To create an image in Midjourney, open the Create page on midjourney.com, enter a description in the Imagine bar, and submit it. Discord is another option: use the /imagine command in a permitted channel or server with the Midjourney Bot. Midjourney’s current default is V8.2, which became the default on July 24, 2026, according to Midjourney’s Version page; check that page again before relying on version-specific features.
What is Midjourney?
Midjourney is a generative AI service that turns text prompts and image references into new images. Its website offers a Create feed for generating and retrieving work, and a web Editor for making more controlled changes to an existing image. References can guide a new generation, but they do not guarantee an exact copy.
Choose the web or Discord workflow

For a first image, the website is a direct starting point. The official Discord quick start says a subscription is required for its documented Discord image-creation workflow and directs users to accept the Terms of Service before creating. It also says no special hardware is required.
How to create your first Midjourney image
- Go to midjourney.com and log in.
- Open Create and find the Imagine bar.
- Enter a focused description, such as: editorial portrait of a ceramicist in a sunlit studio, warm natural light, muted earth tones, waist-up composition.
- Submit the prompt and review the images as they appear in the creation feed.
- Open a promising result to inspect its details, reuse or rerun its prompt, make variations, or open it in the Editor.
- Download the image you want to keep. Save or note its prompt, references, and settings if you may want to reproduce the direction later.
How to write a good Midjourney prompt
Midjourney’s Prompt Basics documentation defines a prompt as “the text or phrase you use to tell Midjourney what kind of image or video you want.” Start with the subject and add only the attributes that matter most: medium, setting, lighting, color, mood, and composition. Concise, concrete language is often more useful than a long list of unrelated instructions.

Prompt components to consider
- Subject: Say what should be visible.
- Medium: Specify a photograph, painting, drawing, collage, or another visual form when it matters.
- Environment: Describe the setting.
- Lighting and color: Mention the light quality and a color direction.
- Mood: Describe the intended feel.
- Composition: Add a viewpoint, framing, or layout when important.
Present examples as starting points, not guaranteed recipes. Change one important input at a time while refining so you can compare the result with the composition or mood you intended.
Using parameters
Parameters modify generation settings. Put them after the prompt text, separated by a space, and avoid punctuation in parameter syntax. Check Midjourney’s current Parameter List for availability and compatibility with the model version you are using.

For example, a prompt might end with --ar 16:9 when a wide composition is wanted. Do not assume every parameter or range works across every model version.
Iterate from a promising result
- Choose the result closest to the intended subject and composition.
- Decide whether to change the prompt, use a variation, reuse the prompt, or edit the image.
- Change one important input and compare the next result.
- Keep the strongest result and download it when ready.
The Create page retains finished work and exposes prompt and job details. The Organize page can help sort, filter, and group creations. Check your account and privacy controls rather than assuming creations are private.
Using image references and the Editor
Image Prompts
An Image Prompt can influence content, composition, and color, and can be combined with text. Describe the desired final image rather than merely asking for a change to the reference. Midjourney describes references as inspiration for new images, not exact copies. Image weight can affect the reference’s influence, but its range and compatibility depend on the model version. The web Editor
Use the Editor when you want to modify an existing image with more control than a new generation offers. Midjourney’s Editor instructions describe erasing and regenerating selected areas, restoring erased areas, resizing the canvas, and using tools such as Remix, Pan, and Zoom Out. The Editor accepts Midjourney images and external images. Controls and compatibility can change, so do not assume an edit will be pixel-perfect.
What changed in V8.2?
According to Midjourney’s Version page, V8.2 became the default on July 24, 2026. Midjourney describes it as focused on aesthetics, image quality, and Personalization, and says the Edit Model replaces Omni Reference, Character Reference, and Retexture. These version details and feature compatibility are volatile; check the Midjourney documentation before following older tutorials or using a version-specific control.
Privacy and uploaded images
Check Midjourney’s current account and privacy settings before creating or sharing work. The web Create and Organize pages provide creation management and public/private controls, but do not assume a creation is private by default. Upload only images you have the right to use, and review the current Terms of Service before using sensitive material.
