Yes—StoneSet porous paving can be part of a safe parking lot, but only when it is designed as a complete pavement and drainage system. The resin-bound surface is not a substitute for structural calculations, stable subgrade, edge restraint, falls, overflow routes or wet-slip verification. StoneSet Australia markets its commercial surface with a Drainage Matrix for vehicle loads up to 10 tonnes, while its heavy-traffic guidance says the actual build-up must be designed for the expected traffic and ground conditions. Treat those figures as configuration-specific manufacturer claims, not a blanket approval for every car park or truck route.

What “suitable for a parking lot” actually means
A parking lot has to do several jobs at once: carry parked and moving vehicles, resist braking and turning stresses, shed or store stormwater, remain grippy when wet, retain its edges and stay serviceable as the ground moves. A porous resin-bound finish addresses only part of that performance.

Its Drainage Matrix uses a non-UV polyurethane resin with larger graded aggregate. StoneSet says that combination can support vehicle loads up to 10 tonnes and may reduce total system depth compared with traditional permeable concrete bases. For higher structural capacity, the company describes installation over engineered permeable concrete bases. The project engineer must confirm whether the proposed configuration is adequate for the actual vehicles, axle loads and subgrade.

The manufacturer’s own heavy-traffic document is explicit that its details are guidance rather than a universal construction detail: “The details in this specification are intended only as a guide in specifying StoneSet products, actual designs should be developed by the project designers taking into account the specific circumstances of the intended application.”
The six parts of a safe porous parking-lot system
1. The StoneSet surface blend
The resin, aggregate size, aggregate grading, thickness and finish affect permeability, texture and wear. A heavy-traffic example shows a 25 mm StoneSet layer using 6 mm aggregate. That is an illustrated option, not a default thickness for every site. Confirm the selected blend, resin type and thickness on the project drawings and quote.
2. The structural base
Below the finish, the base distributes wheel loads and provides void space for water. In the drainage-cell arrangement illustrated by StoneSet, the cell is backfilled with 6 mm blue metal or 75–100 mm no-fines concrete, with a compacted DGB20 base beneath it. A different soil, traffic class or groundwater condition can require a different depth or material. Base thickness cannot be selected from the surface product name alone.
3. The subgrade
Clay, loose fill, rock, high groundwater and variable compaction all change how a porous pavement behaves. A qualified designer should establish soil type, bearing strength, infiltration capacity, seasonal moisture and allowable settlement before fixing the pavement build-up. If infiltration is unsuitable, the system may need lined storage and a controlled outlet rather than discharge into the soil.
4. Edges and movement joints
Vehicle wheels apply concentrated forces at kerbs, ramps and free edges. StoneSet’s heavy-traffic detail calls for permanent edge restraint and geotextile in the illustrated arrangements. Its notes also call for movement joints every 10 m in heavy-traffic work. The designer should locate joints and restraints around building interfaces, pits, ramps and changes in pavement type, not simply copy a spacing onto an irregular plan.

5. Surface grading and stormwater controls
Permeability lets water pass through the surface; it does not make the surface a drainage channel. StoneSet states in its heavy-traffic specification: “The StoneSet layer can not be used to direct the flow of water.” The parking lot still needs designed falls, collection points where required, storage volume, overflow routes and a legal downstream discharge or reuse arrangement.
6. Traffic operations
Design vehicles include more than the largest parked car. Map delivery trucks, waste vehicles, emergency access, turning heads, ramps, braking zones and repeated wheel paths. A car-only bay can have a different load case from an entrance used daily by rigid trucks. StoneSet advises consultation before heavy-truck use, and heavy-vehicle structural layers should follow the applicable Australian standards through the project designer.
How to choose the build-up for your vehicles
Give the civil or pavement designer a written loading brief. Include the design vehicle, gross mass, axle configuration, tyre pressures if known, number of passes, turning frequency, parking duration and whether snowploughs, forklifts or buses are possible. Also state whether the lot is open to the public, because predictable passenger-car use and uncontrolled commercial access are different risk profiles.
| Design question | Why it changes the pavement | Evidence to obtain |
|---|---|---|
| What vehicles use the lot? | Axle loads and turning create different stresses from static passenger-car parking. | Vehicle schedule, gross and axle loads, swept paths. |
| How often do heavy vehicles pass? | Repeated loading can govern fatigue even when a single vehicle is within a stated limit. | Daily and peak-period pass counts. |
| What is beneath the pavement? | Weak, wet or expansive soils need thicker, stabilised or differently drained layers. | Geotechnical investigation, infiltration and compaction results. |
| Where does stormwater go? | Infiltration, lined storage and piped discharge require different details. | Hydraulic calculations, overflow level and authority requirements. |
| Where are wheels most aggressive? | Ramps, corners, entries and braking zones experience concentrated shear. | Turning templates and circulation plan. |
The manufacturer’s “up to 10 tonnes” statement applies to its surface-and-Drainage-Matrix combination as described on its commercial page. It does not establish capacity for every StoneSet blend, every base or every truck. If the design vehicle approaches or exceeds that figure, or if heavy vehicles turn frequently, obtain a project-specific structural design and written confirmation from StoneSet and the engineer.
Permeability figures: useful, but not interchangeable
StoneSet documents quote different rates in different contexts. Its heavy-traffic specification says rates can reach 103 L/m²/s. The commercial description and Commercial Brochure 2025 state 60 L/m²/s for their respective product descriptions. The brochure also states up to 15% void content. These numbers should never be combined into a single guaranteed value: they may reflect different blends, test methods, specimens or system descriptions.

