A secret garden is a deliberately secluded place to sit, look, and linger—not necessarily a fully enclosed room. Start by identifying the sightline that makes your garden feel exposed, then use a carefully placed combination of plants, trellis, trees, or other screens to interrupt that view while preserving the light and outlook you value.

This guide uses “secret garden” in the practical horticultural sense. The same phrase is also associated with Frances Hodgson Burnett’s novel, but the design decisions below are for creating a private outdoor retreat.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDecide what needs to be private
Privacy is a relationship between a place and a particular view. A garden may feel exposed from an upstairs window, a neighbouring path, a driveway, or one seat across the street, while remaining private from other directions. Solving that specific exposure usually produces a lighter, more welcoming garden than building a solid barrier around the whole plot.

Map the important sightlines
- Stand where you hope to sit and note every angle from which people can see you.
- Repeat the exercise from the windows, paths, gates, and neighbouring spaces that look into the garden.
- Mark the lowest point at which a screen would interrupt each unwanted view. A partial or angled screen may be enough.
- Record the views you want to keep, such as trees, a long garden axis, or open sky.
Draw these observations on a simple plan or take photographs from each position. The result is a privacy brief: which sightlines must be softened, which can remain open, and where a screen can stand without taking more space than necessary.
Balance shelter with light and outlook
Screening changes wind, shade, and the way a garden feels as well as what neighbours can see. Gareth Richards, Associate Editor of The Garden at the RHS, puts the trade-off this way: “Well thought-out screening can transform the feel of your outdoor space: try to create a balance between shelter and privacy while not blocking too much light and views out.”
Use a permeable lower screen, a narrow tree, a pleached tree, or climbers on a trellis when you need privacy without a tall, opaque wall. A screen can be denser on the viewing side and more open toward the view you want to retain.
Audit the site before choosing plants or structures
Begin with the garden you have rather than a shopping list. The same screen can thrive in one location and fail in another because of soil, exposure, roots, or access.
Check sun, shade, wind, and soil
- Observe the proposed planting line through a sunny day and a shaded day. Note seasonal changes if you can.
- Identify prevailing wind and places where a screen would need to provide shelter as well as visual cover.
- Check whether soil is heavy, free-draining, acidic, alkaline, compacted, or shallow. If you do not know, use a soil test suited to your region.
- Look for paving, walls, drains, soakaways, cables, and narrow access routes that limit roots or make future pruning difficult.
- Measure the available width at ground level and overhead. Mature height and spread, not the size of a newly bought plant, determine whether a choice will fit.
Allow for local rules
UK-based RHS guidance notes that planning rules, highway or public-right-of-way requirements, covenants, conservation-area controls, and high-hedge definitions can affect screening. Check the rules that apply to your property and location before constructing a fence, planting a boundary hedge, or blocking a shared view. Requirements differ by country and municipality, so do not assume a UK rule applies elsewhere.

Compare the main screening approaches
No single method is best for every secret garden. Compare the effect you need with the room, time, and maintenance you can provide.
| Approach | Privacy and shelter | Light and views | Space and establishment | Maintenance and cautions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hedge or shrub screen | Can form a continuous, soft boundary once established | Density can be adjusted through species and pruning | Requires soil width for mature roots and spread; establishment time varies by plant | Regular trimming and watering may be needed; choose for local soil and exposure |
| Trellis with climbers | Creates targeted privacy on a narrow line and softens a fence | Open trellis admits filtered light and can frame a view | Useful where ground space is limited; climbers need support and time to cover it | Train and prune growth; confirm the support can carry the mature plant |
| Narrow or pleached trees | Raises privacy to the level where overlooking occurs and can shelter a seating area | Leaves the lower garden and selected vistas open | Needs adequate rooting volume and access for planting and pruning | Ongoing shaping is part of the design; account for roots near structures and drains |
| Permeable lower screen | Reduces views and wind at sitting height without a wall effect | Maintains more sky, daylight, and air movement | Often fits smaller spaces than a full-height barrier | May need combining with taller planting where overlooking comes from above |
| Clump-forming bamboo | Can provide a dense, upright screen in suitable conditions | Vertical growth can preserve some lateral views | Requires enough root space or a suitable container | RHS guidance specifically recommends clump-forming types to avoid invasive spread; check local suitability |
| Fence or solid panel | Immediate, predictable visual screening | Can remove light, views, and air movement if overused | Needs sound posts, foundations, and access for installation | Check ownership, boundary, planning, and maintenance responsibilities before building |
These are design categories rather than guarantees of performance. Mature dimensions, growth rate, hardiness, and maintenance depend on the chosen species, local climate, and site conditions.
Choose a living screen that fits its mature size
Match the plant to the place
Select screening plants by their required mature height and footprint, soil type, exposure, available room, and the maintenance you can sustain. Shrubs, trees, grasses, and bamboo can all contribute, but a plant that outgrows its position will eventually create shade, root pressure, or an unmanageable pruning burden.
Use the plant’s mature information from a reliable local nursery or horticultural authority, not the height of the specimen in its pot. Where a privacy problem occurs only above a fence, a narrow tree or trained form may solve it with less ground-level bulk than a wide hedge.
Protect buildings, drains, and access
Before digging, locate drains, soakaways, utility routes, walls, and foundations. Roots and trunk growth can create conflicts, while a dense planting line can make gutters, windows, fences, and paths hard to reach. Leave room for a person and tools to prune, inspect, and repair adjacent structures.

