check the label for metal compatibility and the complete cure time.
- Prepare both surfaces exactly as directed.
- Work with ventilation and avoid skin or eye contact.
- Do not substitute hot glue, school glue, or an unidentified household adhesive.
DIY conversion versus a jeweler

When a jeweler is the safer choice
Take the earrings to a qualified jeweler if they are fine jewelry, plated, hollow, curved-backed, fragile vintage pieces, set with expensive stones, or heavy enough to place substantial stress on a glued joint. A jeweler can remove or preserve the original clip, assess whether the post should be soldered or laser-welded, select a compatible post metal, correct alignment, and reinforce a joint that adhesive alone cannot support.
Ask these questions before authorizing the work:
- Can the original clip be preserved?
- Will soldering or laser welding affect the plating, stones, or finish?
- What post metal will be used?
- Is the conversion reversible?
Safety and final checks
- Do not wear the earrings until the adhesive has fully cured.
- Discard or repair the piece if the post rocks, the bond remains soft, or sharp residue is present.
- Do not assume a particular metal grade is safe for sensitive ears; ask a jeweler when the material is unknown.
- There is no universal safe weight limit established for a glued conversion, so use professional judgment for large or unbalanced designs.
The Bottom Line
For a light, flat-backed clip-on, remove the clip, smooth and clean the back, glue on a centered flat-pad post, support it at 90 degrees, and wait at least the adhesive’s stated cure time—24 hours in Trendolla Jewelry’s described method—before wearing. Choose a jeweler for valuable, fragile, plated, hollow, curved, or heavy earrings.