Ask for the permeability test method, specimen construction, aggregate blend, resin, age and direction of flow. Then use the result in the site hydraulic model, alongside the storage and discharge capacity below the surface. A high laboratory rate cannot prevent ponding if the base is saturated, clogged or unable to release water.

Drainage design that prevents ponding
Step 1: Decide whether water infiltrates or is detained
Use geotechnical results and groundwater constraints to choose direct infiltration, a lined reservoir with controlled discharge, or a hybrid arrangement. Keep the porous surface above seasonal groundwater and protect drinking-water or contaminated sites as required by local rules.
Step 2: Set finished levels and falls
Grade the lot so small construction tolerances do not create low spots. The surface may pass water vertically, but kerbs, ramps and adjoining asphalt still need positive falls. Show where runoff goes when the sub-base is full; do not rely on the resin-bound layer to move it sideways.
Step 3: Size the storage layer and outlet
Calculate void storage in the drainage cell, no-fines concrete or aggregate reservoir, then check drawdown time for the governing storm. Include underdrains, inspection points, flow controls and an overflow route where infiltration or discharge can be exceeded.
Step 4: Protect the system from sediment
Keep construction sediment, leaf litter and soil out of the open surface and drainage cell. Stabilise upstream verges, install temporary erosion controls and remove them only after surrounding earthworks are complete. A porous pavement that starts clogged cannot deliver its design rate.

