Yes—Leonardo.Ai has a usable free tier for making game concepts and small batches of 2D assets. Free accounts currently receive 150 tokens per day, not 150 images: the cost of a generation or edit varies by model, settings, and feature. Leonardo’s guidance permits commercial use of free generations, but those images are public, so free is not the same as private or exclusive. Treat Leonardo as a starting point for art you will inspect, repair, and prepare—not as an automatic game-ready asset pipeline.
What you can make for a game
Leonardo can help explore visual directions or produce starting images for many parts of a game:
- Characters: player-character concepts, NPC portraits, enemy designs, boss concepts, and pose or turnaround references.
- Props: weapons, potions, keys, chests, books, furniture, and vehicles.
- UI art: inventory and ability icons, item-card illustrations, badges, decorative frames, and menu backgrounds.
- Environments: locations, battle arenas, map concepts, backgrounds, and loading-screen art.
- Materials: visual studies for stone, wood, metal, fabric, ground, and magical effects.
- Promotion and prototyping: key-art explorations, store-page imagery, social graphics, mood boards, or temporary visuals for a playable prototype.
There is a meaningful difference between an attractive image and a usable game asset. An image may have an unclear silhouette, inconsistent scale, stray background pixels, unsuitable detail at native size, or elements that need to be separated into layers. Plan for cleanup and in-engine testing.
What “free” means: 150 tokens a day, not a fixed image count
Leonardo’s token guidance says free users receive 150 daily tokens. Generating and editing images can use tokens, and the cost depends on the selected model, feature, number of outputs, size, and other settings. References and post-processing may also affect the cost. There is no reliable universal conversion from tokens to images. Check the cost shown by the Generate control before you commit; do not assume unused daily tokens will accumulate unless your account explicitly shows that.

To make the allowance go further, start with one clear asset and a specific prompt, compare the returned variations, and use a local edit for a small defect instead of regenerating a whole image. Higher-volume work, automation, or private generations may call for a paid plan; check the current pricing and features rather than relying on old plan prices.
Create your first image
- Create or sign in to a Leonardo.Ai account and open the web app.
- From the home page, use the prompt box or choose Image from the creation tools.
- Describe the subject, style, view, and intended game use.
- Review the displayed token cost and settings.
- Click Generate, compare the variations, and download the strongest result or continue editing it.
The home-page flow may choose a model automatically. For more control, open the dedicated Image Generation tool and select an available model or preset. Leonardo’s current image-generation guide describes the workflow; interface options and model availability can change.
A useful prompt structure is:
[subject], [visual style], [materials and colors], [camera angle], [lighting], [composition], [background requirement], [game-use requirement]
For example, for an isolated item concept:
fantasy RPG healing potion, hand-painted stylized game art, small glass bottle with glowing green liquid and brass stopper, three-quarter view, centered composition, strong readable silhouette, isolated object, transparent background, no text, no logo
For an environment concept:
2D fantasy platformer forest level, painterly stylized game art, large readable foreground shapes, layered midground and background, warm afternoon light, horizontal composition, no characters, no text, no interface elements
Write prompts for usable game assets
Specific visual instructions give you more control than a broad request such as “make a cool weapon.” Include details that matter in the game:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Subject: name the object or character precisely—such as “iron war hammer” or “hooded swamp alchemist.”
- View: specify front, side, three-quarter, top-down, or orthographic-style view where relevant.
- Silhouette and framing: request a clear outline, centered subject, and separated parts if the image will become an icon or sprite reference.
- Materials and palette: identify wood, iron, leather, crystal, or stone, and describe a limited palette or desired saturation.
- Lighting and finish: choose flat icon lighting, soft studio light, rim light, painterly edges, or another consistent treatment.
- Role and background: say “inventory icon,” “character concept,” or “environment background,” and specify transparent, plain, or full-scene background.
- Exclusions: ask for no text, logo, watermark, border, or extra objects when these would interfere.
For icons and props, ask for one isolated object with a strong silhouette. For a character, request a full-body pose and keep the background simple. For a scene, describe layered depth and composition. For UI, ask for decorative art with clear negative space, then add readable text in your graphics editor or engine rather than trusting the image model to render final labels. Leonardo’s prompt-writing guide and prompting tips offer further advice; negative prompts can reduce unwanted elements, but they do not guarantee removal.

