ChatGPT can create the chibi artwork for a personalized WhatsApp sticker pack, but it does not necessarily finish the entire WhatsApp installation process. The reliable workflow has three separate stages: generate the artwork, prepare each file to WhatsApp’s specifications, and import the finished stickers through a compatible sticker-maker workflow.
This guide covers all three stages, including prompts for consistent characters, transparent backgrounds, file-size limits, and fixes for common problems.
What “chibi-style” means
Chibi is a broad visual direction rather than a single technical preset. It usually combines an oversized head, a small body, rounded proportions, simplified facial features, expressive eyes, bright or soft colors, and a bold, readable silhouette.

For stickers, the most useful chibi traits are a strong outline, a clear pose, minimal background detail, and an expression that remains recognizable at small size. Use descriptive language such as cute chibi cartoon, kawaii-inspired proportions, or rounded anime-style avatar. Do not ask ChatGPT to copy a particular artist, studio, franchise, or brand style.
What you need before starting
- A ChatGPT account with access to ChatGPT Images. OpenAI currently lists ChatGPT Images 2.0 on Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu tiers, although generation limits vary by plan. See the current ChatGPT Images documentation.
- The ChatGPT app or website.
- A clear reference photo, or a written character concept.
- Permission to use another person’s face or likeness.
- A list of reactions your pack should cover.
- An editor or sticker-maker app that can verify transparency, resize files, and import them into WhatsApp.
For a likeness, choose one well-lit front-facing or three-quarter portrait with the face and upper body visible. Avoid sunglasses, hands covering the face, harsh shadows, and heavy obstructions. One reference photo usually gives ChatGPT fewer conflicting cues. Several images can help with clothing, hairstyle, or pose, but explain what each image is meant to contribute. OpenAI recommends using a small set of reference images and describing their roles in its image-generation guidance.
WhatsApp sticker requirements at a glance
Prepare every static sticker individually. WhatsApp’s published sticker-development guidance specifies the following:

These requirements come from WhatsApp’s official sticker repository. Test your finished artwork over white, black, colored, and patterned backgrounds. A sticker that looks fine on a white canvas may disappear in a dark or busy chat.

A useful pack represents everyday conversation rather than a collection of unrelated poses. A practical starter set could include:

Keep captions to one or two words whenever possible. Short text is easier to read on a phone and less likely to be misspelled by an image model.
Upload your reference photo to ChatGPT
Create an image in a ChatGPT conversation or open the Images area; labels can vary by operating system, app release, account, and rollout. Use the upload control to attach your photo, then explain which features must remain consistent.
For example:
Use the uploaded photo as a likeness reference. Preserve the person’s hairstyle, glasses, skin tone, and cheerful expression, but simplify the design into a generic chibi cartoon avatar. Do not copy any specific artist, franchise, or brand style.Only use a person’s likeness with their permission. This is especially important for friends, coworkers, children, and public figures.
Generate one sticker at a time
The most controllable method is to make one sticker per generation. Individual files are easier to correct, crop, save, resize, and import. A sticker sheet can be useful for brainstorming, but it may contain merged characters, inconsistent spacing, misspelled captions, or panels that are difficult to crop cleanly.
Use this base prompt:
Create a single WhatsApp sticker featuring the person in the uploaded photo as a cute chibi cartoon avatar.
Design:

Use accurate, highly legible text and include no other words.Replace the bracketed text with one clear action, such as laughing with eyes closed and one hand raised or worried, with hands together and a slightly bowed posture.

Keep the character consistent
After approving the first sticker, use it as a visual reference for later images where possible. Repeat the fixed character details in every prompt and change only the reaction, pose, and caption.
Create another sticker using the same chibi character design as the previous image.
Keep exactly consistent:
- hairstyle
- glasses
- skin tone
- head-to-body proportions
- outline thickness
- color palette
- clothing design
- illustration finish
Change only:
- expression: [expression]
- pose: [pose]
- caption: “[SHORT PHRASE]”
Single character, centered, transparent background, no additional text, no logo, no watermark.Consistency is not guaranteed. If the face or clothing drifts, regenerate that individual sticker or make a small targeted edit instead of changing the whole prompt. OpenAI recommends clear, direct prompts and small revisions rather than changing many variables at once.

