FastCap, in this context, is EZ Concept’s custom zinc-annealed cold-formed steel profile system for forming recessed channels in drywall or plasterboard. It can define wall niches, ceiling recesses, shadowlines, bookshelves, concealed hardware and lighting details. It is not a prebuilt niche box: the profile, board layout, finish and any waterproofing or electrical work must be specified for the project.
What FastCap is—and what it is not
The name “FastCap” is used for several unrelated products. For architectural work, it refers to EZ Concept’s recessed channel and niche profile system. The manufacturer describes custom-made zinc-annealed, cold-formed steel sections that are inserted between sections of plasterboard or drywall to create a controlled recess or reveal. Product information is available from the regional manufacturer pages for Australia and the United States; geometry, ordering information and availability can differ by region.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThat distinction matters during design and procurement. FastCap supplies a finishing profile and a way to define the edge of a recess. It does not, by itself, specify your stud layout, board thickness, fixing method, electrical design, waterproofing assembly or tile build-up. Those items remain part of the project’s wall or ceiling construction and must be coordinated with the current regional technical documents and the responsible trades.
Where a FastCap recess can be used
The documented applications cover both vertical and horizontal surfaces. A recess may be purely visual, such as a shadowline, or functional, such as a shelf or a concealed service zone. The following examples are manufacturer-described uses rather than a complete construction specification.

| Application | How the profile is used | Design questions to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Living-room or hallway niche | Creates a clean-edged inset for artwork, objects or display lighting. | What depth and width suit the object, and how will the rear surface be finished? |
| Bedside shelf | Forms a recessed shelf integrated into a bedroom wall. | Will the recess carry meaningful weight, and is separate support required? |
| Built-in bookshelf | Defines the opening around shelving or cabinetry. | How will cabinetry, shelf loads and the drywall framing meet the profile? |
| Ceiling recess or shadowline | Creates a continuous or segmented ceiling detail. | How will board joints, access panels, lighting and movement at the perimeter be handled? |
| Concealed lighting or hardware | Provides a deliberate channel for a light source or hidden fitting. | Where will drivers, wiring, access and heat dissipation go? |
| Shower or wet-area niche | Forms the edge of an inset shelf that is then waterproofed and tiled to continue the wall finish. | Which complete membrane, substrate, slope and tile system is approved for the location? |
INVI Concept’s project examples show living-room décor niches, a bedside shelf, recessed lighting and a concealed power outlet. Its shower example describes a wall rebate converted into an inset shelf, then waterproofed and tiled. These examples demonstrate the design possibilities; they do not establish universal dimensions, load ratings or a standard wet-area assembly. See the example gallery and description at INVI Concept.
Specify the profile before anyone cuts the wall
A successful niche starts with a coordinated specification rather than a last-minute opening in the board. FastCap profiles are presented as custom-sized components, so the dimensions and edge condition should be settled before framing, board ordering and service rough-in.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Identify the exact regional product. Record the manufacturer, profile family, regional page and revision of the technical information being used. Do not assume an Australian detail, a United States detail and a locally stocked section are interchangeable.
- Define the recess function. State whether the opening is decorative, a shelf, a bookcase surround, a shadowline, a lighting cove, a concealed outlet zone or a shower niche. Function affects depth, access, load support, heat, cleaning and water management.
- Set the finished opening. Dimension the visible opening after plasterboard, skim, paint, tile, trim and any diffuser are accounted for. A nominal framing dimension is not necessarily the finished niche size.
- Coordinate surrounding construction. Show the profile in the reflected ceiling plan, elevations and wall sections. Mark board thicknesses, framing, corners, services, cabinetry, tile build-up and access requirements. The profile’s custom dimensions should be checked against these drawings before ordering.
- Confirm the edge and end treatment. Decide whether the profile terminates into a wall, returns around a corner, ends at a shelf or continues as a ceiling line. The visible junction determines whether an end is closed with board or MDF and where a reveal is needed.
- Obtain the current installation information. The public product pages establish applications and selected finishing guidance, but they do not publish a universal step-by-step sequence for cutting studs, fixing the steel, installing board or treating every joint. Use the current regional installation document and project-specific manufacturer support for those details.
This process prevents a common error: ordering a section by its nominal profile name while the finished opening, board layers or tile thickness have not been agreed. If a dimension, fixing detail or load condition is not stated in the documentation for your profile, treat it as an item requiring confirmation, not as permission to improvise.
Wall niches: coordinate function, structure and services
Wall recesses are often placed where plumbing, electrical cables, ventilation or structural members already compete for space. Draw the niche elevation and a section through its deepest point. The section should show the finished face, profile, board or substrate, cavity, framing and any service zone.
A decorative niche normally needs a durable rear surface and a finish that can be cleaned without damaging the profile edge. A shelf or bookcase opening may need independent framing or cabinetry support; the FastCap section should not be treated as a load-bearing shelf unless the project documentation specifically says so. For a concealed power outlet, coordinate the box location, cable route, access and applicable electrical requirements before the wall is closed.
At corners and intersections, align the visible reveal rather than only the hidden framing. A small mismatch in return depth can read as a crooked line once painted. Use a full-size sample or marked-up elevation when several niches must align across a room.

