Designing and installing an IKEA kitchen successfully depends on doing the work in the right order: define how the room must function, finish building and utility changes, measure the room accurately, choose an IKEA system, create and verify the plan, then decide which installation tasks you can perform and which require a qualified trade. IKEA’s U.S. process centers on the SEKTION, ENHET, and KNOXHULT systems, its online planner and planning appointments, and an installation service whose scope must be confirmed for your address. The measurements and final plumbing, gas, and electrical locations have to be reliable before a cabinet plan or installation quote can be trusted.
What an IKEA kitchen project actually involves
An IKEA kitchen is a coordinated project rather than a cabinet purchase. You are fitting a system to a real room, connecting appliances and utilities, and finishing surfaces around it. The practical sequence is:

- Define storage, cooking, cleaning, seating, accessibility, and appliance needs.
- Complete major construction and place plumbing, gas, and electrical connections where they will remain.
- Measure every wall, opening, utility point, obstruction, and corner.
- Choose a suitable IKEA kitchen system and develop a layout in the planner or with a planning specialist.
- Check the three-dimensional design, product list, quotation, delivery estimate, and installation estimate.
- Order only after the plan matches the finished room and the installation responsibilities are written down.
- Assemble and install the cabinets yourself, use IKEA’s service, or combine that work with separate licensed trades.
This guide is for IKEA’s U.S. offering. Service availability, fees, system choices, and installation terms can differ by location and can change, so confirm the current details with your local IKEA store or kitchen specialist.
Start with a functional brief, not cabinet colors
List what the kitchen must do
Before opening a planner, write down the decisions the room has to support. Include how many people cook at once, where groceries enter and are unloaded, how dishes move from sink to dishwasher to storage, and whether anyone needs seated or reduced-reach work areas. Note the equipment you already own and any appliance you intend to add, including its dimensions and ventilation requirements from the manufacturer.

- INCLUDES THE ANGLE STUBBY MOST SETS LEAVE OUT — Professional painters know the 2 Inch Angle Stubby is the go-to brush for tight cabinet interiors, window sashes, inside corners, and detailed trim where standard angle brushes are too long. Combined with the 1.5 and 2.5 inch angle sash brushes you have precision cutting-in covered at every scale — baseboards, crown molding, door casings, and ceiling lines.
- FLAT BRUSHES FOR BROAD SMOOTH COVERAGE ON ANY SURFACE — The 1 and 2 inch flat brushes deliver even coverage on walls, furniture, shelving, doors, fences, decks, and wood surfaces. Ideal for applying primers, stains, varnishes, polyurethane, and specialty coatings. - TRUSTED BY PROFESSIONAL PAINTERS AND CONTRACTORS NATIONWIDE — Pro Grade delivers professional-grade results at a price that makes sense for crews who go through brushes on every job. Ideal for property managers, remodeling contractors, apartment turnover crews, maintenance teams, and commercial painting operations. Backed by thousands of verified reviews from working painters. Washable and reusable for multiple projects.
- Storage: Identify cookware, food, small appliances, recycling, cleaning supplies, and items that need to be reachable without a step stool.
- Cooking: Record the size and position you want for the cooktop, oven, microwave, and preparation surfaces.
- Cleanup: Decide where the sink, dishwasher, waste sorting, and drying area should sit in relation to one another.
- Seating and circulation: Mark stools, table edges, door swings, and the paths people use through the room.
- Access and safety: Identify reach limitations, child-safety needs, lighting requirements, and any medical or mobility considerations.
- Existing problems: Write down what frustrates you now, such as inaccessible corners, insufficient drawers, poor task lighting, or a refrigerator that blocks a doorway.
IKEA’s planning-appointment guidance asks customers to bring their needs and current challenges to the discussion. A written brief keeps a visually attractive design from sacrificing storage, work space, or safe circulation.
Make the room ready for dependable measurements
Finish construction before you measure for the final order
IKEA says the room should be measure-ready before you rely on dimensions for planning. Complete major building work, including wall changes and wall or ceiling finishing. Plumbing, gas, and electrical connections should be in their intended final positions. If a wall will be moved, furred out, tiled, or substantially repaired, measure after that work rather than designing around an unfinished surface.
Have a tape measure or laser measure, a pencil, and paper or a notebook available for self-measurement. A digital record is useful, but keep a marked-up room sketch as well so each number remains tied to a specific wall and reference point.
Record more than wall length
| Measure or locate | What to record | Why it changes the plan |
|---|---|---|
| Overall room | Each wall length, ceiling height, and the dimensions of jogs or alcoves | Determines how many cabinet runs and fillers can fit and where tall units can stand. |
| Openings | Every door and window, including width, height, sill height, trim, and swing or opening direction | Controls cabinet height, worktop continuity, and clearance for handles and appliances. |
| Corners | Corner-to-opening distances on both adjoining walls | Prevents a cabinet, filler, or appliance from colliding with trim or an adjacent run. |
| Utilities | Water supply, drain, gas, electrical outlets, switches, appliance circuits, and ventilation points; locate each from fixed wall and floor references | Lets the plan place sinks, appliances, and lighting where connections can actually reach. |
| Obstacles | Vents, radiators, pipes, beams, columns, access panels, uneven areas, and projecting trim | These can consume cabinet depth or require fillers and altered panels. |
| Wall and ceiling condition | Finished surfaces, plumb or out-of-square areas, and any section that still needs repair | Cabinets and worktops need a stable, finished surface; unresolved conditions create fitting problems later. |
Measure each wall in more than one place when floors, ceilings, or walls may not be perfectly level or square. Write down the reference point for every dimension and photograph concealed obstacles before they are covered. These are practical safeguards; your local building professional remains responsible for code, structural, electrical, plumbing, and gas requirements.
Consider IKEA’s paid measurement service
IKEA’s U.S. measurement service documents room dimensions and details such as windows, doors, utility connections, vents, obstacles, wall conditions, and corners. The service page accessed in 2026 lists a $79 fee and says that fee is applied toward qualifying IKEA kitchen installation cost. Treat that as a service price, not a general market rate, and verify the current local fee and qualifying terms before booking.
The measurement visit is not a substitute for construction work. IKEA states that walls and ceilings must be finished and connections must be present. The service does not include design advice unless it is combined with an in-home planning service, inspection behind removed finishes, advice about supplementary work, or measurement for a custom countertop. If any of those are needed, ask exactly which service covers them and what it costs.

