A bright kitchen is not limited to white cabinets. The 49 kitchens collected by Architectural Digest in its December 24, 2024 archive roundup range from calm, light-filled rooms to saturated color blocks, hand-painted tile, rustic materials, and highly personal displays. The most successful examples coordinate paint with daylight, surfaces, circulation, and the objects used every day.

Use the ideas below as a decision guide rather than a recipe. Start with how your kitchen must work, then decide whether brightness should come from wall and cabinet paint, a colorful ceiling or trim, reflective tile, larger windows, open shelving, or a combination.

What “bright kitchen” means in the AD archive

The roundup’s central lesson is variety. Brightness may mean visual lightness, strong color, energetic pattern, or a room that feels open and sociable. The 49 examples are an editorial survey, not a ranking, consumer study, or test of which design performs best. They are useful because they show several independent ways to make a kitchen feel more alive.

Choose the kind of brightness you want

Soft brightness for a small or shaded kitchen

Use one related family of light colors on walls, ceiling, and tall cabinetry to reduce visual breaks. A warm off-white can keep a north-facing room from feeling stark, while a cooler pale neutral can balance a kitchen that receives strong afternoon sun. Paint sample boards rather than relying on a digital swatch; surrounding countertops, flooring, and artificial light can shift the apparent color.

Gloss is not a substitute for light. A washable satin or eggshell finish on walls usually gives enough reflection without emphasizing every irregularity. Keep the ceiling lighter when you want maximum lift, but a very pale tint can make a high ceiling feel less distant.

Energetic brightness through color blocking

Color blocking works when each hue has a job. In the archive, a coastal Massachusetts kitchen combines a red 1953 Chambers stove, yellow Bruno Rey chairs, Cook’s Blue trim, and lilac Pyrolave countertops. Those elements were photographed together in one home; they are an example of coordinated contrast, not a tested formula to copy.

For your own room, select one anchor color, one supporting color, and a neutral. The anchor can belong to cabinetry or an island, the supporting color to trim or furniture, and the neutral to walls and ceiling. Repeat a color at least twice so it looks intentional, but vary its proportion: a small amount on a door or chair can balance a larger painted island.

Green that connects to daylight and wood

Emma Chamberlain’s pistachio-green kitchen, designed by Proem Studio, pairs green with wood ceiling paneling and skylights. The useful idea is the relationship between color, natural light, and a warm material. If you choose green, view samples at morning, midday, and night under your installed lamps. Greens can appear yellow beside warm wood and blue beside cool stone.

Let tile, stone, and pattern establish the palette

Several archive kitchens use tile as the visual identity of the room. A Tangier kitchen combines local tile and reclaimed marble with a vintage English pendant and Malian textiles. Another London kitchen pairs a Wolf stove and IKEA table with hand-painted Iznik tiles and vintage chairs. A blue-and-white Mexican kitchen demonstrates how a limited two-color scheme can still feel expressive.

Patterned tile should be selected before final paint. Pull one quiet background color from the tile for walls, then reserve the strongest tile color for a smaller painted element such as a door, island end, or window trim. When tile is handmade, expect variation; test several pieces rather than matching paint to a single tile.

Use stone as a brightness control

Light marble or pale composite surfaces can bounce light, while dark or highly veined stone creates contrast. Reclaimed materials add character but may contain several undertones. Place your paint sample directly beside the countertop and backsplash in both daylight and under task lighting. If the stone is visually busy, a simple cabinet color will make the room easier to read.

Paint around, not over, a statement backsplash

Painted walls near a cooking area must be compatible with the cleaning and heat conditions of that surface. Confirm the paint manufacturer’s suitability for the substrate and keep a wipeable backsplash where splashes are likely. Decorative tile can carry the pattern so the surrounding paint remains calm.

Make daylight and layout do as much work as color

Decoration cannot compensate for a difficult path between refrigerator, sink, cooktop, and dining area. Interior designer Frank de Biasi summarized the priority plainly: “For me, layout and function and livability come first.” Plan the work zones before choosing a palette.

Open shelving and a larger sink window

In one Texas renovation, some upper cabinets were removed in favor of open shelves and a large window was added above the sink. Architectural Digest describes the result as airier. The transferable lesson is to protect a valuable light source and avoid filling every wall with opaque storage. If you replace cabinets with shelves, measure the storage you are losing and decide which dishes can remain visible.

Ceiling changes and skylights

Another archive example gained sunlight through a changed ceiling, while the pistachio-green kitchen uses skylights. Structural changes require professional assessment, but the design principle is simple: bring light from above when side windows cannot provide it. Paint a ceiling alteration in a light value if you want it to recede, or use a controlled color when the ceiling itself is intended as a feature.

Island seating and connected dining

Some kitchens in the roundup use open plans and chairs along the island so guests can gather without entering the cooking path. Others join the kitchen directly to a dining area. Keep seating outside the main work aisle, provide enough clearance for doors and drawers, and choose upholstery or paint finishes that can tolerate the way the room is actually used.

Turn cookware and tools into part of the composition

Julia Child’s kitchen is a notable archive example because storage is visible and purposeful. Child wrote that “The kitchen proper was our major concern because, to us, it is the beating heart and social center of the household.” A pegboard wall organizes heavy-duty copper and iron cookware, with pieces displayed by size.

