The best way to cut a screw depends on what must happen after the cut. To shorten a threaded screw and still use its threads, secure it in a vise, run a nut onto the screw to mark the finished length, cut beside the nut with a metal-cutting hacksaw blade, file the end, and back the nut over the cut to reform the first thread. To remove a protruding or damaged fastener, use bolt cutters, a reciprocating saw, an oscillating tool, or an angle grinder according to the fastener’s size and the available clearance.

Use the comparison and procedures below to choose a cutter without sacrificing usable threads, damaging the surrounding surface, or creating avoidable flying-metal and spark hazards.

Choose the cutting method before you touch the fastener

First decide whether the cut piece must remain a working screw or whether you are simply removing an obstruction. A thread-preserving cut needs controlled workholding, a clean square cut, and burr removal. A removal cut prioritizes access and speed; a rough end is acceptable because the fastener will not be reused.

Method Best application Access and effort Finish and thread implications
Bolt cutters Suitable thicker fasteners and quick removal Fast, but the handles and jaws need room Often leaves a rough, notched end; file it if threads must work
Hacksaw Manual cuts, narrow gaps, and controlled shortening Reaches confined spaces; requires more effort, especially on larger screws With a sharp metal blade, produces a controllable cut that can be filed and chased with a nut
Reciprocating saw Powered cutting of metal fasteners Quick, but the saw body and stroke can be awkward around small work Metal-cutting blade leaves an end that normally needs deburring
Oscillating tool Cutting a protruding screw flush to a nearby surface Compact head reaches corners and close clearances; attachment compatibility matters Can make a flush cut with less surrounding clearance than a reciprocating saw
Angle grinder Rapid cuts on accessible metal fasteners Fastest approach for many jobs, but requires the most setup and control Creates heat, sparks, and a sharp burr; wheel, guard, and workholding are critical

These trade-offs align with the method comparison in Bob Vila’s guide, updated August 29, 2025, and the manual-cut guidance from Popular Mechanics. A tool that is powerful enough is not automatically the right tool: clearance, the fastener’s diameter and material, the required finish, and whether threads must survive are the deciding factors.

Safety setup for every method

Cutting a screw produces sharp chips, a hot offcut, and sometimes sparks. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) fact sheet “Hand Tools – Cutting Tools for Bolts, Cables, and Strapping,” last revised January 16, 2024, recommends selecting a cutter for the material’s kind, hardness, and size and holding the work securely.

  • Wear safety glasses or goggles. Add a face shield over eye protection when the operation can throw fragments.
  • Wear protective, cut-resistant gloves that still let you control the tool. Keep gloves, sleeves, hair, and jewelry away from reciprocating and rotating parts.
  • Clamp the screw, bolt, or workpiece in a vise or with a suitable clamp. Do not hold a small fastener in your hand while sawing or grinding it.
  • Warn people nearby and keep them out of the fragment path. A cut section can eject when the tool breaks through.
  • Choose a blade, wheel, or cutter rated for the fastener’s material and diameter. Do not force a tool beyond its rating.
  • After the cut, assume the offcut and the remaining end are hot. Let them cool or handle them with an appropriate tool.

Additional controls for an angle grinder

Bosch Professional’s angle-grinder guidance calls for the correct guard for the job, an accessory approved by the tool maker, and an inspection for cracks or other damage before use. Clamp a workpiece that is not stable under its own weight, clear paper, solvents, sawdust, and other flammables from the area, and keep bystanders away. Follow the grinder’s manual and applicable local requirements for the exact wheel, orientation, and protective equipment. Sparks can travel farther than the cut, and the wheel can grab if it is twisted or pinched.

Prepare a screw when the cut end must remain usable

Preparation determines whether the shortened fastener will accept a nut afterward.

  1. Identify the fastener. Check its diameter, thread type, and material. Select a blade or cutter intended for that size and material.
  2. Measure the finished length. Mark the cut line clearly. Leave enough thread for the nut or fitting that will be installed.
  3. Install a nut before cutting. Thread a nut onto the screw and place its outside edge at the intended cut line. The nut protects the existing threads during clamping and gives you a reference for the cut.
  4. Secure the work. Clamp the fastener in a vise with the cut area accessible. Support the part so vibration does not bend the screw or damage its threads.
  5. Cut beside the nut. Keep the blade or wheel square to the fastener. Cutting immediately beside the nut leaves the nut on the usable side and avoids removing more length than planned.
  6. Deburr the end. File the cut face and its outer edge until no raised burr can obstruct the nut. A slight chamfer helps the nut start.
  7. Restore the thread. Add a little lubricant to the cut end and work the nut back and forth over the cut. Backing the nut off across the end removes remaining burrs and helps reform the first thread.

Popular Mechanics specifically describes a 24-teeth-per-inch hacksaw blade for this sequence. The two-nut technique is more reliable than cutting an unprotected end and hoping a nut will start afterward.