Choose the IKEA system and planning route
Understand the three systems IKEA names in the U.S.
IKEA’s U.S. kitchen buying guide identifies SEKTION, ENHET, and KNOXHULT. They are separate systems with their own current guides and product ranges. Do not assume that cabinets, fronts, interiors, legs, or installation details from one system are interchangeable with another. Compare the current system guide and catalog for the room’s dimensions, storage requirements, appearance, and available components before committing.

| System named by IKEA U.S. | How to use the information | What to verify before ordering |
|---|---|---|
| SEKTION | Use its current planning and installation information when building a detailed kitchen layout. | Cabinet sizes, interior fittings, fronts, panels, legs or suspension components, and compatibility with your chosen worktop and appliances. |
| ENHET | Review the system-specific guide and available combinations for the way you want the room to function. | Available modules, dimensions, finishes, support components, and how the selected pieces meet walls, corners, and utilities. |
| KNOXHULT | Check its current guide for the available kitchen configurations and installation requirements. | Module dimensions, included components, options for your appliance arrangement, and the treatment of end panels and corners. |
The table deliberately avoids ranking the systems: the current guide for each system is the authority on what is available in your market and edition.
Use the planner for a draft, then involve a specialist when the room is complex
You can begin with IKEA’s kitchen planner using your measured room and utility locations. For a room with several corners, unusual openings, structural constraints, or a large appliance package, a planning appointment adds a second review. IKEA says an appointment can produce a 3D design, a complete product list, a price quotation, and estimates for delivery and installation.
Bring your room sketch, photographs, appliance specifications, functional brief, and questions about lighting, worktops, panels, and fillers. Ask the specialist to identify every item needed to finish exposed ends, support the worktop, close gaps, and connect the chosen appliances. A rendered view is not proof that a cabinet will fit; the dimensioned room and final utility locations remain the controlling facts.

