Elmer’s describes two ways to make paint crackle: a quick craft activity with White School Glue, and an antique-look method with Glue-All. In both, brush acrylic paint over glue while it is still wet, then let the layers dry fully. The methods use different glue products and have different sealing instructions, so choose one and follow its sequence.
Choose the crackle method

Elmer’s lists canvas, wood, or another paintable object for the simple activity. Its material guide broadly describes Glue-All for paper, wood, fabric, leather, and ceramics, and school glue for paper, cloth, and crafts. Those descriptions do not establish that every finished surface will withstand heavy use.
What you’ll need
- Choose the glue for your method: Elmer’s White School Glue for the simple activity or Elmer’s Glue-All for the antique-look sequence.
- Acrylic craft paint. For the antique-look finish, choose contrasting base and top colors so the base shows through the cracks.
- A paintbrush and a clean, paintable surface.
Elmer’s names acrylic paint in both procedures. Its simple activity does not prescribe a particular color combination. A purpose-made commercial crackle medium is another option if you prefer a product designed specifically for that effect; Bob Vila’s crackle-paint guide also describes school glue as a lower-cost approach.

- Prepare a paintable surface, such as canvas or wood, and have your acrylic paint and brush ready.
- Brush on a generous coat of Elmer’s White School Glue.
- Let the glue sit for a few minutes, but do not let it dry.
- Brush acrylic paint over the wet glue.
- Leave the piece undisturbed and let the glue and paint dry fully as the crackle develops.
Elmer’s does not specify a sealer for this activity. Its listed “Activity Time: 10 Minutes” is an activity-time estimate, not a promise that the layers will be fully dry in ten minutes.

Method 2: Antique-look finish with Glue-All
- Paint the object with acrylic craft paint in your chosen base color. Let this coat dry.
- Cover the dry base coat with Elmer’s Glue-All.
- While the Glue-All is still wet, brush on a different acrylic color. The base color can show through the cracks.
- Let the crackled layer dry fully.
- Apply another coat of Glue-All as the sealer, as directed in Elmer’s antique-look instructions.
The order matters: the base paint dries first, but the top paint goes on while the Glue-All is wet. The directions do not give a fixed drying duration, so allow the piece to dry completely rather than relying on the activity-time estimate from Elmer’s separate craft project. The instructions do not establish waterproofing or furniture-grade durability.
Adjusting the crackle effect
Bob Vila’s general DIY guidance says a thinner glue layer tends to create finer cracks, while a thicker layer tends to create larger ones. Treat that as a broad craft guideline rather than a quantified or guaranteed result for Elmer’s glue; the sources do not specify layer thicknesses or promise a particular crack pattern.

Drying and sealing expectations
Both Elmer’s methods rely on the glue and paint drying for the crackle to develop, but neither sets a fixed total drying time. The simple activity does not call for a sealer; the antique-look procedure adds a final Glue-All coat once the crackled paint has dried. Do not assume the resulting surface is waterproof or suited to heavy-use furniture based on these instructions alone.