Method 1: Cut with bolt cutters

When bolt cutters make sense

Use bolt cutters when the fastener is thick enough for the cutter’s jaws, the work is accessible, and speed matters more than a perfectly square finish. They are particularly useful when removing a damaged or protruding fastener that will not be reused.

Procedure

  1. Secure the work so the fastener cannot rotate or spring away as the jaws close.
  2. Open the jaws fully and position the fastener deep in the jaw area recommended by the cutter maker. Keep your hands behind the handles and away from the cutting zone.
  3. Squeeze the handles smoothly rather than striking them or adding a pipe extension. Stop if the fastener is beyond the cutter’s capacity.
  4. Inspect the remaining end. If it must accept a nut, file the notch and burrs, then chase the thread with a matching nut. For a critical or load-bearing connection, replace a badly damaged fastener instead of relying on a deeply deformed thread.

Bolt cutters can leave a tapered, crushed, or notched end. That finish is normally acceptable for removal but requires more repair than a hacksaw cut when the screw will be reused.

Method 2: Cut with a hacksaw

Why the hacksaw is the versatile manual choice

A hacksaw fits into narrow gaps, needs no power source, and gives you direct control over the cut. Its drawback is effort: a larger or harder screw takes many strokes. A sharp blade intended for metal is essential; a bi-metal blade can improve performance.

Shorten a threaded screw step by step

  1. Thread the nut onto the screw and set its outside edge at the desired finished length.
  2. Clamp the screw in a vise. Protect finished surfaces with soft jaw covers or suitable padding, while keeping the cut line exposed.
  3. Fit a metal-cutting blade. Popular Mechanics’ described setup uses 24 teeth per inch. Tension the blade correctly for the saw frame.
  4. Place the blade immediately beside the nut and begin with light, straight strokes to establish a groove. Keep the frame square to the screw.
  5. Use the full blade length with steady pressure. Let the teeth cut; excessive force can bend the blade or strip teeth.
  6. Support the offcut as the blade breaks through so it does not tear the last thread or fall onto a finished surface.
  7. File the new end and edge, apply lubricant, and back the nut over the cut to clear the burrs and help restore the thread.

Cut in a confined location

When the screw cannot be removed, protect the nearby surface with a thin, nonflammable shield and use short, controlled strokes. Leave room to move the frame without scraping the surrounding material. If the blade cannot travel far enough for a safe stroke, switch to an oscillating tool rather than twisting the hacksaw or forcing the blade.

Method 3: Cut with a reciprocating saw

Best use

A reciprocating saw is a powered option for metal fasteners when a metal-cutting blade is installed. It is useful for multiple cuts or a fast removal operation, but its larger body and aggressive stroke can be awkward around small screws, finished panels, wiring, or plumbing.

Procedure

  1. Fit a blade specifically intended for cutting metal and verify that it is locked into the saw.
  2. Clamp the work or immobilize the assembly. Confirm that the blade path ends in open space rather than a hidden cable, pipe, or structural member.
  3. Rest the saw shoe against a stable surface when possible. Start at a controlled speed so the blade does not skate across the fastener.
  4. Keep the blade aligned with the intended cut and let the teeth do the work. Do not lever the saw sideways while the blade is engaged.
  5. Stop before the final breakthrough if the offcut could fall, pinch the blade, or damage the surrounding surface. Support or capture it, then finish the cut.
  6. Allow the end to cool, then file burrs if the fastener remains in service.

Compared with a hacksaw, this method saves hand effort but gives you less tactile feedback. Use it for access and speed, not for the finest thread-preserving finish.

Method 4: Cut with an oscillating tool

Why it excels at flush cuts

An oscillating tool’s angled blade can approach a protruding screw close to a wall, panel, floor, or other surface. It is often the most practical way to cut a fastener flush when a reciprocating saw cannot fit. Blade compatibility depends on the tool’s attachment system, so verify that the metal-cutting blade matches the tool.

Flush-cut procedure

  1. Install the compatible metal-cutting blade and tighten the attachment according to the tool instructions.
  2. Cover or shield the adjacent surface. Leave the blade’s teeth exposed only where the cut will occur.
  3. Secure the assembly so vibration does not pull the fastener away from the surface.
  4. Set the blade flat against the target plane, start at a moderate setting, and establish a shallow kerf before increasing pressure.
  5. Advance slowly until the fastener separates. Keep the tool square to the surface so the blade does not gouge the material around it.
  6. Remove the small offcut with pliers after it cools and smooth any sharp edge with a file.

This method is for access and a close finish, not for preserving a long, clean external thread. If you need a shortened screw that will take a nut, remove it when possible and use the nut-and-file procedure instead.

Method 5: Cut with an angle grinder

When to choose it

An angle grinder is effective for accessible metal fasteners and repeated cuts, but it demands the most disciplined setup. The wheel produces sparks, heat, and abrasive debris, and a cut-off wheel can fracture or kick back if damaged or pinched.

