To make fabric artwork repeat cleanly, build a tile whose left edge joins its right edge and whose top edge joins its bottom edge. In a layer-based editor, place motifs inside a square, move opposing edge sections to the center, repair the exposed seams, and repeat the operation on the other axis. Then inspect several tiled copies at the scale you expect on the curtains.
The digital tile is not the same specification as the repeat printed on fabric. Before cutting drapery, record the fabric’s horizontal repeat (across its width), vertical repeat (along the roll), usable width, weight, and direction. Those values determine how panels are matched and whether cut lengths must be rounded up.

A repeatable pattern is a finished tile that can be duplicated in every direction without a visible break. The artwork may look attractive inside one square and still fail when tiled if a flower, line, or background tone stops abruptly at an edge. Seamless construction moves the information at each edge to the opposite side so the boundary becomes an interior seam that can be edited.
For dining-room drapery, this matters in two ways. First, a broken repeat creates a vertical or horizontal stripe that becomes obvious when several wide panels hang next to one another. Second, the repeat printed by a fabric supplier affects where each panel starts and ends. A designer therefore has to solve both the artwork problem (making the tile join) and the sewing problem (using the selected fabric’s repeat when calculating cuts).

The workflow below adapts Kristi Linauer’s August 19, 2026 account of designing floral drapery fabric in PaintShop Pro. She used a 27-by-27-inch square with a soft blue-green background, but the edge-swap method works at any document size in a layer-capable editor such as PaintShop Pro or Photoshop.
Decide the pattern before opening the editor
Choose a direction for the finished cloth
A multidirectional pattern can be turned or viewed from any side, which is practical for cushions, Roman shades, and curtains whose panels may be flipped during cutting. A one-directional pattern has a clear top and bottom, such as birds flying upward or stems growing from the hem. It can look more intentional on a window, but every panel must be cut with the same orientation and waste can increase.

Set a motif hierarchy
Plan three visual sizes:
- Large motifs: focal flowers or other forms that establish the rhythm.
- Medium motifs: supporting leaves, blossoms, or branches that connect the focal forms.
- Small motifs: stems, dots, or tiny leaves that close awkward gaps without competing with the main shapes.
Spoonflower contributor Annie Parsons recommends building the composition with large elements first, then medium and small elements. Her practical warning is precise: “Staying away from the edges prevents incomplete elements which won’t repeat well.”
Confirm asset rights
Transparent watercolor and hand-drawn elements are convenient because each motif can sit on its own layer. A purchased package does not automatically grant every kind of use, however. Read the license attached to each asset and confirm that it covers your intended personal or commercial fabric use, any physical products you will sell, and any print-on-demand service you plan to use. Keep a copy of the license with the project files.

Choose a working tile size
Use a square or rectangle large enough to hold the largest motif at the intended viewing scale. Linauer worked at 27 by 27 inches for her floral concept. That number is an example of her document setup, not a required fabric repeat or a recommendation for every room. Work at the resolution and color settings accepted by your chosen printer, and retain an editable layered file as well as an export copy.
Build the seamless tile with the two-axis edge-swap method
The key operation is to move opposite edges to the center, repair the newly exposed center seam, and then do the same on the perpendicular axis. The exact menu names vary by editor, but the logic is the same in PaintShop Pro, Photoshop, and other editors that support layers, selections, guides, and a canvas shift or offset.
- Create the document and background. Make a new square document. Fill a bottom layer with the chosen background color; Linauer used a soft blue-green. Keep the background separate from motif layers so you can adjust it later.
- Place motifs away from the boundaries. Arrange the large flowers and other focal elements inside the tile without allowing any artwork to cross an edge. Add medium forms to connect the composition, then use small elements to fill obvious holes. Leave enough open space for a calm field rather than packing every corner.
- Check the single tile at the intended scale. Zoom out until the square is roughly the size it will appear on a curtain panel. A motif that dominates a monitor may look appropriately quiet when repeated across a window, while a tiny detail may disappear.
- Prepare for the vertical swap. Merge or group only the artwork you want to evaluate, keeping an untouched layered version. Split the tile vertically through its center, or use the editor’s offset command to move the left half to the right and the right half to the left. The former left and right edges now meet in the middle of the document.
- Repair the exposed vertical seam. Inspect the center join at high zoom. Continue stems, leaves, or background color across the seam on new layers. Remove accidental doubled petals and avoid creating a conspicuous straight column. Do not paint over the outer edges; they are now the edges that must remain unchanged for the next tile.
- Perform the horizontal swap. Once the vertical seam is convincing, split the image horizontally through the center or offset it so the top and bottom sections exchange positions. The original top and bottom edges become a new horizontal seam across the middle.
- Fill the horizontal seam. Extend background and motifs across the exposed line, varying the placement so the seam does not read as a bar. Check intersections where the new horizontal repairs meet the earlier vertical repairs.
- Restore clean outer edges. Hide guides and inspect all four boundaries. No motif should be clipped unless the clipping is intentional and has a matching counterpart on the opposite edge. If you need to make an edge correction, repeat the relevant swap afterward; changing an edge invalidates the seam you just solved.
- Export a test tile. Save a flattened copy in the file format and color mode accepted by the printer, but keep the layered master. Name the file with its tile dimensions and orientation so you do not confuse it with a later fabric-repeat specification.
Linauer followed this sequence on her 27-inch square: she arranged motifs without crossing the edges, moved the left and right sections to opposite sides and filled the new center, then swapped the top and bottom sections and filled that center. The result was presented as artwork ready to upload for custom fabric, not as proof that a physical print had been inspected.
Arrange motifs so the repeat does not become a grid
Distribute visual weight
After the edge swaps, duplicate the tile in a three-by-three or larger preview. Look for accidental columns, rows, or checkerboards. Spoonflower’s artwork guidance recommends placing similar large forms at different horizontal and vertical positions so copies do not line up and create distracting bands. If three large flowers form a diagonal in one tile, shift one of them or vary the surrounding support motifs before exporting.