Sticker without text
Turn the uploaded person into a single cute chibi WhatsApp sticker. Oversized head, tiny body, expressive eyes, rounded features, bold clean white outline, polished cartoon finish, full body visible, centered, transparent background, no scenery, no caption, no logo, no watermark.

Adding text in ChatGPT is faster and can integrate the caption with the pose, but image models can misspell words, change punctuation, use inconsistent fonts, or make lettering too small. Quote the exact phrase and keep it short if you use this method.
For dependable spelling and a consistent typeface, generate the character without text and add captions afterward in an image editor. This is usually the better option for a polished pack. OpenAI’s guidance also recommends using a design tool for dense or text-heavy layouts.
Targeted corrections
ChatGPT Images supports editing and selection-based edits, but a selected edit can sometimes affect areas beyond the selection. Try one change at a time:

Keep the character, clothing, colors, pose, and composition unchanged. Correct only the spelling of the caption to: “THANK YOU.”Keep everything else exactly the same. Remove the background and preserve the full transparent area around the character.Keep the character design unchanged. Use ChatGPT’s Save control to download each image. Generated images are also stored in the Images area until the associated conversation is deleted, according to the ChatGPT Images help page.

chibi-pack-04-sorry.pngThen place each character on a 512 × 512 transparent canvas. Check that:
- The entire character is visible and not cut off.
- The character is large enough to read in a chat.
- The background is genuinely transparent.
- The caption is readable at phone size.
- The file is PNG or transparent WebP.
- The static file is no larger than 100 KB.
- The outline remains visible over light and dark backgrounds.
Do not treat a checkerboard preview as proof of transparency. Open the downloaded file in an editor or viewer that displays the alpha channel. Never save a transparent sticker as JPEG.
PNG is simple for a consumer workflow, but WebP may produce a smaller file. If a PNG exceeds 100 KB, export as transparent WebP or optimize the PNG. Remove unnecessary metadata and hidden layers, simplify shadows and textures, and reduce WebP quality gradually until the file meets the limit without obvious visual damage.

- Install or open a compatible sticker-maker app.
- Create a new sticker pack.
- Add the prepared sticker files.
- Enter a pack name and publisher name if requested.
- Use the app’s option to add the pack to WhatsApp.
- Open a WhatsApp conversation, tap the sticker icon, and locate the new pack.
Exact labels and import behavior vary by iPhone model, Android device, region, WhatsApp release, permissions, and the third-party app. Samsung Gallery features and particular apps are examples of possible workflows, not universal WhatsApp controls.
WhatsApp’s official sticker repository documents the technical rules and acknowledges sticker-maker apps, but its sample iOS implementation is intended for developers. It is not a simple consumer installation path.
Troubleshooting

Static versus animated stickers
Static stickers are the sensible default for a first pack. They are easier to generate, crop, compress, and import. Animated stickers require WebP, a maximum file size of 500 KB, frame durations of at least 8 milliseconds, and a maximum total duration of 10 seconds. Do not mix static and animated stickers in the same pack. See WhatsApp’s technical documentation before attempting an animated pack.
Privacy, likeness, and copyright
Use your own photos or obtain permission before turning someone else’s likeness into a sticker. Avoid copyrighted characters, logos, celebrity likenesses, and recognizable franchise designs unless you have the appropriate rights.

Rights can depend on the source photo, likeness, platform terms, and any third-party elements used during editing. Canva, for example, provides a WhatsApp sticker maker but places restrictions on using library content in stickers and on reselling or redistributing designs containing that content. Treat its licensing terms as separate from the rights to your own photos and original artwork.
Optional finishing tools
ChatGPT is strongest here as the artwork-generation and editing tool. A separate editor such as Canva can help with manual background cleanup, consistent captions, layout, and export. Its Background Remover is presented as a Pro feature, so a small personal pack may not require it.
For most readers, a free ChatGPT tier plus a free transparency-aware editor or sticker-maker app is enough for a small personal pack. Paid ChatGPT plans may provide more image-generation access, but plan features and limits change; check the current pricing page for your country and billing platform.