Manage bamboo carefully
Bamboo is not automatically interchangeable with other screening plants. The RHS recommends choosing clump-forming bamboo to avoid invasive spread. Even a non-running type needs a position, container, or root-management plan that suits its eventual size, plus enough water during establishment. Check that the selected plant is appropriate for your local climate.

Limited soil does not rule out a secret garden. Raised beds and containers can provide the rooting volume that paving or poor ground lacks, while keeping the screen in the exact place the sightline requires.
Use containers strategically
Place large containers at the edge of a seating nook, beside a gate, or along the view from a window. The RHS notes that larger containers do not dry out as quickly as smaller pots, which can make them more forgiving for screening plants. They are still heavy when planted and watered, so check the strength of balconies, roofs, and paved surfaces before positioning them.
Combine vertical and overhead elements
Climbers on garden trellis panels can soften fencing and add privacy without consuming a wide bed. A pergola can define a destination and carry climbers overhead, while a small tree or suitable bamboo in a raised bed adds height. Keep enough clearance for doors, paths, gutters, and neighbouring access, and plan how you will prune growth that reaches above the structure.
Layer instead of building one bulky wall
A narrow trellis, a mid-height shrub, and a seat-side container can interrupt several sightlines while preserving a view beyond. Layering also makes a small garden feel deeper: the eye moves through foreground foliage toward an intentionally framed opening.

Design the destination, not only the barrier
Privacy becomes useful when it leads to somewhere. Choose the point at which you want to pause, then shape the screening around that destination.
Install a real place to sit
Position a bench or chair where the privacy brief is most effective, rather than automatically placing it against a boundary. Test the seat at different times of day before fixing it permanently. A spot that is private at midday may be exposed from a neighbouring window in the evening.
Keep movement simple
Create a clear route from the house or main path to the seat. A slight change of direction, an arch, or a screen beside the entrance can produce a sense of discovery without making the garden difficult to navigate. Keep paving stable and wide enough for the people who will use it.
Add wildlife value
RHS sanctuary advice suggests wildlife-friendly planting as an optional part of a garden retreat. Include a mixture of forms and flowering periods that suit your region, and provide water or shelter only where you can maintain it responsibly. Wildlife planting should support the privacy design rather than create an impenetrable thicket that blocks paths and windows.

Follow this installation sequence
- Write the privacy brief. List the people or places you need to screen, the views you want to keep, and the location of the proposed seat.
- Measure the site. Record the planting width, overhead clearance, sun and shade, wind exposure, soil conditions, and nearby structures or drains.
- Select a screening category. Decide whether a hedge, trellis and climber, narrow tree, permeable lower screen, container, bamboo, or a combination addresses the sightline with the least loss of light.
- Verify mature dimensions. Check local horticultural information for the exact plant or cultivar, including mature height, spread, soil tolerance, exposure, roots, and pruning needs.
- Confirm permissions and boundaries. Check local planning, highway, covenant, conservation-area, and high-hedge requirements where they may apply.
- Prepare the ground or containers. Remove competing weeds, improve the planting medium only as appropriate for the chosen plants, and ensure containers or raised beds can support the eventual load.
- Install support before planting climbers. Fix trellis, posts, or a pergola securely, with enough clearance for stems and future maintenance.
- Plant and water for establishment. Follow the supplier’s regional planting guidance, protect plants from damage, and keep access to the soil and irrigation points.
- Place the seat and test the view. Sit down from the intended position and inspect the sightline at the times you use the garden. Adjust movable containers or furniture before making structural changes.
- Set a maintenance plan. Decide who will prune, water, tie in climbers, inspect supports, and monitor roots, drains, and paths as the screen matures.
Troubleshoot common design failures
The screen blocks too much light
Thin the planting where appropriate, raise the privacy line with a narrow or pleached tree, or replace a solid section with permeable trellis. Do not solve a single sightline by enclosing the entire garden.

The seat is still overlooked
Return to the standing and seated sightline exercise. The missing screen may need to be angled, moved closer to the seat, or raised only at the level of the overlooking window. A second, offset layer can work better than making the first barrier uniformly taller.
Plants struggle after planting
Recheck soil moisture, drainage, exposure, root competition, and whether the plant suits the local climate. A larger container can reduce how quickly the growing medium dries, but it does not correct an unsuitable species or a waterlogged position.
Growth becomes unmanageable
Compare the plant’s mature size with the available space and the pruning time you can realistically provide. Remove or relocate a poor choice while it is small rather than repeatedly cutting a plant that naturally wants to occupy more room.
Roots or structures become a concern
Stop expanding the planting line until you have checked the location of drains, soakaways, foundations, and utilities. Seek local professional advice when roots, boundary ownership, or structural safety are uncertain.
Maintain the feeling of a secret garden
Maintenance should preserve the original sightline, not turn the garden into a constant battle for control. Inspect supports, ties, fences, paths, and drainage as plants grow. Prune to keep the intended opening and seat accessible, remove damaged or crossing growth, and adjust watering as containers and raised beds mature. Revisit the garden from the key viewpoints each season; changing foliage, neighbouring growth, and the sun’s angle can create a new exposure that a one-time installation will not solve.
A successful retreat is therefore not the tallest screen available. It is a site-specific arrangement that blocks the views that matter, keeps the light and outlook you value, fits the soil and space, and gives you a comfortable reason to use the garden.