Place work zones around real tasks
Arrange refrigerator storage, preparation space, cooking, and cleanup so that the route between them is direct and does not force people through an open oven door or a busy work area. Keep the sink and dishwasher relationship practical, reserve a continuous preparation surface where possible, and put frequently used items near the task where they are used. These are layout decisions, not decorative upgrades: they determine whether the finished kitchen feels efficient.
Check door and drawer interactions in the planner and on the room sketch. Open the refrigerator, dishwasher, oven, and corner storage in the positions shown. Verify that handles do not strike a wall, window trim, adjacent appliance, or another open door. Confirm that seating does not block a main passage and that the worktop edge does not intrude into a required doorway clearance.
Map utilities before finalizing cabinet positions
Show the exact location of every outlet, switch, water line, drain, gas point, appliance circuit, and ventilation connection on the plan. If a utility must move, complete that work before taking the final measurement used for ordering. Ask the electrician, plumber, or gas professional to confirm the intended connection points and any local permit or inspection requirements; IKEA’s general service description does not establish your jurisdiction’s code obligations.
Plan the finished surfaces, including paint
Decide which walls will be painted, tiled, or covered by a backsplash before cabinet installation. Repair, prime, and paint areas that will become inaccessible behind cabinets or tall panels while the room is open, but leave the final cut-in and touch-up until cabinets and worktops are secure. Protect new fronts and worktops from sanding dust and paint splatter. Coordinate sheen and washability with the room’s moisture and cleaning demands rather than choosing color alone.

Review the product list, quotation, and order
Before paying, compare the planner’s product list with the three-dimensional view and your marked-up room. Look for cabinet frames, fronts, hinges, drawer interiors, shelves, legs or suspension hardware, toe-kicks, cover panels, fillers, handles, worktop pieces, supports, sink and tap components, lighting, and appliance installation parts. An exposed side or unfinished gap is often a missing finishing item rather than a design feature.
IKEA says the planning appointment can provide a quotation plus delivery and installation estimates. Treat those estimates as project inputs, not a guarantee that every item will arrive together. Ask how backordered pieces, split deliveries, damaged parts, and missing hardware will be handled, and who checks the shipment before installation starts. Keep the final plan, product list, quotation, appliance manuals, and room measurements in one project file.
Choose between DIY, IKEA installation, and a mixed approach
| Decision factor | DIY installation | IKEA or professional installation | Mixed approach |
|---|---|---|---|
| Included work | You assemble, level, secure, trim, and fit the components you accept responsibility for. | The written service scope defines cabinet, worktop, appliance, sink, tap, lighting, sealing, and cleanup tasks. | You assign cabinet and finish work separately from electrical, plumbing, gas, demolition, or painting. |
| Skills and equipment | Requires careful assembly, accurate leveling, safe wall fastening, worktop fitting, and the right tools. | Installers bring their process and equipment, but you still need to confirm who prepares walls, moves appliances, and handles corrections. | Useful when you can manage cabinets but need licensed trades or specialist worktop fabrication. |
| Utilities | Electrical, plumbing, and gas work must follow local rules and may require qualified professionals. | IKEA’s appliance-installation description excludes electrical, plumbing, and gas connections. | Book the separate trades early and coordinate their arrival with cabinet and appliance installation. |
| Cost and availability | No IKEA installation charge, but allow for tools, delivery handling, waste, time, and possible rework. | Local availability and quoted cost vary; obtain the actual written quote for your project. | Compare the total of each trade and the value of keeping one party responsible for a defined portion of the work. |
| Schedule and corrections | You control the sequence but carry responsibility for fit and remedial work. | Confirm the installer’s schedule, what happens when a part is missing, and who returns to correct an installation issue. | Write handoff points so one trade does not blame another for an inaccessible connection or unfinished surface. |
There is no universal price or best route. Your decision should follow the actual scope, your ability to assemble and secure cabinets accurately, local service availability, and who will be accountable when measurements or parts need correction.
Know what IKEA installation includes and excludes
IKEA’s U.S. installation information describes a package that can include cabinet assembly and securing, hardware and trim fitting, certain IKEA worktop fitting and cutouts, IKEA appliance installation, sinks and taps, cabinet lighting, sealing, and cleanup options. The exact combination must be confirmed in your quote.

| Worktops | Fitting and certain cutouts for IKEA worktops. | Material limits, seams, edge finishing, sink or cooktop cutout responsibility, and custom-countertop measurement or fabrication. |
| Appliances | Installation of certain IKEA appliances. | Whether your exact model is covered and who performs final electrical, plumbing, or gas connections; IKEA explicitly excludes those connections from its appliance-installation description. |

1. Confirm the room and shipment
Before opening boxes, confirm that walls and ceilings are finished, utilities are in their final locations, and the room matches the measurements used for the order. Check delivered cartons against the product list and isolate damaged or missing pieces. Do not discard packaging or paperwork until the installation is accepted.
2. Prepare the work area
Protect floors and adjacent rooms, provide adequate lighting, and keep a clear route for moving cabinets and worktops. Complete demolition, wall repair, painting behind future cabinets, and any required trade rough-ins. A plumber, electrician, or gas professional should verify the rough-in before cabinets hide it.

