McGregor Coxall’s Lingang Bird Airport is not an airport for aircraft. It is a proposed 110-hectare wetland park and bird sanctuary in Tianjin, China, conceived as a refuelling stop on the East Asian–Australasian Flyway. The “airport” is a planning metaphor: migratory birds need safe places to land, feed, rest and continue, just as people use an airport between long journeys.
The proposal combines constructed wetland treatment, several water habitats, forest, bird hides, public trails and a visitor-and-research building. Its ecological logic is ambitious, but its status matters: New London Architecture currently lists the project as Proposed. The quantities below describe planned design components, not verified construction or measured ecological results.

What the Lingang Bird Airport actually is
Lingang Bird Airport, also called Tianjin Bird Airport, is a landscape-architecture proposal by McGregor Coxall for Lingang in Tianjin. The firm won an international competition for the scheme, according to the 2017 article in Landscape Architecture Frontiers. Rather than building aviation infrastructure, the proposal turns a degraded coastal site into habitat and public landscape.
The site sits on the East Asian–Australasian Flyway, a migration route linking breeding and non-breeding grounds across East Asia, Southeast Asia and Australasia. In the project description, the airport analogy explains a practical ecological need: birds arriving after a long flight require dependable water, food and shelter before they can continue. The intended sanctuary is therefore a stopover landscape, not a destination airport in the conventional sense.

Adrian McGregor, founder of McGregor Coxall, described the idea in a Property Marketing Podcast interview: “The birds are very similar to us in that we get off an airport and we refuel and rest and get our supplies or whatever, and then we go again.” The interviewer’s exact question was, “How does one design a airport for birds?” The grammar is part of the quotation; the design answer is a wetland system.
Why a stopover matters on a long-distance flyway
The 2017 Landscape Architecture Frontiers article reports that some birds travel more than 11,000 kilometres and may fly for up to 10 days without food or water. Those figures are source-reported descriptions of migratory endurance, not a performance claim for every species. They explain why the loss of a single feeding or resting site can affect a route that spans many countries.

Urban growth creates a particular problem at coastal stopovers. Reclamation, landfill, industry, drainage and polluted water can remove the shallow edges and mud where birds feed. A sanctuary designed around migration must therefore do more than plant trees. It has to provide different water depths, exposed feeding surfaces, cover from disturbance and a way to keep the water system functioning through changing conditions.
McGregor Coxall’s stated target is support for more than 50 bird species. That is an intended design capacity on the firm’s project page, not a count of species recorded using a completed site. The proposal’s value lies in assembling habitat types and management infrastructure in one connected landscape.
Starting with a contaminated, waterlogged site
McGregor described the Lingang site as a brownfield area affected by industrial contamination and water accumulation. The academic project article also characterises the setting as a degraded landfill site. In that context, the wetland is both habitat and infrastructure: remediation and water management are built into the landscape rather than treated as separate engineering works.

The proposed sequence is to decontaminate the site and form a constructed wetland. McGregor said recycled black water from a nearby sewage-treatment plant would enter the wetland and receive additional treatment as it moves through the system. The project article also discusses harvesting rainwater and reusing water. These descriptions explain the intended process; the reviewed sources do not provide operating data, treatment results or monitoring records.
A constructed wetland can slow water, expose it to plant roots and microbial processes, and allow sediments to settle. In this project, those functions are tied to habitat creation: the same water movement that supports treatment also creates shallow margins, reed beds and open mud. The design does not present “clean water” and “bird habitat” as unrelated goals.
Three water habitats form the ecological core
McGregor Coxall’s project page identifies three principal water environments. Each offers a different physical condition for birds and gives the wetland a varied edge rather than one uniform basin.
| Planned habitat | Design character | Intended role in the sanctuary |
|---|---|---|
| Island lake with shallow rapids | Open water combined with moving, shallow channels | Creates water surface, islands and varied depths for resting and movement. |
| Reed zone | Dense emergent vegetation along wet ground and water margins | Provides cover and a complex edge while participating in wetland treatment. |
| Mud flats | Exposed, shallow intertidal-style feeding surfaces | Offers open ground where wading and shorebirds can search for food. |
The sources describe these as planned landscape components, not as habitats whose performance has been measured after construction. Their combination is significant because a migration stopover cannot be designed around open water alone. Birds that rest, feed and shelter have different spatial requirements, so the proposal distributes those conditions across one water-management system.
How the proposed water cycle is meant to work
- Address the polluted ground. The brownfield or landfill condition is treated as a primary design problem. Decontamination is part of making the site usable for people and wildlife.
- Bring in a managed water source. McGregor’s interview account identifies recycled black water from a nearby sewage-treatment plant as an input to the constructed wetland.
- Use wetland processes for further treatment. Water is circulated through planted and shallow environments rather than discharged directly into a single open basin.
- Capture additional rainfall. The project article discusses harvested rainwater and reuse as part of the broader water strategy.
- Shape habitat while moving water. The circulation pattern produces the island lake, shallow rapids, reed zone and mud flats described in the project design.
This is a design intention, not evidence that a functioning treatment plant or closed-loop system has been delivered. No reviewed source reports pollutant concentrations, flow rates, maintenance schedules or compliance results. Those would be necessary to evaluate operational performance.

