You can create an original image with ChatGPT Images by describing the subject, action, setting, mood, and visual qualities you want, then refining the result with short, targeted edits. For a Ghibli-inspired feel, describe qualities such as hand-painted animation backgrounds, layered green scenery, soft natural light, expressive character design, and warm watercolor-like colors; ask for original characters and settings rather than a copy of a specific artwork.
This guide covers the current ways to start an image, write a useful prompt, refine the result, and think carefully about rights and commercial use.
What is ChatGPT Images?
ChatGPT Images is the image-creation and editing experience in ChatGPT. OpenAI’s current Help Center describes ChatGPT Images 2.5 and says image creation is available on all tiers; Images with thinking is listed for Plus, Pro, and Business. Features and access can change, so check the current interface and Help Center rather than relying on older screenshots or model names.

You can ask for an image in a conversation or open Images from the sidebar. The current Help Center also documents templates, uploaded-image editing, and sketch-based input on mobile where available. You do not need to select an older model name to follow this tutorial.
Can ChatGPT make Studio Ghibli-inspired art?
You can ask for broad visual qualities that suggest hand-painted animated fantasy, such as layered scenery, soft natural light, expressive shapes, a quiet sense of wonder, and a warm watercolor palette. The result is not an official Studio Ghibli image, and no prompt guarantees an exact look or acceptance.
Use plain-language visual descriptions and make the character, setting, and design original. OpenAI Academy advises: “When in doubt, request ‘generic’ or ‘ownable’ versions of a design rather than imitating a specific brand, product, or artwork.” This is product guidance, not a legal determination.
Ways to start an image

How to create an original scene
- Open ChatGPT Images from the sidebar, or ask for an image in a conversation.
- Describe the purpose and scene: subject, action, setting, mood, and a few visual qualities.
- Include important composition, lighting, or other constraints, but keep the first prompt clear rather than adding unrelated details.
- Review the result and request one or two specific changes at a time.
- If the interface offers saving or sharing, choose the option that suits your needs.
A reliable prompt formula
Build a prompt from these elements:
- Purpose: what the image is for, if that affects its format or tone.
- Subject and action: who or what appears and what is happening.
- Setting: where the scene takes place.
- Mood and visual qualities: for example, quiet wonder, layered foliage, soft natural light, and watercolor-like colors.
- Composition and lighting: framing, viewpoint, and the kind of light you want.
- Constraints: elements to preserve, avoid, or keep original.
Prompt for a new illustration
Create an original hand-painted animated-film illustration of [subject] [action] in [setting]. Use layered scenery, soft natural light, expressive shapes, a quiet sense of wonder, and a warm watercolor-like palette of [colors]. Compose it as a [portrait, square, or landscape] image, with [framing or viewpoint]. Make the character, setting, and design original; do not copy a specific artwork, brand, or character.
Example: countryside scene
Create an original hand-painted animated-film illustration of two children riding bicycles along a quiet countryside lane after summer rain. Use layered green scenery, soft sunlight breaking through clouds, expressive shapes, and a warm watercolor-like palette of moss green, muted blue, cream, and amber. Keep the children small within the landscape and give the scene a quiet sense of wonder. Make the characters and setting original.
How to transform an uploaded image
- Open an image conversation and use the image-upload option available in your interface.
- Upload an image you own or have permission to use, and explain how it should guide the new result.
- Describe what to preserve, such as the composition, subject, or background, and what visual qualities to change.
- Review the result and ask for targeted corrections if needed.
Photo-transformation prompt
Use this uploaded image as a reference for an original hand-painted animated illustration. Preserve the composition, people’s relative positions, and the main background landmarks. Use soft natural light, layered environmental detail, expressive shapes, and warm watercolor-like colors. Keep the characters and design original, and do not add logos, text, or recognizable existing characters.
Preservation instructions are guidance, not a guarantee of exact identity or unchanged details. Check the result carefully, especially when people are pictured.

How to improve the first result
Refine the image step by step. Ask for one or two changes at a time—such as adjusting the light, simplifying the background, changing the palette, or refining one detail—then inspect what changed. State what should remain unchanged.
If you select an area to edit, selection highlights may be imprecise and changes can extend beyond the highlighted region, according to the OpenAI Help Center. If an edit affects other parts of the image, try a more targeted instruction or start again from the original.
Example targeted edits
Keep the composition and subjects unchanged. Soften the afternoon light and simplify the distant background while preserving the foreground plants.
Keep the people, their positions, and their clothing unchanged. Refine only the person on the left’s hand, keeping the same pose and lighting.

Saving, sharing, and provenance
Use the save, copy, or share options shown in your interface if you want to keep or distribute an image. OpenAI says its generated images carry provenance signals. Those signals are not proof of factual accuracy, legal ownership, or context.