Step 5: Commission hydraulically
After installation, inspect falls, joints, edge restraints, pits and outlets. Hose or rain-test representative areas, check that water enters the pavement rather than bypassing it, and record any slow-draining locations before opening the lot.
Wet-slip safety and the P5 claim
StoneSet’s Commercial Brochure 2025 states a P5 slip rating. That is a manufacturer brochure claim, not proof that every colour, aggregate blend, finish or contamination condition will achieve the same result. StoneSet’s technical FAQ says slip-test results vary among mixes and advises requesting product-specific testing.
The heavy-traffic drawing shows a fine sand cast to assist slip resistance. Specify that treatment, the application rate and the finish in the installation documents, then verify the completed surface where pedestrians brake, cross vehicle paths or use ramps. Test the exact proposed blend under the relevant wet condition; do not substitute a rating from another colour or aggregate size.
- Request the laboratory report for the precise blend and resin.
- Identify whether the reported result is for a new, clean specimen or an aged and contaminated surface.
- Check accessible routes, gradients, tactile areas and transitions separately from the general parking bays.
- Plan cleaning for oil, algae, tyre rubber and fine sediment, all of which can change wet traction.
Construction sequence for a reliable installation
- Survey and investigate. Confirm levels, utilities, soil profile, groundwater and existing drainage. Mark heavy-vehicle routes and interfaces with other pavements.
- Approve the design brief. Have the project designer issue the loading cases, pavement layers, falls, storage volume, overflow and joint layout. Obtain current StoneSet technical details for the selected blend.
- Prepare the subgrade. Remove unsuitable material, proof-roll, control moisture and compact to the specified requirement. Correct soft spots before placing the base.
- Install geotextile and restraints. Use the designer’s geotextile arrangement and provide permanent kerbs or other edge restraints before aggregate placement.
- Build and test the structural layers. Place the drainage cell, blue metal or no-fines concrete option, and DGB20 or other specified base in controlled lifts. Record thickness and compaction results.
- Install drainage hardware. Connect underdrains, pits, inspection points, flow controls and overflow routes. Test connections before covering them.
- Place the StoneSet layer. Install the specified 25 mm/6 mm example or the project-specific alternative, including the specified fine sand cast where required. Protect the fresh surface from traffic and contamination.
- Inspect and hand over. Check joints, edges, levels, texture, clean-out points and markings. Provide as-built drawings, product batch information, test reports and a maintenance schedule.
Common failures and the corrective action
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or fix |
|---|---|---|
| Ponding after ordinary rain | Blocked surface, saturated storage, inadequate falls or a restricted outlet. | Inspect the surface and outlets, survey levels, test drawdown and clean or repair the controlling layer. |
| Ravelled or cracked edge | Missing restraint, wheel overruns or movement at an interface. | Reinstate permanent restraint and repair the transition; review turning paths. |
| Rutting in wheel paths | Weak subgrade, insufficient base thickness or loads beyond the design case. | Obtain pavement and geotechnical review rather than patching only the resin surface. |
| Slippery wet ramp | Wrong blend, inadequate texture, contamination or loss of sand-cast treatment. | Clean, retest the exact surface and apply an engineer-approved remedial finish. |
| Water bypasses the porous area | Adjoining pavement levels or kerbs direct runoff around the system. | Correct surface grading and provide a designed inlet or overflow path. |
| Rapid loss of infiltration | Construction sediment, migrating fines or poor maintenance. | Trace the sediment source, clean accessible components and revise upstream erosion control. |
Maintenance and operational controls
Put maintenance in the facility’s asset plan before opening the lot. Sweep leaves and sediment before they enter pores, remove oil promptly with a method compatible with the resin, keep drainage inlets and inspection points clear, and inspect after major storms. Record ponding duration and recurring wheel-path damage; trends often reveal a blocked outlet or subgrade movement before a visible failure.

How StoneSet compares with other parking-lot surfaces
The right comparison is a project-equivalent design, not a product slogan. Ask every option supplier and designer for the same evidence.
| Decision axis | Question to ask for StoneSet | Question to ask for any alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Structural capacity | What layer design supports the stated vehicle and pass count on this subgrade? | What tested or engineered pavement section supports the identical load case? |
| Wet slip | What is the result for the exact blend, finish and wet condition? | What test method and surface condition produced the rating? |
| Hydraulics | What permeability and void data apply to this blend, and how is sub-base storage sized? | What infiltration, storage and overflow details are included? |
| Construction depth | What excavation and base thickness does the geotechnical design require? | What excavation, reinforcement and curing time are required? |
| Maintenance | How are sediment, oil and blocked outlets managed? | What cleaning, resurfacing or replacement cycle is expected? |
| Approvals and accessibility | Does the local authority accept the proposed drainage and pedestrian finish? | Does the same approval and accessibility evidence exist for the alternative? |
No independent comparative performance data is established here, so a decision should be based on equivalent project calculations, test reports, maintenance obligations and installed-life costs—not on a generic permeability or slip number.
Warranty, design life and document control
StoneSet’s Commercial Brochure 2025 states a 10-year product guarantee and a 25-year design life. Confirm the applicable terms, exclusions, substrate requirements, installation conditions and maintenance duties for the specific project; a brochure figure is not a promise that every installed pavement will receive those periods.

Practical sign-off checklist
- Design vehicle, axle loads, turning areas and heavy-vehicle frequency are documented.
- Subgrade investigation, base thickness, compaction and groundwater conditions are accepted by the qualified designer.
- Falls, storage, infiltration or discharge, overflow and inspection access are shown on the drainage drawings.
- Permanent edge restraints, geotextile and movement joints are detailed for the actual plan.
- The exact aggregate/resin blend has product-specific wet-slip evidence and any required fine sand cast.
- Permeability and void figures are quoted with their document, blend and test context.
- Construction sediment controls, commissioning tests and maintenance responsibilities are assigned.
- Current manufacturer documents, warranties and local approvals are filed before work starts.
A StoneSet porous parking lot is therefore a viable option when the complete engineered system—not merely the attractive resin-bound surface—meets the site’s structural, hydraulic and safety requirements.