Planned public and research infrastructure
The sanctuary is designed as a public landscape as well as a habitat project. McGregor Coxall lists the following components on its project page:
| Component | Planned quantity | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Bird hides | 14 | Observation structures intended to let visitors watch birds from designated locations. |
| Forest | 20 hectares | A planned wooded area adding terrestrial cover to the wetland landscape. |
| Water Pavilion | 3,500 square metres | Visitor and research centre described as a place for interpretation, learning and study. |
| Walking and cycling trails | 7 kilometres | Planned recreation network through the public landscape. |
The quantities are not a survey of completed facilities. They are the scope stated by the designer. The Water Pavilion is especially important to the proposal’s educational logic: a wetland that people can understand is more likely to connect water infrastructure, migration and urban development in the public imagination. The research function also implies that observation and monitoring were intended to be part of the site’s long-term use.
Keeping visitors near birds without turning the sanctuary into a spectacle
Fourteen hides and a seven-kilometre walking-and-cycling network make access a deliberate design issue. A hide concentrates viewing at a fixed point, which can reduce the need for visitors to approach every shoreline. Trails can similarly direct movement around sensitive areas instead of allowing informal paths to spread through feeding or nesting habitat.
The proposal does not establish a visitor-capacity limit, seasonal closure policy, noise standard or lighting plan. Those details would determine whether public access supports or undermines the habitat. In a delivered sanctuary, managers would need to decide which routes remain open during migration peaks, how cyclists are separated from quiet observation areas, and how artificial light is controlled at night. The source material confirms the planned access network, but not those operating rules.

The landscape also has to balance visibility with refuge. Open mud flats are useful for observation because birds can be seen, yet birds need undisturbed areas where they are not constantly flushed. The design language of hides, islands, reeds and forest suggests a spatial buffer strategy, but no reviewed document reports visitor behaviour or bird responses.

What “proposed” means in this case
New London Architecture’s listing currently labels Lingang Bird Airport Proposed. The same listing displays “Completion 2017,” but that field should not be read as proof that the sanctuary was built or opened. McGregor Coxall’s project page describes the intended scope and does not confirm that every listed element exists on site.
That distinction changes how every number should be read. “More than 50 bird species” is the intended support level; it is not a post-occupancy count. The 14 hides, 20-hectare forest, 3,500-square-metre Water Pavilion and seven-kilometre trail network are planned components, not verified assets. The 110-hectare figure is the reported size of the proposed wetland park and sanctuary.
No reviewed source documents a measured increase in bird populations, changes in habitat condition, water-quality results or ecological outcomes attributable to a completed project. A responsible account can explain the design’s mechanisms while stopping short of calling them proven results.

The airport metaphor is useful when it focuses attention on a bird’s itinerary. A stopover must be located on a route, offer the resources needed for a short stay and connect safely to the next leg. It also has limits: birds do not follow timetables, use runways or experience a single standard of service. Their requirements vary by species, season, tide, weather and food availability.
For planners assessing a project like this one, three questions provide a practical test:

- Works with Latex Paint, Oil-Based Paint & Stains – Premium synthetic filaments hold more paint, reduce streaks, and provide a clean finish with latex paints, oil coatings, and wood stains.
- Are habitat types matched to the species and migration period? Open water, reeds, mud and forest should not be treated as interchangeable. The proposal names more than 50 target species, but the reviewed sources do not publish a species-by-species habitat schedule.
- Can the water system remain safe and reliable? Recycled wastewater, rainfall and wetland treatment require monitoring, maintenance and contingency plans. The proposal explains the intended sources and processes, not their measured operation.
- Is public access arranged around ecological priorities? Hides, trails and a visitor centre can concentrate learning and observation, provided managers can close or redirect areas when birds need undisturbed space.
The sources do not report that one habitat arrangement, water source or visitor plan was tested against alternatives. Comparisons should therefore be framed as design choices and questions for evaluation, not as proven superior solutions.
Why the proposal remains relevant even without outcome data
Lingang Bird Airport demonstrates a way of thinking about urban land that joins remediation, water treatment, habitat and education. A polluted, waterlogged site is not simply cleared and landscaped; it becomes the basis for a constructed ecological system. The airport analogy makes the migration service legible to a general audience, while the wetland details show what that service would require physically.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIts strongest evidence is therefore conceptual and programmatic: the flyway location, the three water habitats, the proposed treatment strategy and the planned public and research facilities. Its weakest evidence is outcome-based, because the reviewed material does not establish construction, operation or post-construction monitoring.
Readers who want to explore McGregor’s broader urban-design framework can look for his book Biourbanism and the related Biourbanism/Book section on McGregor Coxall’s current website. Availability and formats can change, so those details should be checked directly.
The practical takeaway
Designing an “airport” for birds means designing a dependable wetland stopover: clean and managed water, multiple feeding and resting habitats, shelter, carefully routed public access and facilities that support research and learning. McGregor Coxall’s Lingang proposal sets out that model for a 110-hectare Tianjin site on the East Asian–Australasian Flyway. It should be described as a proposed sanctuary with planned components, not as a completed airport or a project with documented ecological results.