- Bates paint brushes come in a convenient 6 pieces with 3 flat and 3 angled bristle styles, including (1”, 1.5”, 2”) flat and (1.5”, 2”, 2.5”) angled bristles, perfect for tackling any surface painting or staining job.
- The sturdy natural bristles of each brush are designed to hold more paint, creating a smoother finish with fewer streaks and saving you time on the job.

- These versatile brushes are ready-to-use, easy to clean, and can be reused multiple times, making them economical as well as reliable tools for any painting project.
- Bates paint brushes can be used for both oil-based paints as well as latex stains and are ideal for home or commercial projects such as decks, fences or DIY painting jobs.
3. Assemble and position cabinets
Follow the system-specific IKEA assembly and installation guide for each frame, front, hinge, drawer, leg, suspension component, and fastening point. Work methodically so hardware is not mixed between products. Position base and tall cabinets from established reference lines, check level and plumb repeatedly, and secure them as the guide requires for your wall construction. Never rely on adjacent cabinets or a worktop alone to prevent tipping.
4. Fit panels, fillers, toe-kicks, and hardware
Install cover panels and fillers only after cabinet positions are fixed and doors and drawers have been aligned. Recheck opening clearances at corners and beside appliances. Fit handles and adjust hinges or drawer fronts according to the instructions, then open every door and drawer through its full travel.
5. Fit the worktop and make approved cutouts
Confirm the worktop overhang, seams, wall irregularities, and appliance clearances before cutting. Use the worktop instructions and the requirements for the selected sink or cooktop; a cutout that is misplaced or too large can require a replacement. Seal the specified joints and edges, and protect the worktop while other trades finish.
6. Install appliances, sink, tap, and lighting within the agreed scope
Place appliances only after cabinet openings and ventilation clearances have been checked. Complete sink, tap, and lighting tasks that are in the written installation scope. Arrange separate electrical, plumbing, and gas connections with the appropriate professionals; do not assume that placing an appliance means it is legally or safely connected.
7. Seal, test, and clean
Apply the specified sealant where the installation scope calls for it. Test doors, drawers, appliance clearances, water supply and drainage, lighting, and ventilation with the relevant trades present. Inspect for rocking cabinets, exposed raw edges, unsealed worktop joints, damaged fronts, and gaps that should have a filler or panel. Photograph the completed work and retain manuals, invoices, and any correction list.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCoordinate painting and other trades around the cabinets
Painting is easiest when divided into stages. Finish wall repairs and the concealed coat before cabinet delivery. After cabinets and worktops are secured, protect them and complete the final wall coat, cut-in, trim, and backsplash-adjacent touch-ups. Keep ventilation running as directed by the paint manufacturer and allow coatings to cure before exposing them to steam, cleaning, or heavy use.
Demolition, electrical, plumbing, gas, ventilation, backsplash work, custom worktops, and painting may be supplied by separate contractors. IKEA’s installation information describes referrals or separate quotes for several of these categories, but it does not establish a single nationwide package. Schedule each trade against a written handoff: rough-ins before cabinets, cabinet and worktop fitting before final connections, and finish painting after dusty work is complete.

Questions to settle before you commit
Who is responsible if the measured room changes?
The person or service that produced the plan should be identified in your paperwork, but you should still compare the final room with the ordered dimensions before installation. A changed wall, moved utility, or unfinished surface can make an otherwise correct cabinet list unusable.
Can the IKEA measurement fee be treated as a discount?
IKEA’s U.S. measurement-service page accessed in 2026 says the $79 fee is applied toward qualifying IKEA kitchen installation cost. Confirm that the service and installation you select meet the current qualifying terms in your area.
Does an IKEA appliance installation include hookups?
Not automatically. IKEA’s description explicitly excludes electrical, plumbing, and gas connections from its appliance-installation service. Have the written quote identify the installer for each connection and any required inspection.
What if I need a custom countertop?
The measurement-service description excludes measurement for a custom countertop. Ask the countertop provider or IKEA specialist when the template will be taken, what cabinet support and sink information is required, and how that schedule affects installation.
Where do local permits and code decisions fit?
The IKEA guidance cited here does not establish local permitting, structural, electrical, plumbing, or gas rules. Check with your local building authority and qualified professionals before moving utilities, altering walls, or connecting appliances.
When the kitchen is ready to use
A dependable IKEA kitchen is the result of a dependable chain of information: a functional brief, a finished and accurately measured room, a system-specific plan, a checked product list, and a written installation scope. Keep those records together, assign utility and finish work to the right professionals, and inspect each handoff before the next layer hides it.
