Yes—you can create a teal Venetian plaster wall with Modern Masters by tinting either VP100 or VP200, preparing a smooth low-sheen primed surface, applying three thin coats, and sanding only as far as your desired sheen requires. Make a sample board first: the translucent finish produces lighter and darker variations within the teal family, so the finished wall will not exactly match a paint-chip swatch.

Use VP100 for white, pastel, or more opaque mid-tone teal effects. Choose VP200 when you want a deeper teal and a more translucent, marble-like result. The plaster is not scrubbable or water resistant; use the manufacturer’s VP300 topcoat in high-traffic or high-humidity locations, accepting a slight color darkening and satin sheen.
What to buy for a teal Venetian plaster wall
Modern Masters Venetian Plaster is an interior, water-based, low-VOC material applied with a trowel. The core system is a tinted plaster base, a prepared wall, a Japanese Trowel, and optional abrasives or topcoat. The manufacturer lists both tint bases in quart and gallon sizes and gives a general coverage range of 150–200 square feet per gallon on its Venetian Plaster product page.

| Supply | What it does | Selection notes |
|---|---|---|
| VP100 or VP200 Venetian Plaster tint base | Provides the plaster that will be tinted teal | VP100 suits white, pastel, and lighter mid-tone effects; VP200 suits deep colors and highly polished, translucent effects. |
| Modern Masters Japanese Trowel | Spreads, scrapes, and burnishes the plaster | The product page lists a 240 mm size; the MDM-28 application instructions name the Japanese Trowel for the coats. |
| Primer-sealer | Creates a sealed, low-sheen surface | Modern Masters recommends Zinsser BullsEye 1-2-3 and a primer color close to the plaster color. |
| Dry 400-grit and 600-grit sandpaper | Refines the surface and increases sheen | Use 400 grit for a marble-like finish; 600 grit is an optional additional polishing step. |
| Soft or clean damp rags | Remove sanding dust and clean the surface | Use a clean damp rag before VP300, then allow the wall to dry. |
| Low-tack painter’s tape and a razor | Protect adjacent painted surfaces | Cut along tape edges with a razor before removal to reduce the chance of pulling up adjacent paint. |
| VP300 Venetian Plaster Clear Topcoat | Adds protection where the wall faces moisture or heavy contact | Apply only when conditions call for it; the topcoat slightly darkens the color and dries satin. |
Confirm local retailer availability, the tint formula, and package size before buying. The manufacturer’s documents do not publish a dedicated teal formula or guarantee that a particular store’s formula will reproduce a swatch exactly.
Choose the right tint base for teal
Both bases can be tinted, but they do not create the same visual starting point. Titanium-dioxide-containing VP100 is intended for white, light pastel, and opaque mid-tone colors. VP200 is an ultra-deep base that can develop a polished, marble-like effect; additional polishing increases its translucency.
| Choose | Best fit | Visual trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| VP100 | Light teal, pastel teal, or a more opaque mid-tone wall | More body and coverage in lighter color families, with less of the deep translucent effect associated with VP200. |
| VP200 | Deep teal or a dramatic marble-like finish | Greater depth and translucency, especially after polishing; highs and lows become more noticeable. |
Ask the paint retailer to tint the selected base using the manufacturer’s color formula for the closest teal available. The MDM-28 technical sheet permits a maximum of 8 ounces of colorant in either tint base and directs customers to use the formula for a typical pastel or ultra-deep paint base. For general tinting instructions, it says to contact a Rust-Oleum sales representative. Because the finish is translucent, the selected color will not match exactly: trowel marks and layer thickness create related light and dark areas.

Repair and flatten the surface
Venetian plaster is thin enough to reveal ridges, holes, and abrupt transitions beneath it. Fill cracks and nail holes, sand repairs flush, and remove dust. The finished substrate should be smooth and sealed rather than glossy or porous.

Prime for a compatible, low-sheen base
Apply a primer-sealer with a low-sheen finish. Modern Masters recommends Zinsser BullsEye 1-2-3 and suggests tinting the primer toward the plaster color. A related undercoat reduces the visual impact of tiny gaps in coverage and gives the translucent teal a more consistent foundation. Allow the primer to dry according to its label before plastering.
Protect adjoining finishes
Mask trim and previously painted surfaces with low-tack tape. Before pulling the tape, score its edge with a razor; this helps prevent the new or existing paint from delaminating along the tape line.
Check for lead-paint risk
If scraping, sanding, or removing old coatings could disturb lead paint, stop and follow lead-safe procedures. The MDM-28 sheet warns about lead-dust exposure and advises a NIOSH-approved respirator, HEPA-vacuum cleanup, and wet mopping. Its safety guidance points readers to EPA lead resources. Do not dry-sand a suspect coating without appropriate containment and protection.
Tint and test the teal
- Tell the retailer whether you are using VP100 or VP200 and request the corresponding teal color formula.
- Keep the colorant addition within the MDM-28 limit of 8 ounces maximum per tint base.
- Mix the tinted plaster thoroughly and compare it with your sample board, not just the wet material in the container.
- Apply a complete test panel, including the texture coat, final skim, sanding, burnishing choice, and VP300 if you intend to use it.
- Judge the panel under the room’s actual lighting. Record the base, colorant amount, trowel angle, sanding grit, and topcoat decision so you can reproduce the result.
Do not assume a teal paint swatch is a promise of a flat, uniform wall color. Modern Masters explains in its Venetian Plaster brochure that the translucent finish creates highs and lows in the same color family.
Apply the three plaster coats
Modern Masters describes Venetian Plaster as “a finishing technique using thin layers of plaster applied with a spatula or trowel and then burnished to create a smooth surface with the illusion of depth and texture.” The following sequence follows the MDM-28 technical sheet. Work in manageable sections and keep each coat thin; heavy deposits extend drying and make later polishing uneven.

