Use Midjourney Moodboards to establish a visual language first, then generate a coordinated set of images inside that language. The Moodboard guides the aesthetic; your text prompt defines the subject and scene; a separate layout tool turns the selected results into the finished presentation board.
What a Midjourney Moodboard actually does
A Midjourney Moodboard is a style-personalization tool: you collect images that express a project’s visual language, then use that board to guide a new set of generated images. It is not usually the finished presentation board.
That distinction matters. Midjourney helps you develop the ingredients—color, lighting, materials, atmosphere, composition, and visual character. You will normally assemble those ingredients afterward in a layout or collaboration tool, adding labels, color swatches, notes, typography, and a clear hierarchy.
Moodboards are intended to communicate a broader aesthetic range than Style References. A narrow reference set tends to produce more focused results; a varied set tends to produce more diverse results. Use the first approach when you need brand or campaign consistency, and the second when you are exploring possibilities.

Moodboard, Style Reference, image prompt, or text prompt?
These controls overlap, but they do different jobs:
| Tool | Best used for | What it contributes |
|---|---|---|
| Moodboard | Defining a project-wide visual direction | A broad aesthetic language drawn from a collection of images |
| Style Reference | Controlling a specific visual treatment | Details such as color relationships, medium, texture, or lighting |
| Image Prompt | Influencing a particular generation | Possible effects on content, composition, style, and color |
| Text prompt | Describing what should be generated | The subject, scene, medium, environment, mood, and composition |
A Moodboard should not replace the written prompt. It supplies the visual direction; your prompt should still say what you want to see. Likewise, a reference image is inspiration and guidance, not a guarantee of pixel-level duplication.
There is also an important compatibility limitation: Midjourney Moodboards cannot be combined with the Style Reference Version parameter --sv or Style Weight parameter --sw. If you need the narrower control of a Style Reference, use that workflow deliberately rather than mixing incompatible controls.

1. Write the brief before collecting images
Start with a short creative brief. This prevents the Moodboard from becoming a random image dump and gives you a standard against which to judge the generated set.
- Project or subject: What are you designing or exploring?
- Audience: Who needs to understand or respond to the work?
- Emotional tone: Calm, raw, playful, ceremonial, dramatic, clinical, intimate, or something else?
- Color direction: Include dominant colors, accents, contrast, and saturation.
- Materials and textures: For example, limestone, glazed ceramic, linen, oxidized metal, handmade paper, or brushed wood.
- Lighting: Diffuse daylight, hard flash, candlelight, overcast light, or high-contrast studio lighting.
- Composition: Close-ups, wide spaces, centered objects, asymmetry, generous negative space, or layered details.
- Output format: Decide whether the work is for a landscape presentation, a vertical screen, social content, or a portrait layout.
- Non-negotiables: Record what must remain recognizable across the image set.
Midjourney’s prompting guidance generally favors clear descriptions of the subject, medium, environment, lighting, color, mood, and composition. A concise brief makes it easier to turn those decisions into prompts.
2. Collect the right reference images
Choose references for the qualities you want to communicate, not only for objects you want to reproduce. Depending on the project, collect examples of:
- Color relationships and degrees of contrast
- Lighting direction and shadow softness
- Surface texture and material behavior
- Architecture, clothing, or spatial forms
- Camera distance and viewpoint
- Typography or graphic structure, when relevant
- Composition, cropping, and use of negative space
For a focused board, select images that already share a recognizable visual language. For an exploratory board, include deliberate contrasts—but define the purpose as finding a synthesis, not reproducing one reference.
Separate materially different directions into separate boards. For example, create warm editorial interiors, high-contrast cyberpunk, and soft botanical packaging as independent directions rather than continually adding unrelated images to one board.