Ceiling niches, coves and shadowlines
On a ceiling, the profile can define a recessed panel, a perimeter shadow gap or a channel for indirect light. Ceiling work magnifies alignment errors because the line is visible from multiple positions and often runs across a large area.
Set out the ceiling grid, board joints, access panels, sprinklers, vents and light fittings together. Decide whether the recess is continuous or interrupted at corners and penetrations. Confirm how the profile meets bulkheads and walls, and allow for the final paint sheen: a sharp, dark shadowline can make a small irregularity more noticeable than a flat ceiling.
Do not use a decorative channel to conceal an unplanned service conflict. Drivers, junctions and maintenance access must remain reachable, and any required fire, acoustic or movement detailing belongs in the project’s construction documents.
Finishing the profile and board junction
EZ Concept Australia’s finishing guidance says a FastCap profile end can be closed with plasterboard or MDF. It recommends using a reveal angle to achieve a flush finish and applying gap filler where plaster meets the inside of the profile. These are manufacturer FAQ notes, not a substitute for the current installation guide for your exact section.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Plan the sequence around the finished edge:
- Close the end deliberately. Choose board or MDF according to the surrounding construction and the finish schedule. Make sure the closure does not reduce the required opening or obstruct a service.
- Keep the reveal plane consistent. A reveal angle helps establish a clean, flush transition. Check the line with a straightedge before compound or plaster cures.
- Treat the board-to-profile gap. Where plaster meets the inside of the steel section, use the specified gap filler or joint treatment. Do not bury an open gap under paint and expect it to remain invisible.
- Prepare for paint. The Australian FAQ says the steel can be painted with standard wall paint when the surface is free of dust, dirt and oil. Cleanliness and compatibility of the full coating system still need to be confirmed on the actual project.
Paint sheen and colour affect how deep a niche appears. Darker interiors increase visual depth but can expose uneven coverage; a high-contrast edge makes the reveal more graphic. If the profile will be powder-coated instead of site-painted, record that finish in the order and coordinate it with adjacent trims.
Adding LED lighting inside a niche
An optional FastCap LED finishing section is documented in the Australian datasheet dated October 2025. It incorporates a 9 × 18 mm rebate intended to house most standard LED strips or extrusions. That dimension is a rebate size, not a guarantee that every strip, diffuser, extrusion, connector or driver will fit. The datasheet is available at EZ Concept’s LED Finishing Section PDF.

Before ordering an illuminated profile, check the complete lighting assembly:
- Measure the strip, extrusion and diffuser, including clips, end caps and bend radius.
- Confirm the strip’s voltage, wattage per metre, total run length and driver capacity.
- Provide a route and access point for the driver and connections; a narrow recess is not a service hatch.
- Check whether the chosen diffuser gives the desired dot-free appearance at the viewing distance.
- Confirm heat management, dimming controls and local electrical requirements with the lighting and electrical trades.
- Keep the LED channel dimension and the selected components on the drawing so substitutions can be checked rather than assumed.
For a ceiling cove, include the viewing angle and maintenance method. For a wall niche, decide whether the light washes the rear panel, the shelf surface or the opening edge. The same 9 × 18 mm rebate may produce very different visual results depending on orientation and diffuser choice.

