To make DIY storybook art, choose a book structure first, map each page with thumbnail sketches, reserve space for words, then create illustrations in a medium you can control. Let wet artwork dry completely before folding or binding, assemble the pages in order, and review the finished book as both a story and an object.

You can make a separately assembled book, a multi-panel accordion, or a folded eight-page book. Watercolor, colored pencils, markers, crayons, and collage are all workable choices; the best combination depends on your format, available materials, and whether you are working alone or with children.

What DIY storybook art actually involves

A handmade storybook combines three jobs: writing or sequencing a story, designing pages, and making physical artwork. Treating those jobs separately often creates pages where the text has nowhere to go or illustrations that do not advance the action. Planning the page sequence before making finished pictures prevents that problem.

The Walt Disney Family Museum’s “From Open Studio: Children’s Book Illustration” activity recommends mapping the characters, settings, objects, and text, then making small mock-ups. That approach is useful whether the final book is a classroom project, a family keepsake, or a personal art exercise.

Illustrator and author Il Sung Na puts the character-first idea this way: “To make a picture book, I don’t just need a story… I need characters.” The quotation appears in The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s accordion-book activity. A character’s appearance, movement, and point of view can give every page a visual thread.

Choose the book structure before you draw

Construction determines the number and shape of your pages, where a spread opens, and which materials you need. Decide on the physical form before producing final art.

Assembled or bound pages

For a conventional book, create individual pages, add covers if desired, check the sequence, and join the pages with glue, paste, or another binding method. The National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA) activity “Pulling It All Together” advises deciding the page count and page size first, then selecting cover or binding materials that fit the form. This option gives you separate surfaces for drawing and makes it easy to replace a page before binding.

Accordion book

An accordion is one continuous folded strip. Each panel is a page, so the story can be read panel by panel or displayed as one long scene. The Metropolitan Museum activity supplies a model for a mix-and-match accordion book and lists printer paper, a ruler, scissors, and drawing media such as colored pencils, markers, or crayons. Because the panels remain connected, mark their order before you add final lettering.

Folded eight-page book

A folded eight-page format turns one sheet into a small book through a planned sequence of folds and, where the demonstrated pattern calls for it, cuts. The Montclair Art Museum’s “Cyber Studio: Draw and Talk Book” activity has makers draw, add watercolor, wait for the paint to dry, and then fold the sheet into book form. It is a compact choice when you want the pages and cover to come from a single sheet.

Format How it is constructed Planning implication Typical materials named by the activities
Assembled or bound pages Separate pages are arranged and joined; covers and binding can be added. Choose page count and dimensions before drawing, and keep a clear front-to-back order. Paper, drawing media, optional cardboard covers, glue or paste, binding supplies, ruler, scissors.
Accordion One strip is divided into connected panels with repeated folds. Plan one scene or text block per panel and identify the reading direction before finishing art. Printer paper, ruler, scissors, colored pencils, markers, or crayons.
Folded eight-page sheet A single illustrated sheet is folded into a small eight-page book using a demonstrated fold pattern. Reserve the cover and every panel in the thumbnail plan; complete wet media before folding. Paper, ruler, scissors, drawing tools, and watercolor when following the Montclair activity.

Plan the story one page at a time

  1. Set the purpose and audience. Decide whether the book will be read aloud, handled by young children, displayed, or used as an art lesson. That choice affects the amount of text, the durability you need, and how much space to leave for pictures.
  2. Choose the page count and dimensions. NMWA places these decisions before the choice of covers or binding. A folded sheet, an accordion strip, and separate pages do not provide the same number or shape of reading surfaces.
  3. Write a one-sentence action for each page. Examples include “Mina hears a sound,” “the fox appears,” or “the friends find the way home.” Keeping one clear action per panel prevents a tiny format from carrying too many events.
  4. Make thumbnail layouts. Draw small rectangles for every page or accordion panel. In each rectangle, place a quick symbol for the character, setting, important object, and words. The Disney Family Museum specifically uses layout sheets and small mock-ups to test these relationships before finished illustration.
  5. Reserve text space deliberately. Leave a quiet area in the composition for a sentence or label. Do not finish a detailed background where the words must go. If the story will be handwritten, make the text area large enough for your actual lettering.
  6. Check continuity. Compare a character’s clothing, scale, direction of movement, and key objects from one thumbnail to the next. A repeated visual detail helps readers understand that separate panels belong to the same story.
  7. Make a rough dummy. Fold scrap paper in the chosen structure, number the panels lightly, and place the thumbnails in it. Read through the dummy in order. Correct a missing transition, upside-down panel, or crowded page before investing in final art.

Gather materials for the chosen format

Start with the least complicated supply set that supports your medium. The activities do not require one specific paper brand, paper weight, or kit, and no single medium is mandatory.

Core supplies

  • Paper suited to the selected structure: individual sheets, a strip for an accordion, or one sheet for a folded book.
  • Pencil for thumbnails and light guidelines.
  • Ruler for panel divisions, margins, and straight edges.
  • Scissors when the selected fold pattern or panel preparation calls for them.
  • Glue or paste for collage and for joining pages or covers where needed.
  • Optional cardboard for covers and additional binding supplies for an assembled book.