Be realistic about what references can do. They guide Midjourney toward a new creation; they do not ensure an exact copy of an object, person, layout, or artwork.
3. Create the Moodboard on Midjourney’s website
- Open the Moodboards page from the main navigation on midjourney.com.
- Select New Moodboard.
- Give the board a project-specific name, such as Coastal wellness—warm mineral direction.
- Add images by uploading them from your device, entering image URLs, or selecting images from your Midjourney gallery.
- Review the collection before using it. Remove references that introduce an accidental color, medium, era, or subject direction.
Moodboards are compatible with Midjourney versions 6, 7, and 8.1 according to the supplied product documentation. Interface labels and version behavior can change, so check Midjourney’s current documentation if the navigation or controls look different.
4. Apply the Moodboard to a prompt
On the website, the Personalization button beside the Imagine bar turns personalization on or off and allows you to choose default Moodboards. You can either apply a selected board automatically or add the personalization parameter to an individual prompt.
To target a particular Moodboard, place its ID after --p. A typical prompt looks like this:
editorial still life of handmade ceramic vessels on a limestone table, soft north-window light, restrained neutral palette, tactile material detail --ar 16:9 --p mID
After submission, Midjourney converts the Moodboard ID into its code. Replace mID with the ID of your own board; it is only a placeholder here.
Describe the scene rather than writing instructions such as “copy the moodboard.” The Moodboard carries the broader visual direction, while the text identifies the content and arrangement you want generated.
5. Use an aspect ratio that matches the final board
Midjourney defaults to a square 1:1 image. Use --ar or --aspect to set proportions before generating the main batch:
| Parameter | Useful for |
|---|---|
--ar 16:9 |
Landscape presentation boards and wide environmental images |
--ar 9:16 |
Vertical, mobile-oriented presentations |
--ar 4:5 |
Portrait social content and product directions |
--ar 2:3 |
Portrait-oriented layouts |
--ar 1:1 |
Square studies, tiles, and flexible supporting images |
Aspect ratio controls proportions, not final pixel dimensions. Choosing it early reduces cropping later and makes comparisons fair: a hero image generated as a wide composition will generally be more useful on a wide board than a square image stretched or heavily cropped afterward.

6. Generate a visual system, not one impressive image
Start with several related prompts instead of trying to create the entire project from one prompt. Generate roles within the set:
- Hero image or central concept
- Supporting environment
- Material or texture close-up
- Color or lighting study
- Object or detail study
- Human or character reference, if the project requires one
Judge the images together. Ask:
- Do the images share a convincing color relationship?
- Does the lighting feel as though it belongs to the same project?
- Are the materials and textures compatible?
- Do the crops and camera distances create useful variety without looking unrelated?
- Is the board focused enough for its intended audience?
If the set is inconsistent, narrow the Moodboard, simplify the text prompts, or switch to a more specific Style Reference for the visual treatment. If every result feels repetitive, broaden the reference set or vary the subject and composition while keeping the visual language stable.
Prompt templates
These examples keep the subject and scene in the text while allowing the Moodboard to provide the wider aesthetic direction.

Change one meaningful variable at a time when refining a direction. If you change the subject, lighting, palette, lens distance, and composition simultaneously, it becomes difficult to tell which decision improved or weakened the set.
7. Refine promising images
Once an image establishes a useful direction, separate or upscale it and develop related images from that starting point. Midjourney’s modification tools can help you adapt the image to the board:
- Pan: Expand the canvas in a chosen direction, useful for creating a wider environmental composition or leaving room for layout.
- Zoom Out: Reveal more surrounding context when a close crop is too restrictive.
- Vary: Explore alternatives while retaining the general direction.
- Remix: Modify the prompt while iterating on a selected image, where available in the chosen workflow.
- Vary Region: Rework a selected area rather than regenerating the entire image.
- Editor: Combine operations such as panning, Zoom Out, Remix, and Vary Region in a broader editing workflow.
These tools can help create related details or adapt a composition to the required aspect ratio, but generated additions may introduce variation. Check hands, lettering, product details, repeated patterns, edges, and other areas where small errors could undermine a professional board.
8. Organize the results before assembling the board
Use Midjourney’s Organize page to filter, download, and move images into folders. You can also generate directly inside an open folder. Bulk actions are useful for moving selected images or downloading a group.

- Text prompt
- Midjourney version
- Moodboard ID or resulting code
- Aspect ratio
- Important parameters or reference controls
- Reason the image was selected
This record is particularly valuable when a client asks for a variation weeks later or when several people are reviewing the same direction.
9. Assemble the finished digital moodboard
Midjourney supplies the visual ingredients; a separate layout or collaboration tool is usually better for the final presentation. Arrange the images with enough hierarchy that a viewer can understand the direction quickly.
A useful final board can include:
- A title and one-sentence theme statement
- A short description of the intended feeling
- One or two hero images
- Supporting environments and detail studies
- Color swatches or named color references
- Material and texture samples
- Typography direction, if relevant
- A brief note explaining how the generated images relate to the project
Do not let every image compete equally. Use scale, spacing, and grouping to show which qualities are central and which are supporting evidence.

