How to Create Consistent Storybook Characters with ChatGPT and DALL·E 3

ChatGPT can improve storybook character continuity, but it cannot guarantee identical characters. Use a character bible, canonical reference image, fixed-versus-variable prompts, targeted revisions, and separate book layout.

ChatGPT can help you develop a recognizable storybook character across a cover, character sheet, and multiple scenes—but no prompt can guarantee a pixel-identical result every time. The most reliable workflow is to create a detailed character bible, generate one canonical reference image, upload that reference for each scene, and make small revisions instead of regenerating everything from scratch.

One terminology update matters: older tutorials call this the “DALL·E 3 in ChatGPT” workflow. As of August 2026, ChatGPT’s current in-product image generator is identified as ChatGPT Images 2.0. DALL·E 3 remains documented for the API, but OpenAI marks that API model as deprecated. The process below is designed for ChatGPT’s current image workflow and can be adapted if your account shows different model names or controls.

Can ChatGPT keep a storybook character consistent?

It can improve character continuity, but it cannot guarantee that the same character will look exactly identical in every generated image.

For a children’s book, useful consistency usually means that readers recognize the same character from page to page. That includes:

#1 Best Overall
[LEZHIN Comics] Point Character Drawing [Paperback]
  • A slightly easier reinterpretation of the deformed human body guide
  • Human body drawing that is easily expressed in pictures
  • Identity: face, eyes, skin, fur, hair, and distinctive markings.
  • Silhouette: height, body shape, head-to-body ratio, ears, tail, and outline.
  • Wardrobe: recurring shirts, coats, boots, glasses, hats, or backpacks.
  • Palette: stable colors, materials, and lighting.
  • Age and proportions: the character should not suddenly become older, younger, taller, or more realistic.
  • Art direction: a consistent medium, line quality, texture, and level of detail.
  • Scene continuity: props, settings, positions, and actions should not contradict the story.

Expressions, poses, camera angles, and emotions can change. In fact, they should change. The goal is not a duplicate image; it is a coherent visual identity.

OpenAI’s current image guidance recommends using a small number of reference images, repeating important fixed details, and clearly separating what must change from what must remain unchanged. That reduces drift, but it does not eliminate it. See OpenAI’s image-generation guidance.

First, understand the DALL·E 3 naming issue

Many older articles describe ChatGPT’s image feature as DALL·E 3 because that was the model associated with ChatGPT image generation at the time. OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Images 2.0 on April 21, 2026, and its release notes describe it as available across ChatGPT plans, subject to account, region, rollout, and usage limitations. Paid plans may also offer “images with thinking.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DALL·E 3 is still listed in OpenAI’s developer documentation, including its historical image sizes and pricing, but the model is marked deprecated. It is therefore not a strong choice for a new, long-term API production pipeline. If you use the API, check OpenAI’s current image-model documentation before building around any model name or price.

This article keeps “DALL·E 3” in the title because it is the phrase many readers search for, but the practical instructions apply to the current ChatGPT image-generation experience.

Prepare the book before generating pictures

Image models improvise when the story, character, action, or composition is vague. A little planning prevents a large amount of correction later.

Create a story brief

Write down:

  • Target age and reading level.
  • Page count and whether pages are single illustrations or spreads.
  • Tone and emotional arc.
  • Setting and time period.
  • Main conflict and resolution.
  • Narrator and point of view.
  • Recurring objects such as a wagon, lantern, toy, or red umbrella.

Build a character bible

Use a structured specification rather than relying on a character name alone:

Make a scene list

For each page or spread, record:

Page/spread number:
Narrative text:
Location:
Time of day:
Characters present:
Character action:
Emotion:
Camera distance and angle:
Important props:
Continuity requirements:
Text placement:

This list turns the book into a controlled sequence instead of a collection of unrelated images.

Ask ChatGPT to create a visual bible

You can have ChatGPT turn your story idea into a starting specification before generating any artwork:

I am creating a children’s storybook. Help me build a visual bible before generating images.

Story premise:
[describe the story]

Create:
1. A main-character specification with fixed visual traits.
2. A secondary-character specification.
3. A setting and color-palette guide.
4. A list of recurring props.
5. Rules for what must remain consistent.
6. A page-by-page scene list.

Do not generate images yet. Ask questions if any visual detail is ambiguous.

Resolve ambiguities before moving on. Decide whether the character has a left- or right-sided marking, whether a coat has two buttons or three, and whether the setting is modern, historical, or fantastical.

Generate a canonical character reference sheet

Your first image should be a reference, not a dramatic story scene. Ask for a plain background and several views:

Create a character reference sheet for [character name].

