Yes—you can create and host a simple website with Canva without writing code or arranging separate hosting. The quickest workflow is: choose a website template, replace its content, add working links and navigation, preview it on mobile, then publish it to a Canva URL or custom domain.
Canva works especially well for portfolios, painting services, event pages, digital menus, résumés, campaign landing pages, and other mostly static sites. It is not a strong replacement for a full ecommerce store, large blog, membership site, or custom web application.
Before you start
Gather the material your site will need:
- A clear purpose, such as showing a painting portfolio or collecting commission inquiries.
- Your headline, short introduction, contact details, and call to action.
- Optimized photos, logo, brand colors, and social links.
- URLs for booking, email, forms, maps, stores, or other destinations.
- An optional domain name if you want a branded web address.
For a fast launch, begin with one page. Add separate pages only when the content genuinely needs sections such as About, Services, Portfolio, and Contact.
Step 1: Choose a website template
Open Canva in a browser or the app and search for Website, Website Builder, Portfolio Website, Landing Page, or Microsite. Choose a template that already resembles the site you want, or start with a blank website.
#1 Best Overall
Canva describes its website builder as a visual, drag-and-drop editor with templates, headings, images, buttons, galleries, and forms. See Canva’s website hosting overview and drag-and-drop builder guide.
How to choose well
- Look for a clear headline area and one obvious primary action.
- Choose a layout that matches the amount of content you actually have.
- Check that text has strong contrast with its background.
- Prefer simple layouts if speed, accessibility, and mobile readability matter.
- Decide whether a one-page site is enough or whether visitors need separate pages.
A template is only a visual starting point. You still need to replace its placeholder text, images, links, contact information, and calls to action.
Step 2: Replace the content and establish a clear hierarchy
Click text elements to edit them, upload your own images, and adjust colors, fonts, spacing, and alignment. Replace the template’s:

- Site name or logo
- Main headline and supporting copy
- Photos, illustrations, and graphics
- Buttons and calls to action
- Services, portfolio items, testimonials, or event details
- Contact details and social links
- Footer information
For a simple painting portfolio or service site, this structure is usually enough:
- Headline: Say what you paint or what visitors can commission.
- Short explanation: Identify who you serve and what makes your work relevant.
- Primary CTA: Use an action such as “View the portfolio,” “Request a commission,” or “Book a consultation.”
- Proof and detail: Show selected work, services, credentials, process, schedule, or testimonials.
- Contact section: Provide an email, form, booking link, or social profile.
Design rules that improve the result
- Use one primary action instead of several competing buttons.
- Keep paragraphs short and use descriptive button labels rather than “Click here.”
- Do not place essential information only inside an image.
- Keep fonts, colors, spacing, and alignment consistent.
- Maintain readable contrast and do not rely on color alone to communicate meaning.
- Resize oversized images where practical so pages load efficiently.
- Add descriptive image text or alt text where Canva provides that option.
Free users may encounter Pro images, graphics, fonts, or other assets. Replace marked assets with free alternatives, or check whether a paid plan or separate license is required. Commercial use also depends on Canva’s content license and the specific asset. Consult Canva’s commercial-use guidance.
Step 3: Add links, navigation, and a clear call to action
A site is not finished because it looks attractive. Visitors must be able to complete the next action.

To add a link in Canva:
- Select the text, button, image, or other element.
- Choose the link or chain icon.
- Enter an external URL or select another page in the site.
- Apply the link and test it in Preview mode.
Canva’s website tutorial covers linking elements, previewing, and publishing.

- Email and telephone links
- Booking or consultation pages
- Social profiles
- Google Maps
- External forms and newsletter signups
- Downloadable résumés, brochures, or price lists
- Store or payment pages
- Other pages within the Canva website
For a one-page site, navigation can point to sections on the same page. For a multi-page site, use clear page names and a consistent navigation treatment. Canva’s portfolio guidance explains page titles, navigation, page paths, and related settings.
Conversion check
- Can a visitor understand the site’s purpose within a few seconds?
- Is there one obvious next step?
- Do buttons work on a phone?
- Does the contact method open correctly?
- Is the form short enough to complete on mobile?
- Does every navigation item reach the intended destination?
Decorative buttons, buried contact details, long text blocks, and too many competing actions can make a polished page ineffective.
Step 4: Preview on mobile and configure settings
Choose Preview and inspect the site in desktop, tablet, and mobile views. Canva describes its websites as mobile-friendly, but you should not assume that every edited template will look right on every screen.
Mobile checklist
- Does the headline wrap naturally?
- Is the first CTA visible without excessive scrolling?
- Are buttons large enough to tap?
- Are text blocks readable?
- Do images crop in the intended place?
- Does navigation work?
- Do sections stack in a sensible order?
- Are external links and forms easy to use?
- Does the footer remain usable?
Review the available website settings before publishing. Depending on the design, account, and current Canva interface, these may include:

Canva provides domain and website settings information, but its SEO controls are basic. A page title and description can improve how a site is presented and discovered; they do not guarantee indexing, rankings, or traffic.