Shower niches require a complete wet-area system
A FastCap profile does not waterproof a shower niche by itself. The documented shower example specifically describes the inset shelf being waterproofed and tiled to continue the surrounding wall finish, but the cited material does not provide a universal membrane, substrate, corner-treatment or compliance specification.
For a wet-area design, nominate the entire approved system before fabrication:
- the wall substrate and framing arrangement;
- the compatible waterproofing membrane and primer;
- corners, penetrations and the transition between the profile and the surrounding wall;
- a fall on horizontal shelf surfaces so water does not pond;
- tile adhesive, grout, movement joints and sealant compatible with the membrane;
- inspection and sign-off requirements for the jurisdiction and project.
Keep the niche away from unnecessary pipe penetrations where possible, and make the finished shelf depth large enough for the tile build-up without creating a sharp, uncleanable pocket. The waterproofing contractor should follow the membrane manufacturer’s details; do not substitute a generic sealant for a specified system.
How to compare a FastCap option with another detail
There is no independent performance comparison in the available product material, so compare the actual project requirements rather than assuming one profile is universally better. Use this checklist during design review.

Common mistakes and practical fixes
Ordering before the finished size is known
Symptom: the niche is too shallow after board, plaster or tile is installed. Fix: dimension the finished opening in section and obtain written confirmation of the custom profile size before ordering.
Treating the profile as a complete niche box
Symptom: framing, rear lining or shelf support is missing from the site plan. Fix: show the profile as one component within the wall or ceiling assembly and assign each surrounding element to the appropriate trade.
Assuming every LED part fits
Symptom: the strip or diffuser cannot be inserted into the channel, or the driver has nowhere accessible to go. Fix: compare the measured lighting assembly with the documented 9 × 18 mm rebate and approve substitutions before installation.
Painting over a contaminated steel surface
Symptom: poor adhesion, fisheyes or visible marks along the reveal. Fix: remove dust, dirt and oil as directed in the regional finishing guidance and confirm the coating system for the actual finish.
Assuming a shower niche is waterproof because it uses FastCap
Symptom: the recess has no documented membrane continuity, shelf fall or penetration detail. Fix: specify and inspect the complete wet-area system before tiling.
Using an old or different regional detail
Symptom: the delivered section does not match the drawing or the installer cannot reconcile dimensions. Fix: check the current regional page, datasheet revision and order confirmation, then resolve discrepancies with the manufacturer before closing the wall.

What to hand to the installer
A useful installation package should include the profile identification and revision, plan and elevation locations, a section showing finished dimensions, board and substrate build-ups, framing and service coordination, end and corner details, paint or tile finish, LED component schedule where applicable, and the wet-area membrane details where applicable. Add photographs or a mock-up approval for prominent niches.
Because the public information does not establish one universal cutting and fixing sequence, the installer should work from the current technical document for the supplied section rather than a generic internet diagram. Record any field change that affects the opening, reveal alignment, lighting clearance or waterproofing continuity.
Maintenance and handover
For painted niches, provide the paint system and colour reference so later touch-ups do not introduce a visibly different sheen. Keep LED drivers, junctions and controls accessible, and hand over the exact strip, diffuser and power details. In tiled wet areas, retain the membrane and tile product information, cleaning guidance and sealant replacement recommendations.
Inspect the finished work from normal room viewpoints and with the intended lighting switched on. Check that reveals are straight, closures are flush, corners are clean, shelves drain where required and no service access has been sealed behind a permanent finish.
Bottom line
FastCap is a flexible way to give drywall and plasterboard niches, ceiling recesses and shadowlines a defined metal edge, with an optional LED-channel configuration documented at a 9 × 18 mm rebate. The best result comes from treating it as a custom architectural component: settle the finished geometry, coordinate framing and services, specify the end and paint treatment, verify lighting dimensions, and use a complete approved waterproofing system in wet areas. Regional dimensions, availability and installation instructions must be confirmed for the profile actually being ordered.