Show the same character in:
- front view
- side view
- three-quarter view
- full-body standing pose
- three simple facial expressions

Use one consistent children’s storybook illustration style. Keep the character’s proportions,
colors, clothing, markings, and accessories identical in every view. Use a plain,
uncluttered background. Do not add captions, labels, logos, or extra characters.

A reference sheet may contain inconsistencies within its own panels. Do not assume every view is equally authoritative. Choose the strongest version, or create a corrected reference image, then designate the canonical details explicitly.

Save the original image, a useful full-body crop, a face crop, the prompt, the date, and notes about which details are authoritative. A reference sheet is useful only if you can reliably identify the version you intend to preserve.

Upload and reuse the reference

In ChatGPT, image uploads are generally available through the + control and Add photos & files, or by dragging and pasting an image into the conversation. OpenAI lists PNG, JPEG/JPG, and non-animated GIF among supported formats and lists a 20 MB per-image limit in its image-input FAQ. Interface labels, limits, and availability can change, so verify them in your account.

Use one canonical character reference plus, at most, a small number of supporting references. For example:

  • Image 1: canonical character identity reference.
  • Image 2: medium, palette, and texture reference.
  • Image 3: setting or recurring prop reference.

Explain each image’s role in the prompt. Do not expect filenames or metadata to communicate your instructions. A small, clearly labeled reference set is easier for the model to interpret than a large collection of contradictory images.

If the reference contains conflicting traits, state the correct ones:

Use the uploaded image as the identity reference. The canonical details are:
- green eyes
- one cream-colored patch over the left eyebrow
- yellow raincoat with two red buttons
- red boots
- short rounded tail

Ignore any conflicting details in the reference image.

Generate one storybook scene at a time

Separate fixed identity from variable scene content. This makes each prompt easier to inspect and each revision easier to control.

Use the uploaded character reference as the identity source.

Create a full-page children’s storybook illustration of [character name]
[action] in [setting].

Keep these details fixed:
- same face and eye color
- same body proportions
- same hair or fur pattern
- same yellow raincoat with two red buttons
- same red boots
- same illustration medium and line quality

Change only:
- pose: [pose]
- expression: [expression]
- location: [location]
- time of day: [time]
- supporting props: [props]

Composition:
- [wide shot / medium shot / close-up]
- place the character [position]
- leave clear negative space at [top/bottom/left/right] for story text
- no lettering, captions, watermark, logo, or border

For example:

Use the uploaded image as the canonical reference for Milo.

Milo is a small brown rabbit with a white crescent-shaped mark above his right eye,
long ears with pink inner ears, a blue knitted vest, and green canvas shoes.

Show Milo carefully carrying a red apple through a sunny community garden.
He looks nervous but determined. Use a medium-wide, eye-level composition.
Place Milo slightly right of center and leave open space on the left for story text.

Match the uploaded character’s proportions, face, markings, clothing, colors,
and children’s storybook gouache style. Keep the garden simple and readable.
No text, labels, logos, watermark, extra limbs, duplicate character, or second rabbit.

Generate the composition for the book’s intended orientation—square, portrait, landscape, single page, or full-bleed spread. Do not depend on cropping later to create the correct layout.

Revise instead of restarting

Large changes create more opportunities for identity drift. Use targeted revision prompts:

Keep the character, composition, lighting, clothing, and background unchanged.
Change only the facial expression to surprised.
Keep everything else exactly the same. Move the red wagon from the right side
of the image to the left side.
Preserve the character’s identity and outfit. Make the camera wider so the character
occupies about one-third of the frame, leaving empty space at the top for story text.

Change one problem at a time. If you alter the face, camera, action, lighting, setting, and art style simultaneously, you will not know which instruction caused the new failure.

Reuse one style block

A separate style block helps prevent pages from drifting between watercolor, vector art, and 3D rendering:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Style:
soft gouache children’s-book illustration, visible brush texture,
rounded organic shapes, gentle warm lighting, muted but cheerful colors,
simple readable silhouettes, subtle paper grain, expressive faces,
consistent medium-weight outlines, no photorealism, no 3D rendering

Keep the following stable:

  • Medium and surface texture.
  • Line weight and shape language.
  • Palette and lighting direction.
  • Background complexity.
  • Character rendering and level of detail.
  • Camera language and framing.

Describe visual properties rather than casually alternating between incompatible styles. Also avoid asking for the style of a living artist. OpenAI says DALL·E 3 declines requests to imitate living artists; medium, texture, palette, lighting, and line quality are more useful descriptions anyway.