Public or private?
For a client review, internal resource, private event, or restricted project, disable search visibility when appropriate and consider password protection. Canva identifies password protection as an option for limited-audience websites. Do not assume that a password-protected page makes every third-party form or embedded service private.
Step 5: Publish the website
When the design is ready, select Publish Website. Canva may present options for:
- A free Canva URL
- A domain purchased through Canva
- An existing domain connected to Canva, if your account is eligible
Customize the URL slug where available, review the settings, and select Publish. Then open the live address in a private browser window and test it again on a phone.
Free Canva URL
The free option uses a Canva-provided my.canva.site address. Canva’s current Terms of Use state that free users may publish up to five Canva Sites using free Canva URLs. These URLs include Canva attribution, so they are suitable for personal projects, prototypes, portfolios, and events but may look less professional for an established business.
Custom domain
You can buy a domain through Canva or connect one you already own, subject to the plan and account eligibility shown in the publishing workflow. Canva’s current guidance identifies eligible paid routes for connecting an existing domain, but plan names and entitlements can change. Check the publishing dialog for your account rather than relying on an old tutorial.
A domain purchased through Canva is part of an all-in-one workflow, but it still has an annual cost and domain availability varies. Canva’s Terms state that Canva acts as a reseller through Tucows for domains purchased through its service. If you already have a live website, do not remove it until the new connection has been verified.
Rank #4
Final live-site test
- Open the published URL.
- Check the spelling of the domain and contact details.
- Confirm HTTPS and the browser security indicator.
- Test every button, navigation item, form, download, and external link.
- Check the mobile layout again.
- Review the page title, description, favicon, and social preview.
- Confirm search visibility or password protection is set as intended.
Canva allows published sites to be edited and republished, so publishing is not necessarily permanent.

Canva separates free website publishing from paid features:
| Option | Best for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Free Canva URL | Personal projects, portfolios, events, and prototypes | Canva URL and attribution; free users are limited to five sites under the current Terms |
| Paid Canva plan | Users who want eligible domain connections, Pro assets, brand tools, or additional website features | Subscription cost; exact entitlements vary |
| Domain purchased through Canva | Users wanting one Canva-based design, domain, and publishing workflow | Annual domain cost and less registrar independence |
| Existing domain | Businesses and professionals keeping an established web address | Eligibility, verification, and DNS configuration may be required |
Current Terms indicate that paid subscribers can publish unlimited sites to free Canva URLs and connect up to five existing domains; Education and Nonprofit subscribers have different limits. Because account rules can change, confirm the entitlement shown in Canva before purchasing.

Canva is a strong fit for:
- Painting portfolios and résumé sites
- Simple artist or service pages
- Event information and invitations
- Digital menus
- Campaign landing pages
- Temporary or fast-launch websites
- Internal team resources and client proofing pages
- Lead-generation pages connected to an external or embedded form
Where Canva is not the right tool
Choose a dedicated website or ecommerce platform instead if you need:
- A full online store
- A large blog or publishing operation
- Memberships, customer accounts, or advanced booking
- Databases or custom application logic
- Extensive technical SEO
- Deep control over code, redirects, servers, or integrations
- Complex forms and automated business workflows
Canva’s own hosting information says ecommerce is currently unsupported and describes its SEO features as basic. For those requirements, evaluate a conventional website platform or ecommerce provider rather than forcing Canva beyond its intended use.
Common problems and fixes
“Publish Website” is missing
Start from Canva’s Website Builder or a website template rather than an incompatible design type. If the control still does not appear, try the browser version, refresh your session, check team or workspace restrictions, and consult Canva’s Websites Help Centre.
Best Value
The custom-domain option is unavailable
Your plan may not support connecting an existing domain, the domain may already be connected elsewhere, or verification and DNS steps may be incomplete. Publish temporarily to a Canva URL, check the eligibility shown in the publishing dialog, and follow Canva’s verification instructions. Do not delete an existing website until the new domain works.
The desktop version looks good but mobile is broken
Return to Preview’s mobile view. Shorten headlines, enlarge buttons, increase spacing, reorder sections, replace overly wide graphics, and test each page independently after major changes.
Links do not work
Re-select the element and inspect its URL. Use the complete external address where required, then test in both Preview and on the published site. Check email, booking, social, form, and download links on a phone.
Recommended Free Tools
The site is not appearing in search
Check search-engine visibility, add a clear page title and description, use descriptive headings, and share the site from relevant channels. A new site may take time to be discovered, and Canva’s basic SEO settings cannot guarantee rankings.
An embedded form is awkward on mobile
Reduce the number of fields, test the form on a real phone, and make the primary contact method visible without excessive scrolling. If the embed remains difficult to use, link to an external form or booking page instead.