Controlled grinding procedure

  1. Read the grinder manual and install the correct guard for cut-off work. Fit only a manufacturer-approved accessory rated for the grinder’s speed.
  2. Inspect the wheel for cracks, chips, distortion, or other damage. Do not use a questionable wheel.
  3. Clamp the workpiece unless its own weight holds it securely. Position the clamp so the cut does not close on and pinch the wheel.
  4. Clear flammable materials and establish a spark-safe direction. Keep bystanders outside the work area.
  5. Wear the required eye and face protection, gloves, hearing protection, and other equipment specified by the tool maker or local rules.
  6. Start the grinder clear of the work, allow it to reach operating speed, and enter the fastener gently. Keep the wheel straight in the kerf; do not twist it.
  7. Finish the cut without forcing the wheel. Set the grinder down only after the wheel stops, and allow the cut metal to cool before touching it.
  8. File or deburr the remaining end if it will be handled or threaded.

The grinder is usually excessive for one small screw in a finished room. Its advantage is speed on accessible metal; its cost is the need to manage sparks, heat, wheel condition, guarding, and workholding.

An alternate cutter for small machine screws

Some electrician’s wire-stripper multitools include threaded cutting holes. If a hole matches the screw, it can cut small machine screws while supporting the threads on both sides of the cutter. Popular Mechanics lists examples such as 4-40, 6-32, 8-32, 10-32, and 10-24. Confirm the actual hole marking and thread size; do not force a screw into a near match.

  1. Thread the screw through the correctly marked hole to the desired length.
  2. Close the cutter completely with a controlled squeeze.
  3. Open the tool and withdraw the shortened screw. The threaded hole can leave a cleaner end than diagonal cutters, but inspect it and chase the thread with a nut if necessary.

This option is limited to small screws and a tool with the correct threaded holes. It is not a substitute for a hacksaw or powered metal-cutting tool on larger fasteners.

How to cut a screw for removal rather than reuse

When the goal is to eliminate a protruding or damaged fastener, do not spend time protecting threads that will be discarded. Choose the cutter that reaches the fastener without damaging the surrounding assembly.

  1. Expose the cut line. Remove loose material and identify what lies behind the screw. A flush cut is only safe when the blade or wheel will not contact wiring, plumbing, or a structural part.
  2. Stabilize the assembly. Clamp a loose part or brace the work so vibration does not spread cracks or pull the fastener out unexpectedly.
  3. Select by clearance. Use bolt cutters where the jaws fit, a hacksaw where only a narrow stroke is possible, an oscillating tool for a close flush cut, a reciprocating saw for open access, or a guarded grinder where sparks are acceptable.
  4. Protect the surface. Use a shield appropriate to the tool and material. Keep a grinder’s sparks away from flammables and finished surfaces.
  5. Capture the offcut. Hold or support the piece as the cut completes. Wait for it to cool before removal.
  6. Remove the hazard. File or cover the remaining sharp nub if people, cables, or materials could contact it.

Repairing threads and dealing with a rough cut

Burrs prevent the nut from starting

File the cut face flat, then break the outside corner with a few angled strokes. Apply lubricant and work a matching nut over the end. If the nut will not pass after careful filing, stop rather than forcing it and damaging the mating part.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The cut is too short

A cut cannot be lengthened. If the remaining threaded engagement is inadequate, replace the fastener or choose a longer one. Do not rely on a nut barely engaged on a damaged end.

The fastener bends during cutting

Bending usually indicates inadequate support or excessive tool force. Re-clamp closer to the cut, use a sharper or correctly rated blade, and let the cutter work at its intended pace.

The end is hot

Set the offcut down in a safe location and allow it to cool. Do not place hot metal on paint, plastic, wood, or solvent-contaminated material.

The surrounding surface is at risk

Stop and change methods if the tool cannot be controlled in the available clearance. A slower hacksaw or compact oscillating tool is preferable to a powerful cutter that can wander into the finished surface.

Which method should you use?

  • Choose a hacksaw for one controlled cut in a narrow space or whenever thread preservation is the priority.
  • Choose bolt cutters for an accessible, thicker fastener that will be discarded and where speed matters.
  • Choose a reciprocating saw for powered removal with open access and a suitable metal blade.
  • Choose an oscillating tool when the screw must be cut flush beside a surface or in a corner.
  • Choose an angle grinder for fast, accessible cuts only when you can provide the required guard, approved wheel, stable workholding, spark control, and clearance.
  • Choose a threaded-hole wire-stripper multitool for a small machine screw only when the hole marking exactly matches the screw.

The reliable thread-preserving sequence is consistent regardless of the cutter: mark the finished length with a nut, secure the fastener, cut squarely, file the burrs, lubricate, and back the nut over the cut. For removal, prioritize reach, stability, and protection of the surrounding work, then eliminate any sharp remainder.