Choosing a presentation tool
For a team or client process, a collaborative moodboard workspace such as Miro can be useful when you need shared frames, comments, uploads, organization, and presentation mode. It suits review and discussion better than a folder full of unlabelled image files.
A moodboard template or digital moodboard editor such as Canva is often a better fit for a solo creator who wants drag-and-drop layouts, grids, text, templates, collaboration, and quick PNG or JPG export. Choose it when polished arrangement and straightforward export matter more than an open-ended workshop canvas.
Readers already working in Adobe’s ecosystem can also consider the Adobe Firefly Boards workflow with Lightroom. Adobe documents a process for bringing Lightroom photos into a canvas and arranging them into a moodboard; this is an adjacent option for organizing existing creative assets, not a claim of direct Midjourney integration.
A drawing tablet is optional, not a Midjourney requirement. It may help if you want to crop, annotate, sketch over references, or arrange visual material more tactilely, but a mouse or trackpad is sufficient for the core workflow.

Commercial use
Midjourney’s commercial-use guidance says subscribed users can generally use their generated images, but a business grossing more than $1 million USD annually must use a Pro or Mega plan for commercial use. Terms can change, and the correct plan may depend on the account and business circumstances, so review the current terms before relying on a generated image in paid work.
If you upscale another user’s image, the original creator owns that image. That is separate from generating your own work from references and should be considered when selecting images from a shared gallery or public workflow.
Plans and changing features
The listed Midjourney plans are Basic, Standard, Pro, and Mega. The supplied plan documentation lists monthly prices of $10, $30, $60, and $120 respectively, with annual billing shown at a 20% discount. Prices, features, availability, and plan rules are subject to change; treat those figures as a snapshot rather than a permanent price list.

Common mistakes and fixes
| Problem | Why it happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The results feel unrelated | The Moodboard contains too many incompatible references | Remove outliers or create separate boards for separate directions. |
| The images are attractive but unsuitable | The prompt describes style but not the required subject or scene | State the subject, environment, lighting, mood, and composition directly. |
| The output does not match a reference exactly | References guide new creations rather than guaranteeing duplication | Use references for visual qualities and judge the result as an interpretation. |
| The final layout requires heavy cropping | The default 1:1 ratio was used too late in the process | Choose the board format first and generate with the appropriate --ar value. |
| Controls conflict or are unavailable | Moodboard controls were mixed with incompatible Style Reference parameters | Do not combine Moodboards with --sv or --sw; choose one control strategy. |
| The board looks like an image grid | No hierarchy, labels, annotations, or project context were added | Curate a shortlist and assemble a designed presentation board afterward. |
| A confidential direction becomes visible | Midjourney is open by default, and public Discord channels remain public | Review visibility settings and plan limitations before uploading sensitive references. |
| A later revision cannot be reproduced | The prompt and settings were not saved | Archive the prompt, version, Moodboard code, aspect ratio, and selected parameters with the export. |
A compact production checklist
- Define the audience, feeling, palette, materials, lighting, composition, and output format.
- Collect references that express those qualities.
- Separate incompatible directions into different Moodboards.
- Create the board through Moodboards → New Moodboard on midjourney.com.
- Choose the board’s aspect ratio before generating the main set.
- Apply the board through Personalization or with
--pand its ID. - Write prompts for the subject and scene; do not expect the board to do all the describing.
- Generate hero, environment, material, color, detail, and other supporting studies.
- Judge the images as a group and narrow or broaden the reference set as needed.
- Refine useful images with Pan, Zoom Out, Variations, Remix, Vary Region, or Editor.
- Organize a shortlist and save reproducibility information.
- Assemble the final board with hierarchy, labels, color references, and context.
- Check privacy and commercial-use requirements before sharing or publishing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a Midjourney Moodboard the same as a finished digital moodboard?
No. A Midjourney Moodboard guides the aesthetic of generated images; it is not normally the finished collage. Assemble the selected images afterward in a layout or collaboration tool with labels, swatches, notes, and hierarchy.
What is the difference between a Midjourney Moodboard and a Style Reference?
Use a Moodboard for a broad project aesthetic made from multiple references. Use a Style Reference when you need narrower control over a particular look, such as its colors, medium, textures, or lighting. Moodboards cannot be combined with –sv or –sw.
Can I use Midjourney Moodboard images commercially?
Yes, but check the current terms and your account circumstances. Midjourney’s guidance says subscribed users can generally use generated images, while businesses with more than $1 million USD in annual gross revenue must use a Pro or Mega plan for commercial use.
The Bottom Line
The most reliable workflow is two-stage: use a focused Midjourney Moodboard to establish the project’s visual language, then generate varied but related image studies and assemble the strongest results into a deliberately designed presentation board.