Keep edges intentional
An element that stops at an edge must continue naturally from the opposite edge after duplication. If you do not want a flower to be cut, keep it comfortably inside the tile. Parsons’s edge advice is especially important for large blooms: an incomplete petal at the boundary is repeated four times around every tile and becomes a recurring defect.
Balance density with the room
A dense, small-scale field can read as texture from across a dining room; widely spaced large flowers make a stronger statement and may compete with furniture or artwork. Evaluate the pattern against the approximate width and height of a curtain panel, not only as a close-up square. Leave breathing room around focal motifs so folds do not hide every important detail.

A single tile cannot reveal every problem. Create a temporary preview by duplicating the finished tile horizontally and vertically. Examine it at three scales: close enough to see seam pixels, at the approximate viewing distance of the room, and at the panel size shown in a mock-up.
- At close zoom: check for one-pixel gaps, abrupt color changes, and doubled outlines at repaired seams.
- At room distance: look for stripes, checkerboards, or a large motif that appears far more often than intended.
- At panel scale: confirm that the focal elements land where folds, hems, and headings will not hide them.
A mock-up is a visualization of placement and scale, not a fabric test. In the August 19, 2026 update to her project, Linauer said the first preview made two dark, narrow flowers too prominent. She lightened their stems, reduced the butterfly, added a branch and a small bird, and filled empty areas with more stems. She then planned to order one yard to see the revised design in person. The account does not establish that the yard had been ordered, that print quality had been inspected, or that the dining-room curtains had been completed.

Troubleshoot common repeat failures
| What you see in the tiled preview | Likely cause | Repair |
|---|---|---|
| A pale or dark line at every tile boundary | Background color or texture does not meet exactly at the swapped seam. | Sample the correct background color, paint across the center seam on a separate layer, and repeat the preview. |
| A flower appears doubled or fused at the join | Both halves contain overlapping copies after the edge swap. | Hide or erase one copy, then redraw the transition so the overlap looks intentional. |
| Large motifs form vertical or horizontal rows | Similar forms occupy matching coordinates in adjacent tiles. | Move one focal motif or vary its supporting leaves; preserve the outer-edge relationship by redoing the affected swap. |
| Edges show clipped leaves that look unfinished | A motif was placed too close to an edge without a matching continuation. | Move it inward, or deliberately continue it across the opposite edge using the edge-swap method. |
| The pattern looks upside down on some panels | The artwork is one-directional but was cut or rotated inconsistently. | Mark the top of the design in the file and on the fabric plan; cut every panel in the same direction. |
| The repeat feels crowded at curtain scale | Details were judged only at editing zoom, not at the window’s viewing distance. | Reduce motif count or enlarge the tile, then review a full-panel preview before export. |
| The center seam is clean but a new line appears after an edge edit | An outer edge was changed after the corresponding swap. | Undo the edge change or run that axis’s swap again and repair the seam once more. |
Keep digital tile size separate from fabric repeat
When you submit artwork, the tile may be 27 by 27 inches, 3,000 by 3,000 pixels, or another working size. The printer may impose that artwork at a different physical repeat. Fabric specifications describe the repeat of the printed cloth: the horizontal repeat is measured across the fabric width, and the vertical repeat runs along the roll. Both values matter when adjacent curtain panels are joined or when a pattern must be centered.
A reference from F A B R I C illustrates the distinction with a 5-inch horizontal repeat and a 6-inch vertical repeat. Those figures are explanatory examples, not measurements of Linauer’s tile and not a recommended size for your curtains. Ask the supplier for the actual repeat on the specific fabric base you intend to buy.