Rust-Oleum Cabinet Transformations & Trim Paint, Cadet Gray, Quart
  • CABINET TRANSFORMATION: Refresh outdated cabinets, vanities, furniture and trim with rich Cadet Gray color and a smooth semi-gloss finish
  • DURABLE PERFORMANCE: Easy-to-clean finish resists dirt and grime while standing up to household chemicals
  • SMOOTH APPLICATION: Outstanding flow and leveling help create a beautiful finish with brush, roller, pad applicator or airless sprayer
  • FAST PROJECT COMPLETION: Dries to touch in 30 minutes, recoats in 2 hours and is ready for normal use after 24 hours
  • INTERIOR CABINET COATING: Ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms and other interior cabinet and trim applications

Open storage works best when the objects are edited. Group pans by material or scale, leave breathing room around frequently used tools, and paint the backing wall a color that separates the cookware from the room. Copper reads warmly against blue, green, or deep neutral paint; pale walls create a lighter, more utilitarian effect. Secure heavy items properly and keep clear of appliance heat and splash zones.

A paint-first process for a bright kitchen

  1. Record the fixed elements. Photograph flooring, counters, backsplash, appliances, hardware, and window light. Note which items will remain; they determine your undertones.
  2. Define the functional zones. Mark preparation, cooking, cleanup, storage, and seating paths on a simple plan. Do not let a paint decision force an unsafe or awkward circulation route.
  3. Choose the visual anchor. Decide whether the anchor is a tile backsplash, an island, cabinetry, a colorful appliance, or a view. Everything else should support it.
  4. Build a three-part palette. Select a dominant field color, a secondary architectural color, and an accent. Test them with the actual materials, not only with paper chips.
  5. Sample large areas. Paint large boards and move them around the room for several days. Check direct sun, shade, evening lamps, and the color reflected from nearby walls.
  6. Prepare every surface. Degrease kitchen walls, dull glossy areas, repair cracks, and remove loose paint. Cabinets need a sound, clean substrate and a primer compatible with the existing finish; follow the coating manufacturer’s preparation and curing directions.
  7. Paint in a logical order. Complete ceiling work first, then walls, trim, and cabinetry or furniture. Protect counters and appliances, and allow each coat to dry before masking an adjoining color.
  8. Reinstall and edit. Once the paint has cured, return only the tools, dishes, and decorative pieces that support daily use and the intended composition.

Match sheen and durability to the surface

  • Ceilings: A low-sheen finish minimizes glare and hides minor imperfections.
  • Walls: Eggshell or satin is generally easier to wipe than flat paint; confirm the product’s kitchen suitability.
  • Trim and doors: A harder, slightly higher-sheen finish can make edges crisp, but it will reveal dents more readily.
  • Cabinetry: Use a coating formulated for cabinets or furniture, with the required primer and cure time. “Washable” does not mean immediately scrub-proof.
  • Furniture: Test adhesion on a hidden area and remove wax, grease, or failing finishes before priming.

Common problems and practical fixes

The room looks colorful but not bright

Too many mid-tone surfaces can absorb light even when the hues are cheerful. Keep one broad, light-reflective field—often the ceiling, upper wall, or backsplash—and concentrate saturated color on smaller elements.

The paint clashes with tile

Compare the paint to several tile pieces under the room’s actual lighting. If the tile has competing undertones, choose a neutral that repeats the least noticeable undertone instead of trying to match the most obvious stripe.

Open shelves feel untidy

Reduce the number of displayed items, group them by height, and store rarely used equipment elsewhere. A painted shelf backing can create order, but it cannot replace editing.

Dark cookware overwhelms the wall

Increase spacing, arrange pieces from large to small, and use a lighter or more contrasting background. Keep the display away from steam, grease, and areas where a falling object could injure someone.

Color changes dramatically at night

Check the lamp color temperature and replace bulbs consistently before judging the paint. If the room still shifts more than you like, move the strongest color to a surface that receives steadier daylight, such as a cabinet run away from the window.

How to choose among the 49 ideas

Choose the strategy that solves your actual constraint. If the room lacks daylight, prioritize window access, ceiling light, and a coherent pale field. If the room feels bland despite good light, add one deliberate color block or a patterned backsplash. If storage is the problem, study the pegboard and open-shelf approaches, but keep safety and capacity ahead of display. If the kitchen must host guests, plan seating and dining connections before decorative details.

The archive also supports a less literal conclusion: personality matters. Homeowner Mary Kitchen asked, “At the end of the day, if you don’t have a sense of humor, what’s the point?” Shulamit Nazarian described her kitchen as “a place of gathering and nourishment.” A bright kitchen should therefore look like the people who use it, not like a formula assembled from unrelated trends.

What the archive can—and cannot—tell you

Architectural Digest presents 49 archival kitchens in its December 24, 2024 article by Madeleine Luckel and River Davies. The count describes that article only. It does not establish a market preference, measured performance advantage, or ranking among the rooms. The photographed products, paints, tiles, and fixtures may have changed or may not be available now, so verify current specifications and suitability before purchasing or installing anything.