Keep a continuity checklist for every page

Before accepting an illustration, compare it with the canonical reference and neighboring pages:

  • Are the eyes the same color?
  • Are facial or fur markings on the correct side?
  • Are clothing items complete and correctly colored?
  • Are shoes, glasses, hats, and jewelry present?
  • Is the character’s age, height, and body shape stable?
  • Are hands, paws, ears, tails, and object interactions plausible?
  • Are recurring props present and positioned correctly?
  • Does the illustration medium match the rest of the book?
  • Is there enough blank space for the text?
  • Is there accidental lettering or gibberish in the image?

Reject weak images early. Trying to rescue a severely altered face through many edits can take longer than generating a new scene from the canonical reference.

Common consistency failures and fixes

Problem Likely cause Best fix
Different face No canonical close-up, or too much regeneration Re-upload the close-up, repeat the fixed facial traits, and simplify the pose or framing.
Clothing changes Wardrobe was described vaguely Use a short checklist of clothing items, colors, buttons, shoes, and accessories.
Style changes Conflicting medium or lighting instructions Reuse the same style block and, where useful, a representative style reference.
Duplicate characters Crowded scene or ambiguous roles Use separate references, label roles, specify positions, and simplify the composition.
Gibberish text Final typography was generated inside the artwork Remove text from the illustration and add it during layout.
No room for text Composition was not specified Request a camera distance, subject position, and text-safe negative space before generation.
Props move or vanish Props were not treated as continuity elements Add recurring props to both the scene list and the fixed-details section of the prompt.
Awkward hands or poses Too many complex interactions in one image Simplify the action, use a clearer silhouette, or choose a medium shot.

Generate illustrations first; add book text later

Do not rely on the image generator for the final title, story text, page numbers, copyright notice, or other dense typography. Even when a short phrase appears correctly, every letter must be proofread.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A cleaner book workflow is:

  1. Generate the illustration without story text.
  2. Reserve a text-safe area in the composition.
  3. Place the text in a dedicated layout or design application.
  4. Proofread the wording and typography separately.
  5. Check trim, bleed, margins, resolution, and color requirements with the intended printer or publishing platform.

OpenAI’s guidance says text generation works better when wording is short, exact, and accompanied by placement and typography instructions, but it also recommends polishing dense layouts in a design tool. Illustration generation, typesetting, and print production are related tasks—not the same task.

Is ChatGPT suitable for a publishable children’s book?

ChatGPT is a practical choice for prototyping a book, developing visual direction, creating a small number of illustrations, and working conversationally on story planning and revisions. It is especially approachable for authors without illustration software experience.

It is less suitable as the only production system when:

  • The character must remain nearly identical across dozens of pages.
  • The project has strict brand, licensing, or continuity requirements.
  • You need batch generation with repeatable technical parameters.
  • Print dimensions and color control are critical.
  • The book requires extensive anatomy correction or professional art direction.
  • The layout contains complex typography, diagrams, or exact recurring elements.

A human illustrator, dedicated design application, or more controlled illustration pipeline may be worthwhile for those projects. Paying for a ChatGPT plan does not solve the underlying identity problem; plans can affect access and usage limits, but they do not guarantee exact character locking or unlimited image generation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Commercial, rights, and provenance considerations

OpenAI has stated that users may reprint, sell, or merchandise images they create with DALL·E 3. That statement is not a universal guarantee of copyright protection, trademark clearance, model-release compliance, or freedom from third-party rights. Before publication, review the current OpenAI terms, the rules of your publishing platform, and the law applicable to your project.

Take particular care with:

  • Real people’s names or likenesses.
  • Existing fictional characters.
  • Logos, trademarks, and recognizable branded products.
  • Uploaded artwork that you do not own or have permission to use.
  • Requests to imitate living artists.
  • Local rules concerning copyright and human authorship.

OpenAI documents provenance signals such as C2PA metadata and SynthID for supported images. Its verification guidance also warns that the absence of a detectable signal does not prove that an image was not generated by OpenAI. Preserve your prompts, source files, edits, and layout work as part of your project records.

A practical decision framework

Start with ChatGPT Free if you are testing the workflow, developing a character, or making only a few concepts. OpenAI’s pricing page describes image generation on the Free plan as limited.

Consider ChatGPT Plus if you need repeated reference uploads, revisions, and integrated writing support. OpenAI lists Plus at $20 per month, billed monthly, but usage limits still apply and can change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not start a new project around the DALL·E 3 API without considering its deprecated status and the newer image API direction.

Consider a broader creative suite such as Adobe Firefly if you already work in Adobe tools or need a more production-oriented design environment. It is not automatically better for character continuity, and its plans, credits, and model availability can change.
