To convert a hummed idea into MIDI, record a clean voice memo, upload it to an audio-to-MIDI transcription tool, export the MIDI file, then correct timing and notes in your DAW or notation editor. For a browser workflow, start with Klangio Transcription Studio or Songscription. If you want the recording transformed into a musical result as well as MIDI, Melobytes is the closest fit in this list. Desktop users can compare AudioScore Ultimate and WIDI Recognition System.
Prepare A Hum That Transcribes Cleanly
MIDI stores note events, pitch, velocity and timing; it does not store the character of your voice. Your recording therefore needs a clear, single musical line. Hum one melody at a time rather than humming harmony, beatboxing, lyrics and melody together. Keep the phone or microphone a consistent distance from your mouth, avoid heavy room reverb, and leave a short silence before and after the phrase.
- Hum with a steady vowel such as “mm” or “oo” so the pitch remains audible.
- Record each phrase separately if the melody changes register or tempo.
- Tap the intended pulse before recording, or hum to a click if you already know the project tempo.
- Save an unprocessed WAV or another lossless recording when your recorder offers that option; keep the original file in case you need to retrace a bad conversion.
Convert The Recording To MIDI
- Choose the transcription route. Use a browser tool for a quick upload, a desktop application for microphone or batch work, or Melobytes when you want a transformed musical output in addition to MIDI.
- Upload or capture the hum. Select the shortest clean phrase that contains the musical idea. If a service accepts video or social links, an ordinary local audio upload is still easier to diagnose when a result sounds wrong.
- Select the closest source type. Choose vocal, melody, monophonic or single-instrument input when the interface offers it. Do not select a full-band or polyphonic mode for an isolated hum unless the product requires that workflow.
- Run transcription and inspect the notation or piano roll. Look for doubled notes, octave jumps, notes that continue through a breath, and timing that has shifted onto nearby grid lines.
- Export MIDI. Download the MIDI file from the transcription result. Keep any PDF, MusicXML or project export too if you want a visual reference while editing.
- Import the MIDI into your music software. Set the project tempo, choose a simple instrument such as piano, and listen to the MIDI with the original hum muted and unmuted. This reveals whether an error is in the transcription or in your interpretation of the melody.

Songscription For Browser Recordings And Flexible Exports
Songscription runs in a web browser, supports browser recordings and audio or video input, covers vocals among its instrument choices, and exports MIDI, MusicXML, PDF, Guitar Pro files and sheet music. Its free plan lists 30-second transcriptions. Record or upload one humming phrase, identify it as a vocal source if prompted, and use the MIDI export for editing. Songscription does not support batch processing, and full-band or orchestral transcription is not supported, so treat a solo hum as a focused phrase rather than a complete arrangement.

AudioScore Ultimate For Desktop Notation Work
AudioScore Ultimate is a paid Windows and macOS desktop transcription application. It accepts live microphone input, transcribes up to 16 simultaneous instruments or notes, and exports MIDI, MusicXML, NIFF, PhotoScore and PDF files. For humming, use the microphone input or an imported recording, then reduce the transcription to the line you actually want before exporting. Its documented limits describe polyphonic capacity rather than a humming-specific mode, so check how the current version labels vocal input.
WIDI Recognition System For Real-Time Or Batch Desktop Conversion
WIDI Recognition System handles polyphonic audio, drum tracks, real-time transcription and batch conversion of multiple files. It displays notation, and its Professional edition adds the TrueTone piano-roll editor. Use real-time mode when you want to audition a melody through a microphone, or batch mode when you have several separately recorded hums. WIDI is a paid desktop product with a 20-day trial; Windows and macOS editions are listed. The directory does not state a humming-specific preset, so audition each exported passage instead of assuming every ornament will become a separate MIDI note.

Clean The MIDI After Export
A hummed performance contains slides, breaths and small pitch movements that may become extra MIDI events. Edit the result in this order:
- Delete notes created by breaths, mouth noise or room noise.
- Join fragments that belong to one sustained pitch.
- Move obvious octave errors into the intended register.
- Adjust note starts and ends while listening against the original hum.
- Quantize lightly only after the melody feels right; preserve intentional early or late entrances.
- Set velocities manually if the imported notes sound mechanically even.
Use The MIDI In A Creative Arrangement
Start with a neutral piano or sine-like patch so pitch and rhythm remain easy to hear. Duplicate the edited MIDI to try a bass register, a lead sound and a counter-melody, but keep the original track unchanged. If you plan to generate a full arrangement with another service, feed it the cleaned MIDI or a rendered guide audio file only when that service documents support for that input. The tools listed here do not establish identical MIDI-import behavior for every AI music generator, so check the vendor’s current workflow before building a dependent project.

Voice Consent And Usage Terms
Your hum is a voice recording. Get permission from every identifiable contributor before uploading or distributing it, especially when using voice transformation or cloning features. Commercial and personal rights differ by service: Melobytes lists free-use restrictions, while the other transcription products’ entries do not state a universal commercial license for converted MIDI. Read the current product terms for your plan, and confirm whether uploaded recordings may be retained or used for service improvement before sharing someone else’s voice.