Generate transparent PNGs for icons and props
For an isolated asset, open Image Generation, enable Transparency in the left sidebar, enter an object-focused prompt, choose an available model, and generate. Leonardo’s Transparency guide says the feature produces PNG output and does not add a token cost. Model and style compatibility can vary.
single stylized fantasy inventory icon of a blue crystal sword, front-facing, thick readable silhouette, polished metal and glowing blue crystal, centered, isolated object, transparent background, no shadow, no text, no border, no extra objects
When transparency is enabled, avoid describing a scene or environment. Check the downloaded PNG against both light and dark backgrounds: a transparent workflow does not guarantee a flawless alpha edge. Halos, soft shadows, stray particles, or fragments may remain. It tends to suit isolated subjects better than scenery; use an external cleanup or background-removal tool if needed.
Use references to steer style and composition
References can help you create a more coherent set than text prompts alone. Click the Image Guidance icon beside the prompt bar, choose an image-reference option, upload or select an image, explain what it should influence, adjust the available strength controls, and generate. The newer Omni-oriented workflow documents up to six uploaded reference images, but limits differ between models and interface modes. Check the controls in the workflow you are using; do not assume every mode accepts six images.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Useful reference roles include:
- Style: guide the overall rendering, palette, and visual language.
- Content or composition: guide broad shapes and layout.
- Character: help preserve a character’s identity in new images.
- Pose or sketch: suggest body position or arrangement.
- Several references: combine a character, weapon, palette, or pose when the active workflow supports it.
References improve direction; they do not guarantee exact continuity. A style image can also influence colors or facial features you did not intend. If the result becomes confused or too close to a reference in unwanted ways, simplify the prompt or reduce the reference influence. See Leonardo’s Image Guidance guide and image-upload instructions.

Build a consistent asset set
A single successful image is easier than a collection of icons or poses that look like they belong to the same game. Make a short style guide before producing a batch:
- Palette and color saturation
- Line, edge, or brush treatment
- Camera perspective and default view
- Lighting direction and contrast
- Character proportions and background treatment
- Target scale and level of detail
Generate one anchor image that captures the intended look. Reuse it as a suitable style, content, or character reference; keep prompt structure and settings consistent, changing one major variable at a time. Save prompts and settings that work. Put the resulting images side by side at their intended game scale, not just at full resolution. Use Canvas for local corrections when possible instead of regenerating an entire character and inviting more design drift.
For example, keep source files organized by role and use names that identify the asset and version:

Compare a set for matching camera angle, light direction, outline treatment, detail, saturation, and in-game scale. Watch for accidental text or background fragments, and check for character anatomy or design drift between poses. Reference images can improve consistency but cannot ensure a perfectly identical character every time.