Choose an illustration medium

Medium What it is good for Process point to plan
Watercolor Transparent color, atmosphere, and broad painted shapes. Allow the painting to dry fully before folding or assembling. If you need paper for this medium, “watercolor paper for illustration” is a useful generic search phrase; the activities do not specify a brand, weight, or size.
Colored pencils Controlled lines, layered color, and detailed characters or objects. Build color gradually and keep pressure consistent across pages.
Markers Strong, readable color and quick page coverage. Test whether ink shows through your paper before completing both sides of a page.
Crayons Direct, tactile marks that work well for children’s projects. Use clear shapes and strong contrast so small panels remain legible.
Collage Cut or torn papers, painted textures, and mixed surfaces. Prepare pieces before gluing, then allow adhesive to set while pages lie flat.

The NMWA activity names watercolors, crayons, collage materials, colored pencils, markers, paper, optional cardboard covers, glue or paste, binding supplies, rulers, and scissors. The Metropolitan Museum’s accordion activity similarly uses printer paper, a ruler, scissors, and dry drawing media. These lists are starting points, not a required shopping list.

Make the illustrations without losing the story

Work from the thumbnails

Enlarge each approved thumbnail rather than improvising a new composition on the final page. Recheck the character, setting, object, and text area from the plan. Keep the most important action visually dominant; decorative marks should not compete with it.

Using dry media

Colored pencils, markers, and crayons let you work directly on a dry page and adjust details as you go. Establish the character’s main shape first, then add setting and small objects. Repeat a limited set of colors or marks so the pages feel related. Leave the lettering area open until the image is complete, then add words with enough contrast to read at the intended size.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using watercolor

  1. Lightly transfer the thumbnail’s major shapes to the final page.
  2. Paint the largest areas first, keeping the reserved text space relatively quiet.
  3. Add character features and important objects after the broad color is in place.
  4. Set the page aside until it is completely dry.
  5. Only then fold, cut, glue, or bind the sheet.

This order follows the Montclair draw-and-talk activity, which has makers add watercolor, wait for the paint to dry, and then fold the sheet into a book. Rushing the fold can crease wet paint or transfer color to another panel.

Using collage

Cut or tear background papers, character shapes, and objects before applying adhesive. Lay the pieces on the thumbnail or a scrap mock-up, adjust overlaps, and glue only after the composition reads clearly. Painted collage papers are another possible source of texture; the Eric Carle Museum describes making them in its watercolor-painted collage papers activity. Keep adhesive away from fold lines when a page must bend.

Assemble each structure

Assembled or bound book

  1. Place the finished pages in reading order beside the cover materials.
  2. Check that illustrations and text are upright and that no page is missing.
  3. Trim only after the order and margins are confirmed.
  4. Join pages with the glue, paste, or binding method appropriate to your construction.
  5. Attach optional cardboard covers and leave the book undisturbed while adhesive sets.

If a page is wrong, fix the sequence before binding. Once pages are joined, corrections are harder and may damage the artwork.

Accordion book

  1. Mark the panel divisions with a ruler on the paper strip.
  2. Fold along the divisions, alternating the direction so the strip expands and collapses like an accordion.
  3. Number the panels lightly on the back while the strip is open.
  4. Place the thumbnails across the panels, checking which edges meet when the book is closed.
  5. Draw, color, or collage on the panels, then erase planning marks when the work is dry and secure.

The Metropolitan Museum’s activity is a useful visual reference for the mix-and-match accordion approach. Because the panels remain attached, a single panoramic image can cross a fold, but keep faces and essential words away from the crease.

Review the finished storybook

  • Page order: Open and close the book several times to confirm that every panel appears in the intended sequence.
  • Text and image relationship: Read the words aloud and ask whether the picture adds information, emotion, or action instead of merely repeating the sentence.
  • Legibility: Check that lettering contrasts with its background and that important characters remain recognizable at the book’s actual size.
  • Physical function: Fold the accordion, turn the bound pages, or close the eight-page book gently. Repair loose collage pieces or binding before sharing it.
  • Continuity: Look for accidental changes in character features, setting, or object placement that could confuse a reader.

Troubleshoot common problems

The pages feel overcrowded

Return to the thumbnail sheet and remove a secondary object or shorten the text. One readable action with clear space is stronger than several competing details, especially in a small folded format.

The story jumps between panels

Add a transition panel or revise the page actions so each one causes the next. A rough dummy exposes this problem before final artwork is made.

Paint is still wet at assembly time

Stop folding or binding. Let the work dry flat, then test an inconspicuous edge before stacking pages. Build drying time into the schedule instead of treating it as an afterthought.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The accordion reads backward

Open the strip completely, number the panels, and mark the front cover and reading direction. Reposition thumbnails before adding final art; connected folds make an order error visible but not automatically correctable.

Words disappear into the picture

Redraw the text area in the thumbnail, simplify the background there, or move the lettering to a quieter panel. The text-and-image check belongs in planning, not only at the end.

Making the project work with children or in a class

Give children a small set of decisions in a clear order: choose the format, decide the page actions, make thumbnails, select one or two media, create the art, wait for drying, and assemble. Adults can prepare fold lines, supervise scissors and adhesive, and help with page numbering without taking over the visual decisions.

For a group project, have each maker produce a thumbnail before anyone receives final paper. Compare the thumbnails for repeated characters and a coherent sequence, then assign pages or panels. A shared accordion can display everyone’s work, while separate pages are easier to rearrange before binding.

Museum and art-education organizations publish free activity instructions that can supplement a lesson. Use the Disney Family Museum planning activity for layout and mock-ups, NMWA for page-size and binding decisions, The Metropolitan Museum for accordion construction, and Montclair Art Museum for the folded draw-and-talk sequence. Each resource demonstrates a process; none establishes a universally best format, medium, or supply choice.
