To crochet a hyperbolic coral reef, make a piece that grows through repeated stitch increases. Adding stitches more frequently generally makes it expand faster and form deeper ruffles. There is no single required yarn, hook size, or increase schedule: treat a small sample as an experiment, changing one feature at a time to see how the material and stitch pattern affect the shape.
What makes crochet “hyperbolic”?
In ordinary flat crochet, increases can make a piece spread outward. Hyperbolic crochet uses increases repeatedly as the work grows, producing a ruffled surface that models a negatively curved geometry. The Institute For Figuring describes the basic relationship simply: the more often a maker increases, the faster the model grows and the more crenellated it becomes. How to begin a small hyperbolic crochet sample
Start with yarn and a crochet hook, then use a repeatable stitch pattern that adds stitches as the work grows. The sources do not prescribe one universal increase ratio or pattern, so the useful goal for a first sample is not to match a fixed model; it is to notice how changing the rate of increase affects the fabric.

This is an experimental craft process, not a recipe with one guaranteed finished shape. The IFF gallery invites makers to explore the many possibilities of the technique rather than follow a single required pattern.
Choose materials for the surface you want
Yarn and a crochet hook are a practical starting point, but neither a particular yarn weight nor hook size is established as best. The IFF describes work made with wool, cotton, silk, flax, soy yarn, plastic bags turned into “plarn,” electrical cables, videotape, and electroluminescent wire. Its gallery also suggests trying combinations such as thick worsted yarn with fine mohair, as well as string, plastic, and wire. These are examples of materials used or suggested—not requirements. The gallery notes that the same stitch pattern can behave differently in stiff acrylic and floppy silk.

When choosing, think about the qualities you want to explore rather than expecting a material to dictate a precise shape:
- Stiffness and drape: A firmer material and a more flexible one can give the same pattern a different feel and fall.
- Thickness and texture: Changing yarn thickness or surface texture changes the character of the crocheted surface. Mixing fine and thick materials is one way to experiment.
- Scale and handling: String, plastic, wire, and conventional yarn are different options to try; select a material that suits the scale and handling of your project.
There are no standardized comparisons establishing the exact result of a given yarn, hook, or tension. Make small samples before committing to a larger piece, and compare like with like where possible.

How the Crochet Coral Reef project relates to the craft
The Crochet Coral Reef is an art, mathematics, science, environmental, and community project associated with the Institute For Figuring and co-created by its directors, Margaret and Christine Wertheim. The project overview dates its beginning to 2005, when Christine Wertheim suggested crocheting a reef after reading about coral bleaching associated with rising sea temperatures. Its forms draw on hyperbolic geometry and forms found in living reefs, but the project describes its crocheted models as art objects invoking reef-like seascapes—not documentary representations of actual reefs. Technique, exhibitions, and permission
You may learn and use hyperbolic crochet freely. That is distinct from organizing an exhibition or program based around the named Crochet Coral Reef project: the Institute For Figuring says those activities require permission. Starting or exhibiting a Satellite Reef also requires prior IFF permission and a Partnership Agreement. An individual crochet project does not, on the information provided by the project’s rights and permissions page, require that project permission.

The author page lists the book as published by Institute For Figuring Press in Los Angeles in 2005, with 112 pages and ISBN 0-9779622-1-0. It is not a prerequisite for trying the craft.