Repair a nearly good image with Canvas
Canvas is useful when a generation is close but needs a local change or a larger composition. Open Canvas, upload an image or select a previous generation, position the image and generation frame, then use Draw Mask to change an area while retaining some underlying information, or Erase to remove unwanted content more fully. Enter a replacement prompt and generate within the frame. For inpainting or outpainting, make sure the generation frame covers the area you want to change and its lock is open. When extending a scene, leave enough of the original visible to guide continuity.
Example repair prompts:
- Remove an extra object: “clean continuation of the surrounding stone wall, same lighting and perspective, no object, no text”
- Improve a hand: “natural human hand gripping the sword handle, five fingers, same character design and lighting”
- Extend a background: “continue the same enchanted forest, matching perspective, color palette, lighting, and brushwork, no new characters”
If masking keeps recreating a defect, try erasing the area so the original details exert less influence. Leonardo’s Canvas guide notes that strong underlying image information can overpower a new prompt and that upscaled images can be harder to edit. Repair first, upscale later.
Prepare the image before importing it into an engine
Generation is only one stage of the asset pipeline. Whether you are using Unity, Godot, Unreal, or another engine, inspect and prepare the image for the way it will be used:
Recommended Free Tools
- Inspect the alpha channel and clean halos, stray pixels, or unwanted shadows.
- Crop excess empty space and normalize canvas dimensions across related assets.
- Resize to the project’s target resolution, then test at native in-game scale.
- Use your project’s preferred image format and color settings.
- Separate components into layers where the game requires independent movement or effects; assemble sprite sheets manually when needed.
- Create collision, navigation, and gameplay masks separately—do not assume the image contains usable geometry.
- Test assets on multiple backgrounds and under the game’s actual lighting and UI conditions.
- Keep the original high-resolution image alongside the prompt, references, and edited export.
A practical 2D workflow is generate → repair in Canvas → clean externally → crop and resize consistently → assemble sprites or UI → import → test in-game. Leonardo does not automatically deliver a clean sprite sheet, frame-perfect animation, rigged 3D model, production-ready texture atlas, collision geometry, complete UI system, or legally cleared likeness or trademark.

Can you use free Leonardo images commercially?
Leonardo’s commercial-use guidance says free-plan users may use generated images and videos commercially. That permission should not be confused with exclusivity or privacy. Free generations are public; Leonardo’s Terms of Service describe the rights associated with public content, and other users may be able to view, remix, or use it through Leonardo features. The terms page lists an update date of January 19, 2026; review the live terms and usage guidance before relying on them for a release.
If an unreleased game’s art must remain confidential or exclusive, the free public workflow may not fit. Leonardo says paid members can use Private Mode; its public/private image guidance explains visibility distinctions. Check your actual account settings and plan before generating sensitive work. Privacy settings and platform terms do not, by themselves, settle copyright ownership or guarantee that an image is legally clear for every use.
For commercial projects, avoid recognizable copyrighted characters, logos, branded products, or celebrity likenesses unless you have the necessary permission. Do not upload confidential client material or unreleased designs to a public workflow. Keep records of prompts, references, edits, and final assets. Copyright protection for AI-assisted work depends on jurisdiction and the human contribution involved; for high-value work, get jurisdiction-specific legal advice.
When the free workflow is not enough
The free tier is a sensible place to explore a style, make prototype art, or test a small number of isolated props and icons when public visibility is acceptable. Consider a paid plan or another production approach when you need private unreleased assets, larger batches, repeatable volume, or a workflow your team can rely on. Leonardo’s pricing page is the place to check current plan features and prices; paid features and model access can vary. Its API page advertises $5 in free API credit for initial testing, separate from the consumer token allowance. An API is most relevant when you want automation or integration and are prepared to manage implementation and variable usage costs.
Other tools may fit different needs—such as Adobe Firefly for an Adobe-centered editing workflow, Midjourney for concept and mood exploration, OpenAI image generation for conversational iteration, or the Stable Diffusion ecosystem for users comfortable with technical setup and custom models. Check each provider’s current access, privacy, and commercial terms; these are alternatives to investigate, not interchangeable promises of production readiness.
Quick Recap
Before you keep or ship an asset
- Does the prompt specify the asset type, view, silhouette, and intended use?
- Did you check the token cost before generating?
- Is the background and alpha channel correct for the asset?
- Are there stray pixels, text, logos, watermarks, or extra objects?
- Does the image read clearly at its actual in-game size?
- Have you used references and checked consistency across related assets?
- Have you recorded prompts and retained the source image?
- Are you comfortable with public visibility, and have you reviewed third-party rights?
