To copy artwork between ibisPaint X illustrations, open the source, choose Selection Area → Copy, return to My Gallery, open the destination, then choose Selection Area → Paste. Use Translate Scale to position or resize the result. This documented workflow copies the illustration as combined artwork—not as a set of separately editable layers.
Copy and paste between two artworks
- Open the illustration you want to copy from.
- Tap Selection Area. Select the whole canvas or the portion you need.
- Tap Copy and wait for the “Copied to clipboard” message.
- Tap Back, then choose Back to My Gallery.
- Open the destination illustration.
- Tap Selection Area → Paste. Opening the destination alone does not paste the copied content; you must choose Paste.
- Choose Translate Scale to move or resize the pasted image. Check its edges and placement before confirming.
That is the gallery round trip described in ibisPaint’s copy-and-paste tutorial. The tutorial describes the source illustration as having its layers combined for the operation, so treat the result as a composite image rather than expecting each original layer to remain independently editable.
Copy only part of a drawing
Open Selection Area, choose an available selection method—such as a rectangle or lasso—and select the part you want before tapping Copy. Selection options and behavior can vary by app release, so check the controls shown in your version.

- If antialiased edges look clipped, try selecting slightly beyond the object.
- Check whether the selection contains empty transparent space; it may come along with the copied area.
- If an unwanted background appears, undo and make a tighter selection, or hide the background layer before copying when appropriate.
- Use Translate Scale after pasting to correct size and placement.
These are practical cleanup tips, not special requirements of the documented workflow. For a clean object without its background, a transparent source layer is often a better starting point than copying a composite of the full illustration.
Need an editable duplicate? Duplicate the layer
If your goal is to preserve a layer’s transparency and editability within the same artwork, use the layer command instead of Selection Area copy and paste:
- Open the Layer window.
- Select the layer or folder you want to duplicate.
- Open Add Special Layer.
- Tap Duplicate Folder (Layer).
The command is labeled Duplicate Folder when a folder is selected. ibisPaint documents this route in its Layer Window guide. It duplicates the selected layer or folder; it is not the same as transferring the entire illustration to a different artwork.

Want a merged snapshot instead?
Add Layer from Canvas adds a combined version of the artwork as a new layer. Use it when you want a composite snapshot while retaining the original layers beneath it. It does not turn the combined snapshot back into separate editable source layers.

Copy with a keyboard
ibisPaint documents Copy, Cut, and Paste shortcuts for iPhone running iOS 14 or later, iPad running iPadOS 14 or later, and Android devices connected to a Bluetooth or USB keyboard. The exact assignments should be checked in the app rather than assumed to match desktop conventions.
To view them, tap Back → Settings → Show Keyboard Shortcuts. The shortcut list can also be displayed with Shift + /, according to the official keyboard-shortcuts tutorial. Availability and controls can differ by platform and app version.

Copy Pen is for cloning on the canvas
Copy Pen is a separate tool for copying image content directly to another spot on the canvas; it is not the same as putting an object on the clipboard and pasting it into another artwork. ibisPaint documents two variants in its Copy Pen tutorial:
- Copy Pen (Relative) is suited to copying relative image content, such as retouching or repairing an area.
- Copy Pen (Fixed) is suited to repeating a particular object or motif, such as leaves. Its settings include copy zoom and jitter angle.
Choose Copy Pen for in-place cloning, layer duplication for an editable duplicate, and Selection Area copy/paste for moving selected or visible artwork between illustrations.
If copy or paste does not work as expected
- Copy or Cut is disabled: Check that the intended layer is active and that you have made a useful selection. Update the app and try again. Historical release notes record fixes for Copy and Cut problems involving certain brushes, including Outline, and vector-layer copying; that history is one possible explanation, not a diagnosis of every failure. See the version 13.0.5 notes.
- The wrong content is copied: Recheck the selection and active layer. If the result includes too much, hide layers that should not contribute or make a tighter selection. If you need just one editable layer, use Duplicate Folder (Layer) rather than copying a composite.
- The pasted object includes an unwanted background or empty margin: Undo, adjust the selection, and check which visible layers contribute to the copied composite. For transparent asset reuse, the Layer Window guide documents saving a selected layer or folder as a transparent PNG.
- The pasted item is misplaced or the wrong size: Use Translate Scale before confirming. Zoom the canvas in for fine positioning and inspect the edges.
- You expected the clipboard to retain separate layers: Use layer duplication for a layer or folder in the same artwork. The documented gallery transfer is a combined-image workflow.
ibisPaint X is the free mobile edition listed for iPhone/iPad and Android on the official product page. The copy-and-paste tutorial does not identify ordinary Copy or Paste as a premium-only feature, so you should not need to upgrade just to use this basic workflow. The app is also available in other editions and platforms; labels and menus may differ.

Move content to another app
The documented copy-and-paste steps above cover transfers between ibisPaint artworks; they do not guarantee that a clipboard image will paste correctly into every other app or preserve layers. For a single layer or folder that you need to reuse elsewhere, the Layer Window guide provides a way to save it as a transparent PNG. A PNG is an image, not an editable package of ibisPaint layers.

Can I copy an entire drawing in ibisPaint X?
Yes. Use Selection Area → Copy, return to My Gallery, open the other artwork, then choose Selection Area → Paste. ibisPaint’s documented workflow treats the copied illustration as combined artwork, not separate editable layers.
Can I copy one layer without flattening it?
To duplicate a layer or folder within the same artwork, use Layer window → Add Special Layer → Duplicate Folder (Layer). The Selection Area gallery-transfer workflow is for combined artwork.

Choose Translate Scale after tapping Paste, then adjust the size and position before confirming.
Do I need Premium to copy and paste?
The official product page lists ibisPaint X as the free mobile edition, and the copy-and-paste tutorial does not mark ordinary Copy or Paste as premium-only.
What is the difference between Copy Pen and Copy/Paste?
Copy Pen paints copied content directly elsewhere on the canvas. Selection Area → Copy/Paste transfers selected or visible artwork through the clipboard workflow.