| Specification | What it tells you | Why a drapery maker needs it |
|---|---|---|
| Digital tile dimensions | The size of the artwork file or source tile. | Controls editing, export resolution, and the pattern’s internal composition. |
| Horizontal fabric repeat | Distance between matching points across the cloth width. | Helps align motifs when panels are seamed side by side. |
| Vertical fabric repeat | Distance between matching points along the roll. | Determines repeat-compatible cut lengths and the position of motifs from header to hem. |
| Usable fabric width | Width available after selvages or other unusable areas. | Sets how many widths are required for the finished curtain. |
| Design direction | Whether the print is multidirectional or has a fixed top and bottom. | Determines cutting orientation and potential waste. |
Use the vertical repeat when calculating curtain cuts
Patterned cut lengths often need to be rounded to a whole number of vertical repeats so matching drops begin at compatible points. A drapery worksheet hosted by the ERIC document repository gives an instructional example: a 99-inch required cut length with a 15-inch vertical repeat is rounded to seven repeats, or 105 inches. The worksheet then uses that adjusted length in its sample yardage calculation.
That 99-to-105-inch calculation is an example, not a universal allowance. For your project, first determine the finished length, header and hem allowances, pattern placement, fullness, and the selected fabric’s exact vertical repeat. Then:

- Add the construction allowances to the desired finished drop.
- Divide the resulting cut length by the fabric’s vertical repeat.
- Round up to the next whole repeat when a matching starting point is required.
- Multiply the adjusted cut length by the number of vertical widths or drops needed.
- Allow for seams, shrinkage, pattern centering, and any directional cutting requirement specified by the fabric maker or your sewing plan.
For example, if your measured construction length is not an exact multiple of the listed repeat, cutting at the next repeat protects continuity from one panel to the next. Do not substitute the dimensions of your digital tile for the printed fabric’s vertical repeat; they may be entirely different.
Plan panel matching and fabric orientation
Side-by-side panels
Compare the horizontal repeat with the usable fabric width before ordering yardage. A wide horizontal repeat may require careful positioning so a prominent flower does not disappear into a seam. Mark the intended centerline of each panel and note where the design should fall relative to the window, table, or wall.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMatched drops
When two or more drops must match at their top edges, start each drop at the same point in the vertical repeat. This is why the vertical value belongs in the cutting worksheet. If the fabric is one-directional, keep every drop upright even when that creates additional waste.
Fullness, headers, and hems
The amount of fabric needed depends on finished curtain width, fullness ratio, header style, hem depth, lining, and construction method. The repeat references establish how to align patterned cuts; they do not supply a universal yardage formula for every window. Measure the finished design and apply the selected fabric’s specifications rather than relying on the 27-inch artwork tile or the worksheet’s 99-inch example.
Compare design choices before committing to a print
| Decision | Option A | Option B | Choose based on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Orientation | Multidirectional | One-directional | Whether panels may be rotated and whether the room benefits from a clear top-to-bottom reading. |
| Motif scale | Large, widely spaced forms | Small, dense field | Viewing distance, curtain width, folds, and the amount of visual activity already in the dining room. |
| Edge treatment | Keep motifs inside the tile | Deliberately cross and match edges | Whether you want uninterrupted motifs or a more continuous, all-over field. |
| Panel strategy | Center a focal motif on each panel | Let the repeat flow across seams | Window arrangement, seam locations, and the fabric’s horizontal repeat. |
| Production check | Digital mock-up only | Physical sample or one-yard order | Whether color, scale, hand, and print appearance must be verified before cutting expensive yardage. |
A practical pre-order and pre-cut checklist
Before exporting artwork
- Confirm that every tile edge joins its opposite edge in both axes.
- Review a three-by-three or larger tiled preview for stripes, checkerboards, and repeated lineups.
- Check the pattern at close zoom, room distance, and approximate panel scale.
- Confirm whether the composition is multidirectional or one-directional.
- Verify the license for every purchased or downloaded motif and keep the records.
- Save an editable layered master and a clearly named print export.
Before ordering fabric
- Ask for the selected base’s usable width, horizontal repeat, vertical repeat, weight, and direction.
- Decide where focal motifs should sit on each panel and whether seams need a horizontal match.
- Use the supplier’s current file requirements and color information rather than assuming the editor’s defaults.
- If the design is important or the yardage is costly, order a physical sample; a screen mock-up cannot show every print or color difference.
Before cutting
- Measure the finished curtain width and length, including heading and hem allowances.
- Calculate fullness and the number of fabric widths required.
- Round patterned cut lengths to repeat-compatible multiples when matching is required.
- Lay out all drops in the same direction and mark the top edge.
- Recheck motif placement against folds, seams, lining, and the window before making the first cut.
What this workflow can—and cannot—guarantee
Edge swapping gives you a repeatable construction method, and a tiled preview can expose compositional problems before you spend money on fabric. It cannot guarantee a particular printed color, hand, scale, or registration on every fabric base. Those properties depend on the current print service, material, and production settings and should be verified with the supplier and, when necessary, a physical sample.
Linauer’s project demonstrates the design process rather than a completed installation: she revised the floral artwork after seeing a digital preview and said she planned to order one yard. Treat that status accurately. The strongest workflow is to solve the digital seams, test the pattern at curtain scale, obtain the selected fabric’s repeat specifications, and only then calculate and cut the drapery.
