You can’t solder wood, but you can melt solid solder into a carved recess to make a decorative inlay. The basic process is to carve a design, fill it with verified lead-free solder, sand the cooled metal flush, and use a soldering iron to patch small gaps. A CNC router is optional; a hand router or suitable carving tool can also make the recess.
What this technique does
This is a metal inlay, not a soldered wood joint: melted solder fills a shallow design carved into a wood blank. In Make’s 2016 example, the carved Superman emblem was about 3 mm deep; that is an example, not a universal groove depth. Make’s project guide and Warren Downes’s One Wood demonstration show the basic approach.
Tools and materials
- A stable wood blank and a design to transfer or draw.
- A CNC router, hand router, drill press, or suitable rotary or hand-carving tool for cutting the recess. CNC is not required.
- Solid solder explicitly labeled lead-free.
- A heat source for melting solder into the recess. The One Wood demonstration uses a blowtorch; Make describes a torch for filling and a soldering iron for gap repairs.
- A belt or random-orbit sander to level the cooled inlay, plus a soldering iron for small repairs.
- Eye protection for power-tool work; dust extraction and appropriate respiratory protection when sanding.
How to make the inlay
- Choose and mark a design. Draw or transfer a simple shape onto a stable wood blank. The demonstrations do not specify a preferred wood species.
- Carve the recess. Cut the design into the wood with a CNC router or an appropriate hand tool. Make’s Superman example was about 3 mm deep; choose a groove that suits your design rather than treating that example as a required measurement.
- Check the solder label. Use only solder explicitly identified as lead-free. Make warns that many solders contain lead and that sanding lead-bearing material is unsafe. Do not proceed with solder of uncertain composition.
- Fill the recess. Melt solid solder into the carved shape. In the One Wood demonstration, solder was added in clumps so the drips could merge. Work carefully with the heat source and keep it directed at the recess.
- Let it cool, then level it. Once the metal has cooled, sand the surface flush with the surrounding wood. The examples use a belt sander and identify a random-orbit sander as another option.
- Patch gaps. Use a soldering iron to add solder to visible holes or gaps, allow the repairs to cool, and sand again until level.
- Finish the wood if desired. Make describes torch-burning the surrounding wood and also mentions stain or urethane as appearance options. These are optional finishes, not requirements of the inlay method.
Choosing tools and heat sources
| Task | Options described | What the sources establish |
|---|---|---|
| Carving | CNC router; hand router; drill press; rotary or hand-carving tools | Make used a CNC router and names a drill press and hand router as alternatives; One Wood also mentions hand tools or a Dremel-style tool. No comparative performance test is reported. |
| Filling the recess | Torch; high-wattage soldering iron or small butane torch as possible alternatives | The One Wood demonstration uses a blowtorch, and Make describes a torch for filling. Instructables lists a high-wattage iron or small butane torch as possible heat sources, but the sources do not establish equivalent results: Instructables’ solder-inlay guide. |
| Levelling | Belt sander or random-orbit sander | The demonstration used a belt sander; Make also identifies a random-orbit sander. No head-to-head comparison is provided. |
| Small gap repairs | Soldering iron | Make and One Wood describe using an iron to fill remaining holes or gaps. |
Safety and limits
- Lead is the critical material hazard. Make’s 2016 warning says many types of solder are lead-based and specifically cautions against sanding anything that contains lead. Verify the label before melting or sanding; never sand a lead-bearing inlay. Make’s safety note is explicit on this point.
- Control dust and tool hazards. Wear eye protection when using power tools. Instructables recommends a mask and dust extraction for sanding; use suitable respiratory and hearing protection where the tools and conditions call for it.
- Use heat cautiously. A torch can burn the surrounding wood, and the Make example intentionally torch-burns the surface as a finish. Keep the heat controlled and use appropriate precautions for hot tools and materials.
- Do not infer untested specifications. These are craft demonstrations, not controlled tests or a comprehensive safety standard. They do not establish a preferred solder alloy, wood species, torch setting, finish durability, food-contact suitability, or universal groove geometry.
Common questions
Can a beginner do this without a CNC machine?
Yes. The cited how-to sources identify a hand router, drill press, and rotary or hand-carving tools as alternatives to CNC. Choose a tool you can control safely to cut the design.

Does the solder need to be lead-free?
Yes. Use solder labeled lead-free, because sanding a lead-bearing inlay is unsafe. If its composition is uncertain, do not use it for this project.
Is the inlay suitable for food-contact surfaces?
The cited project guides do not establish food-contact suitability. Do not assume a solder-and-wood inlay is appropriate for a food-contact surface.