1. First skim coat
- Load the Japanese Trowel with a small amount of tinted plaster.
- Hold the trowel at a low angle and spread a thin, even coat across the primed wall.
- Raise the trowel angle to scrape away excess material and flatten ridges.
- Leave the coat to dry for about one hour under the sheet’s reference conditions.
2. Skip-trowel texture coat
- Use a low trowel angle and light pressure to place irregular, overlapping patches.
- Vary the direction and length of the passes so the surface does not form a repeating pattern.
- Lightly smooth down sharp peaks without flattening all of the movement.
- Allow about one to two hours for drying before the final coat.
3. Final skim coat
- Repeat the first skim-coat method, bridging the texture coat with a thin layer.
- Scrape excess at a higher angle and soften obvious lines while the material is workable.
- Let the finished plaster dry for about one hour before sanding or polishing.
The published intervals are approximate, not guarantees. Modern Masters’ general guidance is one to two hours between coats, with drying affected by coat thickness, temperature, and humidity. The observations in MDM-28 were made at 70°F and 50% relative humidity; cooler temperatures or higher humidity lengthen drying and curing. If the surface feels cool, soft, or tacky, wait rather than trapping moisture beneath another coat.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSand and burnish to control sheen
Sanding changes both reflectivity and the apparent translucency of teal. For a marble-like finish, sand in circular motions with dry 400-grit paper. Remove the dust with a soft rag, then use 600-grit paper if you want a higher sheen. Keep pressure even and avoid cutting through to the primer, especially on edges and raised texture.
After sanding, vigorous burnishing with the trowel or the flat side of a clean putty knife can create a very high sheen. Modern Masters does not recommend vigorous burnishing for light colors. On teal, treat burnishing as an optional, sample-tested choice: it can increase the depth and contrast of a VP200 finish, but the exact visual effect depends on base, colorant, layer thickness, pressure, and lighting.
Stop at the surface appropriate to your design. A suede or stone appearance does not require burnishing or polishing. Overworking one area can create an isolated shiny patch that is difficult to blend into the surrounding wall.
Decide whether the wall needs VP300 protection
Uncoated Venetian Plaster is not scrubbable or water resistant, although the material is repairable. In a low-risk room where the wall will receive little contact, you may leave it uncoated after the finish has cured. Bathrooms, splash-prone areas, entryways, and walls that will be touched frequently are the situations for which Modern Masters recommends VP300 Venetian Plaster Clear Topcoat. The MDM-28 sheet states that other protective topcoats cannot be used to protect this system.

Apply VP300 correctly
- Wipe all sanding dust from the cured plaster with a clean damp rag.
- Wait until the surface is dry.
- Spread VP300 in a very thin layer with a Japanese Trowel or clean putty knife held at approximately a 60-degree angle.
- Do not roll, brush, or spray the topcoat; the VP300 sheet specifies trowel application.
- Allow it to dry under the conditions stated on its technical sheet. Expect a slight darkening of the teal and a satin sheen.
The VP300 technical sheet lists approximately 140–155 square feet per quart. Make a topcoated sample before committing because the protective film changes the color and reflectivity.

| Figure | What it means | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 150–200 sq. ft. per gallon | Current product-page coverage range for Venetian Plaster | Manufacturer figure; actual use varies with wall, technique, coat thickness, and waste. |
| Approximately 170–190 sq. ft. per gallon | Practical MDM-28 coverage estimate | Assumes 15% material loss; it is not an independent test. |
| About 1–2 hours | Typical drying interval between plaster coats | MDM-28 observations were at 70°F and 50% relative humidity; cooler or more humid conditions take longer. |
| Approximately 140–155 sq. ft. per quart | VP300 topcoat coverage | Manufacturer estimate from MDM-29; drying depends on conditions. |
Measure the wall, divide by the realistic coverage range, and buy enough for waste and your sample board. A heavily textured application or repeated corrections can consume more than the published range, while a very thin, controlled application may use less.
Troubleshoot common problems
The teal looks too flat
Flat color usually means the sample did not include the same texture, sanding, or light direction as the wall. Compare a complete panel. If you want more depth, test VP200 or a carefully polished section rather than adding arbitrary colorant beyond the 8-ounce limit.
The wall has obvious trowel ridges
Let the coat dry, then sand gently with 400 grit. Do not chase every mark while the plaster is wet; repeated wet corrections can create thicker spots and uneven translucency.
Gloss varies from section to section
Uneven pressure, overlapping dry edges, or concentrated burnishing can produce isolated sheen. Work in consistent sections, keep the trowel clean, and use the same sanding sequence across the wall. A sample board helps establish how much variation is intentional.

The plaster is still soft after the stated time
Drying time changes with thickness, temperature, and humidity. Increase ventilation without forcing dust onto the surface, and wait until the material is firm before sanding or recoating.
The topcoat changes the teal more than expected
VP300 slightly darkens the color and dries satin. Test it on the finished sample first; if the change is unacceptable, reconsider the room’s exposure and whether an uncoated, repairable finish is suitable.
Care and future repairs
Because the plaster is not scrubbable or water resistant without protection, keep routine cleaning gentle and avoid abrasive products. In a protected area, follow the topcoat manufacturer’s cured-film care guidance. Minor damage can be repaired, but a patch may show a different sheen or trowel pattern until it is blended and polished to match the surrounding surface. Keep a labeled sample board and a small amount of the tinted base for future color and technique reference.
